Nat Segaloff is a writer, producer, teacher, and journalist. His writings have appeared in Film Comment, the Journal of the Producers Guild of America, and American Movie Classics Magazine. He is the author of Hurricane Billy: The Stormy Life and Films of William Friedkin and coauthor of Love Stories: Hollywood's Most Romantic Movies. He lives in Los Angeles, California.

Extraordinary account of extraordinary director

Arthur Penn was a genius, an artist at directing films, plays, stage events and TV programs. Segaloff's book is a gem, an always intriguing and very perceptive look at the wizard behind his own curtain. Penn added so much to the culture in the last half of the 20th century. The man whose "Bonnie & Clyde" changed American views of movie-making is worth a whole book. And this is indeed the whole book to read. Thanks, Mr. Segaloff!

Penn on innovation and collaboration

Segaloff has written a sparkling biography of Arthur Penn (1922-2010). Penn revolutionized Hollywood in classic movies such as The Miracle Worker, Bonnie and Clyde, Alice's Restaurant, and Little Big Man as well as a score of Broadway hits.
In the Preface, Segaloff generously notes that "[W]here people disagree on events, well, let's think of Truth as a destination, not an itinerary" (p. xvi). In a life of 88 years, Penn and the participants in his voyage can be forgiven for a few disagreements. Segaloff, however, developed a close relationship with Penn and his family during the writing of the book. Consequently, the book provides rich details unavailable from other sources. The writing remains clean and unsentimental, and treats the major experiences of Penn's life in fascinating essays.
Penn was a generous colleague to actors and made choices for the sake of producing exquisite art. In many cases Penn took a cut in salary to do a piece his way. The themes of this book will resonate with readers beyond film buffs. Business leaders interested in understanding the nature of creative collaboration--which is an interest of mine--will find it fascinating. Penn's directorial approach was innovative, using intuition to bring out hidden meaning from the scripts and nuance from the actors.
To generate creativity, Penn knew that things could not be overly scripted. If things could not be overly scripted they could not be overly controlled. If they could not be overly controlled they could not be overly managed in a hierarchical fashion. But none of that was deduced, it was discovered through trial and error and happy accident.
Arthur Penn: American Director has rich lessons for the economy of innovation in the 21st century. Segaloff's view is sharp, clear, flowing, and well researched. It's been a joy to read.

Arthur Penn -- an American original

Arthur Penn had the sort of career that would be impossible today, moving back and forth between theater, television and movies, with landmark productions in each field. He directed "The Miracle Worker" in all three mediums, and his career spanned from early live television to made for cable originals. Along the way he also changed American filmmaking with "Bonnie and Clyde" and made one of the great revisionist westerns in "Little Big Man." He even made the avant garde comedy "Penn and Teller Get Killed." Journalist and critic Nat Segaloff had complete access to Penn (the book was completed before the director's death in 2010)and serves up an insightful biography of a man who made his mark on 20th century popular culture. I learned a lot about not only Penn and his various productions, but what it was like to work in live television, or mount a Broadway show in the 1960s, or recognize the transformation of American acting by "Method" actors. Readable and engaging, this is a solid look at an American original.
