Aquinas and Analogy, by Ralph M. McInerny

In his De nominum analogia, Cajetan introduced a spurious distinction between analogy of attribution and analogy of proportionality that is not found in Aquinas's writings or anywhere else. Cajetan's mistake became a commonplace and it is still uncritically accepted today. In Aquinas and Analogy, Ralph McInerny carefully traces the source of the confusion to Cajetan's misunderstanding of a text from Aquinas's commentary on the Sentences and shows how unwarranted and how misleading that distinction is.
Another source of confusion has been the attempt to equate the Greek word analogia and its Latin equivalent to try to find word for word correspondences between Aristotle and Aquinas. For instance, what Thomas calls analogy of names is consonant rather with what Aristotle describes as legetai pollachôs, what "is said in many ways." McInerny brings in all relevant texts and analyzes the points they make, and he makes comparisons with the famous notion of focal meaning used by the Oxford philosopher G.E.L. Owen.

McInerny shows how the word 'analogy' is itself analogous and gives an enlightening exposé of the analogy of names. He criticizes Enrico Berti's and Ramirez's influential treatments of analogy, as well as those of a few others for unaccountably falling under the spell of Cajetan's errors. He takes the reader further still into the question of the 'analogy of being' and also of the 'argument by analogy.' But his conclusions steer the reader back to the momentous issues now made accessible by a clear understanding of analogy.

The basic distinctions McInerny introduces, his criticism of the central piece in the literature, Cajetan's De nominum analogia, the applications he makes to problems such as that of the nature of metaphysics or of logic, his knowledge of contemporary debates on related topics, combine to make his contribution unique. Basic philosophical issues are renewed by this book and so is one's reading of Aquinas, Aristotle, and their many interpreters past and present.

Review
Aquinas and Analogy provides readers a valuable service by offering a cogent, synthetic overview of the meaning and scope of analogy in the works of Thomas. . . . A discerning book on a difficult philosophical topic is a gift, and having it written in readable style is an unexpected gift. Aquinas and Analogy is such a work, valuable to both Thomistic scholars and those interested in gaining an understanding of Aquinas's treatment of the subject. -- Crisis

The concept of analogy plays perhaps the central role in nearly all projects undertaken by Thomas Aquinas. . . . McInerny's thoughtful analysis shows where the argument about analogy, and, consequently, much else in Thomas now stands. -- First Things

Out on a Limb
By Theaetetus
I think that few thomistic scholars will go so far out on a limb as McInerny has in making analogy a purely logical doctrine. Perhaps that is why De Konninck chose to refer to the work as "unique." The question then seems to be: If analogy is a purely logical doctrine, why would Aquinas spend so much time considering predicates that are analogous to both God and creatures? And what foundation would there be to this purely logical doctrine in things themselves? The previous reviewer seems to have overlooked these questions. We might have expected some kind of answer to them from the author, rather than a mere dismissal of Thomas de Vio and a reconstruction de novo of Aquinas' entire metaphysical doctrine...

This work is confused. McInerny tries to separate the logic of analogy from its real foundation in being. His criticisms of Cajetan just don't seem to hit the mark. The confusion can be summed up in his statement that "analogy" is itself used analogously. Well, if there is not some sense in which "analogy" is used univocally, then "analogy" loses any definite meaning. It becomes simply the night in which all cows are black. If you want to read something better by McInerny, read his translation and commentary on Aquinas' Disputed Question on Virtue. Ethics appears to be his forte.

Proust, Mann, Joyce in the Modernist Context, Second Edition, by Gerald Gillespie

Marcel Proust, Thomas Mann, and James Joyce grew into adulthood during the advent of modernism. They still command our interest as witnesses of an age that brought both the excitement of constant innovation in the arts and technology and, with the eruption of World War I, the challenge of the greatest prolonged crisis for Western civilization since the French Revolution. The original version of Proust, Mann, Joyce in the Modernist Context strove to show how a kindred encyclopedic drive and sacramental sense informed their responses to the epochal trauma, yielding three distinct and monumental visions of the human estate by the 1920s.

In this second edition, several chapters have been augmented and a new chapter added to encompass important features of modernist prose fiction reaching into and beyond World War II. These enhancements allow greater attention to the late works of Mann and Joyce, contributions of the New World authors, and the special relationship of film to literature. Some 300 writers, artists, and thinkers are referenced to illuminate the creative variety of the larger contexts in which such novelists as Gide, Kafka, Woolf, and Beckett have a prominent place.

Proust. Mann, Joyce In the Modernist Context
By Elaine Mingus
This book not only puts Proust, Mann and Joyce in the picture so to speak, and how they "fit" into modern and postmodern literature, but it includes a synopsis of literature (under various subjects) from the Renaissance up to the time the book was published.
It is concise, well written and interesting.
Gillespie also includes good information about contemporaies of these three authors, also some sources of their writing, and how they had an influence on others.
I did think that Gillespie favors Thomas Mann, that he has more about Mann than the other two authors.
However, he tells how the three of them relate to each other and how each of them used various ideas, styles of writing, etc.

I would recommend this book to anyone who seriously studies literature and also people interested in the history of Europe.

The Unchanging God of Love: Thomas Aquinas and Contemporary Theology on Divine Immutability, Second Edition, by Michael J. Dodds

Much contemporary debate surrounds the traditional teaching that God is unchanging. It is frequently argued that an immutable God must be cold, remote, indifferent, and uncaring―that an unchanging God cannot be the triune God of love revealed in Scripture. Those who reject divine immutability often single out Thomas Aquinas as its most prominent proponent. Unfortunately, such critics of his theology frequently misunderstand the fundamentals of Aquinas's actual teaching.

The Unchanging God of Love provides a clear and comprehensive account of what Aquinas really says about divine immutability, presented in a way that allows his theology to address contemporary criticisms. The book first reviews the various ways Aquinas applies the notion of immutability to creatures, showing that he is well aware of both the positive and negative implications of the concept. It then analyzes all of his arguments for divine immutability that are presented in his writings, noting his care in determining which aspects of immutability are to be affirmed and which are to be denied of God. It also demonstrates the distinctiveness of Aquinas's teaching by examining the biblical, patristic, and philosophical sources he employs.

Aquinas's unchanging God proves to be no static deity, but the dynamic, trinitarian plenitude of knowledge, love, and life, to whom not only immutability but also motion may in some way be attributed. A study of "the motion of the motionless God" reveals how the concepts of both motion and immutability function in Aquinas's understanding of the Trinity, the Incarnation, Creation, and Providence. Through this study, it becomes clear that the unchanging God of Aquinas, far from being indifferent or remote, is truly the God of compassion and love revealed in Scripture, who shares a most intimate friendship with the people he has created and redeemed.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"In The Unchanging God of Love, Dodds fearlessly asserts that an unchanging God can indeed be a God of love, and that any contradiction of this is rooted in misrepresentation of Aquinas' authentic theology. Writing in a prose inviting and readable even for non-theologian types, Dodds offers an honest account of how this theology applies to both God and earthly creatures." ― Maura Beth Pagano, Seattle University Magazine

Talking Appalachian: Voice, Identity, and CommunityFrom University Press of Kentucky

Tradition, community, and pride are fundamental aspects of the history of Appalachia, and the language of the region is a living testament to its rich heritage. Despite the persistence of unflattering stereotypes and cultural discrimination associated with their style of speech, Appalachians have organized to preserve regional dialects―complex forms of English peppered with words, phrases, and pronunciations unique to the area and its people. Talking Appalachian examines these distinctive speech varieties and emphasizes their role in expressing local history and promoting a shared identity.

Beginning with a historical and geographical overview of the region that analyzes the origins of its dialects, this volume features detailed research and local case studies investigating their use. The contributors explore a variety of subjects, including the success of African American Appalachian English and southern Appalachian English speakers in professional and corporate positions. In addition, editors Amy D. Clark and Nancy M. Hayward provide excerpts from essays, poetry, short fiction, and novels to illustrate usage. With contributions from well-known authors such as George Ella Lyon and Silas House, this balanced collection is the most comprehensive, accessible study of Appalachian language available today.

Review
"Winner of the Appalachian Writers' Association Book of the Year for Poetry"

"This book fills a need in college and secondary classrooms in a unique and exciting way―examining a stigmatized, regional variety that also serves as a strong indicator of in-group membership and identity for many (but not all) of its speakers through the use of both research studies and essays/literary excerpts. This is an ambitious project that will serve students, researchers, and instructors for many years to come."―Jim Michnowicz, North Carolina State University

"Clark and Hayward are to be praised for assembling a well-ordered broad spectrum of conversant essays and literary pieces that stand to bring the study, understanding, and appreciation of Appalachian English(es) into a new era of cultivation."―Chris Green, Director, Loyal Jones Appalachian Center, Berea College

"Talking Appalachian is a wonderful collection, challenging readers to learn about the many histories that have shaped Appalachian dialectical diversity and to gain tools to counter the linguistic chauvinism that has used Appalachian dialect as a stand-in for other powerful forms of social and economic marginalization, akin to the ways speakers of Gullah and other regional dialects have been marginalized in the U.S.. The excellent use of leading linguistic scholarship, essays, fiction and poetry in this volume makes it a powerful contribution."―Ann Kingsolver, director of the Appalachian Center at the University of Kentucky

"A sense of pride, a strong grip on old traditions, and a unique style of commonality are part of both the marvel and mystery of Appalachia. Talking Appalachia: Voice, Identity, and Community (University Press of Kentucky), edited by Amy D. Clark and Nancy M. Hayward, complies scholarly writing about this area from contributors in a variety of professional disciplines as well as Appalachian writers, including Silas House, Jane Hicks, George Ella Lyon, Ron Rash, and Lee Smith."―Ina Hughs, Knoxville News Sentinel

"This unique book creates an understanding and acceptance of the Appalachian vernacular as an expression of history, identity, and space. Includes bibliographies, index, and short biographies of the contributors."―Claudene Sproles, Kentucky Libraries

"Beginning with a historical and geographical overview of the region that analyzes the origins of its dialects, this volume features detailed research and local case studies investigating their use. . . . With contributions from well-known authors such as George Ella Lyon and Silas House, this balanced collection is the most comprehensive accessible study of Appalachian language available today."―Paintsville Herald

"An intimate view of regional American language and literature."―Choice

"One part qualitative research, another part fiction, Talking Appalachian: Voice, Identity, and Community is an important contribution to ongoing conversations about the Appalachian region.

[. . . ] [T]hey add fresh insight to and reiterate or refute some of the old arguments about teaching vernacular-speaking students."―West Virginia History

"[] [The book] rounds out a reader's understanding of an important and identifiable characteristic of Appalachian life."―Courier-Journal

Thought it would tell me more about folks who left the Appalachians and traveled further west and how their "talking" changed over time. But learned some things about where expressions my Grandmother in Texas used actually came from.

The Philosophy of Joss Whedon (Philosophy Of Popular Culture)From University Press of Kentucky

Every generation produces a counterculture icon. Joss Whedon, creator of the long-running television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is famed for his subversive wit, rich characters, and extraordinary plotlines. His renown has only grown with subsequent creations, including Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse, and the innovative online series Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Through premises as unusual as a supernatural detective agency run by a vampire and a Western set in outer space, Whedon weaves stories about characters forced to make commonplace moral decisions under the most bizarre of circumstances.

The Philosophy of Joss Whedon examines Whedon's plots and characterizations to reveal their philosophical takes on the limits of personal freedom, sexual morality, radical evil, and Daoism.

Review
"Joss Whedon's work isn't merely a useful vehicle for teaching philosophy; it is philosophy. The authors in this collection exploit this fact by both using Whedon's work to explicate major philosophical themes, while also delving into the Whedonverse to find new answers to perennial questions."―Jacob M. Held, editor of Dr. Seuss and Philosophy: Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!"―Jacob Held

"A significant contribution to the popular culture and philosophy genre in focusing, not on a single show or movie, but on the mastermind behind a number of creative works."―Sharon Kaye, editor of Lost and Philosophy: Think Together, Die Alone"

"Focused on the philosophical musings evoked by Whedon and company's rich televisual, filmic, web, and comic book texts, the collection proves simultaneously accessible and substantive, while also confirming and extending a substantial body of work by the community of Whedon scholars. Most commendably, the authors' manage to teach readers-students, professors, and fans-just as much about Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Sartre, and Nietzsche as about Malcolm Reynolds, the spaceship Serenity, Cordelia Chase, Billy/Dr. Horrible, and Caroline Farrell/Echo.―Tanya R. Cochran, coeditor of Investigating Firefly and Serenity: Science Fiction on the Frontier"

"The Philosophy of Joss Whedon is a necessity for any Whedonite's nerdy library."―Examiner.com"

"Whedon has also been a hot topic in the movie world lately, having written The Cabin in the Woods . . . as well as Marvel Comics' much-anticipated The Avengers, which he also directed."―On Milwaukee"―

Didymus the Blind: Commentary on Zechariah (Fathers of the Church (Hardcover)), by Didymus

The book of Zechariah is the longest and most obscure of the Twelve Minor Prophets, Jerome remarked. That may have been the reason why in 386 he visited the Alexandrian scholar Didymus the Blind and requested a work on this prophet. Though long thought to be lost, the work was rediscovered in 1941 at Tura outside Cairo along with some other biblical commentaries. As a result we have in our possession a commentary on Zechariah by Didymus that enjoys particular distinction as his only complete work on a biblical book extant in Greek whose authenticity is established, which comes to us by direct manuscript tradition, and has been critically edited. Thus it deserves this first appearance in English. A disciple of Origen, whose work on Zechariah reached only to chapter five and is no longer extant, Didymus's commentary on this apocalyptic book illustrates the typically allegorical approach to the biblical text that we associate with Alexandria. Even Cyril of Alexandria in the next generation will lean rather to the historical style of commentary found in the Antiochene scholars Theodore and Theodoret, whose works on the Twelve are also extant and who had Didymus open before them. obscure verses of Zechariah, capitalizing on his extraordinary familiarity with Holy Writ (despite his disability), and proceeding on a process of interpretation-by-association, frequently invoking also etymology and number symbolism to plumb the meaning of the text. No wonder he remarks, The reader who understands it is a seer; such is the richness of the hermeneutical offering.

Early Christian scholarly understanding
By A. Fuller
Alexandria was the intellectual center of early Christianity, and Didymus represented the apex of Alexandrian Bible interpretation. Didymus gives a detailed interpretation of the prophet Zechariah. It is a very different interpretation than that given by historical-literal or historical-critical scholars today. Zechariah uses many of the same symbols that are found in the book of Revelation. Didymus' interpretation helps understand how early Christian scholars would have understood that mystifying book.

The Enemy in Our Hands: America's Treatment of Prisoners of War from the Revolution to the War on Terror, by Robert C. Doyle

Revelations of abuse at Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison and the U.S. detention camp at Guantánamo Bay had repercussions extending beyond the worldwide media scandal that ensued. The controversy surrounding photos and descriptions of inhumane treatment of enemy prisoners of war, or EPWs, from the war on terror marked a watershed moment
in the study of modern warfare and the treatment of prisoners of war. Amid allegations of human rights violations and war crimes, one question stands out among the rest: Was the treatment of America's most recent prisoners of war an isolated event or part of a troubling and complex issue that is deeply rooted in our nation's military history?
Military expert Robert C. Doyle's The Enemy in Our Hands: America's Treatment of Prisoners of War from the Revolution to the War on Terror draws from diverse sources to answer this question. Historical as well as timely in its content, this work examines America's major wars and past conflicts―among them, the American Revolution, the Civil War, World Wars I and II, and Vietnam―to provide understanding of the United
States' treatment of military and civilian prisoners. The Enemy in Our Hands offers a new perspective of U.S. military history on the subject of EPWs and suggests that the tactics employed to manage prisoners of war are unique and disparate from one conflict to
the next. In addition to other vital information, Doyle provides a cultural analysis and exploration of U.S. adherence to international standards of conduct, including the 1929 Geneva Convention in each war. Although wars are not won or lost on the basis of how EPWs are treated, the treatment of prisoners is one of the measures by which history's conquerors are judged.

Casting a wide net, this book delivers a scholarly, lucid overview of America's handling of POWs of all stripes: military, civilian, and irregular. Historian Doyle (A Prisoner's Duty) emphasizes that uniformed foreign soldiers received humane treatment from the Revolution through the Iraq invasion, peaking during WWII when hundreds of thousands of German troops brought to the U.S. received relatively benign treatment. Prisoners fared worse when Americans fought Americans. Loyalists during the Revolution were abused and often killed. Both sides during the Civil War neglected prisoners disgracefully. Historically, irregular fighters enjoyed no protection, but while soldiers rarely objected to mistreating opponents who didn't play fair, civilians were often outraged. In Korea, the screening of prisoners to separate combatants from noncombatants, and their future repatriation, led to prisoner uprisings. No ideologue, Doyle explains that sometimes abuse is unavoidable; at other times it's ineffective, infuriates world opinion, and puts American soldiers at risk for reprisals. Doyle delves deeply, and military buffs will consider it the definitive treatment. 63 photos. (May)

"The lesson . . . is clear: an improvised POW policy for a conflict with an irregular foe leads into a legal and ethical quandry."―Joint Forces Quarterly

From the Inside Flap

Winston Churchill once remarked, "A prisoner of war is a man who tries to kill you and fails, and then asks you not to kill him."

Discovery and exposure of the U.S. military's inhumane treatment of detainees at Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison and the Guantánamo Bay detention camp generated a media frenzy that many argue irrevocably damaged America's reputation as a world leader. Worldwide scrutiny of the photos and descriptions of the abuse of enemy prisoners of war, or EPWs, from the war on terror incited allegations of human rights violations and possible war crimes and left many wondering whether the mistreatment of these prisoners was an isolated set of circumstances or, conversely, one example among many of atrocities rooted in our nation's history.

Drawing from diverse primary sources, military historian Robert C. Doyle illuminates America's prisoner of war policies from the founding era to the present. A work of history with direct relevance to contemporary events, The Enemy in Our Hands: America's Treatment of Prisoners of War from the Revolution to the War on Terror examines every major war and conflict, from the American Revolution through the Civil War, both world wars, Vietnam, and Afghanistan, to provide a comprehensive understanding of American treatment of EPWs.

Doyle offers a nuanced interpretation of American military history, suggesting that the treatment of EPWs in each conflict was a unique reflection of the prevailing political attitudes of the day. The military's incarceration practices with prisoners, particularly its methods used for interrogation, have evolved dramatically since the prisoner exchanges of the American Revolution. Using graphic details of the experiences of captured enemy combatants and civilians, The Enemy in Our Hands explores each war's adherence to international standards of conduct, including the 1929 Geneva Convention.

The Enemy in Our Hands is a complete cultural analysis of a complicated issue the nation has struggled with since its inception. As the context of modern warfare continues to be shaped by current events, it is incumbent upon America to consider its treatment of EPWs and how that treatment defines national character.

Robert C. Doyle, professor of history at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, is the author of A Prisoner's Duty: Great Escapes in U.S. Military History and Voices from Captivity: Interpreting the American POW Narrative. He has been a historical consultant on multiple films and documentaries, including Hart's War (2002).

Korea chapter misses the mark
By Bill Haywood
This is a review of Chapter 12 on communist prisoners held in Korea, because it is what I have detailed knowledge of. The author thoroughly misunderstands the issue and is unaware of basic research.

Doyle presents the U.S. military interpretation of events on Koje-do, the prison island that held at its peak 170,000 communist prisoners. Many POWs turned against communism and said they would refuse to go home after the war. The U.S. announced it would not forcibly repatriate them, creating a public relations debacle for China and North Korea. To avoid the embarrassment of foot soldiers defecting en masse, they demanded full repatriation and continued the war for 18 months unsuccessfully trying to get it. That's the official story, but it's been known to be thoroughly incomplete since at least 1983 when mainstream historians began debunking it.

Barton Bernstein (1983, in Cumings, _Child of Conflict_) and Rosemary Foot (1990, _A Substitute for Victory_) demonstrated that many of the communist prisoners were actually forced to renounce repatriation. They proved this with testimony from American officials including ambassador to South Korean John Muccio, armistice negotiator C. Turner Joy, and the State Department's Charles Stelle. A psychological warfare operation had sent South Korean and Chinese nationalist agents into Koje-do to organize a defection campaign. Aided by the guards, they took control of one barracks after another, then terrorized prisoners into refusing repatriation. A minority of prisoners were anticommunist and assisted them. After the armistice the nonrepatriate prisoners were put under the jurisdiction of troops from India for 120 days where they were supposed to be able to change their minds and go home without danger. But the barracks leaders used squads of brutal, deadly enforcers who prevented POWs from approaching the gates. This is documented by two Indian authors in _History of the Custodian Force (India) in Korea_ (Prasad 1976) and _India's Role in the Korean Question_ (Dayal 1959).

Doyle does not downplay the psyops defection program, he leaves it out altogether. As a result, he accepts the claim of American officers that the rioting and killings on Koje-do were due to the communists' fanatical insistence that POWs continue combat operations after capture. There was some of that. But the scope and intensity of fighting came from prisoners trying to keep control of their barracks from the KMT and ROK agents bent on forced non-repatriation.

POW History Fascinating
By George Gerhart
As a former U.S. Army officer and Viet Nam war combat veteran, I saw some prisoners and heard tales of what might happen to them. I also enjoy learning about history and, in particular, military history. This book fulfilled all of my expectations and then some about the subject. Mr. Doyle provided fascinating insights about the various levels of accepted treatment of prisoners throughout our country's history.
