A Thomas More Source BookFrom Brand: Catholic Univ of Amer Pr

This Source Book brings together classic texts by and about Thomas More―poet, scholar, statesman, family man, educational reformer, philosopher, historian, and saint. Thomas More is the first major figure of the English Renaissance, acclaimed in his own age but surprisingly unstudied in our own.

In addition to serving as an introduction to More's life and writings, this collection is a helpful companion to the study of More's literary and philosophical masterwork, Utopia, and to the study of sixteenth-century history, literature, philosophy, or politics. The writings focus upon More's articulations of education, political theory, church-state relations, love and friendship, practical politics, and the vexing issues of conscience. They shed light on the distinctive Christian humanism that More expressed and embodied. Also included in this book are three famous sixteenth-century accounts of More's life by Erasmus, Roper, and a team of London playwrights including William Shakespeare.

Gerard B. Wegemer is Professor of English at the University of Dallas. An expert on Thomas More, he is the author of numerous works including Thomas More on Statesmanship (1996) and Thomas More: A Portrait of Courage (1995). Stephen W. Smith is Assistant Professor of English at Hillsdale College and is coeditor of Shakespeare's Last Plays: Readings in Literature and Politics (2001).

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"The editors have captured powerfully and beautifully the essence of the 'man for all seasons.'"―The Catholic Answer

"This collection (and the website accompaniment) is certainly a good place for those unfamiliar with More to begin their studies. . . ."―Andrew A. Chibi, Sixteenth Century Journal

"The editors of this text have done an estimable service for Tudor historians and those who teach English Renaissance or English Reformation literature. . . . [A] balanced understanding of a complex, divided personality and a better appreciation of the wide range of More's interests. The editors provide an excellent brief biography of More. . . . Highly recommended. All academic levels/collections."―D.R. Bisson, Choice

"Gerard B. Wegemer and Stephen W. Smith have edited together into a manageable and highly readable volume, a collection of documents that form an impressive mosaic of the life―political, intellectual, personal, spiritual, and historical―of Sir Thomas More. The book . . . gives a far clearer picture of More than has been heretofore drawn. . . . [I]nstead of a play-by-play account of his life with muddled color commentary, A Thomas More Source Book gives us the coach's secret playbook. . . . The editors pay an artful compliment to Thomas More, who wrote so very often in conscience, by putting together a book designed to elucidate More's own. The book's tone is scholarly, but clear and simple, designed for scholars and statesmen alike. An opening introduction reads as a historical primer, but the source documents are treasures of the Western world. The footnotes throughout are lucid and complete. The volume is replete with pithy marginal summaries and an exhaustive index, which makes it handy for reference."―Matthew T. Mehan, National Review.com

"This anthology is a very valuable collection of works by Sir and Saint Thomas More and of early works about him―certainly unique in the range and depth of its coverage. For those who wish to draw really near to the mind and personality of More, there is no better introduction than this book."―Clarence Miller, Executive Editor of Complete Works of St. Thomas More

"A Thomas More Source Book embodies the Renaissance call ad fontes: to the fountainheads. No likeness of More can be truer than his own works, especially his letters. This selection reflects every facet of More's many-sided personalit

A Thomas More Source Book
By Melissa Laurel
Although some scholars purchase this book as part of the class and lecture series on Thomas More, I bought it to console myself since I could not attend a class.

I was impressed by Thomas More's clarity of thought and ability to decide "the right thing to do" at each turn in his life. Clearly, many of his contemporaries admired him for this characteristic of his as well, as their contributions to this book show. I enjoyed the thought-provoking depth which Thomas More shares through his own writing.

Great addition to Renaissance studies!
By Elaine
What a great contribution these authors have made to the world of Renaissance and Thomas More studies! This comprehensive anthology provides a wealth of primary sources as well as related materials on Thomas More and his world. Due to the multi-faceted character of its subject, this book will be of interest to historians, biographers, educators, theologians, writers, politicians, and many others as well. The "Man for All Seasons" was a lawyer, judge, husband and father, scholar, counselor to the king, and martyr, and this rich source book provides the background to the inner man. The authors begin with contemporary biographies and sketches of More, then explore samples of his own works. Selections from his early poems and letters are followed by some of his writings on education (he was a trend-setter in promoting education of women), government, and religion. The closing section, "More's Last Days", includes samples of his letters, various accounts of his trial, and the Paris Newsletter report on his execution.

This book provides a solid foundation for More studies and would serve as an excellent college text. Following an informative Introduction, a treasury of More-related material is provided. Even the Elizabethan play "Munday and Shakespeare's 'Sir Thomas More'" is provided in its entirety. Explanatory introductions are given to all selections, and clear glosses enrich the text throughout the book. Perhaps the only thing one might miss here is More's most famous work, "Utopia", but for study at this level, it certainly deserves to be treated separately, in its entirety.

This handsome and convenient text is further enriched by a lovely collection of portraits and other related artworks, even reproductions of pages from More's prayer book (showing his own hand-written additions). Helpful material at the end of the book includes several chronologies, some original well-annotated maps, and a very thorough Index. These tools should prove most useful to More scholars.

In sum, I feel that this book provides a wonderful tool for those who explore the world of Renaissance England and the person of Thomas More. We can only be grateful that Professors Wegemer and Smith foresaw the need for this book and did such a fine job in producing it.

An excellent sample of More's writings, and of writings about him
By Patrick J. Flood
The Source Book is a selection of passages from Thomas More's writings and from writings by contemporaries who knew him -- like Desiderius Erasmus.

The selections present a fairly well-rounded picture of one of the outstanding political, religious, and cultural figures of Renaissance England, someone who was also one of the finest examples of human character of any age. More made it look almost easy to stand by objective moral principles in the face of heavy pressure, and he did it with a grace and wit that made it very hard to dislike or attack him. But the king he had served did in fact turn on him for not sacrificing his principles to the king's impulses and fixations, and took his life for it. The king's fixations about perpetuating the dynasty came to nothing (it died out with his children), but More's life -- or rather the he way he lived it -- has made him not just "a man for all seasons" but a man for all ages, and perhaps particularly for our age.

The book also gives the reader first-hand accounts of the events of More's interrogation, imprisonment, trial, and execution, including, for instance, the report of the Paris Newsletter on this trial and executioin..

The reader should be on notice not to expect to find excerpts from either "Utopia" or "The History of King Richard III," two of More's best-known works, although there are passing references to them. The editors evidently decided it would be more valuable to introduce readers to some lesser-known writings that better illuminate the man and the subjects that absorbed his interest.

Some passages in the selections are not in modern English, which can make for occasional puzzlement and a slower pace, though the editors have provided helpful footnotes for many of the more obscure terms.

With Amusement for All: A History of American Popular Culture since 1830, by LeRoy Ashby

Popular culture is a central part of everyday life to many Americans. Personalities such as Elvis Presley, Oprah Winfrey, and Michael Jordan are more recognizable to many people than are most elected officials. With Amusement for All is the first comprehensive history of two centuries of mass entertainment in the United States, covering everything from the penny press to Playboy, the NBA to NASCAR, big band to hip hop, and other topics including film, comics, television, sports, dance, and music. Paying careful attention to matters of race, gender, class, technology, economics, and politics, LeRoy Ashby emphasizes the complex ways in which popular culture simultaneously reflects and transforms American culture, revealing that the world of entertainment constantly evolves as it tries to meet the demands of a diverse audience. Trends in popular entertainment often reveal the tensions between competing ideologies, appetites, and values in American society. For example, in the late nineteenth century, Americans embraced "self-made men" such as John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie: the celebrities of the day were circus tycoons P.T. Barnum and James A. Bailey, Wild West star "Buffalo Bill" Cody, professional baseball organizer Albert Spalding, and prizefighter John L. Sullivan. At the same time, however, several female performers challenged traditional notions of weak, frail Victorian women. Adah Isaacs Menken astonished crowds by wearing tights that made her appear nude while performing dangerous stunts on horseback, and the shows of the voluptuous burlesque group British Blondes often centered on provocative images of female sexual power and dominance. Ashby describes how history and politics frequently influence mainstream entertainment. When Native Americans, blacks, and other non-whites appeared in the nineteenth-century circuses and Wild West shows, it was often to perpetuate demeaning racial stereotypes―crowds jeered Sitting Bull at Cody's shows. By the early twentieth century, however, black minstrel acts reveled in racial tensions, reinforcing stereotypes while at the same time satirizing them and mocking racist attitudes before a predominantly white audience. Decades later, Red Foxx and Richard Pryor's profane comedy routines changed American entertainment. The raw ethnic material of Pryor's short-lived television show led to a series of African-American sitcoms in the 1980s that presented common American experiences―from family life to college life―with black casts. Mainstream entertainment has often co-opted and sanitized fringe amusements in an ongoing process of redefining the cultural center and its boundaries. Social control and respectability vied with the bold, erotic, sensational, and surprising, as entrepreneurs sought to manipulate the vagaries of the market, control shifting public appetites, and capitalize on campaigns to protect public morals. Rock 'n Roll was one such fringe culture; in the 1950s, Elvis blurred gender norms with his androgynous style and challenged conventions of public decency with his sexually-charged performances. By the end of the 1960s, Bob Dylan introduced the social consciousness of folk music into the rock scene, and The Beatles embraced hippie counter-culture. Don McLean's 1971 anthem "American Pie" served as an epitaph for rock's political core, which had been replaced by the spectacle of hard rock acts such as Kiss and Alice Cooper. While Rock 'n Roll did not lose its ability to shock, in less than three decades it became part of the established order that it had originally sought to challenge. With Amusement for All provides the context to what Americans have done for fun since 1830, showing the reciprocal nature of the relationships between social, political, economic, and cultural forces and the way in which the entertainment world has reflected, refracted, or reinforced the values those forces represent in America.

Comprehensive
By Anthony Taylor
A central image to Ashby's description of the nature of popular culture is the circus, with its large acts meant for mass consumption and its sideshows that satisfy some darker human curiosities. Through the course of the book, he shows how popular sideshow acts eventually achieve acceptance in the "big tent." The book covers many types of popular culture, from minstrel shows to boxing to hip hop. Many interesting details, written in an academic but entertaining style.

Sprawling History - Great Research
By George H.
Stunning research - one of those tomes where every paragraph has its own private footnote. The sprawling book traces American pop culture from its birth around 1840 (coinciding with telegraph and railroads) through about 2000.

What's the origin of burlesque? Of ragtime? Of professional sports? How have 101 different aspects of popular culture changed and intertwined through the years? Mix in thumbnail biographies of dozens of nearly-forgotten performers and entrepreneurs - Its' all here - and well-documented.

Considering the pop character of the material, the writing is rather dry, with no sense of drama or suspense. No matter - pop culture is fascinating in its own right.

Audible version also available - but I felt like I needed to buy the book as well to orient myself.

Very entertaining, for a big fat slightly scary book....
By J. Harlow
There are, inevitably, some sources of popular culture not included- the drinking den, from gin palace to wine bar, for instance.

But the tensions between what the upper classes think is proper culture ("you have to be THIS smart to go on this ride" still applies to the visual arts - the less there truly is to it, as most ideas expressed in art could be found in a paperback novel, the most snooty the claims made about it. It's all about shifting luxury goods ands flattering the monied that they have "taste")) and what The People really like (Fox, Murdoch help us) are exposed as constant over three centuries.

I am a rock music obsessessive, and learned stuff about Elvis I never knew - what a social-sexual rebel he really was, with his Tony Curtis style eye makeup. I took this fattie on vocation, as opposed to my usual Stephen King, and read every page, and the indexes!!!)

Kentucky's Natural Heritage presents a persuasive argument for conservation of the state's biodiversity. Organized by a team from the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission, the book is an outgrowth of the agency's focus on biodiversity protection.

Richly detailed and lavishly illustrated with more than 250 color photos, maps, and charts, Kentucky's Natural Heritage is the definitive compendium of the commonwealth's amazing diversity. It celebrates the natural beauty of some of the most important ecosystems in the nation and presents a compelling case for the necessity of conservation.

From the Inside Flap

Although any nature lover walking through one of the Kentucky's more than fifty nature reserves can observe the diverse population of flora and fauna, few truly understand the importance of the biological, geographical, and cultural history of Kentucky in the context of biodiversity. Kentucky's Natural Heritage provides an essential illustrated reference to Kentucky's remarkable natural history, while emphasizing the importance of conserving the unique biological environment to which the Commonwealth is home.

From the Mississippi Piedmont rivers to the Appalachian mesophytic forests, the state hosts a vast range of ecosystems that have been internationally recognized for their biodiversity. Kentucky is made up of three natural regions: the Coastal Plains, the Interior Low Plateaus, and the Appalachian Highlands. These three areas are drastically different from each other in climate, geology, topography, and soils; consequently, the flora and fauna found in each are often specific to that area. For example, the Orangefin Darter can be found in the Green River ecosystem -- and nowhere else in the world.

The book also serves as a call to arms for conservation of the state's numerous natural communities. The authors outline the threats that could potentially destroy the biodiversity in the state, and discuss the need for and methods of conservation of the area. They also stress that ecosystems are dynamic and that the fluctuation in population of one species can drastically affect the rest of the ecological web, thus highlighting the delicate balances that exist within such environments. The preservation of these fragile systems continues to be a relatively hot-button issue since former Governor Paul E. Patton commissioned the Kentucky Biodiversity Task Force in an effort to sustain biodiversity in the state.

Kentucky's Natural Heritage was spearheaded by a team from the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission and consists of entries written by over fifteen of the state's most noted naturalists. Complete with maps, charts, and nearly 200 photos, this book will please both the academic reader and anyone interested in the state's natural heritage. It is the first book to describe holistically the connections between the environment, the landscape, the flora, and the fauna of Kentucky in a time when such connections are in danger of being broken forever.

I love KY Biodiversity Guide!
By Nature Girl
Not since Wharton and Barbour have Kentuckians been given as much information about our natural world as with the publication of Kentucky's Natural Heritage: An Illustrated Guide to Biodiversity. While not overly technical, the easy-to-read text and great graphics are simple science. Plus, the hundreds of photographs of flora and fauna are outstanding. This book presents the status of biodiversity within the Commonwealth of Kentucky and relates to the region and the entire world with its relevance.

The foreword by Mr. Wendell Berry is both beautifully insightful and alarming. Mr. Berry gives a testament to the importance of biodiversity and the tragedy of losing it.

I ordered several "KY Biodiversity Guides" - one for myself and others to give as perfect gifts to "naturalists" I love. I highly recommend that everyone share the love of nature and of Kentucky by buying Kentucky's Natural Heritage: An Illustrated Guide to Biodiversity.

Buy this book!!!!
By Love4science
This is a great book. Get it for the photos. Get it for the erudite discussions by Kentucky's overworked and underappreciated ecologists, who are struggling to save the State's last great places. If you love Kentucky, break away from the cliche glossy books( made in China) on the Derby for a change. This book makes a great gift, but it's more than a cocktail table piece. When you purchase this book, it supports the mission and the work of the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission.

Marie de France and the Poetics of Memory, by Whalen

WINNER of the SOUTH CENTRAL MODERN LANGUAGE ASSOCIATION PRIZE for BEST SCHOLARLY OR CRITICAL BOOK FOR 2009

Marie de France and the Poetics of Memory presents the first exhaustive treatment of the rhetorical use of description and memory in all the narrative works of the late 12th-century poet, Marie de France--the first woman to compose literary texts in French. Though she had no access to treatises devoted solely to the arts of memory that were to develop in the centuries following her own, she nonetheless exemplifies some of the same techniques that are extolled by their authors.

Logan E. Whalen's insightful study begins with a discussion of Marie's literary plan in light of classical rhetoric and the art of inventio, or literary topical invention, that developed in the Middle Ages. He then demonstrates how the fifty-six-line prologue that precedes Marie de France's Lais gives an outline of her literary plan, not only for the narrative texts that follow in that particular collection, but also for the whole of her poetic corpus.

Marie's use of description in the Lais shows the way in which she creates an imaginative locus that is conducive to memory through her elaborate descriptions of people, animals, places, events, and an assortment of inanimate objects. Her Fables is examined in light of the way in which scribes and illuminators of the centuries that immediately followed the composition of these texts interpreted them scripturally and iconographically. Finally, Whalen compares the structure of memory and description in the two works the Espurgatoire seint Patriz and the Vie seinte Audree--a text that has traditionally been ascribed to an anonymous author but that has recently been argued to be a fourth text by Marie de France.

Logan E. Whalen is assistant professor of French at the University of Oklahoma.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"Logan Whalen's work brings together all the elements of memory and remembrance in the four works attributed to Marie and he demonstrates just how important use of memory was to her narrative invention and to her success in bringing her texts to the 12th-century audience. The book is well thought out and develops its thesis in a thorough and reasonable manner." -- Emanuel Mickel, Encomia

"This slim book is best appreciated as an act of homage to two writers who happen to be women. Logan E. Whalen's love for his subject, the twelfth-century Anglo-Norman poet known as Marie de France, is manifest on every page." -- Monica Brzezinski Potkay, Christianity and Literature

The book is well thought out and develops its thesis in a thorough and reasonable manner." -- Emanuel Mickel, Encomia

"Whalen's book begins with helpful introductory sections on the rhetorical foundations of medieval memory as well as the art of descriptio.... This study elegantly enriches our understanding of Marie by illuminating her relationships to her literary communities, her successors, and her broader cultural contexts in the visual and plastic arts." -- Seeta Chaganti, H-France Review

"[A] thoughtful and persuasive study." -- Sally L. Burch, French Studies

"The book is among the first comprehensive studies of Marie de France's writing to include La vie Seinte Audree among the works attributed to her since June Hall McCash's influential article was published in Speculum (July 2002). Additionally, Whalen's analysis contributes fresh evidence to the case for Marie's authorship of the Audree."--Paula Leverage, Speculum

The Philosophical Vision of John Duns Scotus: An Introduction, by Mary Beth Ingham, Mechthild Dreyer

In this much-anticipated work, distinguished authors Mary Beth Ingham and Mechthild Dreyer present an accessible introduction to the philosophy of the thirteenth century Franciscan John Duns Scotus. Based on their expert knowledge of Scotus, this text brings together key insights of Scotus's theory of cognition, metaphysics, and ethics in a comprehensive and unified manner. The authors use critical texts and the most recent scholarship on Scotus to introduce the intricate vision of the Subtle Doctor to a wide audience.

This volume offers a point of entry into the world of medieval philosophy and its connection to questions belonging to natural theology: the existence of God, divine freedom, and perfection. It presents important historical information on Scotus himself, but additionally on the philosophical context in which he taught. The authors explicate his thought in light of the dominant questions of the late thirteenth century.

The integrative and comprehensive presentation of the essential elements of Scotus's philosophical vision makes this book an excellent resource. While they clearly wrote the book for the student beginning to study Scotus, they write with such clarity and insight about subtle points in scholastic disputes that even more advanced students and scholars will benefit from reading this book....[John Duns Scotus] has rarely been presented with greater skill and insight than in Ingham and Dreyer's introduction to his philosophy." ― Christopher Cullen, Review of Metaphysics

"As an introduction to Scotus's ethics within the context of his entire philosophical vision, [this book] deserves every success." ― Chris Schabel, Speculum

"Students of scholastic theology and philosophy will benefit from reading this introduction, which provides a clear analysis of the Subtle Doctor's thought." ― Andrew Rosato, Religious Studies Review

This is quite a fine book, well written, and one of a series that Ingham has been writing over the last few years promoting a "beauty" frame for Scotist thought. The interested novice reader should probably head for her wittily titled "Scotus for Dunces" first, or check out the Stanford Philosophy online site. It should be said upfront that Scotus is, well, a slog to get through at the best of times -- a lot of background is needed to get a real sense of what the issues are at stake in the debates over topics like individuation, univocity, and intellect/will in the period. Ingham does her best.

After the Fall: War and Occupation in Irène Némirovsky's Suite française, by Nathan Bracher

Irene Némirovsky's war narrative, Suite française, was discovered and published posthumously in 2004, over sixty years after it was written. A Jewish Russian immigrant who had achieved literary stardom during the twenty years she lived in France, Némirovsky wrote her novel during the first years of the Occupation, before she was deported by the Nazis to Auschwitz, where she died in 1942. When published, the book produced an immediate international sensation and has since been translated into more than twenty-five languages. While giving rise to a certain amount of controversy, the novel has been widely acclaimed as a literary masterpiece providing a devastating portrayal of France's defeat and occupation.

In this work, the first critical monograph on Suite française, Nathan Bracher shows how, first amid the chaos and panic of the May-June 1940 debacle, and then within the unsettling new order of the German occupation, Némirovsky's novel casts a particularly revealing light on the behavior and attitudes of the French as well as on the highly problematic interaction of France's social classes. It offers valuable insights on a number of subjects (in particular, the civilian exodus, the relations of French women with German soldiers, and socio-economic conflicts under the Occupation) that, until now, have been too often neglected or misunderstood, while at the same time displaying a striking originality when compared to other discourses and narratives dating from the same period. Bracher dispels a number of misconceptions that have arisen when Suite française has been assessed on the basis of biographical presumptions or with respect to current imperatives of the "duty to remember."

Instead of viewing Suite française as a source of information about the author or as a simple instrument of memory, we can best understand the novel, Bracher argues, as a specifically configured literary text whose voice can engage its readers in a critical dialogue with the dramatic era of the catastrophic fall of France and the ensuing Occupation. Contrary to certain polemical interpretations, Bracher shows that Némirovsky's searing novel not only makes a mockery of Vichy ideology but even adumbrates an ethic of resistance.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Nathan Bracher is professor of French at Texas A&M University and author of Through the Past Darkly: History and Memory in François Mauriac's Bloc-notes.

FROM THE BOOK:

"It is well known that human beings are complex, multi-faceted, contradictory, and full of surprises, but it takes a time of war or great upheaval in order to see it. That is the most fascinating and the most terrible spectacle, she thought. The most terrible because it it the most real: you cannot take it for granted that you know the sea without having seen it during a storm as well as during calm weather. The person who knows men and women is somebody who has observed them during an era such as this one, she thought. Only such people know themselves." -- From Irène Némirovsky, Suite française

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"It is well known that human beings are complex, multi-faceted, contradictory, and full of surprises, but it takes a time of war or great upheaval in order to see it. That is the most fascinating and the most terrible spectacle, she thought. The most terrible because it it the most real: you cannot take it for granted that you know the sea without having seen it during a storm as well as during calm weather. The person who knows men and women is somebody who has observed them during an era such as this one, she thought. Only such people know themselves." -- From Irène Némirovsky, Suite française

Growing Democracy in Japan: The Parliamentary Cabinet System since 1868 (Asia in the New Millennium), by Brian Woodall

The world's third largest economy and a stable democracy, Japan remains a significant world power; but its economy has become stagnant, and its responses to the earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011 and the nuclear crisis that followed have raised international concerns. Despite being constitutionally modeled on Great Britain's "Westminster"-style parliamentary democracy, Japan has failed to fully institute a cabinet-style government, and its executive branch is not empowered to successfully respond to the myriad challenges confronted by an advanced postindustrial society.

In Growing Democracy in Japan, Brian Woodall compares the Japanese cabinet system to its counterparts in other capitalist parliamentary democracies, particularly in Great Britain. Woodall demonstrates how the nation's long history of dominant bureaucracies has led to weakness at the top levels of government, while mid-level officials exercise much greater power than in the British system. The post–1947 cabinet system, begun under the Allied occupation, was fashioned from imposed and indigenous institutions which coexisted uneasily. Woodall explains how an activist economic bureaucracy, self-governing "policy tribes" (zoku) composed of members of parliament, and the uncertainties of coalition governments have prevented the cabinet from assuming its prescribed role as primary executive body.

Woodall's meticulous examination of the Japanese case offers lessons for reformers as well as for those working to establish democratic institutions in places such as Iraq, Afghanistan, China, and the new regimes born during the Arab Spring. At the very least, he argues, Japan's struggles with this fundamental component of parliamentary governance should serve as a cautionary tale for those who believe that growing democracy is easy.

Review
"Growing Democracy in Japan is a scholarly contribution to the understanding of an important―indeed central―aspect of Japanese government and politics."―J. A .A. Stockwin, author of Governing Japan: Divided Politics in a Resurgent Economy

"Growing Democracy in Japan is the only book in English that explicates the development of the cabinet system, the key institution in Japanese government. Woodall strikes the right level of detail, and his writing is lively."―John Creighton Campbell, emeritus, University of Michgan

"Woodall addresses an important question in the field of Japanese politics: Why hasn't the cabinet wielded more authority in the Japanese version of parliamentary government? To unravel this puzzle, Woodall carefully situates the Japanese case in a cross-national comparative perspective, and then delves into the history in its full complexity. He applies a keen analytical lens, demonstrating how crafty bureaucrats and wily backbenchers have resisted cabinet control."―Steven K. Vogel, University of California, Berkeley"

"Matching in analytical depth what it attains in historical breadth, this book raises a question often posed but never satisfactorily answered until now:"why has Japan failed to evolve into a fully-functioning Westminster-style cabinet system?"―Aurelia George Mulgan, University of New South Wales"―Pacific Affairs

"In this book Woodall makes a valuable contribution to the study of Japanese politics by carefully examining the historical development of the cabinet system, literally the centre of the Japanese government.

[. . .] Utilizing a wealth of both Japanese and English documents, Woodall chronologically traces the evolution of Japan's cabinet system by focusing on major political actors, their interactions, and political structures at different times, or "critical junctures."

[. . .] [T]his book is a welcome addition to the literature on Japanese politics."

"[. . .] [T]he multidisciplinary approach he uses is very effective in understanding the complexity of the question of democracy in Japan.

[. . .] [T]here are crucial lessons to learn from Japan and this can assist other countries in understanding the challenges they will face in turning to a democratic cabinet system of governing."―Journal of Japanese Studies

Christianity and European Culture: Selections from the Work of Christopher Dawson (Worlds of Christopher Dawson), by Gerald J. Russello

Christopher Dawson (1889-1970) has been widely praised as one of the most important Catholic historians of the twentieth century. Commended by T. S. Eliot, Arnold Toynbee, and many others for his sophisticated approach to history, Dawson integrated a providential vision with traditional historical analysis. Many of his works focused on the important relationship between religion and culture. This volume is the first edited collection of Dawson's works to appear in several decades. It includes the full text of The Historic Reality of Christian Culture (1960) and features selections from numerous works, including The Making of Europe (1932), The Judgment of the Nations (1943), and Medieval Essays (1959).

Dawson believed that the modern era challenged traditional ways of living through its denigration of historical memory. He emphasized the need to understand the role religious values had played in the formation of culture, especially Western culture, and their continuing influence in world affairs. He sought to reconnect Europe's material wealth and economic power with the fundamental religious values that once had formed the core of European identity.

This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the development of Dawson's thinking on questions that remain of contemporary importance. It illustrates Dawson's approach in defining "Christian culture," its likelihood in the present era, and its adaptability to non-Western and pluralist societies. The collection also provides insight on issues ranging from the "new evangelization" and the future of modern liberalism to the "clash of civilizations" that is emerging as the newest challenge in the post-Communist world.

Christianity and European Culture will be of interest to students and scholars of history, historiography, theology, and the history of ideas. It is intended also for those interested in Dawson himself, or in twentieth-century Catholic intellectual history.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"Superbly introduced and shrewdly chosen, this selection of hard-to-find Dawson essays is a powerful contribution. It covers all the central themes of this greatest of all historians of Christian cultures."―Michael Novak, American Enterprise Institute

"No one was more keenly aware than Christopher Dawson of the need to recover a sense of Western history-and Christianity's centrality to that history-in order to understand the modern world in which we live. Russello's selections from Dawson provide a marvelous introduction to the thought of an unjustly neglected twentieth-century giant. A great book that I hope will lead to the republication of all of Dawson.―Robert Royal, Ethics and Public Policy Center

"A profound collection of essays from the vast corpus of Dawson studies. . . . Dawson remains an essential teacher about the content of the modern mind and whence it came. His judgments about man's worldly and transcendent meaning are always on the mark."―James V. Schall, S.J., Georgetown University

"Those concerned with the state of liberal education or the interrelationship of culture, education, and religion will find the late Dawson's essays of more than historical importance. . . ."―Booklist

"For students of Western culture, Christopher Dawson is an indispensable guide. His opera omnia would number more than twenty-five volumes if brought together in a uniform edition. Absent that, Gerald Russello provides in these selections a valuable collection that can only whet one's appetite for further texts. His introduction to the volume is excellent and in itself worthy of Dawson for its lucidity and vision."―The Intercollegiate Review

From Booklist
Those concerned with the state of liberal education or the interrelationship of culture, education, and religion will find the late Dawson's essays of more than historical interest. The ones gathered here, written between 1930 and 1960, reflect a struggle on three fronts--against Fascism, against Stalinism, and against secularism--that dates but doesn't archaize them. The question Dawson keeps returning to is that of the relationship between Christianity and European culture. Because Dawson sees the two as being intrinsically connected, he sees an assault on either as an assault on both. That will be instructive for readers trying to make sense of the current "culture wars," debates over multiculturalism, and passionate arguments about language. Dawson's insistence that a common language and a common culture are essential for civilization puts him in the "conservative" camp, but he attends to culture with a seriousness that will interest multiculturalists and to education with a seriousness that will interest those all along the political-cultural spectrum who are committed to obtaining something more from teaching and learning than technique. Steve Schroeder

Christianity and Culture Explained
By Steve Jackson
Christopher Dawson (1889-1870) was a Roman Catholic author and historian. He, along with a number of fellow coverts, created a Renaissance of English Catholic scholarship.
This book contains the full text of Dawson's 1960 work, "The Historic Reality of Christian Culture," as well as several essays touching on the general theme of Christianity and European culture. "The Historic Reality of Christian Culture" is an important work explaining why one can speak of a Christian culture. As Dawson notes, no one would describe Arabic culture without a mention of Islam, but when it comes to Europe, culture is discussed as if Christianity wasn't a significant factor.
The essays in this work are excellent. In particular, I liked the essay "The Classical Tradition and Christianity." The merging of Christianity and Classical Culture was one of the most momentous facts in world history. In "The Secularization of Western Culture," Dawson draws attention to the neglected figure of Tommaso Campanella, whom he regards as the forerunner of modern revolutionary socialism.
There is one other collection of essays by Dawson that I'm aware of: DYNAMICS OF WORLD HISTORY. It is a bit lengthier and contains some of the same essays, as well as essays on a broader range of topics. In addition, after this work was published, Catholic University Press started publishing Dawson's Collected Works.

Backwards Into The Future; Preserving Our Christian Culture.
By Bob Mulle
Dawson was one of the great historians of western, christian culture. He also brought a knowledge of sociology and psychology to the study of the basis for our classic western civilization. His thesis is quite simple, a culture is a reflection of the ethics and beliefs of the people who form the base society. While western culture is much more "diverse" than many contemporary academics wish to admit, the foundation of our art, literature, law, (as well as religion), all lie in our Christian experience and world view. One of Dawson's more prescient points is the correlation between a religious foundation for our civilization and the seperation of same which has recently led to a deterioration of the basic values and mores that have given the western world all that we hold dear. While written several decades ago, many of Dawson's observations prove to be almost prophetic. If you are a fan of the "permanent things", or are at all concerned with the question of how to restore our way of life, you will want to read this book.
