Funeral Festivals in America: Rituals for the Living (Material Worlds Series), by Jacqueline S. Thursby

When Evelyn Waugh wrote The Loved One (1948) as a satire of the elaborate preparations and memorialization of the dead taking place in his time, he had no way of knowing how technical and extraordinarily creative human funerary practices would become in the ensuing decades.

In Funeral Festivals in America, author Jacqueline S. Thursby explores how modern American funerals and their accompanying rituals have evolved into affairs that help the living with the healing process. Thursby suggests that there is irony in the festivities surrounding death. The typical American response to death often develops into a celebration that reestablishes links or strengthens ties between family members and friends. The increasingly important funerary banquet, for example, honors an often well-lived life in order to help survivors accept the change that death brings and to provide healing fellowship. At such celebrations and other forms of the traditional wake, participants often use humor to add another dimension to expressing both the personality of the deceased and their ties to a particular ethnic heritage.

In her research and interviews, Thursby discovered the paramount importance of food as part of the funeral ritual. During times of loss, individuals want to be consoled, and this is often accomplished through the preparation and consumption of nourishing, comforting foods. In the Intermountain West, Funeral Potatoes, a potato-cheese casserole, has become an expectation at funeral meals; Muslim families often bring honey flavored fruits and vegetables to the funeral table for their consoling familiarity; and many Mexican Americans continue the tradition of tamale making as a way to bring people together to talk, to share memories, and to simply enjoy being together.

Funeral Festivals in America examines rituals for loved ones separated by death, frivolities surrounding death, funeral foods and feasts, post-funeral rites, and personalized memorials and grave markers. Thursby concludes that though Americans come from many different cultural traditions, they deal with death in a largely similar approach. They emphasize unity and embrace rites that soothe the distress of death as a way to heal and move forward.

Review
"A fascinating study of American resilience and community spirit at times of bereavement. Jacqueline Thursby reveals with wit and sensitivity how American funerals have become celebrations of life, instead of lamentations of death, at which loved ones mend torn relations through sumptuous banquets, heart-warming memories, and gregarious laughter. She demonstrates with exquisite detail how the restoration of communal ties among the bereaved stands central in contemporary American mortuary rituals, irrespective of their cultural, ethnic, and religious differences.""―Antonius C.G.M. Robben, editor of Death, Mourning, and Burial: A Cross-Cultural

"A welcome discussion of the varied rites that surround death in contemporary and historical America."―Journal of Folklore Research

"A large percentage of Americans in modern society are culturally illiterate in community expectations regarding death rituals. Jacqueline S. Thursby's cross-cultural treatment of current practice provides a primer for Americans hoping to respond appropriately when friends from diverse backgrounds and belief systems are in mourning... By placing today's community and family expectations within the context of their own cultural and religious heritages, the monograph is an excellent introduction into funerary literature."―Register of the Kentucky Historical Society

"Intriguing. . . . Explores some of the most significant and unique of our methods of dealing with the omnipresence of death in our lives."―Studies in American Culture

Once thought to be only the tipple of southern gentlemen and the companion of confederate roughnecks, bourbon has gained a steady resurgence in popularity over the years with an ever-expanding and diverse audience. In The Kentucky Bourbon Cookbook, Albert Schmid provides readers with the best recipes using the famous spirit of the Bluegrass. Schmid uses the four distinct seasons of the Bluegrass State to guide the reader through this rich collection of bourbon dishes and color photographs. In many ways a lesson on the flavor profiles that pair with and improve the flavor of bourbon, this book can be used by the home cook and the professional chef alike for inspiration to create new dishes. You want my Bourbon to cook?
By James W. Durney
"Bourbon is a kind of whiskey." Is the first line of chapter one. While true, Bourbon is a distinct taste and something that people either like or won't touch. I have enjoyed Bourbon most of my life, many times being the only one to drink it. This book says Bourbon is for cooking as well as drinking. The author makes a very good case with a series of recipes that will cover your table with food.
Some are whimsical: A Kentucky Breakfast, a steak, a quart of Bourbon and a dog. Give the steak to the dog, drink the Bourbon, to the very serious requiring some cooking skill to prepare. The majority are "normal" recipes that will not tax your skills or drive you crazy.
The first chapter is drinks. The next four chapters are Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. A short introduction talks about seasonal events, the process of creating Bourbon and growing corn. Recipes supporting the season covering soups, main dishes, sides and deserts follow this. This is a cookbook first, last and always. This is not a tour of Kentucky or a love of Bourbon book. This book is a look at how to use Bourbon to produce tasty dishes.
My question is do I want to take what I enjoy drinking for cooking?

WSJ Review
By A Kentuckian in PA
Aram Bakshian's review in the Wall Street Journal (May 8-9, 2020)is favorable enough for me to order 2 copies. A convincing line is "As with most good home cooking, the emphasis is not on the paistaking or exotic but on easy prep and easy eating".

Fun gift to give someone!
By J. Blum
I received this as a gift and love the variety of recipes and the tried and true nature of them. I also like the way that the recipes are organized by season so that I can make use of fresh seasonal ingredients, and not only think of using bourbon as an ingredient for a winter dish. Reading through the recipes I am inspired to give them a try and incorporate bourbon dishes throughout the year. The only time I have ever used bourbon as an ingredient is for a decadent bourbon chocolate sauce for a scrumptious chocolate bread pudding, and so I am looking forward to going beyond a limited dessert selection and adding bourbon to other courses.

The Complete Works of Liudprand of Cremona (Medieval Texts in Translation), by Luidprand

This modern English translation of all the surviving literary compositions ascribed to Liudprand, the bishop of Cremona from 962 to 972, offers unrivaled insight into society and culture in western Europe during the "iron century." Since Liudprand enjoyed the favor of the Saxon Roman emperor Otto the Great, and traveled to Constantinople more than once on official business, his narratives also reveal European attitudes toward the Byzantine Empire and the culture of its refined capital city. No other tenth-century writer had such privileged access to the high spheres of power, or such acerbic wit and willingness to articulate critiques of the doings of powerful people.

Liudprand's historical texts (the Antapodosis on European events in the first half of the 900s, and his Historia Ottonis on the rise to power of Otto the Great) provide a unique view of the recent past against a genuinely European backdrop, unusual in a time of localized cultural horizons. Liudprand's famous satirical description of his misadventures as Ottonian legate at the Byzantine court in 968 is a vital source of information on Byzantine ritual and diplomatic process, as well as a classic of medieval intercultural encounter. This collection of Liudprand's works also includes his recently discovered Easter sermon, a rare early document of Jewish-Christian intellectual polemic.

Readers interested in medieval European culture, the history of diplomacy, Italian and German medieval history, and the history of Byzantium will find this collection of translated texts rewarding. A full introduction and extensive notes help readers to place Liudprand's writings in context.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"Few medieval chroniclers are more enjoyable to read than Liudprand of Cremona, the well-traveled Italian courtier, ecclesiastic, and ambassador. . . . Paolo Squatriti has done scholars and students an important service by offering fresh translations . . . plus the first rendering in English of a homily written by Liudprand. . . . The translator has carefully combed the scholarly literature on Liudprand in English, Italian, and German, with emphasis on work done in the last twenty years. A synthesis of sorts appears in a substantial introduction. . . . There follow four texts, in more or less chronological order, with extremely helpful explanatory and bibliographic notes aimed 'to ease the task of students in unraveling Liudprand's culture' (viii). The translation is accurate and faithful, navigating with considerable success the often choppy structure and precious style of Liudprand. . . . Writer and translator seem to come fully into their own with 'Embassy,' a total treat to read here. . . . Students will find much to learn about and chew over in each of these texts and by looking at them as a group. . . . Squatriti has given students and scholars an English Liudprand for the twenty-first century that is an important resource for extending our understanding of the tenth." ― Bruce Venarde, The Medieval Review

"At last―a new, up-to-date translation of the Works of Liudprand (or Liutprand) of Cremona. Paolo Squatriti's version has much to commend it. It moves away from the "forsooth language" of the old translation by F.A. Wright and builds on the more recent work of Brian Scott; it captures Liudprand's chameleon-like changes of style in an eminently readable version, and it provides a useful introduction to recent scholarly work on the author and his times. . . . As befits a translator who is both historian and literary scholar, Squatriti's introduction has much of interest to say. . . . A vivi

review of Liudprand Cremona
By B. Jarvis
I rate this item at 3 stars simply because its so specific I don't expect it would appeal to the average history reader. Liudprand had some obvious biases towards the Byzantines and he wasn't treated the way he thought he should have been while being a representative of the Papacy in Rome. However, there is some very good insight into attitudes and positions of religious authorities of the times. The Roman Catholic felt they should receive the same superior authority then as they did hundreds of years before when the Eastern Empire felt they had transcended subserviance to the Roman Church by that time....

Rhetoric, Science, and Magic in Seventeenth-Century England, by Ryan J. Stark

Rhetoric operated at the crux of seventeenth-century thought, from arguments between scientists and magicians to anxieties over witchcraft and disputes about theology. Writers on all sides of these crucial topics stressed rhetorical discernment, because to the astute observer the shape of one's eloquence was perhaps the most reliable indicator of the heart's piety or, alternatively, of demonry. To understand the period's tenor, we must understand the period's rhetorical thinking, which is the focus of this book.

Ryan J. Stark presents a spiritually sensitive, interdisciplinary, and original discussion of early modern English rhetoric. He shows specifically how experimental philosophers attempted to disenchant language. While rationalists and skeptics delighted in this disenchantment, mystics, wizards, and other practitioners of mysterious arts vehemently opposed the rhetorical precepts of modern science. These writers used tropes not as plain instruments but rather as numinous devices capable of transforming reality. On the contrary, the new philosophers perceived all esoteric language as a threat to learning's advancement, causing them to disavow both nefarious forms of occult spell casting and, unfortunately, edifying forms of wonderment and incantation. This fundamental conflict between scientists and mystics over the nature of rhetoric is the most significant linguistic happening in seventeenth-century England, and, as Stark argues, it ought profoundly to inform how we discuss the rise of modern English writing.

"This extremely well-written, thoughtful book sets out to defend the new scientific writers (members of the Royal Society, inaugurated in 1662 to discuss and foster the study of the physical sciences) from the charge that 'those who attack rhetoric. . . Continued to use it'. . . .Stark is eloquent in pursuing a thesis that attacks the eloquence that makes his own book so readable, engaging, and absorbing."--John Mulryan, Cithara

"Stark investigates this mare's nest of models and influences to conclude that seventeenth-century writers deployed what he calls a 'new plain style,' distinct from the old and devised in opposition to occultism, spell-casting, sorcery, and magical thinking."--Alvin Snider, Renaissance Quarterly

"Stark takes readers on an intriguing journey into the seventeenth-century rhetorical mind. . . . Stark's argument establishes beyond much doubt that a magical view of language dominated English prose and poetry in the decades prior to the founding of the Royal Society in 1660. . . . Ryan Stark has provided students of rhetoric a sound, well-documented and persuasive introduction to the topic of late Renaissance magic and rhetoric in England. Rhetoric, Science and Magic in Seventeenth-Century England is an important book and one that ought to change our thinking about the history of English rhetorical theory." --James A. Herrick, Rhetoric and Public Affairs

"[T]he book is a cryptonomicon that traces the crisis of enchantment in early modernity as a crisis of style, illuminating some of the most difficult riddles of language in the new millennium. I recommend it not only for students of the period, but for apprentices, and even masters, of the arts of enchantment." --Anthony Lioi, JAC

Magic!
By Tina Skouen
Being a scholar of seventeenth-century literature and rhetoric I absolutely loved this study, especially the thought-provoking analysis of Thomas Sprat's History of the Royal Society from 1667. Stark argues convincingly that Sprat was anti-occult, not anti-rhetoric, and contrasts Sprat's own use of rhetorical figures with that of e.g. Rosicrucian magicians. Non-specialist readers will find the book gives a very helpful overview of the relationship between rhetoric and (occult) philosophy in the period. The chapter on "Demonic eloquence" is just brilliant.

Saint Thomas Aquinas, Vol. 2: Spiritual Master, by Jean Pierre Torrell

Following his highly acclaimed study of the life and works of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Jean-Pierre Torrell, O.P., continues his masterful work on the great Dominican theologian and brings an immense learning to bear on a subject that most readers have not considered very carefully: Thomas's spirituality. Aquinas's intellectual power is evident to anyone who has had even modest exposure to his work. Understanding the spiritual impetus behind that massive achievement, however, requires careful attention to the whole Thomistic corpus and a subtle understanding of several crucial works, particularly Thomas's sermons and commentaries on Scripture. In this long-awaited sequel to Saint Thomas Aquinas: The Person and His Work, Father Torrell brilliantly lays out the theoretical background to Thomas's spirituality. He shows that Aquinas's theology is clearly oriented towards contemplation and is as deeply spiritual as it is doctrinal.

Meticulous in his research, Torrell quotes often from Thomas's own texts and presents a clear understanding of Aquinas's views on nature, the person, human society, politics, and our ultimate end in communion with God and one another. This volume makes apparent why the Catholic Church thinks of Aquinas not only as a great Christian intellectual, but also as a saint.

Praise for Volume 1, The Person and His Work:

"This is the introduction to Thomas. . . ."―First Things

"The most up-to-date biography available."―Choice

"[A] magnificent achievement. . . . An indispensable tool for every student of Thomas Aquinas."―The Thomist

"Torrell's book is the crown of recent research into Aquinas."―Theological Studies

Jean-Pierre Torrell is a Dominican priest of the Toulouse province and professor of dogmatic theology at the University of Fribourg. From 1973 to 1981, he taught at the Gregorian University in Rome and was a member of the Leonine Commission, where he contributed to research on and editing of Aquinas's works.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"This is a worthy successor to Torrell's excellent volume 1, The Person and His Work."―John M. McDermott, Theological Studies

"Torrell seeks to recover not just the doctor angelicus but the doctor communis ecclesiae, the teacher of all the faithful. We owe a great deal to Father Torrell for achieving in this volume nothing less than a kind of transfusion from the cold, analytical, mathematical systematic Aquinas of the textbooks into the red-blooded, passionate, even psychologically intense spiritual guide who is at once cerebral and sentient, surprising as that may appear. . . . Torrell brings a lifetime of immersion in the works of Aquinas to bear on what is quite simply a most lucid and insightful outline of Thomas's theology as a whole. . . . There is nothing more that one can say about this volume than that there is simply no other book like it. It fills an enormous gap, not just in Aquinas scholarship, but also in the portrait of 'Friar Thomas' as it has come down to us. In this respect, Torrell's work serves as a crowning moment in what has been something like a 'resuscitation' of Thomas Aquinas in recent years. His work caps a century's worth of revival of interest in Aquinas, and it is entirely likely that, taken together, these two volumes will become the classic introduction to the life and work of 'the Master from Aquino.' "―Peter M. Candler, Jr., American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly

"The breadth of historical learning and the depth of theological insight is rare indeed. Neither for beginners nor for the impatient, this book will abundantly reward careful reading by theologians of any persuasion."- Denis R. Janz, Religious Studies Review

"Fr. Torrell not only offers a remarkable exposition of t

Saint Thomas Aquinas, Vol. 1. The Person and His Work by Jean-Pierre Torrel

I do not know why Amazon only asked me to review volume 2 since I order both volumes together. But if you read the first volume you THEN will want the second volume. Torrell is fascinating in his 'biography' because A. he sticks strictly to the facts which is B. written materials as contemporary as possible with Aquinas if not actually in his own hand which in turn mean C. you learn about his works in some detail with fascinating side notes [Torrell once quotes Nietzsche's ALSO SPRACH ZARATHUSTRA to make a point about Aquinas and what he says about the prologue of the early COMMENTARY ON BOETHIUS' HEBDOMADS is absolutely astounding and led me into a side spate of reading to understand the meaning and context of that!] that truly give you an IN DEPTH picture in Aquinas' contemporary context without modern day hagiographic glossing over of things inexplicable or possibly embarrassing as `inappropriate' for whatever reason. It is ABSOLUTELY essential to a REAL UNDERSTANDING of Aquinas!

African Americans have had a profound impact on the economy, culture, and social landscape of southern Appalachia but only after a surge of study in the last two decades have their contributions been recognized by white culture. Appalachians and Race brings together 18 essays on the black experience in the mountain South in the nineteenth century. These essays provide a broad and diverse sampling of the best work on race relations in this region. The contributors consider a variety of topics: black migration into and out of the region, educational and religious missions directed at African Americans, the musical influences of interracial contacts, the political activism of blacks during reconstruction and beyond, the racial attitudes of white highlanders, and much more. Drawing from the particulars of southern mountain experiences, this collection brings together important studies of the dynamics of race not only within the region, but throughout the South and the nation over the course of the turbulent nineteenth century.

A great addition to my growing history book library.

Read this for my Medieval European History class. It was like reading a George RR Martin book, but the stuff actually happened. I couldn't put it down. I probably read it 5 times before the paper I used it for was done.

The Deeds of Louis the Fat - The Thoughts of Suger the Abbot
By Nicholas Casley
A translation of Suger's Deeds of Louis the Fat is here presented in an accessible and readable form for both students and the general reader. There is a concise yet comprehensive twenty-page introduction, an accompanying map, and an index at the end. There are both footnotes and endnotes, which is unfortunate, since those seeking further background information must refer to both. This can be a bit of a handful when not reading at a desk. It would have been far better to have all notes set at the foot of each page.

The translation, introduction and notation have been undertaken by Richard Cusimano of the University of Southwestern Louisiana and by John Moorhead at the University of Queensland. In their introduction they point to the work's value by seeing Louis's reign as a pivotal era in the progress of French monarchical consolidation. But they also view the work as important in the context of Suger's own life and literary style. And indeed the work can often be seen to be more about Suger than about Louis. The writers explore the background to the reasons why it was written and why it was written in the way that it was, for the title was not Suger's own.

Their analysis includes comparisons with other twelfth-century (and earlier) texts and writers of a similar genre are made. They point out why the work cannot be treated as a biography per se of Louis VI, for there is a concentration on secondary details, whilst primary facts of Louis's life - his knighthood, his presence at the court of England's Henry I, his marriage, etc - are ignored. The secondary features that are mentioned, however, conform suspiciously with Suger's own views about kingship and the primacy of his abbey at St-Denis. That is not to say that Suger's account of Louis's deeds cannot be trusted, for he was clearly present at many of the events described and he writes about them with the air of someone who has no difficulty in remembering details.

The translators end their introduction with details about the difficulties they encountered with the translation in terms of style as well as content. Suger employed a sometimes convoluted literary style, re-inforcing his meaning by allusions to contemporary theological ideas, "But just when the temptation to despair is strongest, the reader comes along a witty turn of phrase or pun that alerts one to the fact that, at least sometimes, Suger knew very well what he was doing."

Whatever problems the translators had to overcome in their work, the reader of this volume need not worry about, as the English text flows smoothly from chapter to chapter. This is a fine volume that will be of use to students in a number of disciplines and will be of value also to the general reader.

The Deeds of Louis the Fat
By Mithridates VI of Pontus
Suger of St. Denis (1080/81-1151) is best known for his promotion of what we call Gothic architecture but he was also an important politician and historian. Suger was most likely given as an oblate at the age of ten to the Abbey of St. Denis. After he completed his studies he accompanied Abbot Adam on diplomatic missions to Pope Paschal II among others. He rapidly gained administrative experience and became abbot of St. Denis after Adam's death.

Louis VI (1081-1137) the Fat, the eldest son of Philip I (1053-1108), was likewise educated at St. Denis. However, he was declared the heir only after a period of uncertainty when Philip I forsakes Louis mother in favor of the wife of one of his vassals, Fulk IV of Anjou.

The `France' of Louis VI and Abbot Suger was centered around Paris and the Ile-de-France. This controlled by Louis VI but even here he constantly had to assert himself against powerful local castellans (men with in charge of castles). Most of Louis VI's nobles who theoretically owed their land to him were more powerful and could raise larger armies then their feudal overlord. The king therefore only occasionally acted against his powerful lords and concentrated on regaining royal control on his own dominion.

The Deeds of Louis the Fat is not a biography in the modern sense but does provide vital information for this important king's reign. The Deeds was written in the style of other famous chroniclers of the time. This type of history concentrates on individual deeds rather than a comprehensive documentation of events. But it would be wrong to see this work as merely a collection of incidents chronologically arranged for Suger has an agenda and structure. He was close to Louis and sought to illustrate the king's support of the Church, thus, many entries chronicler the King's intervention on part of a church against a powerful noble. Likewise, Suger sought to contrast Louis with his womanizing father, Philip I, who put the love of a married woman above the just ruling of a kingdom.

The introduction puts the text in a historical background but also provides some interesting comments on the Suger's purpose of composition and the 'individual' St Denis (who was actually a combination of three individuals who lived centuries apart), the patron of Suger's Abbey. The introduction is very approachable and easy to understand (in other words not in the dry scholarly vein). The text however, is what gives this volume five stars.

A General Who Will Fight: The Leadership of Ulysses S. Grant, by Harry S. Laver

Prior to his service in the Civil War, Ulysses S. Grant exhibited few characteristics indicating that he would be an extraordinary leader. His performance as a cadet was mediocre, and he finished in the bottom half of his class at West Point. However, during his early service in the Civil War, most notably at the battles of Shiloh and Vicksburg, Grant proved that he possessed an uncommon drive. When it was most crucial, Grant demonstrated his integrity, determination, and tactical skill by taking control of the Union troops and leading his forces to victory.

A General Who Will Fight is a detailed study of leadership that explores Grant's rise from undisciplined cadet to commanding general of the United States Army. Some experts have attributed Grant's success to superior manpower and technology, to the help he received from other Union armies, or even to a ruthless willingness to sacrifice his own men. Harry S. Laver, however, refutes these arguments and reveals that the only viable explanation for Grant's success lies in his leadership skill, professional competence, and unshakable resolve. Much more than a book on military strat-egy, this innovative volume examines the decision-making process that enabled Grant both to excel as an unquestioned commander and to win.

Leadership as a process of learning and determination
By Theodore A. Rushton
In contrast to most peope, myself included, the great strength of Ulysses Grant was his ability to recognize and correct his mistakes - - which is probably the enduring quality of the U.S. military to this day.

Grant made plenty of mistakes, and a lot of Union soldiers died as a result. But, unlike many officers, he seldom made the same mistake twice. Grant's other quality was his uncommon determination to succeed, at least when commanding others whose lives rested on his decisions. In Laver's words, he had "an uncommon drive".

The focus is on Grant in the Civil War. After all, this book is about leadership; it's not a biography. In the Mexican War, Grant ended up in the Quartermaster corps, after leaving the Army he repeatedly failed in private business. When the Civil War broke out, his political connections resulted in his return to the Army as a colonel of the Illinois 21st Regiment of Volunteers.

His first battle at Belmont, Missouri, was a disaster. But he learned. Late in the war his greatest blunder was Cold Harbour, another mistake never repeated. Unlike some who repeat mistakes, Grant always switched tactics after a setback, He never sacrificed troops to offset a mistake. He gave his troops victory after victory; in winning, the dead never complain and survivors are proud of their victory.

As Laver writes again and again and again, "There was no fallback in U. S. Grant."

This applied to jealous rivalries within the military; for some there is nothing more bitter than others who are brilliantly successful. This is the second element of leadership, which Laver duly recognizes and explains; successful leaders must not only succeed in their assigned duties, they must overcome jealousies of less competent superiors and avoid petty politicians.

It's what makes this book so interesting; within 164 pages Laver sums up the nature of leadership challenges within the military and within the politics of Washington. In brief, successful "leadership" is more than doing well, it's also overcoming obtuse superiors and publicity seeking politicians.

It makes this book a vivid example of leadership that can be applied to any field of endeavour. In brief, a major element of leadership is overcoming the doubts, ignorance and jealousies of people of lesser talent, ambition and ability.

A Great Force of Will
By Christian Schlect
Professor Harry S. Laver provides the reader a useful, short study of U.S. Grant's military leadership; leadership that eventually propelled his army to final victory at Appomattox Courthouse.

I think this book would be a good one to hand out to those early in their careers, such as mid-managers in large corporations or junior officers in the military, as an educational tool. The lesson: Relentless determination mixed with good judgement will take you far.

I doubt if those who have read any of the many recent full biographies of General Grant will find anything new here. However, if this is the first book a person reads about U.S. Grant, it should prompt that person to further exploration of both this significant historical figure and the great war that enveloped our country 150 years ago.

The Education of U.S. Grant as a Commander
By A. A. Nofi
A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com:

'Prof. Laver (Southeastern Louisiana), also the author of The Art of Command: Military Leadership from George Washington to Colin Powell and Citizens More than Soldiers: The Kentucky Militia and Society in the Early Republic, examines the career of U.S. Grant who, in 1861, would certainly not have seemed likely to attain great success in the profession of arms. What Laver sees in Grant, however, is a man who could learn and did not often make the same mistake twice. Service in Mexico not only exposed Grant to the different, yet equally able officers Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott, but also taught him how to lead troops and manage logistics. His early actions in the Civil War were hardly distinguished, but usually successful, and by his own admission educational. Where most other generals started out with inflated notions of their skills, and didn't seem to learn much - not even Robert E. Lee - Grant began modestly, and slowly grew better, by identifying and learning from both success and failure. A good read for anyone needing an short introduction to Grant or for those interested in the problem of military leadership.'

On Love and Charity: Readings from the

Among the great works of Thomas Aquinas, the Commentary on the Sentences of Peter Lombard has suffered almost total neglect among translators. Such neglect is surprising, considering that the massive Commentary―more than 4,000 pages in the last printed edition―is not only Aquinas's first systematic engagement with all the philosophical and theological topics on which he expended his energy over the span of a short career but is also characterized by an exuberance and elaborateness seldom found in his subsequent writings. Although Chenu had already drawn attention decades ago to the importance of studying this youthful tour de force for a fuller understanding of Thomas's more mature work, the Commentary on the Sentences has remained a closed book for many modern students of Thomistic and medieval thought because of its relative inaccessibility in English or in Latin.

The present volume, containing all the major texts on love and charity, makes available what is by far the most extensive translation ever to be made from the Commentary with the added benefit that the better part of the translation is based on the (as yet unpublished) critical edition of the Leonine Commission. The collection of texts from all four books has a tight thematic coherence that makes it invaluable to students of Thomas's moral philosophy, moral theology, and philosophical theology. In addition, the inclusion of parallel texts from Aquinas's first (Parisian) Commentary as well as from his second (Roman) attempt at a commentary, the recently rediscovered Lectura Romana, makes this edition all the more valuable for those who wish to track the internal development of Thomas's thinking on these matters.

The new availability of so many rich passages from the Commentary on the Sentences will encourage and facilitate use of a magnificent resource that deserves to be better known.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"[T]he present volume contains by far the most extensive English translation from the Scriptum to date. . . . The translators of On Love and Charity have aimed to give a translation which is neither too literal nor too liberal, trying to find the golden mean between an unintelligibly Latinised or an enjoyable but unfaithful English version. . . . This impressive volume will be of a great help for those wishing to study Aquinas and the issue of love in more depth."―B. Toth, Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses

Fantastic Translation!
By Matthew
This is the first major work on translating St. Thomas' Commentary on the Sentences. It is of course a selection (not the whole commentary) on his questions on love and charity. This is the work of translators who are not only skilled latinists but have a deep understanding of the thought of St. Thomas. These skills come across in the footnotes (which are extremely helpful in understanding why the translation is what it is at difficult points and includes the Latin at these points for reference) and the great webnotes that were written for the text ([...]).
These texts are helpful to understand St. Thomas in a deeper way on love and charity which is sometimes a very difficult topic. I highly recommend these texts from Thomas and this translation (if indeed it must be read in translation).
