The Philosophy of Charlie Kaufman (Philosophy Of Popular Culture)From University Press of Kentucky

From the Academy Award-winning Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) and Academy Award-nominated Adaptation (2002) to the cult classic Being John Malkovich (1999), writer Charlie Kaufman is widely admired for his innovative, philosophically resonant films. Although he only recently made his directorial debut with Synecdoche, New York (2008), most fans and critics refer to "Kaufman films" the way they would otherwise discuss works by directors Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, or the Coen brothers. Not only has Kaufman transformed our sense of what can take place in a film, but he also has made a significant impact on our understanding of the role of the screenwriter.
The Philosophy of Charlie Kaufman, edited by David LaRocca, is the first collection of essays devoted to a rigorous philosophical exploration of Kaufman's work by a team of capable and critical scholars from a wide range of disciplines. From political theorists to philosophers, classicists to theologians, professors of literature to filmmakers, the contributing authors delve into the heart of Kaufman's innovative screenplays, offering not only original philosophical analyses but also extended reflections on the nature of film and film criticism.

Like philosophy in general, these essays may be way off the mark in their dissections of Kaufman's creations, but they are nevertheless thought-provoking and never dull.

I appreciate the respect every author showed for Kaufman's work, and I never got the sense that any writer was writing a fanciful, half-baked essay to get paid. I am somewhat bemused by the idea of the philosophy series about anything entertainment, but if there is a more fitting subject for philosophical exegesis, then it's kaufman's oeuvre. Great read.

The Early Christian Book (Studies In Early Christianity), by William E. Klingshirn

From the very beginning Christianity was a religion of books―a lived, but also a written faith. The essays in this collection focus on the ways in which books were produced, used, treasured, and conceptualized in the early Christian centuries (AD 100―600). During this crucial period, just after the New Testament writings were composed, Christianity grew from the religion of a tiny minority in the eastern Roman Empire to the religion of the empire itself, and beyond. To no small extent, this success was based on the power of its books.

Written by experts in the field, the essays in this volume examine the early Christian book from a wide range of disciplines: religion, art history, history, Near Eastern studies, and classics. Topics include theories of the book, book production and use, books as sacred objects, and problems of gender, authorship, and authority.

By examining Christian books from multiple perspectives, this book invites readers into the entire "bookish" world of early Christianity: a world of writing and reading practices, of copying and exchanging texts, of persuading and debating with books, and of representing holiness and power through codices of the law, the scriptures, and the lives of the saints. Essays cover a wide geographical range and discuss texts written all across the Mediterranean world―in Greek, Latin, Coptic, Syriac, and Hebrew. All ancient texts are translated into English, some for the first time.

Intended for general readers, students, and scholars alike―anyone with a serious interest in early Christianity―this work brings together exciting currents of new research. It also opens up fresh questions and lines of inquiry in the study of this perennially important and fascinating subject.

An introduction by Philip Rousseau provides a valuable overview, followed by essays written by Daniel Boyarin, Catherine Burris, Catherine Chin, Gillian Clark, Catherine Conybeare, Kim Haines-Eitzen, Caroline Humfress, Chrysi Kotsifou, John Lowden, Claudia Rapp, Daniel Sarefield, and Mark Vessey. A comprehensive consolidated bibliography and index complete the work.

ABOUT THE EDITORS:

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"[T]his book as a whole will be important and pleasant reading for anyone seriously interested in Late Antiquity, while individual articles will be useful teaching resources." ― Ian H. Henderson, Bryn Mawr Classical Review

"Essays are written by formidable experts representing various disciplines. Art historian John Lowden provides insights on the luxury book through a meticulous study of treasured book covers, particularly those made of precious gems and metals. Catherine Burris approaches the Syriac Book of Women from the religious standpoint of Old Testament meeting New Testament, and aptly identifies the numerous subtleties inherent in aligning these texts. Historian Claudia Rapp's brilliant use of sources contextualizes for readers "holy texts, holy men and holy scribes," evoking the society and mind-set that enabled Christianity to flourish. The essays, illustrations, extensive bibliography, and authors' notes all are valuable in understanding the many facets of the book in the early centuries (100-600 CE). Summing up: Recommended." ― L. Doumato, Choice

"[Readers will] be left with a satisfying sense of having gained an insight into a wide range of stimulating topics. . . . This collection is provocative in its ideas, full of fascinating details, and on the whole very readable. The book is beautifully produced, with seventeen illustrations, and finishes with a comprehensive bibliography and a general index." ― C. White, Journal of Theological Studies

The five works of Augustine translated in this volume (De immortalitate animae, De quantitate animae, De musica, De utilitate credendi, and De fide rerum quae non videntur) are focused on the nature of the soul, its ability to find knowledge, and its relationships with the body, with the cosmos, and with God. All written within the first dozen years after Augustine's conversion, they display themes that are consistent with each other and that, when viewed in combination, add up to a belief in an incorporeal, immeasurable, and immortal soul in every human being that is in harmony with the universe and has access to the knowledge of unseen realities.

Stromateis, Books 1-3 (Fathers of the Church Patristic Series), by Clement of Alexandria

Titus Flavius Clemens Alexandrinus (ca. A.D. 150-215) wrote the Stromateis, possibly the third work in his trilogy―the Protrepticus, the Paedagogus, and the Stromateis―to direct Christian Gnostics toward the third stage of philosophy―gnosis. For Clement the only true gnosis was that which presupposed the faith of the Church, that is, apostolic and divinely revealed. But for Clement the ideas of Greek philosophy were also a divine gift to mankind. All of his writings reflect this reconciliation of faith and knowledge.

The full title of the Stromateis is Miscellanies of Notes of Revealed Knowledge in Accordance with the True Philosophy, and the word stromateis itself means a kind of patchwork quilt. Clement describes the work as a somewhat unorganized collection of flowers or trees that have grown together naturally. Of the eight books some are fragmented or incomplete, but all show Clement as philosopher, theologian, and biblical commentator.

Books One to Three in this volume all revolve around the relation of Christian faith to Greek philosophy. In Book One Clement defends a philosophy as given by God, a "preparation paving the way for him who is perfect in Christ" (Strom. 1.5.28). In Book Two he defends faith against the philosophers as the way to truth. Book Three explores the question of Christian marriage or true gnosis, while refuting the religious and moral principles of the false gnosis, that is, fornication and adultery. Within this book is a unique and beautiful exposition of "two or three gathered together" as husband, wife, and child.

Books One to Three of the Stromateis establish Clement's fundamental theology―a harmony of faith and knowledge that places Greek philosophy at the service of faith, which is, to Clement, more important than knowledge. Articulated in allegorical exegesis rather than literal interpretation, this interplay of philosophy and religion was the hallmark of the School of Alexandria. There Clement studied with Pantaenus and succeeded him as head of the school of catechumens. In order to establish the persecution of Septimius Severus, he took refuge in Cappadocia, where he died in A.D. 215, leaving his vast writings, his firmly held tenet that Greek philosophy and faith were not irreconcilable, and his method of allegorical interpretation to his student Origen, who formed it into a system.

Clement's works, however, remain for scholars today the first examples of Christian scholarship―writings that harmonize Christian doctrine and secular philosophy―enriched by his own comprehensive knowledge of early Christian literature and secular education. This is the first English translation based on the new critical editions in SC (1951) and GCS (1972).

The Kentucky Derby: How the Run for the Roses Became America's Premier Sporting Event, by James C. Nicholson

Each year on the first Saturday in May, the world turns its attention to the twin spires of Churchill Downs for the high-stakes excitement of the "greatest two minutes in sports," the Kentucky Derby. No American sporting event can claim the history, tradition, or pageantry that the Kentucky Derby holds. For more than 130 years, spectators have been fascinated by the magnificent horses that run the Louisville track. Thoroughbreds such as Secretariat and Barbaro have earned instant international fame, along with jockeys such as Isaac Murphy, Ron Turcotte, and Calvin Borel. The Kentucky Derby: How the Run for the Roses Became America's Premier Sporting Event calls this great tradition to post and illuminates its history and culture.

Rising from its humble beginnings as an American variation of England's Epsom Derby, the Kentucky Derby became a centerpiece of American sports and the racing industry, confirming Kentucky's status as the Horse Capital of the World. James C. Nicholson argues that the Derby, at its essence, is a celebration of a place, existing as a connection between Kentucky's mythic past and modern society. The Derby is more than just a horse race―it is an experience enhanced by familiar traditions, icons, and images that help Derby fans to understand Kentucky and define themselves as Americans. Today the Kentucky Derby continues to attract international attention from royalty, celebrities, racing fans, and those who simply enjoy an icy mint julep, a fabulous hat, and a wager on who will make it to the winner's circle.

Nicholson provides an intriguing and thorough history of the Kentucky Derby, examining the tradition, spectacle, culture, and evolution of the Kentucky Derby―the brightest jewel of the Triple Crown.

Review
"Winner of the Kentucky Literary Award for Non-fiction

Winner of the the Kentucky History Award"

"Many books have been published about the Kentucky Derby that deal with elements of the race such as the horses, jockeys, owners, and trainers. This book is much more than that ― it places the Derby within the history of the Commonwealth and in the broader context of American culture."―John Kleber, editor of The Kentucky Encyclopedia

"Nicholson has done a masterful job of researching the historical events that made the Derby the enthralling and significant event it is... You may never get to experience the thrill of entering the winners' circle and smelling the wonderful aroma that emanates from the garland of roses that signifies the greatest achievement in the sport of Thoroughbred racing, but this wonderful book will take you on a journey that gets you as close as any piece of writing possibly could."―Chris McCarron, two-time Kentucky Derby winner and Hall of Fame inductee, from the foreword

"I have witnessed every modern Derby beginning in 1964 and have been privileged to write about the Derby many times. Through all of that involvement, however, I could never say that I really had my arms around just how the race came to be so embedded into the American soul. Now, Nicholson has provided that insight. In his lively telling, he explains the many strands of what is not so much a picture as a tapestry. Moreover, he brings us up to date as to the Derby's ability to withstand the winds of social change wrought by warfare, racial relations, and, of late, the international aspects of the grand old race."―Edward L. Bowen, author of nineteen books on Thoroughbred racing

"Nicholson's connections to the Thoroughbred industry all combine in this flowing, colorful but painstakingly-accurate history of the Kentucky Derby. His story is the design, the warp and weave of the fabric, and he knew where to source the embellishments which give this work its unique personality. Read this book and you will understand why, each year, this great nation holds its breath for two minutes late in the afternoon on the first Saturday in May."―Terence Collier, Fasig-Tipton Company, Inc.

"Nicholson has done a great job putting together historical facts and telling just enough of a story to make his book very interesting. It is obvious that the influence of his family's history and experiences in racing have helped him achieve this goal."―Richard Mandella, Hall of Fame trainer

"What is it about the Kentucky Derby that causes people who will not see another horse race all year to pay attention? The answer, James C. Nicholson explains, lies in the Derby's image being intertwined with that of Kentucky. The popular perception of the state as both genteel and untamed is played out in the event itself. In the early days of the Derby, an imagined link to the mythological Old South added to the appeal. Now, in the twenty-first century, the Derby has become an all-American sports experience. The Kentucky Derby: How the Run for the Roses Became America's Premier Sporting Event goes beyond the colorful history of the race and examines the reasons behind its popularity. It is not only an enjoyable read but also very enlightening."―Tom Hammond, NBC Kentucky Derby Host

"The Kentucky Derby: How the Run for the Roses Became America's Premier Sporting Event is both informative and entertaining. Providing the reader with a unique insight into how the Kentucky Derby has evolved over the past 135 years, Nicholson illuminates the history of Kentucky's signature sporting event, highlighting the culture, history, and rich tradition surrounding it."―Walt Robertson, Keeneland Vice President of Sales

"Keen observations . . . prove to be consistently powerful throughout the book, as the author touches on everything from the scandalous demise of celebrated black jockeys to the heavy influence of powerful Middle-Eastern sheiks."―Kirkus Reviews

"Does an excellent job describing the aura that surrounds America's most popular thoroughbred race."―Saratogan

"Likely to become a study that sets the new standard for books concerning thoroughbred racing, especially for ones dealing with the Kentucky Derby. . . . If you fail to read this book, you have missed a good one."―Northern Kentucky Heritage

"Essential reading for anyone interested in throughbred racing, American history and/or developing a successful campaign in one's industry"―Voices.Yahoo.com

"Explores how the paradoxical reputation of Kentucky for lawlessness and gentility is reflected in and helped sustain 'the most exciting two minutes in sports' despite significant cultural, political, and economic changes over its 138 year history."―University of Kentucky College of Arts & Sciences

"The favorite to be a winner for book lovers and Derby buffs alike."―Business Lexington

"A highly readable historical account of the myriad ways in which Louisville's iconic race has reflected the cultural and political climates of Kentucky as well as the world."―Louisville Courier-Journal

"You cannot help but come away from this book feeling that [Kentuckians] are savvy business people, brilliant marketers, sports enthusiasts, people passionate about a champion, a comeback, a longshot or an underdog, and yes―even blessed by God."―Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

"The romance and mythology surrounding this Derby are uncovered, from the winner's blanket of red roses to the souvenir mint julep glasses to the hats the size of parade floats."―Sunday Star Ledger

"Nicholson's book will appeal to aficionados of horse racing in general and the Kentucky Derby in particular, even if one does not live in the United States."―Horse Racing Business

"More than a list of horses, riders, trainers, and owners, this this book parallels the Derby, the state of Kentucky and the people who inhabit this country who find themselves ready to watch a horse race on the first Saturday in May for reasons they really cannot put a finger on. An excellent read."―The Past in Review

"A broader audience will find lively narration and deft writing that captures the often amusing discrepancies between fabrication and fact as Nicholson describes the Derby's journey from dusty horse race to international icon of the mythic American South."―The Historian

"A scholarly but very readable study of how the Derby grew from a regional attraction to a sports and entertainment event that attracts a world-wide audience"―Louisville Voice-Tribune

"Nicholson's insightful and often entertaining book...is about much more than a bunch of Thoroughbreds running races for 14 decades....Nicholson presents a history of a Derby that was forced to be nimble to change with the times marked by racial issues, drugs and war, and the emergence of international Thoroughbred owners. What makes the book so attractive to readers is the author's ability to tell engaging stories rather than simply give a chronology of facts.Kentucky Monthly"―Kentucky Monthly

"[. . .] James C. Nicholson's The Kentucky Derby: How the Run for the Roses Became America's Premier Sporting Event skillfully explores how popular media and collective memories reinvent the past, invent regional culture, and transform in response to larger social and political changes.

This book is a quick read but not a shallow one; it is filled with historical information and analysis of the event that is central to the identity of Kentucky and important to the public image of America."―Indiana Magazine of History

"[. . .] Nicholson's book provides an excellent overview of a man who deserves a lot of credit for the commercialization and expansion of sports to a much larger population in the 19th century. Anyone who enjoys reading sports history or stories of interesting characters in 19th century America should find The Notorious John Morrissey well worth their time."―Bowling Green Daily News

a great American event
By david l. poremba
There was a time, not so long ago, when reading the Daily Racing Form was required daily for a good percentage of the population; maybe not so much anymore but this reviewer tends to fall behind the times a bit. I am fairly certain that there are not too many people on the planet who have never heard of the Kentucky Derby, the "most exciting two minutes in sports". Even if you are not a horse racing fan, the bets are down that remember where you were in 1973 and Secretariat was beating every horse in sight, while setting track records for speed that are still records.
Nicholson traces the history of the derby back to England and discusses the trials, tribulations and successes of the Derby since its first running in 1875 up until 2010. More than a list of horses, riders, trainers and owners, this book parallels the Derby, the state of Kentucky and the people who inhabit this country who find themselves ready to watch a horse race on the first Saturday in May for reasons they really cannot put a finger on. An excellent read.

Historic Insight into a Piece of Southern Tradition
By Rebecca Graf
Too often, we don't know the history of an event that we are extremely familiar with. The Kentucky Derby is an annual event enjoyed across the country the first Saturday of each May. People from every walk of life, every economic level, and every race enjoy the tradition and excitement. The development of the event and the role it has played in American is largely forgotten. James C. Nicholson dives into the heart of the traditional horse racing event in his book, The Kentucky Derby: How the Run for the Roses Became America's Premier Sporting Event.

Tracing the history of the derby to England, Nicholson explores the birth of the Kentucky Derby and the world it was born into. From the 1800s through 2010, the book does more than recite the history of the national event but also the culture of the world around it and how it influenced that world. Nicholson explores the social issues that were addressed throughout the history of the Derby and the major players who became a part of the tradition.

Too many history books can be dry with a slow pace to the reading. Nicholson does not fall into this rut as he moves over two centuries of horse history. He does not repeat himself needlessly and brings in enough peripheral history to keep the story lively and colorful.

Nicholson's writing is easy to follow. It is entertaining and educational. The pictures that accompany the text help bring it to life and make the history real.

This book was especially special to me as I am from Kentucky and the Derby has been a part of my entire life. So much of the history that was mentioned in the book is a part of my own history being descendent from a coal miner, tobacco farmer, and World War II veteran. I read parts of the book aloud to my mother who remembered so much of the history. It brought back a lot of memories.

The book has an extensive bibliography and notes section. The book is not too long at just under 300 pages. The book I read and reviewed was a proof copy so that number could change at the final printing.
This is wonderful book for history enthusiasts, Kentucky Derby fans, Kentuckians, horse breeders, and anyone just interested in the book. Though the book might be too much for a ten year old, if they love horses they would still find it enjoyable. My ten year old daughter loved it.

Note: This book was provided to me by the publisher with no expectation of a positive review.

Must Read Book!
By Christine N. Ethier
Disclaimer: Read as an ARC via Netgalley.

In 1986, I watched my first Kentucky Derby. What I knew about horse racing at that time was what was in the Black Stallion novels and the true stories related in the magnificent book Champion Horses. I picked Ferdinand to win, not because I thought his odds were good (he was the long shot), but because I recognized his blood line. Ferdinand won. Years later, I still watch the Derby, even though I prefer eventing and show jumping. I like horse racing, though I view it with mixed emotions (why can't we Americans use turf, can we please stop the inbreeding), yet I still get a thrill watching the horse go down the stretch, even the annoying coverage that exists today can't ruin that.
It's not surprising, therefore, that I greatly enjoyed The Kentucky Derby by James C. Nicholson. After all, it's about horses and racing, written by someone who admits in the beginning that he enjoys racing. Yet to simply say this book is about racing would do both the book and the author a huge disservice.
The subtitle for this volume is "How the Run for the Roses Became America's Premier Sporting Event" and even this does the book a slight disservice. In relating the history of America's most famous race, Nicholson also relates how America could be seen in the race itself - not only in the horses and trainers that the public rooted for, but in how the Derby was marketed, who worked where, and who came to the race. It isn't really surprising, either, but I never really thought about before reading this book, that the Run for the Roses also ties into how Americans view racial issues. In fact, those sections of the book, and there are quite few, tend to be the most interesting, even more engrossing than the descriptions of the horse racing itself. The connection goes beyond the shift from African America jockeys to white jockeys (a thoughtful analysis) but also in terms of the Civil Rights movement, including a protest where people ran onto the race track. I didn't know about the connection of a Derby winner to Martin Luther King Jr, and Nicholson relates that story with a great amount of detail and pathos. This theme of horse race and racism runs though most of the book, for Nicholson connects it how Kentucky saw itself (and how other saw it) - a Union state that had slaves and that feels Southern. Though the horse race, Nicholson looks at racism in the country. It is a brilliant use of a micro chasm, especially when comparing how the white owners and African-American grooms saw the race.
This isn't to suggest that Nicholson focuses solely on race - he doesn't. There is plenty here for the lover of horse racing. While I found the discussion of betting a bit uninteresting, Nicholson does an excellent of job of describing the race and looking at the background of some of the prominent players. He does this to tie the race to the American mind. Smarty Jones, Funny Cide, Affirmed, Secretariat were all popular for different reasons. The defeat of foreign horses takes on a degree of -isms after September the 11th.
Nicholson also writes extremely well when relating how the race was marketed. He looks at the impact of radio and television. He discusses what changes caused War Admiral to be entered in the Derby when Man O'War (War Admiral's sire) wasn't.
The great thing about this book, though, is the fact that even when he comes close to sounding like a he's running off a list, Nicholson makes it interesting. Whether this is due to his passion for his subject (something that comes across) or because of his writing skill, I'm not sure. It most likely is a combination of the two. While there are many books about Derby, this is one that no one should miss. It is far more than biographies of the horses, trainers, and owners. It is more than a simple history of the race. Yet, it is accessible by the horse lover and the novice as well as the history student. This is a welcome addition to any library, and a must read for horse and history lovers.

One Hundred Years of Philosophy, Volume 36 (Studies in Philosophy & the History of Philosophy)From The Catholic University of America Pr

This collection originated in the centenary celebration of the School of Philosophy at The Catholic University of America. Written by acknowledged experts in their fields, the essays provide a unique overview of philosophical developments in the twentieth century. The broad range of topics considered makes the book an invaluable reference work.

The first set of essays deals with philosophy in the English-speaking world. Thomas R. Russman argues that British philosophy is best understood as reflecting a long-standing preoccupation with the refutation of idealism. William Wallace narrates the development of the philosophy of science. Peter Simpson provides an account of Anglo-American moral theory, and Robert George discusses Anglo-American legal philosophy.

The second set of essays deals with developments within the Catholic world. Frederick Crosson offers an overview of a century of Catholic social teaching, focusing on the central question of the relationship between the political and the moral in such figures as Maritain, Murray, and MacIntyre. Timothy Noone reflects on the course of medieval scholarship and philosophy in the twentieth century. Kenneth Schmitz contributes an authoritative overview of German Catholic thought in the last century. Richard Schenk introduces readers to one of the most significant German Catholic philosophers of the latter part of the twentieth century, Robert Spaemann, and his ethics. Also included is Spaemann's own analysis of the relationship between Christianity and modern philosophy.

A third set of essays concerns continental philosophy. Nicholas Lobkowicz debunks the idea that there was a powerful spell cast on German thought by Karl Marx, and shows instead that what passed for Marx's influence was really Left-Hegelianism. Robert Sokolowski provides a magisterial treatment of a different strain of German thought in his overview of phenomenology.

A final set of essays considers new areas of philosophical concern. Daniel Dahlstrom explores prominent developments in philosophy and art that have brought aesthetics to the center of philosophical inquiry. Eugene Long chronicles the burgeoning discipline of the philosophy of religion. In the concluding essay, A. S. Cua explores the ways in which western philosophy has influenced twentieth-century Chinese philosophy.

Brian J. Shanley is assistant professor of philosophy at The Catholic University of America and associate editor of The Thomist.

The Ethics of Organ TransplantationFrom The Catholic University of America Press

An ever-increasing demand for organs, with over 100,000 people on waiting lists, has driven a relentless search for new sources of organs. In 1995 the American Medical Association supported taking organs from anencephalic infants, children born without brains. In 1999 the Chinese government began removing organs from members of the politically outcast religious group Falun Gong, making a lucrative profit from sales to foreigners. Recently in Belgium physicians have euthanized a patient by removing her organs.

The search for fresh organs began much earlier, in 1968, when death was redefined, so that well-preserved organs could be removed from brain dead individuals. The early 1990s saw the introduction of donation after cardiac death, in which organs are taken from individuals whose hearts could still be resuscitated. Over the last two decades various countries have attempted markets in the sale of organs.

Each of these sources of organs raises ethical concerns. Is brain death truly death, or by taking the heart of the brain-dead individual do we thereby kill him? When a person's heart stops beating is it permissible to prepare his organs for transplantation, even though we could choose to resuscitate him? Can we take organs from an infant without a brain? If a woman no longer wishes to live, can she donate her organs to others in an act of beneficent suicide? Is a market in organs acceptable?

These questions and others are thoughtfully probed in this collection of essays, which features articles from theologians, philosophers, physicians, biomedical ethicists, and an attorney.

The Library of Early Christianity will be a permanent enterprise that publishes one new volume approximately every other year. The Library will publish texts in the original ancient languages of both East and West - Greek, Latin, Arabic, Syriac, Coptic, Ethiopic, Armenian, and Georgian - accompanied by contemporary English translations printed on the facing pages. In order to make the texts more accessible to the nonspecialist and to aid readers in comprehending the thought of the influential thinkers of the early church, each volume will include an introduction, notes, and a bibliography. Shortly before his death (ca. 460), as his health was failing, Theodoret decided to undertake a monumental project of exegesis.

An excellent tool for students and scholars
By Paul Stevenson
This handsomely printed volume begins with an introduction to the life and works of Theodoret, a Syrian bishop from the great metropolis of Antioch. (His cognomen "of Cyrus" comes from the fact that he was elected bishop of this latter city when he was about 30 years of age.) This introduction is followed by a separate introduction to the Greek text of the work and a bibliography of works on Theodoret and related authors and topics.

This book displays a critical edition of the Greek text on the left-hand page and an English translation on the right-hand page. The English translation of this volume, and the other one in the set, was done by the late Robert C. Hill. It is a very good literary translation, rather than a literal translation. This means that the translation conveys the meaning well, but that the reader will sometimes have to look carefully to determine the correspondences between the English and the Greek words. This format can be a great aid to students who have a basic knowledge of Greek but can get bogged down in the sometimes hard-to-follow word order.

The content of the book reminds me of modern study Bibles. There are questions that Theodoret evidently heard from ordinary churchgoers, followed by his answers, which often aim to clarify obscure or seemingly contradictory points. An example from early in the book might be in order:

Q: "If the earth was in existence, how did it come to be, since the historian says, 'The earth was in existence'?"

"The historian" is a reference to Moses. Theodoret showed little patience with this question, which was based on sloppy reading:

A: "This is a silly, foolish question. He who said, 'In the beginning God made heaven and earth,' did not say that the earth was eternal, but that it received its existence after, or along with, heaven. Furthermore, the historian did not simply say, 'The earth was in existence,' but connected it with what follows: 'The earth was invisible and formless.' That is, though made by the God of the universe, it was invisible, because still covered by the water, and formless, because not yet arrayed with growth or sprouting meadows, groves and crops."

The question and answer arise from the wording of the Septuagint (Greek) translation of the Old Testament, which was (and still is) the one universally used by the Greek-speaking Church. The people who were asking the question were pulling a phrase out of context, and Theodoret said they had to read it in the context of the rest of the sentence. It seems such a simple point, but people have continued to employ similarly silly approaches to Bible reading up to this very day. So the lessons of Theodoret continue to be quite useful to us.

This is the first of two volumes containing Theodoret's *The Questions on the Octateuch,* published by the Catholic University of America Press. The Press plans these to be the first volumes in a series called the Library of Early Christianity, which will continue to publish bilingual editions of early Christian authors who wrote in various languages, not just Greek.
