Irish Women Writers: An Uncharted Tradition, by Ann Owens Weekes

From the legendary poet Oisin to modernist masters like James Joyce, William Butler Yeats, and Samuel Beckett, Ireland's literary tradition has made its mark on the Western canon. Despite its proud tradition, the student who searches the shelves for works on Irish women's fiction is liabel to feel much as Virginia Woolf did when she searched the British Museum for work on women by women. Critic Nuala O'Faolain, when confronted with this disparity, suggested that "modern Irish literature is dominated by men so brilliant in their misanthropy . . . [that] the self-respect of Irish women is radically and paradoxically checkmated by respect for an Irish national achievement."

While Ann Owen Weekes does not argue with the first part of O'Faolain's assertion, she does with the second. In Irish Women Writers: An Uncharted Tradition, she suggests that it is the critics rather than the writers who have allowed themselves to be checkmated. Beginning with Maria Edgeworth's Castle Rackrent (1800) and ending with Jennifer Johnston's The Railway Station (1980), she surveys the best of the Ireland's female literature to show its artistic and historic significance and to demonstrate that it has its own themes and traditions related to, yet separate from, that of male Irish writers.

Weekes examines the work of writers like E.OE. Sumerville and Martin Ross (pen names for cousins Edith Somerville and Violet Martin), Elizabeth Bowen, Kate O'Brien, Mary Lavin, and Molly Keane, among others. She teases out the themes that recur in these writers' works, including the link between domestic and political violence and re-visioning of traditional stories, such as Julia O'Faolain's use of the Cuchulain and Diarmuid and Grainne myths to reveal the negation of women's autonomy. In doing so, she demonstrates that the literature of Anglo- and Gaelic-Irish women presents a unified tradition of subjects and techniques, a unity that might become an optimistic model not only for Irish literature but also for Irish people.

Madam Belle: Sex, Money, and Influence in a Southern Brothel (Topics In Kentucky History), by Maryjean Wall

Belle Brezing made a major career move when she stepped off the streets of Lexington, Kentucky, and into Jennie Hill's bawdy house―an upscale brothel run out of a former residence of Mary Todd Lincoln. At nineteen, Brezing was already infamous as a youth steeped in death, sex, drugs, and scandal. But it was in Miss Hill's "respectable" establishment that she began to acquire the skills, manners, and business contacts that allowed her to ascend to power and influence as an internationally known madam.

In this revealing book, Maryjean Wall offers a tantalizing true story of vice and power in the Gilded Age South, as told through the life and times of the notorious Miss Belle. After years on the streets and working for Hill, Belle Brezing borrowed enough money to set up her own establishment―her wealth and fame growing alongside the booming popularity of horse racing. Soon, her houses were known internationally, and powerful patrons from the industrial cities of the Northeast courted her in the lavish parlors of her gilt-and-mirror mansion.

Secrecy was a moral code in the sequestered demimonde of prostitution in Victorian America, so little has been written about the Southern madam credited with inspiring the character Belle Watling in Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind. Following Brezing from her birth amid the ruins of the Civil War to the height of her scarlet fame and beyond, Wall uses her story to explore a wider world of sex, business, politics, and power. The result is a scintillating tale that is as enthralling as any fiction.

Review
"Madam Belle contributes new information and historical context to one of America's most famous, or infamous, madams. Wall shows how changes in Lexington and the horse industry during Brezing's era allowed her to seize this business opportunity in a way that other madams were not able to do before or after her time."―Tom Eblen, Lexington Herald-Leader

"Wall's captivating study of Kentucky's most famous madam will take readers back to a lively time in Lexington's history. A biography of Belle Breezing was long overdue, and this is a good one."―Jamie Nicholson, author of The Kentucky Derby: How the Run for the Roses Became America's Premier Sporting Event and Never Say Die: A Kentucky Colt, the Epsom Derby, and the Rise of the Modern Thoroughbred Industry

"A well-told tale that adds context and perspective about the red-haired madam's place in the power structures of both Lexington and the horse industry."―Tom Eblen, Lexington Herald-Leader

"Maryjean Wall sheds new light on the tantalizing true story of vice and power in the Gilded Age South as told through Miss Belle's notorious life."―Alan W. Petrucelli, The Examiner

"Wall has achieved the almost impossible. This engaging biography comes as close to revealing the life of Belle as is possible."―Decatur Tribune

"[T]he fascinating true story of vice and power in the Gilded Age South."―Florida Weekly

"Belle Brezing is the ideal protagonist . . . . [A] captivating tale of whores and horses."―Wayne Curtis, Wall Street Journal

"Madam Belle: Sex, Money, and Influence in a Southern Brothel is a finely crafted, fast-paced, fascinating regional historical biography certain to have widespread appeal to both nonfiction and fiction readers."―The Midwest Book Review

"Madam Belle is a delightfully charming scholarly work of genius."―Southeastern Librarian

"Wall tells a story laced with sex, intrigue, and power to show the way public morality, urban growth, and economic expansion intersected in the Gilded Age South. [. . .] More than a simple biography, Wall provides an urban economic and political history of Lexington that explores elements of reform, economic growth, and business practices. Written in an accessible manner, this book is well worth the time of any reader interested in the history of prostitution, Kentucky, or the Gilded Age South."―Register of the Kentucky Historical Society

"[. . . ] What Wall does brilliantly is write a biography of Madam Belle by placing her life in context, piecing together a jigsaw puzzle of what is known specifically about Brezing with what is known about Lexington and her many acquaintances at the time. [. . .] Madam Belle is as much a biography of one of Lexington's most infamous residents as it is a history of Lexington, Kentucky."―Tennessee Libraries

"[Wall] weaves a fascinating story that combines urban history, women's history, political history, economic history, and the history of sports, all focused on Lexington, with side stories usually related to the people who came to the Lexington area because of the horses."―West Virginia History

"Maryjean Wall's book, Madam Belle, is full of amusing anecdotes and diverting digressions about the characters who inhabited the Lexington, Kentucky, underworld in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Ostensibly about the legendary madam Belle Brezing, Wall also offers a view into the world of Bluegrass horse culture, enlightening the reader about thoroughbreds, trotters, and the men who made their money on them. [. . . ] [T]here are many fun and fascinating threads here, and Madam Belle makes for entertaining reading."―Ohio Valley History

"[T]he character portrayals were excellent. We get a clear picture of Madam Belle's family life, of her daughter and some of the people around her, especially some of the more important men with whom she may have been involved."―Fallon Willoughby, Bowling Green Daily News

"Wall's research also offers an unexpected history of Bluegrass horse culture; horse racing defined Lexington, and the descriptions of the sport's history [. . .] provide a unique regionalism to the study.

[. . .] By intertwining the life of Belle Brezing with the changing landscape of the city of Lexington, Wall's book also offers significant insight into the moral shifts from the Victorian era to the Progressive era.

[. . . ] [A] new, vibrant addition to the history of gender, work, brothels, and Gilded Age life in a small city struggling to define itself."―Journal of Southern History

The best parts, we've read somewhere before. The rest? Yawn.
By Mae B. Leumas
I'll give it three stars in the event that it's a person's first-read book about Belle Brezing. It only deserves two stars when weighed against Buddy Thompson's earlier effort, without which it could not exist. The most interesting points of the book are the same ones that Thompson presented in 1983, and they are written with less charm and insight than he gave us at that time. The filler material, superfluous and seemingly endless information on horses, horse people, and business men of the day, seems to have been added to give the work more clout. Instead, it makes a tale already told, (by someone who seemed to care a lot more,) bog down like a ship with no sails on a breezeless afternoon.

A fast-paced, fascinating history of Lexington and fine biography.
By Kentucky Quacker
"Madam Belle: Sex, Money and Influence in a Southern Brothel" is a finely crafted, fast-paced, fascinating regional historical biography certain to have widespread appeal to both nonfiction and fiction readers. Author Maryjean Wall has meticulously researched the subject and used her insider’s knowledge of the business and colorful history of horse racing to insightfully capture the economic time and place that made Belle’s elegant establishment at 59 Megowan Street the gathering place for prominent, powerful and privileged gentlemen.

Belle Brezing (1860-1940) was a remarkable woman who came of age during post-Civil War Reconstruction and blossomed into a thriving entrepreneur and real estate investor during the Gilded Era. From the humblest beginnings as a fatherless, abandoned child, Belle had the motivation, drive and self-determination to seize the opportunities afforded her to amass wealth and notoriety as the madam of the most expensive and luxurious brothel in Lexington. Time magazine and newspapers throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky ran her obituary when she died at age 80. The doors of her vaunted house had been closed for business for over two decades but the memories and anecdotes lingered along with closely-held secrets. In a red-light district with over 150 houses of prostitution, Belle Brezling’s was the finest gentlemen’s club. Lexington’s most notorious madam left a legacy as being the likeliest inspiration for Margaret Mitchell’s fictitious Belle Watling.

Maryjean Wall did not embellish with fiction the documented facts of Belle Brezing who left neither diary nor memoir. The author has included a comprehensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources used. She carefully avoided the temptation romanticize or glamorize the truth about the sad, isolated and sometimes drug-addicted life of prostitutes during the gilded age including Madam Belle. The author’s previous book, also published by University of Kentucky Press is titled “How Kentucky Became Southern: A Tale of Outlaws, Horse Thieves, Gamblers and Breeders.” She has written an equally fascinating, must-read history of lesser explored aspects of society in “Madame Belle”.

The Differentiation of Authority: The Medieval Turn toward Existence, by James Greenaway

In this study, James Greenaway explores the philosophical continuity between contemporary Western society and the Middle Ages. Allowing for genuinely modern innovations, he makes the claim that the medieval search for order remains fundamentally unbroken in our search for order today. The new premium on the individual from the twelfth century onward suggests a constellation of problems that had existential, religious, and political dimensions; a constellation that is uniquely Western and which was no less problematic for the medieval soul than it is for the modern soul.

As the Middle Ages began, authority in society was held to have two forms: the political and the spiritual. Greenaway studies the emergence of a new, third notion of authority: the existential. He argues that the upheaval that ensued from a dynamic, but largely invisible, third authority within Christendom led to a crisis of meaning that affected all, but to which only the greatest minds of the time were sensitive.

The tortuous working out of a new order revealed a turn toward existence that inevitably restructured relations among the now three pillars of authority and gradually led to the denouement of the medieval world. The vast historical material presented is loosely circumscribed by the judicious use of Eric Voegelin's History of Political Ideas. Greenaway weighs the contributions of Joachim of Fiore, John of Salisbury, John of Paris, Marsilius of Padua, Dante, John Wycliffe, and Sir John Fortescue among others, and argues that the political work of William of Ockham and the mysticism of Nicholas of Cusa are crucial for understanding the transition from the medieval to the modern world. The study concludes by considering firstly the existential significance of citizenship in liberal democracy and secondly a contrasting, non-Western form of authority in Islam; both of which serve to highlight the achievement of the medieval differentiation of authority and the philosophical uniqueness of Western society.

James Greenaway is assistant professor of philosophy at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas.

Mind, Matter, and Nature: A Thomistic Proposal for the Philosophy of Mind, by James D. Madden

Introductory texts on the philosophy of mind tend to presume that we are forced into a dichotomy between some version of materialism and substance dualism. Hylomorphism―the idea that living material substances are not just matter, but compounds of matter and soul―is typically treated as a historical curiosity or as inherently obscure.

In Mind, Matter, and Nature, James D. Madden offers an alternative: an introduction to contemporary philosophy of mind on its own terms that concludes that the hylomorphic philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas offers the best approach. This book offers a fair-minded and detailed presentation of the most influential contemporary positions along with the arguments for and against them.

Written for students, Mind, Matter, and Nature presumes no prior philosophical training on the part of the reader. The book nevertheless holds the arguments discussed to rigorous standards and is conversant with recent literature, thus making it useful as well to more advanced students and professionals interested in a resource on Thomistic hylomorphism in the philosophy of mind.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

James D. Madden is associate professor of philosophy at Benedictine College.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"With great care and sophistication, Madden articulates an account of different iterations of theories of mind held and developed by the principal analytic philosophers in the twentieth century. His fair and learned work offers a broad sweep of issues from the general perspective of analytical Thomism."―Anthony J. Lisska, Maria Theresa Barney Professor of Philosophy, Denison University

"Using the best of the contemporary idiom, and dealing with the best of contemporary views, this book successfully presents aspects of the perennial philosophy. As a textbook or as a primer for a professional philosopher who wants to get a grip on why someone might be tempted towards hylomorphism, this is an outstanding work."―Patrick Toner, associate professor of philosophy, Wake Forest University

"Madden offers an introductory text in philosophy of mind that stands apart from most others on the market in its sustained attention to and defense of a Thomistic hylomorphism. . .Recommended." -Choice

Great introductory text to one of the most challenging topics
By A. Jaeger
James Madden's _Mind, Matter, and Nature: A Thomistic Proposal for the Philosophy of Mind_ proves to be an excellent undergraduate introductory text for the philosophy of mind as well as a substantial contribution that any professional contemporary philosopher of mind ought to engage with.

Madden clearly and concisely enters into the contemporary analytic philosophy of mind 'debate' by surveying what philosophers of mind presume to be the "live options" on the table. Throughout chapters two through six, Madden very thoroughly surveys the cases for and against: substance dualism, materialism (in its numerous forms), and emergentism. Madden finds all to fall short in various ways (although he does concede that some - viz. materialism - fall much harder than others). He then - quite convincingly - argues that these contemporary debates take as a starting point a certain supposition concerning the nature of material objects in general. Madden then proposes that this supposition (i.e., naturalism cum mechanism) about the material world need not be granted for general metaphysical reasons. If one denies this assumption (which he argues there are good independent reasons to do so), then one is able to provide an adequate alternative account of the philosophy of mind that is free from the errors discussed in chapters two through six. Madden's positive proposal is unabashedly Thomistic, and anyone interested in how the Thomistic account of human nature fits into the contemporary philosophy of mind debates will find Madden's book beyond helpful (not to mention just plain old fun to read). Those not bent towards the Thomistic tradition, nevertheless, will find this book helpful in explaining what the Thomistic tradition is (esp. the metaphysics of classical hylomorphism).

This book makes for a great general introductory text for undergraduates (whether of the Thomistic tradition or not). I have already used earlier drafts of this book in two of my general introduction to philosophy courses (with the permission of the author) at a large public school. The structure of the book makes teaching the material easy and straightforward (even if one is not a philosopher of mind by training). My students also found the book engaging and clearly written (despite the numerous complexities of the debates).
To my satisfaction, it also provoked a lot of discussion among students. Since Madden provides powerful arguments for and against the "mainstream views" of the mind (substance dualism and materialism) which most students hold in some form or another, each student will be challenged to thoroughly think through and grapple with his/her beliefs concerning the nature and relation between the mind and body.

Every college student should read this...
By M. Kilcawley
A great introduction to the Philosophy of Mind, even for the non-philosopher. This should be a must-read for any college student as it deals principally with the question, "What am I?"

Whether or not you agree with Madden's conclusions, you will find in this book an understandable yet thorough account of the best arguments for the leading contemporary positions, as well as the commitments they entail. A fair treatment of all positions including his own (Madden doesn't claim to have the last word on the matter by any means), this book could open the door to new considerations for the reader and make her challenge assumptions she may not even realize she holds.

Excellent Introduction to Various Philosophies
By Beth A Parks
An excellent introduction to various philosophies at the point where the rubber hits the road -- the human mind. This book is understandable. It assumes no familiarity with philosophical jargon. It avoids being pompous with bits of humor and appropriate humility about what is actually proven and, more often, not proven. It provides a balanced mixture of rigorous logic and appeals to common sense.

My son loaned us a copy and I read it to my wife while she did evening chores. It was very helpful towards our understanding of where we stand in the world. We had earlier read (and re-read) From Big Bang to Big Mystery. This book provided both reinforcement and foundation for Purcell’s book. I will certainly give Aristotle and Aquinas their due. But whenever I see nature in the light of hylomorphism, I will be thinking that it is a Madden, Madden, Madden, Madden world!

Review
"Scholarly editing engenders a sense of responsibility in the editor towards the work and its author, a desire to present the author's work in a full and helpful manner so that other readers may find her work as satisfying as one has oneself. Ruth Perry and Susan Carlile clearly take that responsibility to heart."―Susan Kubica Howard, ECF

"The latest entry in the series is a welcome addition."―Kritikon Litterarum

Proud beauty in distress
By Patto
Many of the fictional formulas of eighteenth-century fiction have their origin in the novels and plays of Charlotte Lennox. Samuel Johnson considered her "a great genius."

But she was testy, squabbling with friends and alienating the literary world with her feminist critique of Shakespeare. Fame she won, but fortune eluded her.

Being a remarkable woman herself, her writing is rich in formidable women characters, running the gamut from female tyrants of large fortune to penniless heroines of ironclad integrity. Henrietta is of the later variety.

The highborn, high-minded, strikingly lovely young Henrietta finds herself alone in London without friends, family or haven. She has just fled the home of her rich aunt to avoid a repulsive marriage (or worse). Her brother is out of reach traveling. Her guardian is away on business. She has barely enough money for cheap lodgings while she awaits the return of one of these male protectors - a dangerously vulnerable situation for a beauty.

While trying to support herself in London, Henrietta meets with all sorts of human folly and vanity - permitting Charlotte Lennox to exercise her great talent for satire.

Henrietta has a sharp wit and can hold her own in conversational sparring with predatory males, irrational employers, wily Jesuits and disagreeable nobles. She's so self-possessed that we fear she'll never fall in love. But don't despair. Read on to the delightful end.

HENRIETTA was published in 1758. Do read the introduction after you read the book. It gives a fascinating overview of Charlotte Lennox's life and discusses her influence on later authors, including Jane Austen.

After reading SOPHIA, EUPHEMIA and now HENRIETTA, I'm a big fan of Charlotte Lennox. She bridges the gap between Fielding and Austen with an originality all her own.

Origen: Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans Books 6-10 (Fathers of the Church)From Brand: Catholic University of America Press

This volume completes the first English translation of Rufinus' Latin version of Origen of Alexandria's "Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans" and contains Origen's detailed exegesis of Romans 6:12-16:27. Origen's much neglected commentary, which stands out in isolation at the fountainhead of Greek and Latin exegesis, is now completely accessible to English readers. In Books 6-10 Origen carries through to completion his programme, begun in Books 1-5, of defending human freedom and of opposing the natural predestinarian doctrine of the sects founded by the Gnostic heretics Marcion, Valentinus and Basilides. These schools relied heavily on texts from Paul, interpreted in isolation from the rest of Scripture, not only to deny free will but to support the doctrine that salvation is determined by the nature one receives at birth, whether good or evil. In contrast, Origen clarifies passages in Romans by citations from Paul's other letters, from the Gospels, and from the Old Testament. He attempts to construct a coherent and unified "biblical theology". Origen views human beings as chosen or rejected by God deservedly; everyone has it within his own power whether he becomes a servant of God or of sin, a vessel of wrath or of mercy. This book contains interesting and thought-provoking discussions of all the important theological themes and terms of Romans: faith, hope, love, works, justification, election, law, Israel, Gentiles, Church, sin, death, flesh, body and glory. The importance of these discussions is magnified by the fact that they stand alone in their detail and breadth and stem from the Church's most important theologian of the third century. Moreover, because Origen's work was productive in subsequent centuries in Rufinus' Latin translation, the commentary is of importance for the history of New Testament exegesis.

The first great exposition of Romans
By Seth Aaron Lowry
This volume completes Origen's study of the book of Romans and deals with Romans 6:12-16:27. One has to admire Origen's mind since this volume is filled with Scriptural references and Origen attempts to build a Scripture based interpretation of Romans by combining the thoughts of all the biblical authors. Throughout the work Origen is confronting the teachings of gnostic teachers Valentinius, Basilides, and Marcion who interpreted Paul in a predestinarian manner and denied free-will. Origen emphatically rejects this idea and passionately argues for the idea that mankind is endowed with a free will from God and has it within his power to obey or disobey. For everyone who is screaming that this sounds like Semi-pelagianism or Pelagianism, Origen always upholds the doctrines of grace and God's intervention, but always does so in harmony with free will. The gnostics on the other hand taught that man is saved in accordance with his nature, either a good or bad one, that these natures were received at birth, and that man could not change his nature since his destiny was fixed. Origen teaches that man can change his nature through cooperation with God's grace and God's aid.
One area where I did think this commenatary was weak was Origen's interpretation of Romans 9:15-19. Origen believes that these verses contain the words of an imaginary objector who is raising these objections towards Paul in an attempt to deny free will. Virtually all scholars today are agreed that this interpretation is incorrect since whenever Paul uses the phrase, may it not be, he always goes on to disprove an assertion stated in the verses above. This is really the only weakness I could find with Origen's scholarship. This commentary will be probably be extremely disliked by those of a Reformed persuasion since Origen argues for predestination based on foreknowledge and free will. Moreover, Calvinist's will find themselves agreeing with the positions of the gnostic heretics, and these are the same positions that Origen is attempting to refute. Individuals who are Catholic, Orthodox, or Weslyan/Arminian will enjoy reading this commentary since there is much common ground shared. If you are a student of the writings of the early Church or are simply just looking to understand the book of Romans from a different perspective, then by all means buy this commentary.

Origen's Coherent Exposition of Romans is Completed
By A Customer
This volume completes the first English translation of Origen's Commentary on Romans, the first patristic commentary on Romans. It contains Origen's detailed exegesis of Romans 6:12-16:27. Origen continues his consistent program of defending the Church against Gnostic or predestinarian interpretations of Paul. The schools founded by the heretics Marcion, Valentinus and Basilides are Origen's chief opponents. They had interpreted Paul in a way that denied human freedom and asserted the men are saved according to the nature he receives at birth, whether good or evil. In response to this Origen constructs a coherent and unified biblical theology. Origen stresses the role of God's free grace in salvation, and yet he views human beings as chosen or rejected by God deservedly, according to their merits. Everyone has free will, he says. That is, everyone has it within his own power whether he becomes a servant of God or of sin, a vessel of wrath or of mercy.
Origen's interpretation of Romans will no doubt infuriate Calvinists, who will dislike his interpretation of predestination based upon divine foreknowledge; and Lutherans who will be stunned by the dramatic contrast between Origen's interpretive categories and those of Luther. On the other hand the work will probably be well-received among Catholics, Orthodox, and Arminian/Wesleyan-oriented Protestants. The work contains extremely interesting discussions of all the important theological themes of Romans: faith, hope, love, sin, death, flesh, law, Israel, Gentiles, Church, body, glory, foreknowledge, predestination, etc. This commentary was productive in its Latin translation throughout the history of the church, in writers such as Pelagius, Augustine, Abelard, Aquinas, Erasmus, and the Council of Trent. This enhances the significance of its first appearance in English translation.

A Valuable Translation
By Quentin D. Stewart
This important work of Origen set the stage for later patristic discussions regarding freedom of the will (libero arbitrio) and Paul's concept of justification. Noteworthy is that Origen wrote some 170 years before the Pelagian controversy broke out. Both Augustine and Pelagius were familiar with Origen's work on these all important topics.

On the Incomprehensible Nature of God (Fathers of the Church Patristic Series), by St. John Chrysostom

Ten of the twelve homilies of St. John Chrysostom presented here were delivered at Antioch over a period of several years beginning in A.D. 386. The final two homilies were delivered in 398 after Chrysostom became patriarch of Constantinople.

All but one of the homilies aim at refuting the Anomoeans, heretics who revived the most radical tenets of Arius and blatantly claimed that man knows God in the very same way that God knows himself. Chrysostom's refutations and instructions to the faithful are based on the Scriptures rather than on human reasoning. He departed from this series of refutations only in the sixth homily, which he delivered on December 20, 386, again at Antioch. It consists of a panegyric of St. Philogonius, bishop of Antioch ca. A.D. 319-23, who before his episcopal ordination had led a very exemplary life, practiced law and contracted a marriage that was blessed with a daughter.

In addition to their theological content, these homilies contain many other points of interest. On one occasion, people applauded the speaker and were very attentive to the homily but then left the church so that when Christ is about to appear in the holy mysteries the church becomes empty (Hom III.32; Hom VII.2). During another homily, pickpockets plied their trade so that Chrysostom urged "let no one come into the church carrying money" (Hom IV.46). Chrysostom also indicates that people kept talking to one another at the sacred moment when Christ becomes present (Hom IV.36). He also mentions that chariot races often proved more enticing than going to church (Hom VII.1). Finally, valuable information on fourth-century Eastern liturgies is found in Hom III.41, 42, and Hom IV.32.

Harlan Miners Speak: Report on Terrorism in the Kentucky Coal Fields, by Members of the National Committee for the Defense

The Dreiser Committee, including writers Theodore Dreiser, John Dos Passos, and Sherwood Anderson, investigated the desperate situation of striking Kentucky miners in November 1931. When the Communist-led National Miners Union competed against the more conservative United Mine Workers of America for greater union membership, class resentment turned to warfare. Harlan Miners Speak, originally published in 1932, is an invaluable record that illustrates the living and working conditions of the miners during the 1930s. This edition of Harlan Miners Speak, with a new introduction by noted historian John C. Hennen, offers readers an in-depth look at a pivotal crisis in the complex history of this controversial form of energy production.

Homer Lea: American Soldier of Fortune (American Warrior Series), by Lawrence M. Kaplan Ph.D.

As a five-feet-three-inch hunchback who weighed about 100 pounds, Homer Lea (1876–1912), was an unlikely candidate for life on the battlefield, yet he became a world-renowned military hero. Homer Lea: American Soldier of Fortune paints a revealing portrait of a diminutive yet determined man who never earned his valor on the field of battle, but left an indelible mark on his times.

Lawrence M. Kaplan draws from extensive research to illuminate the life of a "man of mystery," while also yielding a clearer understanding of the early twentieth-century Chinese underground reform and revolutionary movements. Lea's career began in the inner circles of a powerful Chinese movement in San Francisco that led him to a generalship during the Boxer Rebellion. Fixated with commanding his own Chinese army, Lea's inflated aspirations were almost always dashed by reality. Although he never achieved the leadership role for which he strived, he became a trusted advisor to revolutionary leader Dr. Sun Yat-sen during the 1911 revolution that overthrew the Manchu Dynasty.

As an author, Lea garnered fame for two books on geopolitics: The Valor of Ignorance, which examined weaknesses in the American defenses and included dire warnings of an impending Japanese-American war, and The Day of the Saxon, which predicted the decline of the British Empire. More than a character study, Homer Lea provides insight into the establishment and execution of underground reform and revolutionary movements within U.S. immigrant communities and in southern China, as well as early twentieth-century geopolitical thought.

Review
"The story of Homer Lea's involvement and adventures with Chinese reformers and revolutionaries both in the United States and China in the early-twentieth-century could come directly from a modern novel of international intrigue." ―John T. Greenwood, editor of Normandy to Victory: The War Diary of General Courtney H. Hodges and the First U.S. Army"

"What we knew hitherto about the self-proclaimed 'General,' Homer Lea, was based on a jumble of often contradictory or problematic sources. Lawrence Kaplan cuts through the myths and offers a coherent and convincing analysis of Lea's actual connections with Chinese reformers and his role in the training of Chinese military cadets in the United States over a century ago. An intriguing tale."―Jonathan Spence, author of The Search for Modern China"

"An excellent biography of a largely forgotten extraordinary man. Despite ill health throughout his 35 years, Lea served briefly as a general in the Chinese Army and was Sun Yat Sen's military advisor. He became famous because of his book in 1909 about a future war with the United States that Japan would initiate with a surprise attack. Three years later, in another book, he predicted that Germany and Russia would be major threats to Britain and the United States. His fascinating life is well told in this biography."―Mac Coffman, author of The War to End All Wars"

"The five-foot-three-inch hunchback who only weighed 100 pounds and dropped out of Stanford College managed to convince high-ranking Chinese officials that he was not only a military expert but also the relative of the famous Confederate General Robert E. Lee. With his proclamation he found himself poised on the brink of immense change in the Chinese government."―Military Review"

"A full biography of a . . . western military dreamer with grand designs for China."―Diplomat & International Canada"

"An extraordinary contribution to the history of American-Chinese relations and the book belongs to libraries worldwide."―Center for Research of Geopolitics"

"This book is probably as thorough a recounting of Lea's life as there will ever be."―Journal of America's Military Past"

"His documentation is thorough, and he supplements the text with unique and supporting color plates from both family and personal collections."―Military Review"

"An interesting, sometimes, amusing read, Homer Lea is particularly valuable in reminding us that clandestine international political networks and military organizations are not new developments."―NYMAS"

"Now largely forgotten, Homer Lea, from the late 1890s until his death in 1912 at a few days short of age 36, played a significant role in China's access to the highest political circles on three continents and responsibility for recruiting and training some 2,000 young Chinese-American men to serve as officers for the cause."―New York Military Affairs Symposium Review"―

THE FILIBUSTER WHO WASN'T
By Tim Messer
This is an intriguing biography of a most unusual man. A 5'3" hunchback born with incurable Brights Disease, who overcame incredible hurdles to be acknowledged as a military visionary, by military experts. A truly flawed human being, consumed by ambition, prone to dishonesty when it served his purpose, ruthless is some things, yet brilliant, hard working, tenacious, physically demanding of himself, and truly dedicated. No more complex person ever existed.

My interest began when I was given his two most famous books by my father, The Valor of Ignorance, his most famous work, where Lea predicted the coming conflict with the Japanese that had insights, strategies and tactics that the Japanese actually used. And The Day of the Saxon, his Darwinist treatise on the survival of cultures and the degeneration of the society. His real life exploits seem to fall far short of the filibuster reputation he so desperately sought, and which he did much to dishonestly create with the public. It is more applicable to Fredrick Townsend Ward, an earlier successful American filibuster in China during the Taiping Rebellion.

His life was an enigma that prevents the author from completely fleshing out the subject. No fault of the author as most of the subjects papers were destroyed and unavailable. Some things were carefully reconstructed by the author and he does give a portrait of Lea that is sufficient enough to be both interesting, truly objective and, as far as can be ascertained, accurate.

A Stanford dropout, Chinese General and self taught military strategist, Lea was clearly brilliant and the some. His works inspired great admiration in military circles among the highest commanders, American, English, German and Japanese. Obviously with these bona fides, his military intellect is the one thing about Lea that is clearly provable. His admirers included Billy Mitchell, the Army Air Corps commander of WWI and predictor of Pearl Harbor.

The one true weakness of the work is it's shortcoming in fleshing out the era in which these events occurred. Although he does discuss the era, much of what would be useful is missing from this work. One interesting lapse in research was his attributing to Charles Gordon, the success of the Ever Victorious Army, where Gordon really followed what Fredrick Ward (read Devil Soldier) had built, even to adopting Ward's affectation of carrying a swagger stick into combat instead of a weapon. It would have made a fascinating comparison to look at Lea's attempt to train Chinese soldiers in modern warfare to the training conducted by Ward a half century earlier; the problems, adaptations, successes and failures.

The ability of Lea to succeed with people of power in an era of great prejudice and persecution of the "Yellow Peril" is on superficially addressed. Although he does discuss the Exclusionary Laws, he doesn't address the clear dichotomy created between the support he got and the attitude of the public toward Asians. It would have been greatly improved by using the methods of J. Anthony Lucas in his great historical work Big Trouble. A more detailed account of the era would have enriched this book and allowed the neophyte to better understand the era, implications and consequences.

As it is, this is an important work that finally puts together all the material available on Lea from disparate sources, some of which weren't available until the author sought and found undiscovered writings. For his efforts, the author is to be congratulated and praised, and I hope it will be the basis for a more thorough look later.

In the meantime, for those interested in the birth of modern China and one of the most unusual, brilliant and eccentric personalities affecting it's beginnings, and American attitudes, this biography is a good read and well worth the time. All works that follow must build on this excellent work and it will be footnoted in all subsequent works.
