Ancoratus (Fathers of the Church Patristic Series), by Epiphanius of Cyprus

Epiphanius of Cyprus was lead bishop of the island from 367 until his death in 403, and he was a contemporary of several of the great church fathers of the patristic era, including Athanasius, Basil, and Jerome. He is well known among modern scholars for his monumental heresiology, the Panarion, as well as for his involvement in several ecclesiastical and theological controversies. Before he began to write his magnum opus, however, he had already completed the Ancoratus, an important theological treatise, written in the form of a letter to Christians in southern Anatolia. The Ancoratus addressed numerous theological issues, particularly in response to the continuous disputes about the divinity of the Son, the developing arguments over the divinity of the Holy Spirit, and the early quarrels over the Incarnation of Christ. In addition, he included his thoughts on proper biblical exegesis, the problematic the- ology of Origen, and the relationship of the Christian faith with Hellenistic culture. Epiphanius's convictions on these issues represented important contributions to the ongoing theological and cultural controversies of the late fourth century, but he has often been overshadowed in modern scholarship by the work of his more illustrious contemporaries. Because there has been no complete English translation of the Ancoratus to date, this volume adds significantly to the resources available for patristic studies.

A Less Polemical Text from Epiphanius of Salamis
By Stefano Nikolaou
There has been a steady stream of Patristic translations over the last decade and the translation of the Ancoratus of Epiphanius of Salamis is a welcome addition. Epiphanius was the bishop of Salamis in Cyprus for 50 years and had the reputation as vigorous opponent of heresy. He is certainly not a major author but his extant works are interesting. His most renowned work is the Panarion which combats 80 Christian and pre-Christian heresies. The Ancoratus or 'Well-anchored Man' is Epiphanius' reply for local Christians for a summary of the faith. Apparently Epiphanius completed this work in 374 AD. Epiphanius was not an educated man as he was not educated in the higher levels of classical education but he has excellent knowledge of the Bible and writes in a clear koine that is easy to translate.

There is a theory that Epiphanius was a Jewish convert to Christianity but Kim does not even mention this at all in the introduction. I would have liked to find out more on this. Epiphanius was also a monk and a strong supporter of monasticism. As an Orthodox Christian I've always had a soft spot for Epiphanius. He was a passionate man who liked an argument. Modern people confuse his approach to that of a medieval inquisitor. This is far from the case. Epiphanius wanted to argue people into truth. He must have generated a lot of loyalty as he was soon venerated as a saint in Cyprus and the rest of the Orthodox world. Even the title of the present book has Saint as part of his title. Epiphanius is venerated on the 12 of May.

The introduction is soulless. It is written in flat, uninspired prose. I can tell that the translator (Young Richard Kim) probably took Epiphanius as a PhD topic because 'all the good ones were taken' so is stuck with his topic. He does a good job but where is the love? For that reason I deduct one star.

Letters of Peter Abelard, Beyond the Personal (Medieval Texts in Translation)From The Catholic University of America Press

The romantic tale of Peter Abelard and Heloise has been widely known for centuries. The legend relates in part to the letters exchanged between the two, years after Abelard had been castrated at the behest of Heloise's vindictive uncle, Fulbert.

These "personal" letters form the basis for bestselling compilations of works by Abelard and Heloise in translation, such as the recently revised Penguin The Letters of Abelard and Heloise or the new Hackett Abelard and Heloise, The Letters and Other Writings. They hold fascination for the light they shed on the relationship between the man and woman, as teacher and student, lovers, husband and wife, monk and nun, abbot and mother superior, and much more.

The popularity of the "personal" letters has generated considerable fanfare for the publication of another set of correspondence printed under the title The Lost Love Letters of Heloise and Abelard. The authorship of all these letters has been contested repeatedly, with the last-mentioned collection being the center of a present firestorm.

Generally ignored have been nearly a dozen other letters or letter-like texts, unassailably the work of Peter Abelard. Jan M. Ziolkowski's comprehensive and learned translation of these texts affords insight into Abelard's thinking over a much longer sweep of time and offers snapshots of the great twelfth-century philosopher and theologian in a variety of contexts. One group shows him engaging with Heloise and nuns of the Paraclete, another with Bernard of Clairvaux, and a third with four entirely different addressees on four entirely different topics. Broadening our panorama of the twelfth-century Renaissance, the picture presented by these texts complements, complicates, and enriches Abelard's autobiographical letter of consolation and his personal letters to Heloise.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Jan M. Ziolkowski is Arthur Kingsley Porter Professor of Medieval Latin at Harvard University and director of Dumbarton Oaks. His publications include thirteen books, nearly one hundred articles and essays, and more than fifty book reviews. The books encompass critical editions of Medieval Latin texts (such as The Cambridge Songs; Jezebel: A Norman Latin Poem of the Early Eleventh Century; and two of poetry by Nigel of Canterbury), as well as literary histories such as Alan of Lille's Grammar of Sex and Talking Animals: Medieval Latin Beast Poetry.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK

"No comparable book brings together this entire range of materials. Ziolkowski's book is an impressive addition to Abelardian scholarship and will be welcomed enthusiastically."―Peter Dronke, professor emeritus, University of Cambridge

"There is no volume like this one. Ziolkowski's collection makes a powerful supporting portfolio of fascinating Abelard materials for use by both students and scholars."―Paul Edward Dutton, Simon Fraser University

"The most important thing about this new collection of Abelard letters is that they are not the ones with which people are most familiar. Ziolkowski, a noted translator who is professor of medieval Latin at Harvard, has turned his skills to a group of twelve other "non-personal letters" or "letter-like texts" for this new volume. . . . This book will add additional details to the portrait of this extraordinary man. It provides a different perspective and range than the more common writings." - Magistra

"This helpful and appropriately revisionist collection will be warmly welcomed by scholars, teachers, and students. Ziolkowski's translation is elegant and readable while remaining faithful to Abelard's characteristic style. The letters themselves, spanning some twenty years of Abelard's career, provide important insights into the spiritual and intellectual context of northern France in the early-twelfth century. All are authentic. Together with t

Abject Loyalty: Nationalism and Monarchy in Ireland During the Reign of Queen Victoria, by James H. Murphy

Finalist, American Conference for Irish Studies James S. Donnelly, Sr., Prize for Books on History and Social Sciences

Abject Loyalty challenges the view that Irish nationalists were necessarily hostile to the British monarchy. During Queen Victoria's reign, royal visits to Ireland were in fact generally met with great enthusiasm. Indeed, the strength of the opposition of some Irish nationalists to the monarchy was a sign of the purchase that it seemed to have on the allegiance of many people within nationalist Ireland. By the 1880s, however, the monarchy had become the focus for British imperial identity in England and for the denial of constitutional legitimacy to those in Ireland who wished for home rule. It began to face increasing opposition in Ireland both because nationalist politicians feared its influence might reconcile Irish people to the Union with Britain and because enthusiasm for monarchy in Ireland was used to feed a British discourse which saw Ireland as a country that could be appeased by concessions short of home rule and which did not take nationalist demands seriously.

The book traces Ireland's interaction with the British monarchy from King George III to Queen Elizabeth II but focuses on the reign of Queen Victoria. It deals with its topic on two levels. It explores Queen Victoria's interaction with Ireland and her influence on British policy towards Ireland. And it examines how Queen Victoria and monarchy were perceived in Ireland.

Whereas Queen Victoria's views and actions have previously been subject to historical analysis, no previous study has seriously explored how she was perceived in Ireland or the subtleties of nationalism's attitude towards monarchy. Abject Loyalty makes a significant and original contribution to the political and cultural history of Ireland and will be of interest to those concerned with understanding the historical development of Irish identity.

Garson earned a total of seven Academy Award nominations for Best Actress, and fourteen of her films premiered at Radio City Music Hall, playing for a total of eighty-four weeks―a record never equaled by any other actress. She was a central figure in the golden age of the studios, working with legendary performers Clark Gable, Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor, Errol Flynn, Joan Crawford, Robert Mitchum, Debbie Reynolds, and Walter Pidgeon. Garson's experiences offer a fascinating glimpse at the studio system in the years when stars were closely linked to a particular studio and moguls such as L.B. Mayer broke or made careers. With the benefit of exclusive access to studio production files, personal letters and diaries, and the cooperation of her family, Troyan explores the triumphs and tragedies of her personal life, a story more colorful than any role she played on screen.

From Publishers Weekly
In a definitive biography, Troyan takes readers from Eileen Evelyn Greer Garson's birth in London in 1904 to her death in Dallas in 1996 as she held the hand of her good friend, the pianist Van Cliburn. Troyan's work is thorough and features many personal interviews with her family, friends and colleagues. Garson briefly worked in provincial companies and in London theater until a minor role in the film Goodbye, Mr. Chips led her to Hollywood in 1937. It was there, in 1942, that she played her defining role: Mrs. Miniver, an indomitable British wife and mother during WWII. The part won her an Academy Award, but, as Troyan explains, it also circumscribed her career, as studio officials cast her in carbon-copy roles. Even a move from MGM to Warner Bros. couldn't free her from typecasting. On the personal side, Troyan reveals that although Garson's first two marriages were dismal flops, her third, to Texas oil millionaire, rancher and philanthropist E.E. Fogelson, was supremely happy. Ending her film career in 1967, Garson did some television and stage work, but gradually confined her life to the Southwest, spending her last four years in a hospital. She expressed only one regret: "I wish I had been an actress rather than a movie star." Included in this strong biography are 48 b&w photos. Agent, Carol Schild.

From Kirkus Reviews
A sweet, contained view of Louis B. Mayer's favorite actress and Hollywood's icon of WWII fortitude. Garson had no children (``no life has everything,'' she commented, characteristically). Thus she eliminated the chance for nasty child tell-alls and left the mantle of remembrance to respectful outsiders. Troyan, a photo coordinator for Warner Bros. International Television Distribution, fits the bill, granting the warmth and distance due a subject who held afternoon teas on the set but also read the classics between takes. There's little ancient family history unearthed, except for observations on her seafaring ancestors, her erudite father (who died young), and her sickly early youth. After a triumph on the London stage, Eileen Evelyn Greer Garson was brought to Hollywood in 1937 by Louis B. Mayer as another of his foreign discoveries. For months she languished, until her tiny role as wife in Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939) made her a star. Soon thereafter followed Mrs. Miniver (1942). If this book does nothing else, it re-creates the sadly exquisite timing and great power of Miniver to galvanize US prowar sympathies and provide Garson with a lifelong symbol, the rose. By the time her film career ended in 1967, she had won seven Oscar nominations (and one win, for Miniver); had begun her extensive philanthropic efforts; and was deep in a happy third marriage to businessman Buddy Fogelson. Until her death in 1996, she retained her persona among fans as Queen of MGM, the fine lady with the orange hair. Public opinion changed little even after her 1940s divorce from Miniver co-star Richard Ney (who had played her son!). Expect no new revelations on film history or shocking discoveries about Garson's personal life; instead, veneration for a seemly star. Review
"(Troyan) successfully evokes the enormous drive, self-awareness and capacity for kindness of an actress who, inevitably, was more complex than her screen image indicated."―Dallas Morning News

"The author has done his homework in researching and writing this critical biography of legendary superstar Greer Garson. He presents Garson as a strong-willed, stubborn individual when with the studio moguls―she was not quite the elegant that she often played in pictures."―Gene Phillips

"MGM's great lady was a bit of an Irish cut-up, radiant, funny, brave, and smart. Michael Troyan knows that, and has written a most entertaining book about my friend, Greer."―Gregory Peck

"A sweet, contained view of Louis B. Mayer's favorite actress and Hollywood's icon of WWII fortitude."―Kirkus Reviews

"Amid the glowing tributes that Troyan offers in his diligent account of this most elegant of stars, one poignant headline that ran in many newspapers after her death read simply: Goodbye, Mrs. Miniver."―Movie Maker

"The biography is brilliant and author Troyan dares to delve in to aspects of her life that Garson might otherwise have wished to remain dormant. But in every case, Michael presents his findings in a fair and well-balanced manner, allowing readers to determine for themselves the true nature of a nurturing, nourishing, loving woman."―Palo Alto Daily News

"In a definitive biography, Troyan takes readers from Eileen Evelyn Greer Garson's birth in London in 1904 to her death in Dallas in 1996 as she held the hand of her good friend, the pianist Van Cliburn."―Publishers Weekly

"The rich, well-written and heavily researched book is a touching memoir revealing much about the actress who was 'Queen of MGM' and a top box office draw for most of the 1940s."―The Albuquerque Tribune

A Rose For Mrs Miniver - And Applause for Michael Troyan
By Stargazer
It's a tragedy that the work of this great actress seems to have been forgotten, the best example being that none of Miss Garson's
good films have found their way on to DVD. All of her films premiered to packed houses at NY's Radio City and quite a few broke box office records, including Mrs Miniver,Blossoms In the Dust,Madame Curie,Random Harvest, and Goodbye Mr Chips. I learnt many things about Greer Garson that I hadn't known, for example, she was born in London in 1904,not Ireland in 1908 as her publicist would have us believe. She made a name for herself on the London stage, before going to Hollywood, and despite an amicable relationship with Louis B Mayer, was freqently fustrated by his refusal to allow her to perform a range of roles, instead putting her in period dramas - hence her nickname of the Actress with the Bustle. She married three times (not two as is most commonly written) the first time disastrously to a British officer stationed in India, the second to Mrs Miniver co star Richard Ney (a union that didn't survive WW11) and finally when in her forties, to Col Buddy Fogelson, a marriage that lasted until his death many years later. A Rose for Mrs Miniver is a credit to author Michael Troyan, well written and well researched. Thanks to him we come to know this warm vivacious woman who lived her life with flare and class, - and who wasn't afraid to take risks - pretty well. I particularly enjoyed the recounting of Greer's refusal to be [pulled] in by Joan Crawford's jealousy and rudeness, and of her close life long friendship with regular co star Walter Pidgeon.
A wonderful book, thoroughly recommended.

Brilliant and moving biography of a Hollywood legend.
By Joseph Dispenza
The author has captured all the grace, charm, and generosity of spirit of one of Hollywood's most endearing legends. As one who knew Miss Garson late in life, it was a pleasure to see her so beautifully rendered; it was also a revelation to learn about areas of her life I had not known. This is not only the difinitive biography of Greer Garson, but a model for all biographies of film personalities. The author is a born storyteller. He has a great future ahead of him in writing...one hopes there will be more books like this one. He is to be congratulated on a labor of love so sensitively brought to life. Thank you for giving the world Miss Garson's final legacy: the lesson of a life lived fully, compassionately, and well.

This is a well written biography. I've never been a big fan of Greer Garson, but I'll watch her movies with a new appreciation now that I know her background.

Jewish Resistance Against the Nazis, by Patrick Henry

This volume puts to rest the myth that the Jews went passively to the slaughter like sheep. Indeed Jews resisted in every Nazi-occupied country―in the forests, the ghettos, and the concentration camps. The essays presented here consider Jewish resistance to be resistance by Jewish persons in specifically Jewish groups, or by Jewish persons working within non-Jewish organizations. Resistance could be armed revolt; flight; the rescue of targeted individuals by concealment in non- Jewish homes, farms, and institutions; or by the smuggling of Jews into countries where Jews were not objects of Nazi persecution. Other forms of resistance include every act that Jewish people carried out to fight against the dehumanizing agenda of the Nazis―acts such as smuggling food, clothing, and medicine into the ghettos, putting on plays, reading poetry, organizing orchestras and art exhibits, forming schools, leaving diaries, and praying. These attempts to remain physically, intellectually, culturally, morally, and theologically alive constituted resistance to Nazi oppression, which was designed to demolish individuals, destroy their soul, and obliterate their desire to live. The contributors are among the most renowned Holocaust authorities in Israel, Europe, Canada, and the United States. The essays treat Jewish resistance in France, Belgium, Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, the Yishuv, Germany, Austria, Croatia, Poland, Romania, the Ukraine, Belarus, Slovakia, and Hungary. Some essays describe children's resistance and music as resistance. The authors explain why different types of resistance occurred in some places but not in others and how factors such as terrain played a vital role in why one type of resistance took place in some areas but was impossible elsewhere. The importance of chronology and the progress of the war are also considered. This comprehensive handbook will serve as an indispensable guide for Holocaust scholars and general readers.

A definitive riposte to the myth of Jewish passivity in the Holocaust
By monty
This book, edited by Patrick Henry and collecting the essays of leading scholars of the Holocaust, is surely the definitive volume on Jewish resistance to the Nazis. Encompassing all the countries occupied by the Nazis, and considering all forms of resistance, Dr. Henry and his collaborators effectively demolish the canard that Jews went like lambs to the slaughter. Not only are the individual essays authoritative, but they are also highly readable and often deeply moving. This book is both a history and a memorial.

Demolishing A Myth
By Elliott Abramson
This book is a potent thrust against one of the most long-lived myths about the Holocaust---that Jews went passively to the slaughter. The demolition job begins in earnest with an extensive and penetrating introduction by the erudite editor, Patrick, Henry. And the individual essays comprising the bulk of this stimulating volume solidly prove that many Jews heroically resisted , under grotesque pressures, in many places. Ultimately inspiring reading.

In the past resistance was narrowly defined and usually implying armed resistance like the one in Sobibor or Ghetto Warsaw
By EG
Historians who have widely written about the Holocaust can learn a lot from this book about the courageous fight Jews displayed during WWII. What has changed that historiography has a different perspective on the subject of defiance? Are there new findings that were recently uncovered? The answer is no! In the past resistance was narrowly defined and usually implying armed resistance like the one in Sobibor or Ghetto Warsaw. This definition had a narrow scope and included a small number of Jews, those who were not included in this group were considered as "sheep going to slaughter." The historian Martin Gilbert and to some extent also Yehuda Bauer suggested that just to survive and fight for ones life was an act of defiance against the Nazis and against their allies. Consequently, when historians accepted the new definition of resistance those Jews who survived and even Jews who perished were no longer viewed as sheep. The wealth of stories and images unearthed by those who contributed to the book is amazing. Holocaust survivors left a legacy for future generations which can be summed up that life is worth fighting for.

We Only Know Men: The Rescue of Jews in France During the Holocaust, by Patrick Henry

Patrick Henry, working with more than one thousand unpublished autobiographical pages written by key rescuers and with documents, letters, and interviews never before available, reconsiders the Holocaust rescue of Jews on the plateau of Vivarais-Lignon between the years 1939 and 1944. Henry carefully examines the general research of the last quarter century on rescue in that area of France, illuminating in detail the strengths and weaknesses of Philip Hallie's groundbreaking study "Lest Innocent Blood Be Shed" (1979) as they appear sixty years after the end of World War II. In highlighting the involvement of Catholics, Protestants, and Jews in the rescue mission, the book looks closely at the lives and work of two rescuers on the plateau: a young Protestant man, Daniel Trocme, and a Jewish mother of three, Madeleine Dreyfus, both of whom were arrested and deported. Daniel died in the gas chamber at Maidanek; Madeleine survived Bergen-Belsen. Madeleine provides an example of a Jewish rescuer of Jews and raises the issues of so-called Jewish passivity during the Holocaust. Also analyzed is Albert Camus' chronicle, "La Peste", written in large part during the fifteen months he spent in a hamlet just outside the village of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon from August 1942 until late 1943. As an allegorical mirror, the text reflects both the violent and non-violent resistance taking place when and where Camus composed his narrative. Finally, Henry brings together his own findings and those of others who have studied the rescuers throughout Europe in order to understand rescuer motivation and to show incontrovertibly why it is important not only to know about the victims and perpetrators of the Nazi genocide but to study and teach more widely about the rescuers of Jews during the Holocaust.

Review
"[Henry] offers a fascinating work on the multidimensional facets of rescuers of Jews in France during the Holocaust, particularly those centered in and around Le Chambon-sur-Lignon. . . . [T]his volume is the result of the author's original research involving hitherto inaccessible documents, letters, and interviews, and unpublished autobiographical notes by some key rescuers themselves. Excellent index and bibliography. Summing up: Highly recommended."―Choice

From the Back Cover

"Can one praise the rare and remarkable rescuers of Jews under the Nazi occupation without diminishing or deflecting attention from the enormous evil of the Holocaust? Patrick Henry argues passionately that we can and must. Building on his own research as well as that of others, he tells us of some of the extraordinary ordinary men and women on the plateau Vivarais-Lignon who risked their lives and the lives of their families to shelter thousands of Jews and help save them from deportation and death. In this splendid book, Henry offers a moving testament to their memory and, in a fascinating analysis, suggests that Albert Camus's writing of The Plague may have been informed by his awareness of the rescue and resistance that surrounded him while he lived on the plateau during this period."--John J. Compton, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, Vanderbilt University

"We Only Know Men is a wonderful book: thoughtful, sensitive, engaging, and beautifully written. Henry provides readers with the context, content, and controversies about rescue during the Holocaust. It is a `must read' for scholars, teachers, clergy, and students who ponder what it was that motivated and enabled ordinary people to risk their lives."--Carol Rittner, RSM, Distinguished Professor of Holocaust & Genocide Studies, The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey

"Henry writes clearly and forcefully in this important new book. In just about every chapter, one can sense a strong personal commitment to recognize the courageous, altruistic activity of the rescuers and to inspire others to prevent recurrence of genocidal evil in the present and future."--Susan Rubin Suleiman, author of Crises of Memory and the Second World War, Dillon Professor of the Civilization of France and Professor of Comparative Literature, Harvard University

"A thoroughly researched page-turner. Henry's tapestry of human stories and theoretical questions helps us understand the recurrent human instinct to protect the oppressed and the helpless first, and figure out why later. Anyone interested in understanding the place of non-violence in a violent world would do well to read Henry's book first."--Richard Unsworth, Senior Fellow, Kahn Liberal Arts Institute, Smith College

A spotlight on nobility at a time of horror
By Henry Aubin
This account of dogged altruism at a time of widespread moral collapse -- the Nazi occupation of France -- is nothing if not uplifting. The author highlights Gentiles and Jews (notably a young Protestant teacher of Jewish youths, Daniel Trocmé, and a Jewish mother who escorted many imperiled children to safety, Madeleine Dreyfus)to exemplify selfless devotion to conscience. Both were part of the effort by Christian peasants and townspeople in the region near Le Chambon-sur-Lignon to harbor and save thousands of Jews and other would-be victims of persecution. The author describes many other heroes as he challenges the idea of "Jewish passivity" during the Holocaust. The research is scholarly and impressive, the writing superbly limpid. It is a book to bolster anyone's shaky faith in humanity. It also builds respect for the power of non-violence at a time of grotesque brutality.... As a surprise bonus for students of literature, the book also contains new information on Albert Camus, who happened to live near Le Chambon-sur-Lignon while writing The Plague. the book reveals how the refuge operation richly influenced the novel's allegory.

In Search of Schopenhauer's Cat: Arthur Schopenhauer's Quantum-Mystical Theory of Justice, by Raymond B. Marcin

Arthur Schopenhauer's theory of justice is radical. Justice, in Schopenhauer's system of thought, is not an epistemological construct. It is neither rights based nor process based. It rejects the concept of individual moral duty as vehemently as it embraces the concept of collective moral guilt. For Schopenhauer, justice is not a way of assessing reality. It is a facet of reality itself. Schopenhauer's theory of justice is ontology―a study of being itself.

In this book Raymond B. Marcin offers several reasons why a review and a reevaluation of Schopenhauer's theory of justice are worthwhile now, almost two hundred years after it was first formulated. One is that his theory of justice, based squarely on his philosophy of being (or ontology), seems remarkably consistent with the view of reality that is taking shape in the minds of contemporary quantum physicists. Albert Einstein called Schopenhauer's writings "wonderful," and Erwin Schrödinger called them "beautiful." Another reason is that the metaphysical basis of Schopenhauer's theory of justice bridges a gap that has long existed between Western and Eastern approaches to philosophy and may well have had an influence on the thought of Mohandas K. Gandhi. Yet another reason is that some contemporary jurisprudential movements with a strong social orientation have of late taken an interest in the concept of "community." The idea of "comm-unity" in its most basic and most literal sense is at the heart of Schopenhauer's deep ontology of justice. Finally, the concept of justice has almost always been examined from an epistemological vantage point. Seldom have we seen, outside the natural law tradition, a metaphysical or ontological examination of justice, and that is exactly what Schopenhauer gives.

Readers will learn of Schopenhauer's thought, life, and importance in the history of philosophy. A multi-disciplinary approach combined with the author's inviting style will make this book worth the consideration of a broad range of scholars.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK

"Raymond Marcin's range of topics and his ability to draw affinities between Schopenhauer's thought and physics, religion, legal theory, religious traditions, and mystical traditions are breathtaking. . . . A very exciting work of a mature scholar."―David E. Cartwright, University of Wisconsin―Whitewater

"This richly informed and novel approach to a difficult thinker ably demonstrates the uncommon and unexpected virtues of reading Schopenhauer's metaphysical and mystical contentions in connection with both contemporary physical theory and jurisprudence. Marcin challenges us to reconsider the ethical and political implications of Schopenhauer's grounding of justice in his metaphysics, given the considerable affinities of the latter with aspects of quantum physics."―Daniel O. Dahlstrom, Boston University

"This is a fine work. . . . Marcin leads the reader through a rich cornucopia of Schopenhauerian and Schopenhauerian-related themes. We learn of Schopenhauer's life, his thought, his significance in the history of philosophy, and, of far greater importance, his relevance to a number of contemporary scientific, legal, ethical, and political concerns."―G. Steven Neeley, Esq., Saint Francis University

"Marcin writes with a clarity that rivals Schopenhauer's own lucid style. He succeeds in discovering an illuminating perspective on Schopenhauer's concept of the will, approaching this vexed subject with insights inspired by contemporary controversies in physics. Were Schopenhauer to write a supplement to On the Will in Nature today, he could not do better than to use the line of argumentation so elegantly laid out in this book."―Dale E. Snow, Loyola College in Maryland

Review
"The central topic of this wide-ranging and thought-provoking book is Schopenhauer's theory of justice, with special attention given to its grounding in his metaphysics and theory of human nature. Explores Schopenhauer's thought by drawing out its affinities to an array of ideas from quantum mechanics, theistic natural law theory, Eastern and Western religion, and the entire history of metaphysics, ethics, and political philosophy . . . It will engage readers at many levels." ―Choice

Hard to put down
By Henry Cohen
This short book is hard to put down. It provides an excellent introduction to Schopenhauer's thought, focusing on the fact that he viewed the universe -- the reality that lies behind appearances -- as one. Marcin shows how Schopenhauer's view coincides with that of quantum physics, Eastern religion, and Christian mysticism. Schopenhauer's theory of justice derives from the fact that reality is one. You and I are one, so, if I do wrong to you, then I do wrong to myself. Schopenhauer's theory of justice, therefore, calls for compassion, not for individual rights, as, in reality, there are no individuals.

Thomas Aquinas' Trinitarian Theology: A Study in Theological Method, by Timothy L. Smith

Thomas Aquinas' work on the Trinity in his Summa Theologiae has for the past century been seen, along with Augustine's De Trinitate, as representative of a Latin Trinitarian tradition. This tradition is assumed to begin with the one God, the one divine essence as a whole. Only afterwards does it see God as three in Persons. Philosophical concerns--rather than the revelation of God in Christ--are assumed to be the basis for the discussion. According to many modern theologians the immanent life of God in this tradition is thereby separated from the rest of Christian faith and, consequently, has no relevance for the believer.

This book examines Thomas' Trinitarian theology in light of this criticism. Thomas' account of the Trinity of Persons and the coherence of language about those Persons is not a rational demonstration but an expression of faith seeking understanding. The crucial foundation for this doctrine is Thomas' theory of divine naming. The later chapters examine possible influences upon Thomas including the work of earlier theologians, the speculative grammarians contemporary with him and his own teacher, Albert. Timothy Smith concludes that although Thomas is best understood when read in light of his own intellectual context, one cannot assume that every influence is positive.

Thomas' presentation of Trinitarian doctrine in his Summa Theologiae is an essential text for anyone interested in the great Dominican's theology. One finds here the meeting of a host of philosophical and theological issues. And in the prism of this particular text, the reader will gain a better understanding of the complexity and beauty of scholastic theological method.

Timothy L. Smith is a tutor at Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, California, and a former post-doctoral fellow and instructor at The University of Notre Dame. Smith is the author of a series of articles on Aquinas' theological method and sources and is the editor of Faith and Reason and Aquinas' Sources, both published by St. Augustine's Press.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"[A] model work in historical theology and philosophy, simultaneously showing a deep understanding of Thomas's medieval context and a sensitivity to contemporary theological issues.... This enjoyable and enlightening book is written with a clarity most admirable in a study of very difficult parts of Thomas's thought that are central to our understanding of both his theology and his philosophy. It should be read by anyone interested in Aquinas or Trinitarian doctrine, whether within a medieval or a contemporary context." -- Alexander R. Pruss, Speculum

"It contains a great amount of information. It does make some important points on Aquinas' method." Lucien J. Richard, OMI, Catholic Library World

"Timothy Smith's study is very useful for definitively dismissing certain criticisms leveled against St. Thomas's theology, in particular the charge that sees in Aquinas a rationalist attempt to demonstrate the Trinity. The attention paid to methodology and analogy in also key: Smith is to be commended for clearly calling this to mind."--Gilles Emery, The Thomist

"Smith's careful investigation of Thomas's method, sources, and use of theological language guides the reader into a fresh appreciation of the nuances of Aquinas's work, free of imposed and distorting presuppositions. As such, it is a valuable contribution both to historical investigation of Thomas Aquinas, and to contemporary discussions of the doctrine of God and theological disclosure."--Wanda Zemler-Cizewski, Anglican Theological Review

"A good overview of Aquinas' epistemology in the light of the Trinity."-Hans Geybels,

A Triple A guide around Bourbon Country

Enjoyed the glossy photos and illustrations in this book although the historical approach is limited when I compared it with the rest of my bourbon books. A basic kind of tourist guide, info that could be found by your hotel bed before you depart on your distillery tour.

By Graybeard48
Informative, witty and interesting. A good book for bourbon drinkers to enjoy while imbibing and the perfect book for planning your trip to bourbon country (or inticing you to visit). Interesting facts about bourbon as well as the countryside. Suggestions on where to eat and stay and what and how to to visit in the area (we have signed up for one of the suggested distillery tours). It really IS the essential travel guide to bourbon country. Well done! Looking forward to our trip to Louisville and beyond.

Not All Inclusive, But Worth It
By Spoon
I had ordered this book awhile back in order to have it in time for my trip to Kentucky the beginning of October 2013, but the publishing date was moved back and I didn't get it in time for the trip. Bummer.

We had planned out our long weekend trip with friends to include 4 or 5 distilleries, and the trip was a success. The Willet and Woodford distilleries are good examples of the industry and not to be missed. The two smaller places we hit, Barrel House and Old Pogue, aren't mentioned in this book but are listed on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail map online. Since there are only fourteen distilleries in the state right now, I was surprised to not see them there (although small craft maker Barrel House, while making and aging bourbon, hasn't sold any yet as it's still waiting for their 6 year aging to complete).

The book itself is well made, uses heavy weight glossy paper, and has a nice binding and cover. It's a 6 x 9 inch format, a good size for bringing with you to Kentucky. As a "travel guide" one would expect a lot of pictures, and this book does not disappoint. The hundreds of photos give a good idea of what each distillery is like and includes many pictures of the surrounding areas also. The trip to Woodford Reserve through bluegrass horse country is especially nice, and the pictures here do it justice.

The authors provide a nice history of each distillery, a list of each of the spirits made there, the hours for tours and gift shops, and a general history of bourbon making and the urban legends associated with the early days. The specifics of each bourbon, from ingredients to mash to bottle, are provided unless the process is proprietary. In addition, each distillery region write-up includes a list of recommended hotels and eateries in the area, good to use as a starting point for your travel planning.

Several mutli-page side bar pieces discuss the two cooperages (barrel makers) in the state and other bourbon associated items. A final section includes definitions and lingo about the bourbon-making process, and will help you understand some of the distillery guides as you tour the region.

There are certainly other books on Kentucky bourbon country, and Kentucky has several excellent web sites on the bourbon trail which we had used to plan our trip, but this book will get you all worked up about heading out to sample Kentucky's best, is a very nice start to any trip there, and a nice conversation starter once you get home. Next trip: the annual Bardstown bourbon festival in September and a visit to the soon-to-open Michters distillery in Louisville.
