Respecting the mind of God

Dominant liberal sentiment concerning the unending crisis in the Catholic Church usually involves the imaging of a heroic flock of dissident Catholics bravely questioning their authoritarian church, often defending themselves as acting out the admonishment of Vatican II to recognize the "spirit of the times." The effect amongst many Western Catholic intellectuals has been to exercise a nebulous acquiescence to the prevailing ethos of the well educated, even when the well educated seek active participation in the sex revolution, seemingly oblivious to its self-destructive character. It is no secret that the focal point of Catholic dissidence has been towards Humanae Vitae.
Janet E Smith is a Catholic philosopher with an essential premise. Living with a respect for God would seem to imply a willingness to seek an understanding of and conformity to the will of God, particularly, as she explores in this book, on the matter of contraception. If this is not what we seek, then our questioning may be the sort designed to avoid rather than find answers.
The very attempt to develop this purified sense of the will of God is viewed as upsetting to a great many contemporary Catholics, embarrassed by their faith and angry at those resistant to popular trends. So intense is this anger, that on occasions of her public lectures on the subject of contraception, even on Catholic university campuses, Ms. Smith has been greeted with rude, at times vitriolic, interruptions to her speeches, situations she has always met with unflappable grace and dignity. Because she is always seeking a faithful receptivity towards the mind of God as a first principle, she refuses to be unkind in return.
Honest philosophers have always sought to know what is natural and implicit in God's design. Ms. Smith is committed to making a case for what ought to be obvious to people of authentic faith: that the human design, particularly that of women, is not arbitrary or accidental, and not in need of repair or reinvention. It is complete in every detail the image and likeness of God. Contraception is not consistent with our inherent design as women and men living with a respect for God, and Ms. Smith bravely invites us to consider this. Perhaps then we can be freed from being angry towards our own best interests

the answers about the said topics. We are living in a world of confusion regarding the moral life, but we
do not hear all sides of the solutions. This is a remarkable book inwhich to bring us the truth.

A critique of revisionist theology

This is an excellent book for the intellectual Christian who wishes to understand the relationship between hedonism and artificial contraception.

All intellectuals would be well advised to read it on the grounds that clearly dilineates the philosophical points of view of modern moral philosophy with particular emphasis on sexuallity.

The early chapters are easy to read and are worth the admission price. The middle chapters on philisophical matters will interest trained philosophers and highly educated intellectuals. Even so they are difficult to follow and require digestion over a period of time.

The most important chapter follows the arguments put forward by the (originally dissident theologians) 'revisionist 'theologians.

It appears to me that the entire thesis of the work rests here. That being: the dissident theologians proposed a utilitarian philosophy of 'proposionalism' to justify artificial contraception, later often called 'consequentialism'.

The problems with this theory were endemic ( an integral part of the theory) in that it would require a super computer and several Ph.D.'s to be able to compute the consequences of ones act. Not the sort of moral code that the typical person could easily use.

At the same time the claim was made that the individual would be able to dissent from Magisterial teaching by putting their faith in the theologians assertion that the consquences of artificial contraception might contain a premoral evil but would not be evil in and of themselves.

The traditional teaching on the other hand held that artificial contraception was intrisincally evil because it interfers with the couple's relation with God, and in particular, their ability to procreate (as compared to reproduce). Procreation involes the creation of an immortal soul which only God can do. God relies on the work of the faithful to accomplish this most joyous work.

In addition, the Christian by virtue of baptism is called to obedience in Christ. For the Catholic this means a special deference to the Magisterium. A Catholic can not simply reject the teaching of the church unless by conscience that person is convinced that following that teaching would be evil.

This point has never really been taken up in the dialogue.

This volume makes available for the first time in English the major biblical commentary by one of the leading exponents of Antiochene exegesis, Theodoret, bishop of Cyrus. Though originally intended as an opening to his exegetical work―in the manner of his predecessors in this school, Theodore of Mopsuestia and John Chrysostom―Theodoret's Psalms commentary comes from his later ministry in the decade before the Council of Chalcedon, which he was instrumental in convening. It thus documents current christological and trinitarian concerns and illustrates an Antiochene hermeneutic that rests firmly on the literal sense of the "inspired composition of the mighty David."

Though commentators less well acquainted with this lengthy work have been ready to dismiss Theodoret as lacking originality, a sounder assessment would acknowledge his willingness to take account of previous work, from both Alexandria and Antioch, and steer a middle course. He deliberately avoids the excesses of allegorical interpretation of Origen, on the one hand, and of the historicism found in Diodore and Theodore, on the other. Moderation and flexibility are the hallmarks of his own approach to the Psalms, to which he comes not as scholar or preacher but as teacher and pastor. He aims simply to offer his readers "some benefit in concentrated form."

This translation respects the conciseness which the bishop sets as one aim for himself, his other principle being to let the text speak for itself. Theodoret emerges in this work as a measured commentator and balanced exponent of his school's hermeneutical and theological principles.

Li spent seven years collecting the oral histories of 90 Vietnam War veterans, from combat soldiers to doctors, nurses, and spies. The battlefield experiences of Americans are sobering, but accounts from South and North Vietnamese stand out for their assessments of why the U.S. lost the war and the challenges of guerrilla warfare, respectively. But Li's achievement is most remarkable for the window he opens onto the lives of Chinese and Russian veterans; their rare accounts appear here for the first time in English. Although American policymakers feared that the Soviets and the Chinese were working in concert, both countries competed for the loyalty of the North Vietnamese, offering men and material from the beginning. This volume of interviews with Vietnam War veterans adds new and surprising dimensions to our understanding of the scope of the war. Americans are, of course, well represented, including grunts, logistical-support troops, and nurses. But this was a war not only fought in Asia but fought largely by Asians. We have a retired North Vietnamese general who will never again see his son, now a U.S. citizen; a South Vietnamese officer now living a penurious existence in Ho Chi Minh City; a South Korean doctor; and Chinese who fought in the jungle or labored like Hercules to keep North Vietnamese railroads running. To round out the war, we even have comments from anonymous Russian officers, who built antiaircraft-missile sites and (more discreetly) spied in Hanoi. Some interesting accounts marred by stiff writing

I picked up by Voices from the Vietnam War by Dr. Xiaobing Li in order to read some of the more obscure accounts of those who served in Vietnam, especially the Chinese and Soviet accounts. The introduction of the book provides some good historical context. I also like how Dr. Li does not pass judgement on any the veteran's despite several shocking admissions.

That being said, the book suffers from several flaws. First, the veteran's accounts are made less interesting by the historical contextual passage at the beginning of each chapter. While the accounts certainly need historical context, these passages written by Dr. Li give away the entire arc of the veteran's account and even some of the most interesting details, making it almost unnecessary to read the veteran's own words in some cases.

Second, the book's stiff writing can make some of the sections a bit boring. Also, the first person narratives of the veterans come off as wooden and unnatural. I think this is mainly due to the editing by Dr. Li to knit together the veteran's answers to his uniform list of questions. The most unrealistic sounding narrative came from a Chinese veteran where he recounts for several pages the exact payloads of American bombing in North Vietnam and other statistics.

Lastly, I felt that some of Dr. Li's conclusions, which he explicitly states as being based on the narratives, are not proven by the preceding text.

Vietnam War as peripheral operation in larger Cold War

Almost forty years after America pulled out of South Vietnam, and more than twenty years after the end of the Cold War, the myth that the United States really "lost" the Vietnam War still lingers. Xiaobing Li's "Voices from the Vietnam War" presents detailed interviews of participants from all sides of the conflict that clarify the crucial link between "losing" Vietnam and "winning" the Cold War. The Vietnam War was merely one peripheral operation in a global conflict, and became the battlefield for achieving the larger U.S. goal of undermining "relations between Beijing and Moscow" (page 223). One Army of the Republic of Vietnam officer even suspected this was the case, concluding: "Many of us [South Vietnamese] felt that the war was designed by the American leaders in the White House for us not to win" (page 26). Taking advantage of mounting Sino-Soviet tensions, which were greatly amplified by the Vietnam War, the U.S. withdrawal from South Vietnam in 1973 was quickly followed by the "normalization" of Sino-American relations, the resulting shift in the "balance of power between the two superpowers," and the initiation of a two-front Sino-U.S. alliance that "seriously overextended the Soviet Union's strength and power" (page 228). As this book makes clear, winning the Cold War first required destroying the Communist coalition, which was Washington's true--albeit unstated--strategic objective in the Vietnam War.

This book, as an oral history collection, tells twenty-two personal stories of American, Vietnamese, Chinese, Russian, and Korean soldiers and officers. It shares the life of international veterans, whether from a U.S. Marine or Chinese major, a Korean captain or Russian spy, and reveals ironic similarities and differences. In their own words, they share first-hand accounts of their war experience in Vietnam as well as their family life before and after the war. The book provides Communist stories from the “other side of the hill,” including a general of the People’s Liberation Armed Forces (PLAF, or Viet Cong), officers of the North Vietnamese Army (NVA, or officially the People’s Army of Vietnam, PAVN), Chinese soldiers of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA, China’s armed forces), and a Russian officer. These stories bring a fresh insight from Communist veterans, examining their motivation, operations, and perception. Their narratives humanize and contextualize the war’s events, while shedding light on aspects of the war previously unknown to Western scholars, and provide an international perspective for readers to have a better understanding of America’s longest war.

This book’s focus moves away from the conventional combat-centered war history and instead looks into the relatively neglected subject of men and women’s lives beyond the battleground. By examining topics such as their religion, marriage, education, and occupation in their home countries, the work details veteran backgrounds before the war and their civilian life after. It puts each veteran in the context of the society, culture, and politics. By meeting these young soldiers and junior officers and telling their stories, this work employs a social history methodology and provides an impetus to larger issues. It shows from the bottom up that each society has its own way to transform its civilians into soldiers, and that the people viewed and responded to similar problems differently. Oral history, of course, has its own weaknesses. The book does not intend to present a comprehensive coverage of the war, but a “limited” presentation of the voices of the international soldiers from all sides. Their stories may not be the bloodiest, but they will broaden our perspective on the war. Some of them are non-combat stories such as logistics, intelligence, medic, and engineering, whose roles and contributions are often overlooked by historians.

Korea chapter misses the mark

This is a review of Chapter 12 on communist prisoners held in Korea, because it is what I have detailed knowledge of. The author thoroughly misunderstands the issue and is unaware of basic research.

Doyle presents the U.S. military interpretation of events on Koje-do, the prison island that held at its peak 170,000 communist prisoners. Many POWs turned against communism and said they would refuse to go home after the war. The U.S. announced it would not forcibly repatriate them, creating a public relations debacle for China and North Korea. To avoid the embarrassment of foot soldiers defecting en masse, they demanded full repatriation and continued the war for 18 months unsuccessfully trying to get it. That's the official story, but it's been known to be thoroughly incomplete since at least 1983 when mainstream historians began debunking it.

Barton Bernstein (1983, in Cumings, _Child of Conflict_) and Rosemary Foot (1990, _A Substitute for Victory_) demonstrated that many of the communist prisoners were actually forced to renounce repatriation. They proved this with testimony from American officials including ambassador to South Korean John Muccio, armistice negotiator C. Turner Joy, and the State Department's Charles Stelle. A psychological warfare operation had sent South Korean and Chinese nationalist agents into Koje-do to organize a defection campaign. Aided by the guards, they took control of one barracks after another, then terrorized prisoners into refusing repatriation. A minority of prisoners were anticommunist and assisted them. After the armistice the nonrepatriate prisoners were put under the jurisdiction of troops from India for 120 days where they were supposed to be able to change their minds and go home without danger. But the barracks leaders used squads of brutal, deadly enforcers who prevented POWs from approaching the gates. This is documented by two Indian authors in _History of the Custodian Force (India) in Korea_ (Prasad 1976) and _India's Role in the Korean Question_ (Dayal 1959).

Doyle does not downplay the psyops defection program, he leaves it out altogether. As a result, he accepts the claim of American officers that the rioting and killings on Koje-do were due to the communists' fanatical insistence that POWs continue combat operations after capture. There was some of that. But the scope and intensity of fighting came from prisoners trying to keep control of their barracks from the KMT and ROK agents bent on forced non-repatriation.

POW History Fascinating

As a former U.S. Army officer and Viet Nam war combat veteran, I saw some prisoners and heard tales of what might happen to them. I also enjoy learning about history and, in particular, military history.This book fulfilled all of my expectations and then some about the subject. Mr. Doyle provided fascinating insights about the various levels of accepted treatment of prisoners throughout our country's history.

From the tobacco fields of Henry County to the coal mines of Appalachia, Kentucky has produced and nurtured many exceptional writers, from James Still, Robert Penn Warren, and Jane Mayhall to three Yale Younger Poets prizewinners in recent years. What Comes Down to Us unites twenty-five of Kentucky's most accomplished contemporary poets in an impressive collection that includes emerging writers as well as such familiar names as Wendell Berry, Frank X Walker, James Baker Hall, Jane Gentry, and George Ella Lyon. Whether they are transplants from other parts of the country or homegrown in the Bluegrass State, all identify themselves as Kentucky poets. Collectively, their work represents the diversity and vitality of modern verse in the commonwealth.

Although geographical boundaries are not their sole focus, these poems convey a strong sense of place. The poets' reflections on their personal approaches and literary techniques are included with their works, illuminating aspects of the often mystifying poetic process. In his introduction, editor Jeff Worley places these contemporary writers in the context of the state's storied literary legacy. As a whole, the eclectic company and exquisite verse of What Comes Down to Us affirms Kentucky's continued presence on the landscape of contemporary American poetry.

Jeff Worley is the author of three poetry collections including The Only Time There Is, which won the Mid-List Press first book competition in 1995, A Simple Human Motion, and Happy Hour at the Two Keys Tavern, which was named 2006 Kentucky Book of the Year in poetry. His poems have been published widely and he won the Atlanta Review 2002 grand prize for the poem "His Funeral."
