Women and the White House: Gender, Popular Culture, and Presidential PoliticsFrom Brand: The University Press of Kentucky

The president of the United States traditionally serves as a symbol of power, virtue, ability, dominance, popularity, and patriarchy. In recent years, however, the high-profile candidacies of Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin, and Michelle Bachmann have provoked new interest in gendered popular culture and how it influences Americans' perceptions of the country's highest political office.

In this timely volume, editors Justin S. Vaughn and Lilly J. Goren lead a team of scholars in examining how the president and the first lady exist as a function of public expectations and cultural gender roles. The authors investigate how the candidates' messages are conveyed, altered, and interpreted in "hard" and "soft" media forums, from the nightly news to daytime talk shows, and from tabloids to the blogosphere. They also address the portrayal of the presidency in film and television productions such as Kisses for My President (1964), Air Force One (1997), and Commander in Chief (2005).

With its strong, multidisciplinary approach, Women and the White House commences a wider discussion about the possibility of a female president in the United States, the ways in which popular perceptions of gender will impact her leadership, and the cultural challenges she will face.

Review
"At a time when college students seem more likely to get their political news from 'The Daily Show' than newspapers or even television network news, this lively collection of essays will help them decode many of the political messages they receive from popular culture."―Bruce Altschuler, author of Acting Presidents: 100 Years of Plays about the Presidency"

"Winner of the Susan Koppelman Award

Winner of the Peter C. Rollins Award for Popular Culture"

"In a series of grounded, empirically and theoretically rich studies, Vaughn and Goren have brought together chapters that explore the relationships among gender, popular culture and the presidency in a thoughtful, nuanced way. These studies expose why and how popular culture reflects and shapes public consciousness about political life in general and gender in specific. The gendered reality of popular culture has profound implications for women's political prospects. This is an important, impressive book."―Lane Crothers, author of Globalization and American Popular Culture"

"Heightened interest by political scientists in analyzing the impact of shifting popular culture platforms on candidate framing, representations of gender and race, election dynamics and leadership strategies makes this eclectic volume a timely and stimulating foray . This is a rich, sometimes quirky and necessarily improvisational volume which hunts some very big game. The (mostly) younger scholars here energetically and eclectically traverse the multi-leveled terrain of mass culture, executive power, political engagement, political knowledge and the iterations of gender and race which run throughout. Vaughn and Goren's ambitious volume is an excellent effort that helps bring the specific ways of knowing offered by political science to the cross-field, cross-disciplinary urge to unpack the large-scale dynamics of culture and politics in a digital, entertainment age. This volume offers uniquely current content for courses on the American presidency, elections, media and politics, women and politics, race studies and pop culture."―Christine Kelly, professor of political science, William Paterson University"

"With its focus on popular culture, Women and the White House provides an important missing link in our understanding of the relationship between gender and the presidency. This path-breaking volume demonstrates the crucial and multifaceted role that popular culture plays in influencing and reflecting how women negotiate the terrain of high-level executive politics."―Susan J. Carroll, Professor of Political Science and Women's and Gender Studies, Rutgers University"

"Featuring twelve articles from a variety of accomplished scholars, this book considers the intersection of gender, popular culture, and the presidency from a multitude of angles. Covering such wide-ranging topics as SNL, the White House garden, Oprah, the West Wing, viral videos, Sarah Palin, history, and tabloids, this book sheds a lot of light on America's lack of a female Commander-in-Chief. With such an array of subjects, this book is sure to have something for anyone even vaguely interested in the gendered politics of the American system. I know I was both fascinated and enlightened. ― San Francisco Book Review"―Audrey Curtis, San Francisco Book Review

"Dear Appalachia breathes new life into literary reception studies....A dream text for courses in regionalism or southern or Appalachian literature, this work is also a model for American literary and cultural studies methods courses."―The Southern Literary Journal

About the Author
Justin S. Vaughn is assistant professor of political science at Boise State University.

An American Mirror
By Henry
Films in one way or another are a mirror for their culture in which they're made. They show who we are, who we want to be, what we're afraid we are. We do the same thing with our citizen kings: the presidents of the United States. This superb book looks at how Hollywood has looked at our presidents and thus how Hollywood has looked at us. Anyone interested in film or history will find this a fascinating look at America.

Essential Reading on American Music
By grasshopper4
The updated version of this important study is a welcome addition to the history of American popular music. Each chapter is a thorough overview of various genres and eras of folk and popular music in America. The central claim that most of what we perceive to be American music is deeply rooted in the music of America's southland is a strong one, and it adds to our understanding of connections between regional culture and history. The excellent discography provides a terrific guide to important musicians and recordings, and the new information on Cajun, Zydeco, Norteno, and contemporary acoustic music update the earlier edition.

Lance Banning was one of the most distinguished historians of his generation. His first book, The Jeffersonian Persuasion: Evolution of a Party Ideology, was a groundbreaking study of the ideas and principles that influenced political conflict in the early American Republic. His revisionist masterpiece, The Sacred Fire of Liberty: James Madison and the Founding of the Federal Republic, received the Merle Curti Award in Intellectual History from the Organization of American Historians and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

Banning was assembling this collection of his best and most representative writings on the Founding era when his untimely death stalled the project just short of its completion. Now, thanks to the efforts of editor Todd Estes, this illuminating resource is finally available. Founding Visions showcases the work of a historian who shaped the intellectual debates of his time. Review
"Lance Banning's balanced but penetrating view of historical materials makes him a vital mediator in scholarly disputes, one who knows how to bring light rather than heat to controversies better understood as joint contributions. Each of these essays also exhibits a different methodological approach to the all-important question of 'what actually happened.' As such, this collection reaches far beyond those interested in the foundations of the American republic. Every historian, whether beginning or advanced, will benefit from reading this book."―Robert A. Ferguson, Columbia University

"Banning's impeccable scholarship has shaped the way we think about early American history, and the essays in this volume show him at the peak of his very considerable powers."―Peter S. Onuf, Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies, Monticello

Blood in the Hills: A History of Violence in Appalachia (New Directions In Southern History)From Brand: The University Press of Kentucky

To many antebellum Americans, Appalachia was a frightening wilderness of lawlessness, peril, robbers, and hidden dangers. The extensive media coverage of horse stealing and scalping raids profiled the region's residents as intrinsically violent. After the Civil War, this characterization continued to permeate perceptions of the area and news of the conflict between the Hatfields and the McCoys, as well as the bloodshed associated with the coal labor strikes, cemented Appalachia's violent reputation. Blood in the Hills: A History of Violence in Appalachia provides an in-depth historical analysis of hostility in the region from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century. Editor Bruce E. Stewart discusses aspects of the Appalachian violence culture, examining skirmishes with the native population, conflicts resulting from the region's rapid modernization, and violence as a function of social control. The contributors also address geographical isolation and ethnicity, kinship, gender, class, and race with the purpose of shedding light on an often-stereotyped regional past. Blood in the Hills does not attempt to apologize for the region but uses detailed research and analysis to explain it, delving into the social and political factors that have defined Appalachia throughout its violent history.

Review
"An important contribution." ―Ronald Lewis, author of Welsh Americans: A History of Assimilation in the Coalfields"

"Blood in the Hills is the first systematic exploration of the myths and realities of violence in the Southern Appalachian region. An important work for scholars and students of Appalachian History that will add much to the field."―Daniel S. Pierce, author of Real NASCAR: White Lightning, Red Clay, and Big Bill France"

"The contributors to Blood in the Hills at once challenge the persistent myth of a culturally backward and inherently violent Appalachia while looking squarely at violence in the region to understand its complexity, sources, and consequences from the 18th to the early 20th centuries. Written by senior scholars and rising stars, most of them historians, these studies provide deep and critical insights into the role of violence in regional and national history and the political, economic, racial, and religious conflicts that engender it. While they challenge pejorative representations, they also provide an indispensable antidote to the all-too-prevalent romanticization of Appalachia."―Dwight Billings. author of Back Talk from Appalachia: Confronting Stereotypes"

"Some of the region's brightest young scholars confront old images and received theories about mountain culture and offer new insights to violent episodes in the region's history. In so doing they tie that violence to 'deeper tensions within the fabric of American society.' A must read for those who seek to understand Appalachia as a window to the American experience rather than an exception to it." -Ronald D Eller, author of Uneven Ground: Appalachia since 1945"

"Stewart and 13 other contributors challenge the resulting stereotypes in essays that explore instances of violence that occured in the 18th-20th centuries. . . . Highly recommended."―Choice"

"Stewart challenges the myth of intrinsic agression. . . seek[ing] to understand, but not to underplay, the role of violence in Appalachia."―Manchester Enterprise"

"Prompts us to more carefully reconsider the role of violence in other American regions and cultures―a quality that makes it easily recommendable to a wide range of popular readers and scholars alike."―North Carolina Historical Review"

"Stewart seeks to understand, but not to underplay, the role of violence in Appalachia." ―Bristol Herald Courier"

"The essays offer "texture and complexity," a fresh look at a topic that has stubbornly resisted popular revision. ―Martin Crawford"―Martin Crawford, The Register of Kentucky Historical Society

"Blood in the Hills is an amazing contribution that should be read by historians and public policymakers if we are hopeful of ever reaching real solutions to the problems plaguing the region's lingering violence, poverty, and political corruption."―William Gorby, West Virginia History

"[A] valuable and praiseworthy volume."―The Journal of American History

"This collection adds another important histiographical layer to the study of violence in Appalachia." ― Staphanie M. Lang, University of Kentucky"

"Blood in the Hills is recommended for anyone studying Appalachia, especially North Carolina and Kentucky, as well as for those interested in post-Civil War violence in America."―Georgia Libraries Quarterly

There's a reason why we have courts of law
By B. Wolinsky
Long before the Ten Commandments, there was something called the Noahide Laws, or the Seven Laws of the Sons of Noah. Aside from the obvious ones, like don’t steal, worship idols, or mouth off to your mom & dad, it also says set up courts to hear disputes. Now the reason for the last one is simple; without courts, we’d have no choice but to seek revenge for every slight.
Blood in the Hills is essentially about how a man’s life wasn’t worth much in the Appalachians, and that law was based on revenge. The first few chapters are all about mass murders by Cherokee Indians, brigands, and paramilitaries in this lawless region. Next comes a chapter on how the slaves were abused, then free Black people were targeted, then the hostility extended to newcomers, strikers, vacation homeowners etc. Life was cheap.

All stereotypes aside, the Appalachians, like the Deep South, don’t have a good reputation; mean spirited gun-toting natives, few jobs, lousy schools, alcoholism, drug addiction, and promiscuity. Despite the bucolic features, there’s widespread pollution from the mines. The TV special Hidden America: Children of the Mountains shows that there’s still alcoholism, but now there’s prescription pill addiction too. The kids are hungry, and despite the vast empty lands, nobody’s growing any food. This region seems devoid of motivation, and as Thomas Sowell points out in Black Rednecks and White Liberals, there’s a dislike for people that try to improve things.

It wasn’t just the hill towns that were violent; the city of Roanoke had riots over a Black suspect in a crime. Mobs of White man tried to storm the jail and lynch him, and they didn’t care about the lawmen or state militiamen guarding the jail. They had no tolerance for the law at all, and their motivation for wanting to kill the suspect had little to do with fear, and more to do with “he’s encroaching on our turf.”

Some of the material in the book was covered in All God’s Children by Fox Butterfield. In that book, the author claims that Black-on-Black killings are a habit learned from Southern Whites, who learned it from their Scottish ancestors. I learned about southern killing culture back in college, when a professor showed us photos of lynchings. Many of these photos were printed as souvenir postcards; there were people crowding around, kids eating ices, and all the while a dead body was hanging from a tree. The professor compared it to drive-by shootings, where kids shoot each other over insults. In the south, the word “no” was an insult, and all insults had to be avenged.

Killing someone? That was like stepping on a cockroach. There was no value placed on a man’s life.

Chapter 8 "Deep in the Shades of Ill-Starred Georgia's Wood"
By Jane Briggs
I haven't had time to read most of the book, but there was about 30 pages of my family history and their lives in Varnell's Station, GA and the murder of Joseph Standing, Mormon Missionary. My great uncle, William L. Kaneaster, wrote a bit of the his family and the happenings of what he had seen and heard as a young man. I had always wondered what the rest of the story was. Now I know and it makes sense. That story alone made the book well worth my time and money. Thank you.....jane

From Publishers Weekly
The 105 writers in this anthology "have been relegated to the fringes of the American literary community, largely because their 'place'-Appalachia-continues to be viewed as outside the American mainstream," contend Ballard and Hudson in their introduction to this collection of writing by women from the Appalachian Mountains. Of course, not all Appalachian women writers are on the "fringes" of the literary community (Barbara Kingsolver, Dorothy Allison and Annie Dillard). But many, such as North Carolina ballad singer Sheila Kay Adams and Kentucky short story writer Lucy Furman, are relatively obscure. The editors wisely incorporate a mix of both famous and unfamiliar authors to present an impressive and stirring display of (mostly) contemporary writings by women whose "identities have been marked by life" in Appalachia. The subjects covered include nature, motherhood, poverty and sexuality. A brief biography introduces each contributor, making this a particularly helpful reference work.

Salley a writer in Hartwell
By Salley McInerney
I discovered "Listen Here" while browsing with girlfriends in a bookstore in Spruce Pine, N.C. this past weekend. I was completely charmed by the book's contents. So much so, that while I and my four friends ran errands around town,I read selections from the book from the backseat of the car. We laughed and cried over the things I read, identifying so well with the stories, feelings and images of women's everyday lives which are so eloquently depicted in "Listen Here." This is a wonderful addition to any library of fine, deeply-felt writing. Men will enjoy it; women will celebrate it.
I am in the process of publishing my own book and hope that it will touch readers the way this book has touched me. Congratulations to Sandra Ballard and Patricia Hudson - you've produced a masterpiece. That's all I have to say before the season starts - a line which will make sense to you if you read "Listen Here."

True Appalachia
By A Customer
If you have an interest in Appalachian cultre, history, literature, or women this is a must. I discovered this book while doing research on female Appalachian writers (a genre largely ignore by the literary communiy). These writers will touch your heart, bring a tear to your eye, bring a smile and make you laugh out loud. The best collection of Appalachian writing I have had the good fortune to come across. A wonderful way to experience Appalahia if you are a stranger to the culture, an even better way to remember it if you've left the area, and finally a wonderful stroll down memory lane if you are living it.

Great Reader
By Dog Runner
If you are a serious student or aficionado of appalachian literature, this is a must have. Listen Here is an anthology of excerpts from 105 women authors "whose lives have been marked by life in the Appalachian mountains" (from the introduction). The anthology includes works ranging from 1826-2002. There are two reasons to buy this book. First, if you are a lit teacher,it will introduce your students to an amazing breadth of appalachian writers and their very good writing. It is an excellent companion to full-length works to expand your students' exposure. Second, it gives you just enough from each author to let you know whether you want to read the complete work. And there will be several full length works you will want to find and read!

Exposing the Third Reich: Colonel Truman Smith in Hitler's Germany (American Warrior Series), by Henry G. Gole

As World War II recedes from living memory, there remain untold stories of important behind-the-scenes operatives who provided vital support to the leaders celebrated in historical accounts. Colonel Truman Smith is one of the most compelling figures from this period, but there has never been a biography of this important and controversial man. In Exposing the Third Reich, Henry G. Gole tells this soldier's story for the first time.

An American aristocrat from a prominent New England family, Smith was first assigned to Germany in 1919 during the Allied occupation and soon became known as a regional expert. During his second assignment in the country as a military attaché in 1935, he arranged for his good friend Charles Lindbergh to inspect the Luftwaffe. The Germans were delighted to have the famous aviator view their planes, enabling Smith to gather key intelligence about their air capability. His savvy cultivation of relationships rendered him invaluable throughout his service, particularly as an aide to General George C. Marshall; however, the colonel's friendliness with Germany also aroused suspicion that he was a Nazi sympathizer.

Gole demonstrates that, far from condoning Hitler, Smith was among the first to raise the alarm: he predicted many of the Nazis' moves years in advance and feared that the international community would not act quickly enough. Featuring many firsthand observations of the critical changes in Germany between the world wars, this biography presents an indispensable look both at a fascinating figure and at the nuances of the interwar years.

Review
"Colonel Gole's appraisal of Truman Smith presents us with the story of one of the many unsung heroes of World War II, against the backdrop of the turbulent history of Germany in the middle years of the 20th century. As World War II recedes rapidly from living memory, there are many such stories remaining to be told of the behind-the-scenes 'heavy lifters' of the period. Truman Smith's story is one of the most important and compelling."―David T. Zabecki, Major General David T. Zabecki, AUS (Ret.)

"Gole is well qualified to write a biography of Truman Smith. In addition to the invaluable memoirs of Truman and Kay Smith, he had access to their correspondence and conducted extensive research of relevant books and articles. His experience as a soldier has helped him understand Smith's military career."―Edward M. Coffman, from the foreword

"Gole demonstrates that, far from condoning Hitler, [Colonel Truman] Smith was among the first to raise the alarm: he predicted many of the Nazis' moves years in advance and feared that the international community would not act quickly enough. ""Exposing the Third Reich" is a fascinating book about a virtually unknown officer who played a major role in the development of U.S military planning before and during World War II."―Bowling Green Daily News

"Henry Gole, a veteran of Korea and Vietnam, tells for the first time the interesting story of Smith, his wife Kay, and their lives in and with Germany during [the Third Reich]. This is an account of Smith's professional careers as well as a very personal story of a deep and affectionate family relationship....Exposing the Third Reich is a highly stimulating read. Gole's biography constitutes a real contribution to the historiography of U.S.-German relations and American military thinking about Germany's strengthening positing in the 1930s."―The Journal of Military History

Hitler's Germany as Seen by the American Military Attaché
By Albert A. Nofi
A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com:

' Entering the army as a New York National Guardsman, Truman Smith served on the Mexican border and on the Western Front . At the end of the Great War he was on occupation duty in Germany (1919-1920), and then served as an assistant military attaché there (1920-1924), during which he got to know many people, including the then virtually unknown Adolf Hitler. Returning stateside, he performed troop and school duty, and became an intelligence analyst. In 1935 he returned to Germany as the military attaché. Smith renewed old friendships, developed new ones, and began sending a steady flow of information back to Washington on the Nazi movement, German rearmament, and the prospects for war. It is this period on which Gole focuses. His book is full of Smith’s movements and contacts and analyses of his reports. There is a good look at the social world of the attaché, one in which his wealthy wife played an important role, and frequent profiles by both Smiths of many Germans and Americans, Hitler, US Ambassador Dodd, Göring, Lindbergh, and more. Although Smith and his wife were conservative, rather snobbish, and surprisingly unmoved by the fate of Germany’s Jews, Gole demonstrates that Colonel Smith’s work was of importance to the American understanding of the Nazi regime and to the U.S. Army’s preparations for war. A valuable read for anyone interested in intelligence, or just for its look at Europe in the years during which it slid toward war.'

Expose yourself to Truman Smith
By Jack M. Kerns
Exposing the Third Reich, Henry Gole's fourth book, is a great read of the story of Colonel Truman Smith, who played a major part in intelligence gathering of the buildup of the German Army and Air Force prior to WWII. Smith, who served as an infantry officer in the Great War, WWI, observed and reported on post-WWI Germany to include political and military developments. In 1922, Smith interviewed Adolf Hitler and reported that he was deeply impressed by Hitler's personality and thought it likely that he would play an important part in German politics. Smith had extensive contacts in the German military as well as American contacts such as Charles Lindbergh, who played an important role in obtaining intelligence on the German air force. Hermann Goering once time told Smith, with tears in his eyes, 'Smith, there are only three truly great characters in all of history; Buddha, Jesus Christ, and Adolf Hitler.' Exposing the Third Reich is a fascinating read for both students of German history and American military officers interested in a well written and researched story of an intelligent man from a wealthy family who wanted to serve his country. As a disclaimer, I was a student of Henry Gole's when I was a cadet at West Point. Having said that, I summon up as much objectivity as I can muster and highly recommend Exposing the Third Reich. Go expose yourself.

A fascinating read
By a customer
COL Gole's book is both informational and well written. He is able to bring an accomplished officer from historical obscurity and relate how his background, access, and dedication were pivotal in our Army's understanding of German rearmament, Hitler's proclivities and intentions, and the German populace's attitudes prior to WWII. COL Smith remained knowledgeable and active in German affairs after the war and continued to provide wise counsel on German affairs into the Cold War. Gole reminds us that world events are molded and understood by many personalities who are frequently forgotten to history, but who's actions were pivotal to contemporary leadership. I highly recommend this book. A compelling perspective of an accomplished officer.

To Train His Soul in Books: Syriac Asceticism in Early Christianity (Studies In Early Christianity)From The Catholic University of Ameri

Flourishing from the inland cities of Syria down through the Tigris and Euphrates valley, Syriac speakers in late antiquity created a new and often brilliant expression of Christian culture. Although the origins of their traditions are notoriously difficult to trace, authors of fourth-century Syrian communities achieved sophisticated forms of expression whose content little resembles the Christian culture of their neighbors to the west. From the fourth through the seventh centuries they achieved religious works of great beauty and complexity.

Increasing interest in Syriac Christianity has prompted recent translations and studies. To Train His Soul in Books explores numerous aspects of this rich religious culture, extending previous lines of scholarly investigation and demonstrating the activity of Syriac-speaking scribes and translators busy assembling books for the training of biblical interpreters, ascetics, and learned clergy.

Befitting an intensely literary culture, it begins with the development of Syriac poetry--the genre beloved by Ephrem and other, anonymous authors. It considers the long tradition of Aramaic and Syriac words for the chronic condition of sin, and explores the dimensions of the immense work of Syriac translators with a study of the Syriac life of Athanasius. Essays consider the activity of learned ascetics, with a proposal of the likely monastic origin of the Apocalypse of Daniel; the goal and concept of renunciation; and the changes rung by Syriac-speaking ascetics on the daily reality of housekeeping.

Also included in the volume are two essays on the influence of Syriac literary culture on Greek traditions, and in turn ascetic life. Finally, an original poem in Syriac demonstrates the continuing vitality of this culture, both in its homeland and in the Diaspora.

These essays seek to extend and honor the work of renowned scholar and pillar of the Department of Semitic and Egyptian Languages at the Catholic University of America, Sidney H. Griffith.

Articles on a variety of Syriac topics
By Paul Stevenson
This volume is a collection of articles written in honor of Professor Sidney H. Griffith of the Catholic University of America. (Full disclosure: He supervised my doctoral dissertation.) Prof. Griffith is a well known scholar of Syriac and of Christian Arabic. The articles in this book concentrate on the Syriac aspect of his work. Quite a variety of topics are covered here. Two articles deal with Syriac poetry, while the rest deal with the ascetic practices of Syrian "solitaries" (a kind of proto-monk) and monks.

This is not a full academic review of the book, so I will just give the table of contents and my comments on a few of the articles.

PART I. POETRY AND EPHREM THE SYRIAN
1. "Syriac Stropic Poetry: Intercalated Psalms," by Joseph P. Amar
2. "Efrén de Nisibe, Himnos De Virginitate, I-III," by Francisco Javier Martínez
This is a translation into Spanish, with commentary, of Ephrem's Hymns I-III on Virginity. Martínez offers some useful notes contrasting his translation choices with those of previous translators.

PART II. TEXTS, TERMS, METAPHORS
3. "Redeem Your Sins through Works of Charity," by Gary A. Anderson
4. "A Monastic Setting for the Syriac Apocalypse of Daniel," by Alexander Golitzin
What struck me as most interesting about this article was Golitzin's observation that this apocalypse was written at a time when what can popularly be called "end times fever" was gripping the Syriac-speaking Christian world in the aftermath of the conquest by Islam. As is typical in troubled times, a host of dire end-of-the-world scenarios was spun by Christian writers who were upset by the emergence of Islam. These dire apocalypses seem to have perturbed the normal order of monastic life, so the author of this Apocalypse of Daniel wrote a work that completely ignored events in the wider world, in an apparent attempt to get the monks focused again on their inner, spiritual lives instead of being obsessed with "end times" prophecies.

5. "A Syraic Life of Athanasius of Alexandria," by Michael J. Hollerich
6. "Radical Renunciation: The Ideal of msarrquta," by Sebastian P. Brock.
7. "Housekeeping: An Ascetic Theme in Late Antiquity," by Susan Ashbrook Harvey
8. "The Influence of Evagrius Pontus," by Robin Darling Young
9. "The Syriac Discourses of Beh Isho` Kamulaya," by Monica J. Blanchard
10. "Ode to Joy," by Shawqi Talia
This final article is in fact a poem written in honor of Prof. Griffith, in the ancient Syriac tradition, by an Assyrian Christian and long-time colleague of Prof. Griffith in the Semitics Department of CUA. It is written in Neo-Aramaic (Surath dialect) and accompanied by an English translation.
