They dominated the music scene for fifteen years with some 600 recordings, appearances in seventeen films, cabaret performances, and countless radio and television appearances.
Swing It! is the first published biography of this incredibly popular trio. The book includes many rarely published photos and features extensive career data, including a detailed discography, filmography, and listing of their radio and television appearances between 1938 and 1967. The Andrews Sisters had their big break with the 1937 release of the Yiddish tune "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon (Means that You're Grand)," which sold 350,000 copies in one month and established the trio as successful recording artists. The sisters are now probably best remembered for their work entertaining troops in World War II. They traveled across the U.S. and to Italy and Africa, and their recording of "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" for the film Buck Privates became synonymous with the war effort. Part of the reason for the success of the Andrews Sisters was their ability to perform so many different types of music. They repeatedly achieved major hits with melodies derived from many different countries, becoming the first and most prominent artists of their time to bring ethnic-influenced music to the forefront of America's hit parade. The Andrews Sisters separated for two years in the 1950s as the strain of constantly living, working, and playing together for over four decades took its toll. They reunited in 1956 and continued to perform together until LaVerne's death from cancer in 1967.
The Andrews Sisters remain the most successful and enduring female vocal group in the history of show business. Theirs are the voices that defined an era.

It's impossible to think of the 1940s without conjuring the Andrews Sisters. Their brash, optimistic sound, tight harmonies, and sophisticated rhythms were part of the soundtrack of the World War II years. Surprisingly, this is the first biogaphy of the trio. Patty, Maxene, and LaVerne were born in Minneapolis to Greek and Norwegian parents; they sang together for more than three decades, recorded 600 songs, starred in their own radio show, and appeared in 17 movies; they made the top ten Billboard charts more often than Elvis or the Beatles and influenced the Supremes, the Pointer Sisters, Bette Midler, and The Manhattan Transfer. Sforza is admirably thorough in detailing the group's recording career but is less successful as a biographer; although he tells us that they fought and split up for two years, he doesn't providing any insight into what must have been very complex relationships. And overall, he never makes the singers come alive as individuals. (The most vivid chapter covers their wartime tours.) But Sforza's lengthy discography and filmography are of documentary value. Of the Andrews sisters, "Patty was a lively, boisterous, fun-loving blonde," Maxene "a pretty, ready-for-action brunette," and La Verne "a tall, self-deprecating, slightly reserved redhead." They cut records with many of Hollywood's biggest stars, including Bing Crosby, Carmen Miranda, and Danny Kaye, as well as with most of the big names of the big band era, scoring hits in boogie, polka, western swing, and other styles. Sforza proceeds from the quaint, probably unwarranted presumption that the Andrews inhabited a simpler time, before "the Baby Boom, the Cold War, Woodstock, and the sexual revolution." Apparently, World War II and the Holocaust were appalling but uncomplicated in comparison. It is interesting, by the way, to note that many Andrews Sisters selections might now give Walmart and other prudish marketers pause: "Beer Barrel Polka," "Rum and Coca Cola," "Pistol Packin' Mama" "Beat Me, Daddy, Eight to the Bar" --pretty suggestive fare for impressionable minds, wouldn't you say? Sforza attempts to examine the songs and success of the legendary Andrews Sisters, the vocal trio who in the 1940s rivaled crooners Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra as the most popular musical act in America. The Andrews Sisters (Maxene, LaVerne, and Patty) enjoyed a phenomenal run of success, from their 1937 hit ``Bei Mir Bist Du Sch"n'' through their first breakup in 1953. During that time they placed over 100 songs on the Billboard magazine charts; headlined New York's Paramount Theater (then the mecca of performing that Radio City Music Hall and Madison Square Garden are today) more often than any other act; had their own radio show, The Andrews Sisters Show; and became motion picture stars (appearing in multiple pictures with Abbott & Costello, among others). As the numbers prove, they clearly were at the pinnacle of the show-business world. Unfortunately, Sforza relies almost exclusively on those numbers, which could be extracted from any number of sources, to tell their story. And given the legendary fighting among the three, Maxene's controversial marriage to manager Lou Levy (who charged the sisters' father, Olga, with threatening his life, largely because of anti-Semitism), and their various health problems, there is much more to the Andrews Sisters' story than the numbers. Sforza makes some attempt to delve into these issues, but he is foiled by his lack of access to new first-hand evidence, for which he substitutes old newspaper articles, gossip reports, magazine stories, previously published interviews, whatever he can get his hands on. Nor does Sforza come across as a passionate fan. Instead of injecting his own voice, he is content with dry recitation: ``The trio headlined at the Paramount with Mitchell Ayres and his orchestra during the summer months of 1943. . . . The trio then became series regulars on CBS' s The Roma Wines Show, starring Mary Astor. . . . The trio's last record release of the year was `Shoo Shoo Baby,' which made Billboard's top-ten list for sixteen weeks.'' In such by-the-yard passages, Sforza seems to forget he's writing about big-band music a generation of fans considered lively and fun. Given his lack of access to new material, and his lack of enthusiasm for the group, one wonders why Sforza even picked the Andrews Sisters as his subject matter. "Swing It" SWINGS!

A factual, interesting, & entertaining read on the seldom written Andrews Sisters. As the first of its kind it offers a wealth of information on the very popular vocal group who surpassed Elvis & the Beatles on the billboard charts. Lots of great photos with Crosby, Sinatra, Dean Martin, Abbott & Costello, Joey Bishop, Red Skelton & "STOOGE" Shemp Howard. Not a tell all by any means but an insightful look into the personal relationship of the sisters by a dedicated fan. Says the Seattle Times in the December 12, 1999 issue, "in addition to thoroughly documenting the Andrews Sisters' musical contribution - and especially their importance during World War II - "Swing It" is also an invaluable record of the pop-music business before rock, before huge arena shows...a time when the musical talents of performers were more important than those of the electronic geniuses that record them. John Sforza has written a readable account of their careers...an impressive amount of detailed research went into this book." Customer reviews that have been posted thus far seem a bit off the mark especially if the reader lived during that exciting era. Lots of nostalgic memories & interesting analysis throughout. Recommended to put you "In the Mood."

great book

I've looked for a book like this and here it is. What a great story with some very intresting photos, too. Of course we all want someone to dish some more on the behind-the-scenes catfights between these sisters, but John Sforza took the high road and didn't rely on the cheap shots or the Enquirer style. This is an extremely dignified look at the Anderews Sisters career and if you like their music, you'll love this book.

I was so excited to finally find a book about the legendary Andrews Sisters--the songbirds I fell in love with ever since I saw them in some early Abbott and Costello films. Their music is timeless and this book is a fantastic companion for any fan. A must for your bookshelf. The compiled discography and film and TV appearance log is an invaluable reference, and the book is lovingly assembled as well. I wish there were more quotes from surviving Patty Andrews but I get the feeling the author was not allowed access to the aging crooner. Very few people have gotten the true story behind the Andrews Sisters and this book finally lays it all out in a very interesting and friendly manner. At last, a book on these gals. Some great photos, as well. It made me want more. Bravo, Mr. Sforza.
