Aquinas on Human Action: A Theory of Practice, by Ralph Mclnerny

A patient and faithful working of primary Thomistic texts, this volume presents a systematic and unified character of Aquinas's theory of moral agency as it relates to human action. Focusing especially on the Summa theologiae, Ralph McInerny carefully argues that Aquinas's theory of moral action stands up to contemporary needs and remains
adequate against contemporary criticism. This lively and incisive study by a first-rate scholar demonstrates a breadth of knowledge of Aquinas in a novel, yet scholarly, fashion.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Ralph McInerny was Michael P. Grace Professor of Medieval Studies in the department of philosophy at the University of Notre Dame. He cofounded Crisis magazine and was author of several books published by CUA Press, namely, the bestselling Ethica Thomistica, The Question of Christian Ethics, Boethius and Aquinas, and Praeambula Fidei.

PRAISE FOR THE ORIGINAL EDITION:

"Writing with admirable clarity, McInerny has produced a text faithful to the rigor of Aquinas's thinking and intelligible even to people with no special philosophical background. Aquinas would surely have approved."―International Philosophical Quarterly

"Simple while sophisticated, rigorous while engaging, introductory while leading one into the very heart of human action as Aquinas assimilates Aristotle and Augustine―all these qualities characterize this book by a master practitioner of moral philosophy."―Journal of Theological Studies

"A standard exposition of Aquinas's theory of moral action. McInerny covers themes such as human acts, happiness and the good, the structure of the moral act, freedom and coercion, means and ends, exterior and interior acts, the place of reason, conscience, natural law, and practical reasoning. . . . [McInerny] makes an excellent case for the restoration of the authority of Thomas Aquinas to a prominent place in contemporary ethical theory, especially among moral theologians."―Thomist

Great intro to human action
By EJTV
Great intro to human action in Aquinas. Easy read. Good quotes in Latin and English dual translation. Examples illustrating what Aquinas means a little dated but use your imagination and work with the writer. I only wish I would have taken a class or two from him while at ND.

Rückzug: The German Retreat from France, 1944 (Foreign Military Studies), by Joachim Ludewig

The Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, marked a critical turning point in the European theater of World War II. The massive landing on France's coast had been meticulously planned for three years, and the Allies anticipated a quick and decisive defeat of the German forces. Many of the planners were surprised, however, by the length of time it ultimately took to defeat the Germans.

While much has been written about D-day, very little has been written about the crucial period from August to September, immediately after the invasion. In Rückzug, Joachim Ludewig draws on military records from both sides to show that a quick defeat of the Germans was hindered by excessive caution and a lack of strategic boldness on the part of the Allies, as well as by the Germans' tactical skill and energy. This intriguing study, translated from German, not only examines a significant and often overlooked phase of the war, but also offers a valuable account of the conflict from the perspective of the German forces.

Review
"Much has been written in English on the Normandy invasion and campaign, as well as on later events, but virtually nothing is known of the crucial period from mid-August to mid-September 1944. Ludewig is the first historian to document in detail the Wehrmacht's retreat from France from the German perspective. He has produced a very solidly researched and documented study on a neglected area of the 1944 campaign in France. His analysis is clear and his explanations of German skill and missed Allied opportunities judicious."―Stephen G. Fritz, author of Ostkrieg: Hitler's War of Extermination in the East

"The story of how the final offensive stalled for months. . . . Ludewig offers insight into a phase of the European theater that I had not read elsewhere."―Washington Times

"A detailed, comprehensive account of the Wehrmacht's retreat from France. In spite of the desperate conditions under which it was conducted, it allowed the Germans to reconstitute a front along the Reich's western frontier and continue the war into 1945 at terrible cost to everyone. This is a major contribution to the history of World War II."―Williamson Murray

"Ludewig has written a first-rate historical study that sheds important light on a critical period of World War II in western Europe. His solidly researched and well-documented book provides a much needed German perspective on planning and conduct of operations that has been lacking in English for far too long."―John T. Greenwood, editor of From Normandy to Victor:The War Diary of General Courtney H. Hodges and the First U.S. Army

"Authoritative, compelling, and very-well researched. Rückzug is an invaluable addition to our understanding of the European war in 1944-1945, offering a long, hard look at the other side of the hill."―Rick Atkinson, author of An Army at Dawn and The Day of Battle

"An excellent historical study of a course of events in need of explication."―New York Journal of Books

"Rückzug is an important book. It is the first serious study to focus on the six-week period from the Operation Dragoon landings on the Mediterranean coast in mid-August and the partial Allied victory at the Falaise pocket. . . . A professional and well-researched assessment of this surprisingly under-examined phase of World War II."―Anthony Beevor, Wall Street Journal

"Extensively documented from German sources, with this English edition edited by retired U.S. Army Major General Zabecki, this superior work is for all serious students of World War II military maneuvers."―Library Journal, starred review

"In Ruckzug, Joachim Ludewig, an official in the German defense ministry, who first published this newly translated study more than twenty years ago, describes the sudden collapse of German resistance in August 1944 and the headlong flight towards the German border... By stopping the story in September 1944, when the new front stabilised along the German and Dutch borders, he is writing a history of German military success and with it the possibility that absolute, unconditional defeat might have been avoided"―London Review of Books

"Ruckzug is a most valuable addition to the historiography of the North-West Europe campaign, giving us a most revealing account of how the Germans managed to snatch salvation out of the jaws of certain defeat. Deeply researched and well written, the book is highly recommended to anyone with an interest in the campaign. Both the author and David Zabecki, the editor, are to be much congratulated."―Journal of Military History

"The translation, documentation, and editing of this new contribution to military studies are uniformly excellent, and Ludewig is to be commended on the value of his work and its accessibility. The study makes fascinating reading and is recommended not only for miliatry collections, but also for general and academic libraries."―Geoffrey Orth, Yearbook of German-American Studies

A competent command level summary with analysis of the fighting in the summer of 1944 in Western Europe.
By Dave Schranck
The author begins his book by stating the premise for writing it. Mr Ludewig believes the campaign in Normandy like in the Ardennes and along the West Wall later in the year has been documented satisfactorily while the events in August and September could be further studied and documented. He also states while there is some coverage of the Allies, the primary focus of this book will be from the German perspective. With these stated parameters, I thought the book was a five star effort. If you're looking for prominent attention on the Allied side or unabridge coverage of the entire last half of 1944 you may be disappointed.

If your main concern is the Allied position you would be better off reading books by Carlo D'Este, Adam Smith, John Prados, Ken Ford, Martin Blumenson for their coverage is more comprehensive in this area. However if you have already read those books and are looking for more on the German side then "Ruckzug" is clearly the book you want.

The book begins by summing up the political and military situation leading up to the Overlord and Dragoon invasions from both sides. The lack of organization and coordination between OB West, its commanders and Berlin is clearly covered. The disruptive influence of Hitler is shown numerous times. His insistence on the offensive and refusal to consider a pullback when it was necessary are well documented. In addition Kluge, Model, Rundstedt, Blaskowitz, Zangen and others are frequently discussed as well. As the story is told you will see that the German field commanders foresaw much of the Allied tactics but due to a lack of men, weapons and fuel or the baring of the use of panzers or of the other restrictions placed on them by Hitler or finally the overwhelming superiority of the Allied Air Force, were unable to respond appropriately or sufficiently in many circumstances.

On the Allied position, important information is covered but just not to the same depth or breadth as the German perspective. The importance of a successful Dragoon Operation and how it could influence the Overlord operation is emphasized as well as the eventual pullback by Army Group G. The securing of several ports along Brittany and the Med is also highlighted. The Allied disaster of not quickly gaining control of the Scheldt and utilizing Antwerp is also given attention. The Falaise Gap is only lightly covered but the author does admit the Allied Commander's lax attention to it cost them a golden opportunity to shorten the war. Errors made by both sides are highlighted. Coverage of Allied Commanders is modest.

In addition to Army Group G coverage the 15th Army north of the Seine in the early days of Normandy as well as the affect of the Allies crossing the Seine in August is also covered well as is the recovery of the rest of Army Group B after crossing the Seine.

Though this is a summary, there are many details like divisions involved, defensive positions, casualties of men and panzers and through it all the author provides reasons and analysis why and how events happened. I would hazard to say that even experienced students may learn some new things on the German position.

The final chapter, the Conclusion ties everything together. Though the Allies had been kept in check for much of June and July, by August the German Armies were on a precipice and were in danger of imploding but with the pullback north of the Seine to the West Wall and with the shortening of the line, the Germans got it together and for the rest of the year would give the Allies a difficult time.

There are also 25 informative general purpose maps that will help your understanding of the coverage. A few pointers are provided throughout the book to direct you to study the proper map that relates with the narrative. There is also a small but excellent photo gallery of key German officers; most photos I've haven't seen before.

Besides a noteworthy story, the author provides an extensive 90 page Notes Section and an impressive Bibliography of mostly primary sources but also a few secondary sources as well. If you're looking for further research, these two sections will be of great help. An Index closes the book.

It seems apparent that Mr Ludewig has studied this sector and time period extensively and delivers an overall noteworthy presentation and analysis, especially from the German side and if that's where your interest lies then you should consider this book.

An excellent new WW2 book
By Daniel S. Palter
The core thesis of this book is that while Normandy through Falaise has been extensively covered in WW2 literature, there does not exist a definitive account of the great pursuit across France that followed, especially from the German POV. This book remedies this in a most excellent fashion. The account is strategic with significant operational detail. A few engagements are handled at the tactical level but mostly this book takes the larger view, concentrating on command decisions, logistics and conflicts between levels of command. The Allied side is covered more in a sense of missed opportunities as the Allies consistently underperform relative to German expectations, especially as regards the failure to exploit the seizure of Antwerp by making the clearing of the Scheldt a priority and allowing the German army task force G to escape from southern France mostly intact. The book also shows that from the end of August into the autumn Hitler sent the bulk of his last callup of divisions west not east. Hitler regarded the Western Front as the decisive sector and allocated his resources accordingly. The book end with the return to positional warfare as the mobile phase of the campaign ended. This is an excellent addition to any WW2 library and has value besides that as a study of higher command in mobile warfare.

Fills a gap in the history of World War II, with minor faults
By G. BILHARTZ
This was a truly enlightening read. I've read countless books on the Allied invasion and this one definitely fills a gap on the subject. Events moved so fast from Operation Cobra, the elimination of the Falaise Pocket, and the Operation Dragoon landings in southern France, that many books effectively recount those events then suddenly appear at the West Wall as if teleported. This is the first book that takes a serious look at the intervening six weeks--and from the German perspective no less. I've often wondered about the fate of the German troops based in the south and southwest of France and have only discovered with this book the amazing story of their withdrawal back to a new defensive line in eastern France. The book does not give an account of the travails of the individual Wehrmacht or Allied soldiers. Rather it is mainly an operational level narrative, and it excels in its telling for a book focused on that level. In Ludewig's telling, the Germans, seasoned by five years of war, including three on the Eastern Front, were definitely the betters of the Allies, even the British. But for missed opportunities and the cautious advances of the Allies, combined with the inevitable negotiating of democratic allies, the Allies just might have won the war by the end of 1944. Ludewig does an excellent job of laying out the opportunities, the perils, and dumb luck on both sides that combined to extend the war another six months.

A few niggles. The book provides two dozen maps, but they are all concentrated in one section, and must constantly be flipped to for reference. They are also at times scaled too big and at times too small for the narrative. Inline maps would be a better solution, and perhaps a few more of them. I've lived in Germany and France for a total of nearly eight years and still had trouble keeping the locations straight. The translation is generally very good but a couple of items were a bit distracting. Contrary to both German grammar and English use of proper names, the book insists on calling Hitler the "führer" instead of the "Führer", even though a German tank is consistently described properly as a "Panzer" (though "Panzers" isn't quite German or English). The book also takes to using the German rather than the native name for some towns, such as Strassburg (Strasbourg) and Lüttich (Liège). I know the difference, but the average American reader will be challenged by the gazetteer variations.

All in all a very useful addition to the history of World War II. I expect it will be a source of future works on the war for its exhaustive use of primary sources, especially from the German side.

A Model for the Christian Life: Hilary of Poitier's Commentary on the Psalms, by Paul C. Burns

The Psalms, used as hymns for liturgy, have also been read as guidance for the spiritual life. Composed between 364 and 367, Hilary of Poitiers' commentary on the Psalms was the last of his writings before his death. In what appears to be a substantial but conventional commentary, Hilary also employs the Psalms to explore three progressive stages of the Christian life―baptism, resurrection, and transformation―then proposes a complex, integrated model for the Christian life. He makes use of cultural and theological resources acquired throughout his education and from his encounters as a Christian bishop in the mid-fourth century.

In this examination of Hilary's treatise, Paul C. Burns discusses the intended audience of Hilary's text and the use of the Psalms by Christians in the fourth century. He identifies Hilary's distinctive perspectives; his dependence on Origen; his Latin theological and exegetical tradition; and the creative directions of Hilary's thought.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Paul C. Burns is associate professor emeritus of religious studies at the University of British Columbia and lecturer at St. Mark's College and Corpus Christi College. He is the author The Christology of Hilary of Poitiers' Commentary on Matthew and editor of Jesus in Twentieth Century Literature, Art, and Movies.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"This work offers the most complete examination of Hilary's mature thought in any language. There are books on Hilary's Trinitarian theology, but none that considers the way Hilary conceives the Christian life, nor how he developed theologically and pastorally after his exile. Although scholars have long had a sense that Hilary was important to the course of Latin theology, this book is the first to suggest how and why he was so important. A first-rate work of scholarship."―Mark Weedman, professor of biblical and historical theology, Crossroads College

Christian Faith and Human Understanding: Studies on the Eucharist, Trinity, and the Human Person, by Robert Sokolowski

In this collection of essays, renowned philosopher Robert Sokolowski illustrates how Christian faith is not an alternative to reason, but rather an enhancement of it. Reflecting on the mysteries of Creation, the Holy Trinity, the Incarnation, and the Eucharist, he examines in his distinctive lucid style the ways in which Christian faith contributes to the understanding of the human person.

The book is divided into four sections. The first directly addresses the relation between faith and understanding, showing how philosophy has an autonomy within Christian theology even as it acknowledges that revelation makes known truths that could not have been reached by reason alone. It also explains how central the doctrine of Creation is to the relation between faith and reason. The rest of the book illustrates particular ways in which reason and faith interact in Christianity.

The second section deals with the mysteries of the Holy Trinity, the Church, and the Eucharist. It shows that Christ is the primary minister of the Eucharist because his words are quoted in its celebration, and it offers a contemporary interpretation of the meaning of transubstantiation. This section also discusses the episcopal teaching office in the Church, and it shows how Christ's words in the gospels, his use of the first-person pronoun, serve to manifest the Holy Trinity.

The third section discusses the human person in the light of Christian faith, exploring what is meant by the human soul, natural law, and personal relationships, as well as the place of political philosophy within revelation. The fourth and final section turns to the relationship between faith and practical reasoning. It discusses Christian aspects in the art and science of medicine, psychoanalysis, and the professions, as well as issues in Catholic higher education, including the place of philosophy in seminary formation.

Robert Sokolowski is Elizabeth Breckenridge Caldwell Professor of Philosophy at The Catholic University of America. The author of eight books and more than 90 articles, Msgr. Sokolowski was awarded the Aquinas Medal by the American Catholic Philosophical Association. His highly respected works have been the subject of two conferences. His books include The God of Faith and Reason and Eucharistic Presence: A Study in the Theology of Disclosure, both published by CUA Press.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"In this collection of essays, a leading American philosopher shows the fruitfulness of phenomenology for Christian philosophy. He illustrates how appearances disclose the reality that comes to light through them and how biblical religion casts added light on the realities known to reason. Applying this method, Sokolowski reflects with rare lucidity on Christian mysteries such as the Eucharist and on mundane pursuits such as medicine, psychoanalysis, and the professions."―Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J.

"This book offers us a series of intense glimpses into the comprehensive vision of a great master on both philosophy and theology. Sokolowski's brilliant account of the blending of reason and faith, while honoring their respective integrities, is nothing short of an offering to the human future, in all its various spheres; the culmination of a lifetime's work of love which, if received in the same spirit, will make that future a better one.―Catherine Pickstock, University of Cambridge

"Christian Faith and Human Understanding is a masterpiece of good sense, clarity, profundity, and accuracy of expression....Sokolowski has a genius for making what otherwise would be abstruse points to become intelligible to ordinary people....[T]his is not merely a profound book, but a very readable book. Any person to whom the book is implicitly addressed in its very subject matter―bishop, priest, seminarian, medical doctor, psychoanalyst, politician, craftsman, engine

An insightful thought provoking book on perennial themes
By Hamilton Armstrong
Msgr. Sokolowski's latest book, and he has written many, brings together a number of previously written articles, duly edited, on a variety of subjects from speculative theology to the understanding of every day conduct. They are all brought together by a brilliantly written introduction which, in itself, is worth the price of the book. Especially helpful to this reader, as a Roman Catholic, are his profound insights into the mysteries of the Eucharist and the Holy Trinity. Although reading these, and the other essays in the book, requires thoughtful attention, I highly recommend this collection to all those seeking a deeper knowledge of their Christian Faith in the light of Human reason.

More than Just a Collection Essays
By Mike Gosman
In the "Introduction" to his collection of essays, Christian Faith and Human Understanding, Professor Sokolowski identifies the subjects and themes that serve to unify each of his book's four sections (pp. 4-5). In this review, I want to highlight an underlying theme that serves to unify the whole book, namely, the theme of distinctions.

There are many ways of approaching Sokolowski's handling of the theme of distinctions. I choose to approach it by way of three distinctions he makes and an account he gives of making distinctions. Because the account makes clear why distinctions are absolutely necessary, I begin with it.

Following Aristotle, Sokolowski explains: "If we wish to say anything at all we must implicitly make a distinction; we must not only posit some sort of sense but also exclude some other sense. Any positive determination involves a marking off from something else. The negation that is involved in a distinction is required as a condition for bringing forward anything positive as a theme for discourse" (p. 65). Sokolowski devotes his whole book to making distinctions of this positive kind; moreover, they derive their positive character from a distinction he makes on the first page of his book. For purposes of identification, I propose to call Sokolowski's opening distinction his first distinction; and, for the same reason, I propose to call the distinction I discuss next, Sokolowski's second distinction.

In his first distinction, Sokolowski distinguishes between what human reason is not, or at least not essentially, and what essentially is. Thus he writes: "Human reason is not just the power to move from one proposition to another; it is not just the ability to argue, infer, and compute. More fundamentally, it is the capacity to let things come to light, to let the intelligibility of things show up for ourselves and others" (p.11). In making this distinction, Sokolowski is doing what he talks about, when (on page 65) he talks about distinctions as necessarily involving a negative and a positive. That is, he is negating (but not discarding) a set of things (i.e. "arguing, inferring, and computing") as failing to define what reason essentially is; and he is also bringing forward a single thing (the uniquely human rational activity of bringing "the intelligibility of things to light)" as a positive "theme for discourse."

Sokolowski second distinction occurs on the penultimate page of his book, where he distinguishes between thinking and speaking "analytically, thoughtfully, and philosophically"; and thinking and speaking "only rhetorically" (p 309). The preceding distinction may be given a specific application by citing the third of Sokolowski's three distinctions.

In his third distinction, Sokolowski distinguishes between "philosophy and other forms of thinking." "All the others," Sokolowski writes, "are partial." That is, all the others mark off a field or area of inguiry for themselves; and within that field or area, they claim sovereignty. "Philosophy, however," Sokolowski concludes, "is the `specialty' that knows no borders (p. 11). In other words, whereas all other forms of human thought and speech undertake to study some part of the whole of things, philosophy alone, at least in Sokolowski's account of it, undertakes to study the whole.

Now, putting together all three of Sokolowski's distinctions leads, I think, to this conclusion. So long as the practitioners in a partial field or area of inquiry continue to think and speak specifically about the things that fall within their specific area of competence, they may be said to think and speak "analytically, thoughtfully" and possibly truthfully as well. (Not even they would say that everything they say is true.) However, as soon as they undertake to generalize the truths they have learned within their particular field or area into truths about the whole, they begin to think and speak "only rhetorically." A host of examples might be cited in support of the preceding statement. I choose to cite only one.

Suppose the thing to be studied is human mind; and suppose as well that human mind's new students define themselves as new, precisely by rejecting everything that has been said about human mind prior to their coming into the world, even including the notion that such a thing as "human mind" exists. Whatever these new students of human mind now insist "human mind" is, their insistence necessarily precedes their investigations of it. But, as it does, so their investigations can only end by confirming what they, in the first place, assumed human mind to be. Hence, when the new students of human mind set up to oppose all the notions of it that preceded their own new one, the best that can be said of them is that the are thinking and speaking "only rhetorically." That is, they are using the (possible) truths of their partial science as available means of persuasion, with a view toward persuading everybody who will listen that everything that has been said about human mind prior to them is absolutely false, and that what they now say about it, at least in respect of what it essentially is, is absolutely true.

I want to close this review by pointing out what I hope its effect will be. My hope is that by making evident the theme of distinctions Sokolowski's book houses, but to which he nowhere explicitly adverts, I will have opened up for his readers a way of reading his book that might not otherwise have occurred to them. For, as I see it, Sokolowski's book can be read, not just as a collection of essays, or even as four blocks of essays grouped round four distinct subjects or themes. It can also be read as a system of distinctions, each one tending toward the same end: the end of bringing to light the intelligibility of things as diverse as Christian faith, human understanding, the human person, natural law, the doctor/patient relation, and the best sort of political order for human beings.

The Life of Blessed Bernard of Tiron, by Geoffrey Grossus

Around 1147 the bishop of Chartres directed Geoffrey Grossus, a monk of Tiron Abbey, to write the life of its founder Bernard of Abbeville (ca. 1050-1116) in an effort to further his canonization. Although Geoffrey Grossus blithely borrowed from other writings on saints' lives to further his hagiographical purpose, he presented an erudite, action-filled, and sympathetic portrait of the ascetic founder of an increasingly prominent and wealthy congregation.

Bernard was a reformed Benedictine monk, abbot of Saint-Cyprien of Poitiers, and claustral prior of its daughter abbey, Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe. Deposed at the instigation of Abbot Hugh of Cluny shortly after his installation in 1100, Bernard traveled to Rome to make a spirited defense of Saint-Cyprien's independence before the papal curia. He alternated cloistered life with unauthorized retreats with Vital of Savigny's hermit community, supporting himself by woodworking and ironwork, and offshore on the pirate-infested Chausey Island. On tours with Vital and Robert of Arbrissel, he risked his life preaching clerical celibacy in Normandy. In old age he founded Tiron Abbey in Perche near Chartres and became known as a healer and visionary.

Although Bernard worked few miracles and was never canonized, he was venerated as a holy man who was deeply involved in many aspects of the religious reformation of the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Tiron expanded into a large congregation under royal patronage with abbeys and priories in modern France and the British Isles, where it preceded the Cistercians by a decade in Wales, Scotland, and on the Southampton Water. Tironian abbeys and priories survived until the English Reformation and the French Revolution.

The first English translation of the Vita Bernardi, this book makes accessible to medieval and religious historians one of the more interesting and lively stories of the twelfth century.

ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR:

Ruth Harwood Cline received her Ph.D. from Georgetown University, where she is a research associate in the department of history. She was formerly a career language officer of the U.S. Department of State.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"[T]ranslations of medieval source materials are incredibly valuable, especially for undergraduate students who do not yet have the language facilities to engage with premodern primary source materials firsthand. For this reason, books like the one under review are always occasions for some celebration. Ruth Cline's translation of Geoffrey Grossus' Life of Bernard of Tiron (written c. 1147) is particularly welcome because it draws attention to an important religious figure, Bernard, Abbot of Tiron (c. 1046-1116). . . . Students will find many memorable tales of adventure in Bernard's eclectic and wayward career. . . . [M]any teachers will find Cline's translation useful in the classroom."―Scott G. Bruce, H-France Reviews

"This translation and edition of the Vita by Ruth Cline has corrected and edited the work of Geoffrey. Her work has not only presented us with a well written monastic source important for monastic historians but also for those monastic texts in opposition to the Clunaic reform. . . . This translation and commentary by Ruth Cline is both important and well done."―Cyprian Davis, O.S.B., American Benedictine Review

"[An] excellent book on Bernard of Tiron. . . . The translation reads fluently but is literal enough to give some feel of the original Latin. . . . Cline's introduction and Geoffrey's text are full of interesting details. . . . Dr. Cline has done justice to Bernard of Tiron, and The Catholic University of America Press has brought to light a very well-produced book." ―Hugh Feiss, OSB, Cistercian Studies Quarterly

Select Orations (Fathers of the Church Patristic Series), by Gregory of Nazianzus

This translation makes available nineteen orations by the fourth-century Cappadocian father Gregory of Nazianzus. Most are appearing here in English for the first time. These homilies span all the phases of Gregory's ecclesiastical career, beginning with his service as a parish priest assisting his father, the elder Gregory, in his hometown of Nazianzus in the early 360s, to his stormy tenure as bishop of Constantinople from 379 to 381, to his subsequent return to Nazianzus and role as interim caretaker of his home church (382-83). Composed in a variety of rhetorical formats such as the lalia and encomium, the sermons treat topics that range from the purely theological to the deeply personal.

Up until now, Gregory has been known primarily for his contributions as a theologian, indifferent to the social and political concerns that consumed his friend Basil. This view will change. It has been due in large measure to the interests and prejudices of the nineteenth-century editors who excluded the sermons translated here from the Select Library of Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers of the Church. This new translation will help the English-speaking reader appreciate just how deeply Gregory was engaged in the social and political issues of his day.

Exemplifying the perfect synthesis of classical and Christian paideia, these homilies will be required reading for anyone interested in late antiquity. The introduction and notes accompanying the translation will assist both the specialist and the general reader as they seek to navigate the complex environment in which Gregory lived and worked.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"[W]ith the appearance of Vinson's volume, for the first time all of the orations have English translations. . . . The works contained in her volume are of great interest." ― Nonna Verna Harrison, St. Vladimir's Theological Quarterly

"[M]ost of these sermons appear here for the first time in an English translation. . . . [R]eading them dose not only provide us with information about a crucial period in the history of the church or about the personal struggle of one of the central figures in that period and not only do we get some glimpses of the concerns of a good pastor in troubled times long past: reading them can inspire to self-reflection and commitment so necessary at all times." ― H. Rikhof, Bijdragen

More great stuff from Augustine
By Rachel Simmons
The table of contents of this collection is as follows:
The Teacher (Introduction by Russell)
The Free Choice of the Will (Introduction by Russell)
Retractions, Book 1, Chapter 9, concerning "The Free Choice of the Will")
Grace and Free Will (Introduction by Russell)
General Index (Russell)
Index of Holy Scripture (Russell)
All of the works are translated by Robert P. Russell, who also wrote a short introduction to each, provided footnotes, and added the two indices. The introductions mostly serve to indicate when and for what purpose the work was written, generally based on Augustine's own comments in his "Retractions", and also the historical significance of the work. Augustine seldom needs an interpreter, and interpretive commentary is therefore brief. The abundant footnotes concern translation issues, scripture references, other references (both to other authors' and Augustine's own works), and occasionally points of interpretation.
The first work in the collection "The Teacher", which was written in the form of a dialogue between Augustine and his son Adeodatus, whose early death may have led to the dialogue's composition. The dialogue does have historical substance behind it, as it does reflect conversations that Augustine and his son actually had.
The subject of "The Teacher" is language, or more properly, signs. The structure of the argument begins with a discussion of words as signs, then moves to consider that words themselves can be the objects of signs, and that signs do not have to be words. Initially, the argument is that the purpose of signs is to teach, but by the end, the argument has moved to stress the active role of the listener in learning and (briefly) of God as the ultimate source of all knowledge. In character, the work is much more philosophical than scriptural.
The second work in the collection is "The Free Choice of the Will", which like "The Teacher" was written in the form of a dialogue. Also like "The Teacher" it is much more philosophical than scriptural in character. The purpose of the work is to defend man's free will with regard to good and evil against the Manichaean view of man as a passive battlefield for the cosmic war between good and evil. The work got him into some trouble as it was later used as a support by Pelagius in his argument for the sufficiency of free will against the necessity of grace. Russell takes pains to document this by footnoting exactly what passages Pelagius cited. Augustine himself devoted space to this subject in his "Retractions" (that chapter is included in this collection) defending that he was not denying grace in this work and that his general position on grace and free will was coherent.
The third work in the collection is "Grace and Free Will", which was written against Pelagius. It argues for the necessity of grace and denies the sufficiency of free will. The form of the work is heavily scriptural. Augustine seeks to demonstrate that the Pelagian position is incompatible with scripture, while at the same time taking pains to avoid erring in the opposite direction - that because grace is necessary, free will does not exist. While Augustine does present a positive account as to how grace and free will can be reconciled, I did not think he presented it nearly as clearly as he did in "Admonition and Grace" (as found in the collection "Fathers of the Church: St. Augustine : Christian Instruction, Admonition and Grace, The Christian Combat, Faith, Hope, and Charity"), a work that I admire enormously.
---
The collection as a whole is interesting in part because it showcases the variety of styles Augustine used in writing: dialogue vs. straight prose and philosophical vs. scriptural, and also because it shows Augustine as a defender of a complex position against oversimplifications in two different directions. Before I read Augustine, I admit that my eyes had glazed over at the thought of reading anything to do with "Manichaeanism" or "Pelagianism" - after all, why should I care about arguments against long-extinct sects? Well, the reason is that a good heresy never dies, it just changes its name and moves to a new address. Far from being a dusty exercise, I found Augustine's writings on these controversies to be very much of current interest and well worth anyone's time.
