Outstanding primer on Kentucky history

James A. Ramage is one of the premier historians on the subject of Kentucky. Therefore, when I ran across an advertisement for his book, co-written with his daughter Andrea Watkins, I was immediately interested. Ramage and Watkins are both professors at Northern Kentucky University. After finishing the book, I was not disappointed. Among the subjects the author covers are Henry Clay, the best known Kentucky name in politics, art, architecture, steamboats, journalism, culture, religion, medicine, slavery, politics and Kentuckians in the civil war. As with any reader, not all these subjects thrilled and interested me, but everything that was presented was presented well.
Not one to read a book very fast, (I usually spend too much time researching what I read & underlining passages) I completed Ramage's presentation, 15 chapters plus an excellent epilogue, in under ten days. The story consumes 347 pages and adds notes, a bibliography, an index and 24 pages of excellent illustrations, for a total of 445 pages.
While reading I found many things I had not found in other histories. The focus of the book is, as the magazine article that caught my attention says, "Kentucky's early image as a leader to the rest of the nation, its innovative residents, and its reputation of strength." Not originally being from Kentucky but born & reared in Texas, I was fascinated by the great history of the state in which I now reside.
I highly recommend "Kentucky Rising..." as worth every minute of time I spent with it, and give it 5 stars.

Knowing Dr. Ramage, I can say that he is a valuable source of Kentucky history. He has written many scholarly books on the subject.
