Letters: 1-50 (Fathers of the Church Patristic Series), by Cyril of Alexandria

St. Cyril, Patriarch of Alexandria for thirty-two years in the first half of the fifth century, was a great champion of the faith against heresy; he opposed Novatianism, Neoplatonism, and Judaism. His principal struggle, however, was with Nestorius, Patriarch of Constantinople. Cyril vehemently defended the application of the word Theotokos, which means 'Godbearer', to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Nestorius, representative of the Antiochene theological school, held that the Blessed Virgin was the mother only of the humanity of Christ. This great Christological controversy and the Council of Ephesus that was convened in 431 to resolve it provide the subject matter for the entire collection of letters in this volume. Letter 1 is Cyril's response to a group of monks under his jurisdiction who ask for guidance in the Nestorian debate. His remarks take us straight to the heart of the matter: "Therefore, I am amazed if some should question at all whether the Holy Virgin should be called the Mother of God." Through Letter 32 we are involved with the controversy and its development down to and including the Council of Ephesus. Letter 4, addressed to Nestorius, has been called the dogmatic letter, and the Council of Ephesus approved it as maintaining the teaching of Nicaea. Letter 17 is considered an epitome of Cyril's faith. Along with twelve anathemas it condemned Nestorius in the name of the synod convened by Pope Celestine in Rome and later was added to the Acts of the Council of Ephesus Letters 33 to 50 concern the question of John, Bishop of Antioch and a personal friend of Cyril through a longstanding correspondence. When John and his bishops arrived at Ephesus, they set up a rival council and issued a decree of deposition and excommunication against Cyril and Memnon, Bishop of Ephesus. After the Council of Ephesus it was Cyril's task to reconcile the Antiochene bishops who had formed the Conciliabulum with John to restore peace to the Churches in the East. Letter 39 reveals his joy in achieving this reconciliation and in regaining his friendship with John. Together with Letters 4 and 17, Letter 39 has been called ecumenical. Letter 41 is exegetically important for its long discussion of the work "scapegoat," and Letter 45, which contains Cyril's famous formula, for it's doctrinal and theological content.

Breathtaking...
By James
This is volume one in a two volume set containing the letters of St Cyril of Alexandria. It is well put together and even includes some letters written to him from others, which is nice for the reader so we can get some context to his words. I found this to be a breathtaking insight into the mind of an often misunderstood man who is often misrepresented as something that he is not. These letters clearly demonstrate his confidence in his beliefs, yet his patience and understanding for those that opposed him. This set is highly recommended for any student of history.

The Life and Pontificate of Pope Pius XII: Between History and Controversy, by Frank J. Coppa

Eugenio Pacelli, Pope Pius XII, is one of the most studied but least understood popes of the twentieth century while his pontificate remains the most turbulent and controversial. Although there is a general consensus that he faced serious problems during his tenure―fascist aggression, the Second World War, the Nazi genocide of the Jews, the march of communism, and the Cold War―there is disagreement on his response to these developments. Applauded by some as an "apostle for peace" for his attempt to prevent the outbreak of war, he has been denounced by others as an "advocate of appeasement" for this same effort. Praised by both Christian and Jews for his "Crusade of Charity" during the war, he was denounced by many for his "silence" during the Holocaust. These conflicting interpretations, dubbed the Pius Wars, are often narrow in focus, lack objectivity, and have shed more heat than light.

Written by one of the foremost historians of Pius XII, the present biographical study, unlike the greater part of the vast and growing historiography of Pope Pius XII, is a balanced and nonreactive account of his life and times. Its focus is not on the pope's silence during the Holocaust, though it does address the issue in a historical and objective framework. This is a biography of the man as well as the pope. It probes the roots of his traditionalism and legalism, his approach to modernity and reformism in Church and society, and the influences behind his policies and actions.

This book is the first biography of Eugenio Pacelli to appear in English since the opening of the papers of the pontificate of Pius XI (1922-1939), in which Pacelli served as nuncio to Germany and secretary of state, along with the publication of the memories of figures close to Papa Pacelli.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"This book adds a great deal to what we currently know about this most written about pope. Frank Coppa introduces a number of principles which need to be discussed by experts and also by biographers of this pope, most importantly the concepts of papal impartiality and anti-Judaism as related to Pope Pius XII."―Charles R. Gallagher, S.J., assistant professor of history, Boston College

"This is a balanced and highly nuanced biography of Eugenio Pacelli that examines the whole life and times of the man. Frank Coppa has examined the considerable, publicly available, historical record on Pacelli, placed the war years and the Holocaust in the broader scope of Pius XII's life, and brought much needed attention to the oft-neglected pre-1939 and post-1945 years of this complex, enigmatic and intriguing man."―Paul O'Shea, co-director of the Australian Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Sydney

"These books approach the wartime pontiff with such a clear mastery of the arguments that both Pius's supporters and his denigrators will find it difficult in the future to expect any serious student to accept the hoary myths that have clouded or exalted that pontiff's reputation . . . Coppa opens both books with the statement that Pius is the most studied but least understood of modern pontiffs. His books will go a long way toward changing that perception." ―The Catholic Historical Review

Interesting and easy to read biography.
By A. J. D. Gillies
This is a very interesting biography which is easy to read. I think that the author has attempted to be as objective as possible under difficult circumstances , in that the Vatican has not released all the relevant information as yet. I do not know enough about the subject to offer criticism of the work but to me it appears to be a reasonably scholarly publication.

Reflections on Constitutional Law, by George Anastaplo

Constitutional scholar George Anastaplo believes that many judges and lawyers draw upon a skimpy, if not simply unreliable, knowledge of history. He proposes that in order to write reliable opinions, these men and women must have a deeper understanding of the enduring principles upon which the law naturally tends to draw. In the study of constitutional law, Anastaplo argues that it is more important to weigh what the Supreme Court has said and how that is said―what considerations it weighed and how―than it is to know what it is recorded that the Court "decided."

In Reflections on Constitutional Law, Anastaplo makes the case for a renewed focus on a now often-overlooked aspect of the study of law. He emphasizes the continuing significance and importance of the Constitution by thoroughly examining the most important influences on the American constitutional system, including the Magna Carta and the Declaration of Independence.

The Third Spring: G.K. Chesterton, Graham Greene, Christopher Dawson, and David Jones, by Adam Schwartz

For most of modern history, Roman Catholics in Britain were a "rejected minority," facing hostility and estrangement from a culture increasingly at odds with traditional Christianity. Yet British Catholicism underwent a remarkable intellectual and literary renewal, especially in the twentieth century, drawing a disproportionate number of the age's leading minds into its ranks. The Third Spring unravels this paradox of a renascent Catholic culture within a post-Christian society. It does so through detailed profiles of the spiritual journeys and religious and cultural beliefs of four seminal members of that twentieth-century revival: G. K. Chesterton, Graham Greene, Christopher Dawson, and David Jones.

Although these four authors came from different backgrounds and wrote primarily in different genres, each converted to Roman Catholicism as an adult and made his new faith the foundation of his intellectual and artistic work. All of them judged the Church to be the last corporate voice of orthodox Christianity in a hitherto unmatched irreligious climate of opinion; and they concluded that the Roman Catholic vision of human nature, thought, history, and art was truer and richer than proposed by prevailing secularism. They thus built on the nineteenth-century "Second Spring" of British Catholicism proclaimed by John Henry Newman to create a fresh assertion of Roman Catholicism, one suited to an era of unprecedented unbelief: a Third Spring.

This book is the first detailed examination of these four authors as part of a Roman Catholic, counter-modern community of discourse. It is informed by extensive research in the writers' works, scholarship on them, and their personal papers. This study is also distinguished by its careful attention to the authors' cultural and religious contexts, and to the psychology and theology of conversion. It will therefore deepen understanding, and correct some misconceptions, of each man's spiritual development and his thought, while revealing the twentieth-century Catholic literary revival to be a distinct movement in both British and Roman Catholic thought.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Adam Schwartz is Assistant Professor of History at Christendom College and author of numerous reviews and articles in several scholarly journals. Schwartz serves on the Board of Directors of the American Chesterton Society.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK

"The work is a monumental achievement of research and sensitive literary criticism, combined with an acute awareness of the uniqueness of the individual conversion story. This book sheds new light on the subject and brings achievements, and failures, of the Third Spring into sharp relief."―Gerald J. Russello, Crisis

"[A]n inviting introduction to figures of continuing interest."― First Things

"Part biography and part literary criticism, the book is at its best when exploring how the conversion experiences of its subjects influenced their critiques of the spirit of their age. . . . Schwartz urges that the challenge these men mounted should inspire us all to follow suit. His case is compelling."―Steve Weatherbe, National Catholic Register

"The Third Spring is an elegantly written, carefully researched, and erudite exposition of some of the most seminal voices in British Catholic thought."―Jay P. Corrin, Catholic Historical Review

"Schwartz's case is lucid, well-researched, and convincing. . . . The Third Spring should find broad appeal and is worthy of serious attention."―Clark M. Brittain, Church History

"The pleasure of this book is that in addition to all that it adds to our knowledge of these writers (which for most of us will be monumental) it both deepens and propels our own understanding of the faith and tacitly challenges us about what role we will play in a post-Christia

Review

“A monumental achievement of research and sensitive literary criticism,
combined with an acute awareness of the uniqueness of the individual
conversion story.”―Crisis

“Part biography and part literary criticism, the book is at its best when
exploring how the conversion experiences of its subjects influenced
their critiques of the spirit of their age. . . .”―National Catholic Register

“An elegantly written, carefully researched, and erudite exposition of
some of the most seminal voices in British Catholic thought.”―Catholic
Historical Review

“Schwartz’s comparative analysis adds a great deal to our understanding
of these four figures.”―American Historical Review

“A remarkable, indeed a staggering book. Each of the four sections, on
Chesterton, Greene, Dawson, and Jones, taken alone, would have made
it worthwhile. Taken together, they offer an illuminating analysis of the
vigorous Catholic revival that took place in Britain during the early and
middle years of the twentieth century. . . . [A] brilliant study.”―Modern
Age

Before Lewis and Tolkien
By Gord Wilson
Having just heard Adam Schwartz at the 25th Annual Chesterton Conference in St. Paul, Minnesota, I couldn't wait to get hold of this book. Anyone who is waiting to get it is likely holding off because of the daunting price tag. Absolutely tempted to wait for the paperback, I nevertheless hold that this book is long-needed and occupies a unique niche and that readers interested in these topics will find it well worth the coin.

This is an academic book and probably could be used as a textbook (it's priced like one). That means it's scrupulously researched with long bibliographies and copious footnotes, as against the popular biography meant for casual reading. We need both kinds, but let me illustrate what I think is the difference. A popular biography tries to interest casual readers in the topic, saying something like, "Tolkien is the author of the century." An academic biography tries to justify its existence saying something like, "Amid the flood of Tolkien scholarship, this book satisfies a unique and long-felt need." Absolutely the opposite approach.

For that reason I suggest skipping the introduction to this book (or reading it later), which is entirely concerned with justifying its existence and placing it in a niche of literary biography. But start with the Chesterton chapter (chapter one) and the tone instantly changes from pedantic to winsome as Adam Schwartz winningly holds forth. His thesis that Chesterton's writing was shaped by an early aesthetic and spiritual crisis in art school is not a unique one, it's also handled in the light, brief overview by Peters, The Christian Imagination, but this is probably the first time it's been defended as a thesis.

Chesterton is the best known of the four authors considered in the book, the others being writer Graham Greene (who everyone has heard of but no one has read), historian Christopher Dawson and poet David Jones. Schwartz contends that they can all be considered together as British converts to Roman Catholicism in what he calls the Third Spring, the Second Spring being the earlier conversion of Newman, which may be said to mark the beginning of a British literary revival.

Needless to say this period and these authors are nearly unknown to most readers. Since this volume has as much reading as four short biographies, it can be considered four books averaging out at about $15 each. The value of this volume for libraries or research is a given, but I would also suggest that readers interested in literary biography or history will enjoy this engrossing and engaging read and discovering Adam Schwartz.

Counter-Cultural Revolutionaries
By Tidewater
This is an amazing work. Somehow, Adam Schwartz, the author, has contrived to write interesting narratives about the details of the spiritual journeys of four English Roman Catholic converts. First, the amount of careful research is stunning. Second, Schwartz's ability to conflate myriad personal details, plus supporting examples in their ouevres, into a believable trajectory of conversion is nothing short of miraculous.

Lessons for today abound, but what is most impressive is the utter seriousness with which the four converts--Chesterton, Greene, Dawson and Jones--took their time on earth. Seemingly not a wasted minute for any of them.

These men were not grim, by any means, just serious. A real antidote for the near total lack of seriousness of today. Who, for example. would read, and then critique, the Summa Theologica, St. John of the Cross, etc.?

This book is worth every penny.

A look at a historic period that reads like today's news!
By Steve Benedict
The period covered by this book is a fascinating one: Christendom had decayed through division, compromise, and skepticism, and the time had come for modernism (or whatever term you prefer) to show itself openly. It's funny, we thought "free love" was a new term in the 1960's, but it was already an old fashioned term by then. Reading about this period is like reading about today: and the warnings issued then are unheeded warnings just as applicable now.

Although Dr. Schwartz is an academic, this is a well written, readable, and fascinating book. I don't mean to imply that this is light, beach reading: these are complex issues, but Dr. Schwartz makes them accessible and interesting. These writers fought like lions against the tide, and there were many conversions--many more than there are now using current approaches. It is time to revive their memory!

Animating Space: From Mickey to WALL-E, by J.P. Telotte

Animators work within a strictly defined, limited space that requires difficult artistic decisions. The blank frame presents a dilemma for all animators, and the decision of what to include and leave out raises important questions about artistry, authorship, and cultural influence. In Animating Space: From Mickey to WALL-E, renowned scholar J. P. Telotte explores how animation has confronted the blank template, and how responses to that confrontation have changed. Focusing on American animation, Telotte tracks the development of animation in line with changing cultural attitudes toward space and examines innovations that elevated the medium from a novelty to a fully realized art form. From Winsor McCay and the Fleischer brothers to the Walt Disney Company, Warner Bros., and Pixar Studios, Animating Space explores the contributions of those who invented animation, those who refined it, and those who, in the current digital age, are using it to redefine the very possibilities of cinema.

From the Inside Flap

With skyrocketing gas prices, an economic recession, and the developing presence of chemically altered food, the state of our planet is a growing concern. Going "green" and organic are two of the newest trends intended to decrease our negative impact on the environment and reverse existing damage. The Agrarian Vision: Sustainability and Environmental Ethics explores the significance of agrarian philosophy for modern agriculture and our transition to a sustainable society.

While sustainability remains a national and global concern, many "environmentally committed" individuals do not identify any connection with agrarian ideals. The Agrarian Vision strives to change that perception, particularly in the United States. Paul B. Thompson argues that a philosophy of sustainability requires superior logic, informed by moral and political philosophies, as well as by the environmental philosophy that was once expressed in connection with farming. Internationally regarded as a leading expert in the fields of environmental science and agrarian philosophy, Thompson covers a variety of issues, including ethics, environmental philosophy, food and community, public policy, and agrarian life. His work draws on contemporary and historical scholarship, outlining the best path for sustainability in the modern world.

The Agrarian Vision first offers a historical perspective on sustainability and the debates that have formed over the last 100 years and concludes with modern theories of sustainability and agrarian thought. Challenging us to change how we live to create a sustainable environment way of life, The Agrarian Vision demonstrates that in order to change the world, we must first change ourselves.

The Re-Imagined Text: Shakespeare, Adaptation, and Eighteenth-Century Literary Theory, by Jean I. Marsden

Shakespeare's plays were not always the inviolable texts they are almost universally considered to be today. The Restoration and eighteenth century committed what many critics view as one of the most subversive acts in literary history―the rewriting and restructuring of Shakespeare's plays.

Many of us are familiar with Nahum Tate's "audacious" adaptation of King Lear with its resoundingly happy ending, but Tate was only one of a score of playwrights who adapted Shakespeare's plays. Between 1660 and 1777, more than fifty adaptations appeared in print and on the stage, works in which playwrights augmented, substantially cut, or completely rewrote the original plays. The plays were staged with new characters, new scenes, new endings, and, underlying all this novelty, new words.

Why did this happen? And why, in the later eighteenth century, did it stop? These questions have serious implications regarding both the aesthetics of the literary text and its treatment, for the adaptations manifest the period's perceptions of Shakespeare. As such, they demonstrate an important evolution in the definition of poetic language, and in the idea of what constitutes a literary work.

In The Re-Imagined Text, Jean I. Marsden examines both the adaptations and the network of literary theory that surrounds them, thereby exploring the problems of textual sanctity and of the author's relationship to the text. As she demonstrates, Shakespeare's works, and English literature in general, came to be defined by their words rather than by the plots and morality on which the older aesthetic theory focused―a clear step toward our modern concern for the word and its varying levels of signification.

The Eyes of Faith: The Sense of the Faithful and the Church's Reception of Revelation, by Ormond Rush

Winner of the 2010 Lynlea Rodger Australia Theological Form (ATF) Press Theological Book Prize

The Eyes of Faith presents a systematic theology of the sense of the faithful (sensus fidelium) and shows the fundamental and necessary interrelationship between sensus fidelium, tradition, Scripture, theology, and the magisterium. Ormond Rush provides fresh perspectives on a number of issues. He proposes that tradition and Scripture are the products of the sensus fidelium and that the inspiration of Scripture is best understood in terms of the Holy Spirit working through the sensus fidelium.

In addressing the role of the sensus fidei in the lives of individual believers, the book provides a unique approach to the way Christians make sense of their faith within the diverse contexts of daily life. It shows how the imaginative capacity of the sensus fidei forms a foundational notion for understanding the diversity of spiritualities, inculturations, and contextualizations of the Gospel in the history of the church up to the present. This ecclesial activity of interpreting the Christ event through the sensus fidelium enables the church to proclaim the Gospel in new times and cultures throughout history.

The Eyes of Faith proposes that, for an effective teaching of the faith to contemporary Christians, the distinctive roles of the magisterium and of theology must be conceived primarily in terms of, and in relationship to, the ecclesial Spirit-given capacity of the sensus fidelium.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Ormond Rush is lecturer of theology and former president of St. Paul's Theological College in Banyo, Australia, and is president of the Australian Catholic Theological Association. He is the author of Still Interpreting Vatican II: Some Hermeneutical Principles and The Reception of Doctrine: An Appropriation of Hans Robert Jauss' Reception Aesthetics and Literary Hermeneutics.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"In addition to its internal argumentation, the book's extensive footnotes, Scriptural references, and Church documents will make it a tremendously valuable tool for advanced researchers in several theological areas, including pneumatology, ecclesiology, Scripture studies, and hemeneutics. . . . Highly recommended." ― C. A. Montevecchio, Choice

"Some works of scholarship stand out, providing a point of reference and showing the way forward. Orm Rush's study is in this class, and it is not surprising that its first release by CUA Press is a splendid hardback volume. This work makes a significant contribution to Catholic Theology." ― Rev. John Thornhill SM, The Australasian Catholic Record

"Rush provides a theologically perceptive panorama of the sensus fidelium at work in the church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. In addition to offering numerous insights―usually beneficial and sometimes provocative―Rush's study is extraordinarily well-researched. . . . [T]his volume is an outstandingly creative and comprehensive theological study of the grace of the Holy Spirit acting through the sensus fidelium in the reception of revelation in the church."―John Ford C.S.C., Theological Studies

"Rush has here provided us with a sophisticated study of theological hermeneutics, as well as a foundational work in ecclesiology."―Lawrence S. Cunningham, Commonweal

"This detailed and well-argued book explores the phenomenon of reception in both the Bible and in contemporary Roman Catholic tradition. . . . An insightful study for those interested in the newest wave of Roman Catholic dogmatic theology, which tends to draw deeply from biblical sources as well as Vatican teaching, this book genuinely advances discussions of the doctrine of reception." ―Aaron Klink, Religious Studies Review

As someone whose hope for a renewed Church was born at Vatican II but who has seen that hope frustrated in so many ways since then, I see this book as moving hope forward in a major way. It should be read, discussed and taught in every parish, university and seminary.
Ormond Rush presents a clear, deeply thought out, very readable, systemic theology of the sensus fidei, the sense of the faith, by which the People of God receive, understand, interpret and apply revelation. While he clearly points out that the sensus fidei applies to every member of the Church, from the laity to the pope, I focused especially on its meaning for the laity, too many of whom still operate within a mindset that turns them away from their own, personal experience of the faith. Sadly, others who are sensitive to the sensus fidei, and the sensus fidei fidelium--the sense of faith of the whole faithful--are among the disillusioned because they feel that their faith experience is not being listened to by Church authorities.
As Rush notes, while Vatican II said that the laity have the right and sometimes the duty to make their opinions known on matters which pertain to the good of the Church, and while Pope John Paul II wrote that the teaching authority should listen more widely to the laity, the mechanisms for discussing and sharing the sense of the faith are still not sufficiently set up. This situation is made worse, in my view, by the Medieval imperial mindset within which many bishops and pastors still operate.
Rush clearly explains the deep truth of the whole Church's reception of the one, ever new, perennial revelation of God in and through Jesus Christ. He does it in a way that confirms the Church's hierarchical authority structure, while showing how the laity's sense of the faith contributes to the Church's teaching authority.
I especially appreciate how he shows that the whole People of God are what I call, "everyday mystics," in that they are able to discern, understand and interpret revelation according to their own age, race, gender, culture, language, etc., and also how they are called to share in Christ's prophetic office by applying what they discern--within the whole sensus fidelium--in their everyday lives in today's society. His explanation of the eight characteristics of the sensus fidei, and the four ways the laity contribute to the life and mission of the Church, is a rich resource for helping the laity grow up spiritually in today's society and culture, so they can more effectively make their essential contribution to the formal judgment and official formulation of Church understanding and teaching.
Very importantly, Rush openly faces the nagging problem of authoritative pronouncements that the laity accept as legal but do not de facto accept in their daily lives. Further, he included "lapsed" and disaffected Catholics, who in some places form a majority of Catholics, as people to be listened to by Church authorities. And he reaches out ecumenically to those outside the Roman Catholic community.
This book offer hope to Catholics and others, that the Church can move forward in the renewal of itself and in the salvific contribution to our society and culture that Vatican II envisioned.

During the 1960s, Wilder continued to direct and produce controversial comedies, including Kiss Me, Stupid (1964) and The Apartment (1960), which won Oscars for best picture and director. This definitive biography reveals that Wilder was, and remains, one of the most influential directors in filmmaking.

From the Inside Flap

Although his career spanned fifty years and included more than fifty films, Austrian-American film director Billy Wilder (1906--2002) may be best known for the legendary shot of Marilyn Monroe's dress billowing over a subway grating in The Seven Year Itch (1955). This "shot seen round the world" is representative not only of Hollywood's golden era of cinema but also of one of its most prolific and brilliant directors. Wilder, whose filmography includes such classics as Sunset Boulevard (1950), Sabrina (1954), Witness for the Prosecution (1957), and Some Like It Hot (1959), is often remembered for his versatility, biting wit, and passion for challenging social and moral conventions.

Author Gene D. Phillips departs from the traditional biography in Some Like It Wilder: The Life and Controversial Films of Billy Wilder, offering new insights into the acclaimed director's professional and private life. In preparation for the book, Phillips conducted personal interviews with Wilder and other key players from the legendary director's life and times. Phillips's unique combination of analysis and biographical detail brings Wilder to life, as both an artist and man.

Phillips traces Wilder's path from Berlin, where he worked as a scriptwriter for one of the city's largest studios, to Hollywood, where he would quickly establish himself as a premier film director. Forming a partnership with writer-producer Charles Brackett, Wilder directed the classic films Five Graves to Cairo (1943), Double Indemnity (1945), and The Lost Weekend (1945), which earned Academy Awards for best picture, best director, and best screenplay. During the 1960s, Wilder continued to direct and produce controversial comedies, including Kiss Me Stupid (1964) and The Apartment (1960). The Apartment brought Wilder another round of Oscars for best picture, best director, and best screenplay.

Wilder's maverick approach and independent artistic vision pushed boundaries and ensured his legacy as one of the Hollywood greats. Sharply written, Some Like It Wilder serves as a comprehensive companion to Wilder's films, offering a personalized and heartfelt account of the life and genius of this compelling director.

The Banana Wars: An Inner History of American Empire 1900-1934, by Lester D. Langley

The Banana Wars offers a sweeping panorama of America's tropical empire in the age spanned by the two Roosevelts and a detailed narrative of United States military intervention in the Caribbean and Mexico. From the perspective of the Americans involved, the empire carved out by the banana warriors was a domain of bickering Latin American politicians, warring tropical countries, and lawless societies that the American military-army, navy, and marines-had been dispatched to police and tutor. Beginning with the Cuban experience, Langley examines the motives and consequences of two military occupations and the impact of those interventions on a professedly antimilitaristic American government and on its colonial agents in the Caribbean, the American military. The result of the Cuban experience, Langley argues, was reinforcement of the view that the American people did not readily accept prolonged military occupation of Caribbean countries. In Nicaragua and Mexico, from 1909 to 1915, where economic and diplomatic pressures failed to bring the results desired in Washington, the American military became the political arbiters; in Hispaniola, bluejackets and marines took on the task of civilizing the tropics. In the late 1920s, with an imperial force largely of marines, the American military waged its last banana war in Nicaragua against a guerrilla leader named Augusto C. Sandino. Langley not only narrates the history of America's tropical empire, but fleshes out the personalities of this imperial era-Leonard Wood and Fred Funston, U.S. Army, who left their mark on Cuba and Vera Cruz; William F. Fullam and William Banks Caperton, U.S. Navy, who carried out their missions imbued with old-school beliefs about their role as policemen in disorderly places; Smedley Butler and L.W.T. Waller, Sr., U.S.M.C., who left the most lasting imprint of American empire; and dozens of Caribbean and Mexican political figures caught up in America's tropical experiment. Finally, the author speaks to current debates about unrest and conflict in the Caribbean with some disturbing reminders about earlier American experiences.
