The Eyes of Faith: The Sense of the Faithful and the Church's Reception of Revelation, by Ormond Rush

Winner of the 2010 Lynlea Rodger Australia Theological Form (ATF) Press Theological Book Prize

The Eyes of Faith presents a systematic theology of the sense of the faithful (sensus fidelium) and shows the fundamental and necessary interrelationship between sensus fidelium, tradition, Scripture, theology, and the magisterium. Ormond Rush provides fresh perspectives on a number of issues. He proposes that tradition and Scripture are the products of the sensus fidelium and that the inspiration of Scripture is best understood in terms of the Holy Spirit working through the sensus fidelium.

In addressing the role of the sensus fidei in the lives of individual believers, the book provides a unique approach to the way Christians make sense of their faith within the diverse contexts of daily life. It shows how the imaginative capacity of the sensus fidei forms a foundational notion for understanding the diversity of spiritualities, inculturations, and contextualizations of the Gospel in the history of the church up to the present. This ecclesial activity of interpreting the Christ event through the sensus fidelium enables the church to proclaim the Gospel in new times and cultures throughout history.

The Eyes of Faith proposes that, for an effective teaching of the faith to contemporary Christians, the distinctive roles of the magisterium and of theology must be conceived primarily in terms of, and in relationship to, the ecclesial Spirit-given capacity of the sensus fidelium.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"In addition to its internal argumentation, the book's extensive footnotes, Scriptural references, and Church documents will make it a tremendously valuable tool for advanced researchers in several theological areas, including pneumatology, ecclesiology, Scripture studies, and hemeneutics. . . . Highly recommended." ― C. A. Montevecchio, Choice

"Some works of scholarship stand out, providing a point of reference and showing the way forward. Orm Rush's study is in this class, and it is not surprising that its first release by CUA Press is a splendid hardback volume. This work makes a significant contribution to Catholic Theology." ― Rev. John Thornhill SM, The Australasian Catholic Record

"Rush provides a theologically perceptive panorama of the sensus fidelium at work in the church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. In addition to offering numerous insights―usually beneficial and sometimes provocative―Rush's study is extraordinarily well-researched. . . . [T]his volume is an outstandingly creative and comprehensive theological study of the grace of the Holy Spirit acting through the sensus fidelium in the reception of revelation in the church."―John Ford C.S.C., Theological Studies

"Rush has here provided us with a sophisticated study of theological hermeneutics, as well as a foundational work in ecclesiology."―Lawrence S. Cunningham, Commonweal

"This detailed and well-argued book explores the phenomenon of reception in both the Bible and in contemporary Roman Catholic tradition. . . . An insightful study for those interested in the newest wave of Roman Catholic dogmatic theology, which tends to draw deeply from biblical sources as well as Vatican teaching, this book genuinely advances discussions of the doctrine of reception." ―Aaron Klink, Religious Studies Review

Clarity, Depth and Hope
By Wonder
As someone whose hope for a renewed Church was born at Vatican II but who has seen that hope frustrated in so many ways since then, I see this book as moving hope forward in a major way. It should be read, discussed and taught in every parish, university and seminary.
Ormond Rush presents a clear, deeply thought out, very readable, systemic theology of the sensus fidei, the sense of the faith, by which the People of God receive, understand, interpret and apply revelation. While he clearly points out that the sensus fidei applies to every member of the Church, from the laity to the pope, I focused especially on its meaning for the laity, too many of whom still operate within a mindset that turns them away from their own, personal experience of the faith. Sadly, others who are sensitive to the sensus fidei, and the sensus fidei fidelium--the sense of faith of the whole faithful--are among the disillusioned because they feel that their faith experience is not being listened to by Church authorities.
As Rush notes, while Vatican II said that the laity have the right and sometimes the duty to make their opinions known on matters which pertain to the good of the Church, and while Pope John Paul II wrote that the teaching authority should listen more widely to the laity, the mechanisms for discussing and sharing the sense of the faith are still not sufficiently set up. This situation is made worse, in my view, by the Medieval imperial mindset within which many bishops and pastors still operate.
Rush clearly explains the deep truth of the whole Church's reception of the one, ever new, perennial revelation of God in and through Jesus Christ. He does it in a way that confirms the Church's hierarchical authority structure, while showing how the laity's sense of the faith contributes to the Church's teaching authority.
I especially appreciate how he shows that the whole People of God are what I call, "everyday mystics," in that they are able to discern, understand and interpret revelation according to their own age, race, gender, culture, language, etc., and also how they are called to share in Christ's prophetic office by applying what they discern--within the whole sensus fidelium--in their everyday lives in today's society. His explanation of the eight characteristics of the sensus fidei, and the four ways the laity contribute to the life and mission of the Church, is a rich resource for helping the laity grow up spiritually in today's society and culture, so they can more effectively make their essential contribution to the formal judgment and official formulation of Church understanding and teaching.
Very importantly, Rush openly faces the nagging problem of authoritative pronouncements that the laity accept as legal but do not de facto accept in their daily lives. Further, he included "lapsed" and disaffected Catholics, who in some places form a majority of Catholics, as people to be listened to by Church authorities. And he reaches out ecumenically to those outside the Roman Catholic community.
This book offer hope to Catholics and others, that the Church can move forward in the renewal of itself and in the salvific contribution to our society and culture that Vatican II envisioned.
