Origen: Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans Books 1-5 (Fathers of the Church) (Bk. 1-5), by Origen

Origen of Alexandria's "Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans" is the oldest extant commentary on Romans. This volume presents a translation of the commentary from Latin. Origen's exegesis predates the controversy between Augustine and Pelagius by 170 years and opposes Gnostic interpretations of Paul which is one of its important characteristics. Above all Origen defends the Church against the "doctrine of natures" - the belief that all human beings are born with unalterable natures, either good or evil, and thus bound for either salvation or damnation, and that their conduct in life cannot alter their destiny. He refutes this teaching, showing that freedom of will abides in rational beings. Provoked by Marcion's repudiation of the Old Testament, Origen emphasizes the harmony between Gospel and Law. He highlights as one of Paul's main themes in Romans the transfer of religion from Judaism to Christianity, from the letter to the spirit, in terms both of salvation history and of the transformation of the individual. Origen claims that the key to unlocking Romans is understanding Paul's use of homonyms with divergent meanings.

Origen as a Biblical Theologian
By A Customer
This is the first English translation of Origen's most important work of exegesis, his Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans. The translation is of Rufinus's Latin version of the original Greek work. It is Origen's longest and possibly most important work, his only commentary to survive in a coherent form from beginning to end. Among other things what strikes the reader is Origen's amazing, nearly word-perfect knowledge of the Old and New Testaments. Many of his insights seem to penetrate to the heart of the apostle and his general understanding of Romans seems to be correct. Origen rightly sees that Romans is not so much Paul's attempt to dethrone human merit or to teach a doctrine of predestination but rather the Epistle is concerned with the question of the relation of Jews and Gentiles in the Church, in light of the coming of Christ. Origen perceptively observes that Paul is concerned with the transfer of religion from Judaism to Christianity, from the letter to the Spirit, from shadows to reality, both in terms of salvation history and in terms of the transformation of the individual. All of this comes to fruition through the Incarnation, death and resurrection of the Son of God. Moreover, Origen rightly sees that Paul was on the side of freedom of the will, not determinism and that Paul's doctrine of justification entails the equal necessity of faith and good works in the salvation process. This commentary is an extremely interesting read and hopefully it will have a good reception in the English-speaking world.

Abraham Lincoln, Esq.: The Legal Career of America's Greatest PresidentFrom Brand: The University Press of Kentucky

As our nation's most beloved and recognizable president, Abraham Lincoln is best known for the Emancipation Proclamation and for guiding our country through the Civil War. But before he took the oath of office, Lincoln practiced law for nearly twenty-five years in the Illinois courts. Abraham Lincoln, Esq.: The Legal Career of America's Greatest President examines Lincoln's law practice and the effect it had on his presidency and the country.

Editors Roger Billings and Frank J. Williams, along with a notable list of contributors, examine Lincoln's career as a general-practice attorney, looking both at his work in Illinois and at the time he spent in Washington. Each chapter offers an expansive look at Lincoln's legal mind and covers diverse topics such as Lincoln's legal writing, ethics, the Constitution, and international law. Abraham Lincoln, Esq. emphasizes this often overlooked period in Lincoln's career and sheds light on Lincoln's life before he became our sixteenth president.

Lincoln the lawyer
By James W. Durney
Lore has Lincoln as a country lawyer riding the circuit. He wins cases by charming the jury with stories and leading witnesses step by step to where he wants them.
Success depends more on his personality and people skills than legal abilities.
This is a comfortable image of Lincoln as a lawyer, likable defending the "little man" and fighting the "system".
Others like to show Lincoln as the ultimate corporation lawyer. A champion of the railroads, Lincoln won their cases against the people, earning a fortune in fees.

In the first essay, Harold Holzer addresses these images in a balanced look at his legal career setting the tone for the eleven essays that follow.
All are well written, scholarly and interesting. Some of the essays were published in law reviews prior to inclusion in this book.
All contain a full set of endnotes and the book has an index and a full set of illustrations.

The book has three main sections: Evaluating Lincoln's Career, The Illinois Years and The Washington Years.
Each essay deals with an idea in of one of the main sections. This develops a comprehensive introduction to his legal career and how this influenced Lincoln in the White House.
Much or what is written here stays away from the famous cases. While mentioned and given their real importance, the everyday bread and butter work is highlighted.
These are the cases that prepare Lincoln for the major cases and built his reputation. "The Illinois Years" takes a close look at this aspect of Lincoln's practice.

Each essay is about fifteen to 30 pages in length, allowing you to "cherry pick" essays or skip back and forth.
I confess that I read Holzer's "Reassessing Lincoln's Legal Career" and jumped to Owens' "Abraham as Practical Constitutional Lawyer".
In the end, I read them all.

Silent Heroes: Downed Airmen and the French Underground, by Sherri Greene Ottis

In the early years of World War II, it was an amazing feat for an Allied airman shot down over occupied Europe to make it back to England. By 1943, however, pilots and crewmembers, supplied with "escape kits," knew they had a 50 percent chance of evading capture and returning home. An estimated 12,000 French civilians helped make this possible. More than 5,000 airmen, many of them American, successfully traveled along escape lines organized much like those of the U.S. Underground Railroad, using secret codes and stopping in safe houses. If caught, they risked internment in a POW camp. But the French, Belgian, and Dutch civilians who aided them risked torture and even death. Sherri Ottis writes candidly about the pilots and crewmen who walked out of occupied Europe, as well as the British intelligence agency in charge of Escape and Evasion. But her main focus is on the helpers, those patriots who have been all but ignored in English-language books and journals. To research their stories, Ottis hiked the Pyrenees and interviewed many of the survivors. She tells of the extreme difficulty they had in avoiding Nazi infiltration by double agents; of their creativity in hiding evaders in their homes, sometimes in the midst of unexpected searches; of their generosity in sharing their meager food supplies during wartime; and of their unflagging spirit and courage in the face of a war fought on a very personal level.

From Publishers Weekly
The British bombed occupied Europe and Germany by night; American aircraft bombed by day. German fighters and flak gunners downed hundreds of aircraft, and thousands of airmen found themselves hunted by the Germans on the ground or in offshore waters. Enter the French Resistance. Independent scholar Ottis has produced a valuable addition to the "hidden" history of WWII, showing us the men, woman and sometimes children who helped Allied airmen evade capture, with more than 5,000 crewmen returned to England. Ottis, using primary and secondary materials as well as her own interviews with French civilians, tracks in suspenseful detail the three major routes for getting the airmen across the Pyrenees to Spain. Whole villages sometimes were at risk if the Gestapo found and cracked down on a "line." Executions and deportations to concentration camps were commonplace. Ottis also reports on postwar reunions, including a trek that reenacted one of the lines into Spain. This is the first documented (including 30 b&w photos) study of escape routes in almost 30 years, and it makes for a valuable addition to WWII history. (May)Forecast: American encounters with the Resistance is an underexplored area of Franco-American relations and should draw readers from beyond the WWII market. The individual stories Ottis has unearthed are detailed enough to interest producers.

Great Source for Reference
By J. E. Ballantyne, Jr.
I purchased this book to use as a reference source for a theatrical script which I have in development. This is a great book. Very informative on the subject of downed airmen in France and the numerous escape networks during World War II. Of particular interest was the huge amount of information on the O'Leary Line, which was one of the major escape networks.
The writing style of the author made it easy reading and made it difficult to put the book down. This work will be a very valuable piece of the puzzle as I further develop this theatrical work. It enabled me to take a totally different look at what I was trying to accomplish and put me on the right track.

Highly Recommended

Ang Lee (b. 1954) has emerged as one of cinema's most versatile, critically acclaimed, and popular directors. Known for his ability to transcend cultural and stylistic boundaries, Lee has built a diverse oeuvre that includes films about culture clashes and globalization (Eat Drink Man Woman, 1994, and The Wedding Banquet, 1993), a period drama (Sense and Sensibility, 1995), a martial arts epic (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, 2000), a comic book action movie (Hulk, 2003), and an American western (Brokeback Mountain, 2005).

The Philosophy of Ang Lee draws from both Eastern and Western philosophical traditions to examine the director's works. The first section focuses on Taoist, Confucian, and Buddhist themes in his Chinese-language films, and the second examines Western philosophies in his English-language films; but the volume ultimately explores how Lee negotiates all of these traditions, strategically selecting from each in order to creatively address key issues. With interest in this filmmaker and his work increasing around the release of his 3-D magical adventure The Life of Pi (2012), The Philosophy of Ang Lee serves as a timely investigation of the groundbreaking auteur and the many complex philosophical themes that he explores through the medium of motion pictures.

Endkampf: Soldiers, Civilians, and the Death of the Third Reich, by Stephen G. Fritz

At the end of World War II, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, fearing that retreating Germans would consolidate large numbers of troops in an Alpine stronghold and from there conduct a protracted guerilla war, turned U.S. forces toward the heart of Franconia, ordering them to cut off and destroy German units before they could reach the Alps. Opposing this advance was a conglomeration of German forces headed by SS-Gruppenführer Max Simon, a committed National Socialist who advocated merciless resistance. Under the direction of officers schooled in harsh combat in Russia, the Germans succeeded in bringing the American advance to a grinding halt.

Caught in the middle were the people of Franconia. Historians have accorded little mention to this period of violence and terror, but it provides insight into the chaotic nature of life while the Nazi regime was crumbling. Neither German civilians nor foreign refugees acted simply as passive victims caught between two fronts. Throughout the region people pressured local authorities to end the senseless resistance and sought revenge for their tribulations in the "liberation" that followed.

Stephen G. Fritz examines the predicament and outlook of American GI's, German soldiers and officials, and the civilian population caught in the arduous fighting during the waning days of World War II. Endkampf is a gripping portrait of the collapse of a society and how it affected those involved, whether they were soldiers or civilians, victors or vanquished, perpetrators or victims.

Review
"Fritz has found a way of taking further what in some other historians' hands might have been a conventional and limited study, and showing how it can enrich our understanding of Germany's defeat and its aftermath. This study suggests a new way of viewing both the military and nonmilitary experience of the end of World War."―American Historical Review

"This comprehensively researched book addresses a subject so timely that, were it not for the detailed research supporting his work, Fritz might be assumed to have written in the aftermath of the recent conquest and occupation of Iraq."―Dennis Showalter, History Book Club

"Engrossing. . . . A substantial work of historical scholarship."―International History Review

"Chillingly narrates the last desperate days of Nazi Germany, illustrating the terror and destruction of the last weeks of World War II."―Jerry Cooper

"Convincingly challenges the accepted view that after the Allies crossed the Rhine in March 1945 the German army rapidly disintegrated and the war quickly wound down. . . . Pleasurable to read and definitely informative."―Military Review

"This thoroughly researched and superbly written study illuminates the impact of Nazism on German resistance in the little known campaign in Franconia."―WWII History

A Pleasant Surprise about an Unpleasant Topic
By M. Pitcavage
Stephen G. Fritz's "Endkampf" was an unexpected surprise. While I began reading the book with low expectations--the University Press of Kentucky has published a number of 2nd rate works of military history--I soon realized that there was much here that had not been previously explored in any detail.

What Fritz does, and what makes his book worthwhile, is that he concentrates on the triple relationships of U.S. Military versus German Military (and sometimes Nazi leadership), of U.S. Military versus German Civilians, and German Military/Nazi leadership versus German Civilians, all in the context of a rapidly changing military situation and a collapsing Reich. As the U.S. Army drove through Franconia like a tsunami (although sometimes sharply resisted by the remnants of the German Army and SS), German civilians found themselves freed--sometimes unwillingly--from the coccoon of the Reich. The decisions they would make might come back to haunt them, as the local military situation swept back and forth. To place a white flag from a building might save your life in one situation, or mean certain death in another.

By focusing sharply on one small region--Franconia--Fritz is able to go into great detail and to tease out some of the nuances, as well as supporting anecdotes, that makes this civil-military study special. While he occasionally goes on unwelcome detours--such as tracing the Niebelungen--in general, the book is a pleasure to read, full of information most readers--even military historians--are unlikely to have come across before. Also pleasing is the fact that his account does not stop on May 8, 1945, but continues for some time. His account of post-war German resistance reveals a Germany not nearly as pacified as the official U.S. Army volume on the occupation of Germany suggests.

In some cases, however, his sharp local focus leaves the reader awash in a sea of small towns, with no overall context. Although Fritz sets a context at the beginning of the book, discussing the mythical Alpine Redoubt in the minds of Allied military planners, that is the last time he looks at commanders. Even corps level and divisional level contexts are not typically provided--action is usually at the battalion level. This often provides confusion, especially as the situation was unusually fluid. The maps, alas, are almost useless in helping the reader sort this out.

Still, I could not help but be impressed by this study, which definitely is a worthy addition to our understanding of the late war campaigns in the west, as well as to our understanding of the last days of the Reich.

Well Documented Historical Record
By John P. Rooney
"Endkampf", by Stephen G. Fritz. S

ub-titled, "Soldiers, civilians And The Death Of the Third Reich", University press of Kentucky, 2004.

This is a well-documented record of the last months of the war in Europe, 1945, with an emphasis on the American drive through the south of Germany, into Austria. I say well-documented because, for example, Professor Fritz has devoted pages 276 through 332 on end notes on the subject matter. The author may have overdone it for some readers, because he has almost as many pages of notes as he does have text. This would, however, make my MA thesis advisor happy. Along the same scholarly theme, the book contains some 22 pages of primary sources (pp. 331-352) and some 23 pages of secondary sources (pp. 353-369).

Despite these scholarly overtones, Stephen G. Fritz has a written an excellent history of the final chapters of the war, the "end struggle".

Contemporary generals (e.g. Eisenhower and Bradley) were quite concerned with the so-called "Werwulf" -Werewolf- groups who were supposed to act as guerrilla units and continue hostilities even though the Wehrmacht had surrendered. Looking back over the past 60 years, we know that this guerilla army was an empty threat. The author, however, spends a lot of time on the this threat, that never materialized. He gives both the high command's ideas of what was happening in the south of Germany, but also presents the "grunt's" view of the end struggle. For example, he clearly shows that the American Army would not tolerate any last ditch defense. If the Hitler Youth or the SS chose to defend a town or village to the last civilian, the Americans would sit back, call in artillery and the USAAF and literally destroy the location. Mr. Fritz documents incidents where the German civilian population wanted to surrender, but the die-hard units (e.g. SS units) wanted to fight to the bitter end. This resulted in some cases of civilians being hanged for treason and in other cases, the SS units evacuating the town. Interestingly, the author has tracked down the men who did hanging and reported on the final judgement on these individuals, many years after the end of the war.

I found this book to be well written and to contain a wealth of references and sources on the final victory in the southern part of the Germany and some parts of Austria, as the Allies worked to prevent any post-war continuation of hostilities.

Valuable insights into the powder keg of defeated Germany
By EndSieg
The first chapter explains the US decision to abandon the drive towards Berlin but it is not the common explanation of avoiding US losses in conquering a city assigned the Soviet zone.
By March 1945 the majority of allied leaders believed in an alpine redoubt ("Alpenfestung"). Its biggest potential danger was the genesis of an "undefeated Nazi" myth, similar to the 1918 "undefeated KaiserHeer" myth. The Allies did not want to repeat the mistake of 1918 (hence the policy of total unconditional surrender). By March 28, Eisenhower informed Stalin, Marshall and Montgomery that they would drive towards the South/Southeast instead of Berlin, a decision bitterly protested by the British.

The next five chapters describe what happened in Franconia during April 1945 but are so detailed that they may loose the reader's interest (which is why I did not rate the book higher, despite the very interesting first and last two chapters, but that is subjective).
Those chapters give a glimpse into the nature of life in that crumbling Nazi regime when soldiers and civilians were terrorized and executed by party functionaries and SS commanders ("Goetterdaemmerung"). They also document the hard battles faced there by the GIs who, hoping to survive the final stage of the war, made full use of their artillery at the first sign of resistance, prompting the civilians to beg the Wehrmacht and SS not to put up a defense point in their villages, which led to numerous conflicts between civilians and SS/Nazi officials (e.g. the "Weibersturm" of Windsheim).

The last two chapters, the more interesting ones in my opinion, document and explain the tensions and violence between GIs, Jewish and other DPs (displaced persons), German civilians and returning POWs, and the German resistance ("Wehrwolf").
The formation of the Wehrwolf was announced on the "Deutschlandsender" on April 1st. By late November US troops had arrested 3000 Germans and seized large stores of ammo. A large national and organized Wehrwolf did not develop in part because of the vigilance of US forces but small local Wehrwolf activities occurred until early 1947 and caused several thousand deaths.
The fraternization between GIs and German females was resented by returning German POWs ("the German soldier fought for six years, the German woman for only five minutes", p208) and led to some violence against fraternizing GIs in 46/47.
Another source of tension was the perceived criminality of Jewish DPs which led to a strong rise in anti-Semitism and pro-Nazism. There were 6 to 8 million DPs (surviving Jews, POWs and slave laborers) wandering and looting in the countryside of the western zones at war's end, creating more violence than the Wehrwolf. After being housed in DP camps, they became the brokers in the black-market triangle between GIs (suppliers) and Germans (buyers). The black-market was the only way for Germans to avert slow starvation given their meager 900 to 1500 cal/day rations. The minority of Jewish DPs (145,000 in the American zone) was a special and explosive situation: they were still housed in camps with poor food and sanitation. After the Harrison commission, their food rations were raised to 2500 cal/day (double that of the Germans) and they were housed in requisitioned German homes. That understandably created German-Jewish tensions and rekindled anti-Semitism. The Germans blamed the Jewish DPs for the black-market, for the shortages of food and housing, and the international Jewry for their misery (p241). There was also a high level of anti-Semitism among the GIs and even among US officers, as best illustrated by Patton who in September 1945 characterized the Jews as "lower than animals"(p243). Open hostilities broke out between GIs and Jewish DPs in the first half of 1946 during crackdown operations on the black-market and all violence lasted until the DP camps were closed.

Action and Character According to Aristotle: The Logic of the Moral Life, by Kevin L. Flannery SJ

Aristotle labors under no illusion that in the practical sphere humans operate according to the canons of logic. This does not prevent him, however, from bringing his own logical acumen to his study of human behavior. Aristotle, according to Fr. Flannery, depicts the way in which human acts of various sorts and in various combinations determine the logical structure of moral character. Some moral characters - or character types - manage to incorporate a high degree of practical consistency; others incorporate less, without forfeiting their basic orientation towards the good. Still others approach utter inconsistency or moral deprivation, although even these, in so far as they are responsible for their actions, retain a core element of rationality in their souls. According to Aristotle, moral character depends ultimately upon the structure of individual acts and upon how they fit together into a whole that is consistent - or not consistent - with justice and friendship.

This book will appeal to professional scholars and graduate students with an interest in Aristotle's ethics and in ethics generally. It proposes comprehensive interpretations of some difficult passages in Aristotle's two major ethical works ( the Nicomachean Ethics and the Eudemian Ethics ). It brings to bear upon the analysis of human behavior passages in Aristotle's logical works and in his Physics. It also draws connections among areas of particular interest to contemporary ethics: action theory, the analysis of practical reason, and virtue ethics.

Excellent scholarship
By JMD
Fr. Flannery has produced an excellent work of scholarship with this in-depth treatment of Aristotle's action theory and its continuing relevance to an analysis of human action today. The author's razor-like precision delves into the ancient texts and not only seeks to understand their author on his own terms and reconcile seeming inconsistencies, but also brings his ideas into conversation with modern action theory and application. This is the work of a scholar's scholar. Highly recommended for professional scholars and graduate level philosophy students.

Nothing Like an Ocean: Stories (Kentucky Voices), by Jim Tomlinson

Jim Tomlinson's previous book of short stories, Things Kept, Things Left Behind, won the prestigious Iowa Short Fiction Award and received enthusiastic reviews. The New York Times compared the strong sense of place in Tomlinson's writing to that found in the works of Flannery O'Connor and Alice Munro. The stories in his new collection, Nothing Like An Ocean, also reflect Tomlinson's awareness of place, revisiting the fictional town of Spivey, a community in rural Appalachia where the characters confront difficult circumstances and, with quiet dignity, try to do what is right. In the title story, Tomlinson explores themes of forgiveness and acceptance in the lives of two characters, Alton Wood, a high school math teacher isolated by grief, and his sister Fran, who is emotionally paralyzed by her part in a tragic death. The two take halting steps back into the world after Alton receives an anonymous invitation to a church singles dance. These themes also underlie "Angel, His Rabbit, and Kyle McKell," which tells of Dempsie's evening with two men―her volatile boyfriend and the recently returned Iraq War amputee whose secret she has been keeping. Loss and the inevitability of change recur in Tomlinson's stories. In "Overburden," Ben, a man simultaneously contemplating AARP membership and impending fatherhood, travels with his wife, Sarah, back to eastern Kentucky to visit the oak tree that was essential to their courtship, only to find the site as barren and featureless as the moon, a casualty of mountaintop removal mining. "So Exotic" draws us into the worn environs of Rita's Huddle In Café, where the owner becomes the confidant of Quilla, a mousy bank teller who blossoms as the muse of an eccentric artist from Belarus. The eleven stories in Nothing Like An Ocean evoke a strong sense of small-town Kentucky life, finding humor in the residents' foibles while never diminishing their inner lives. Tomlinson's masterful fiction captures light and dark moments, moments that are foreign yet deeply familiar, as his characters seek redemption and sometimes find unexpected grace..

From Booklist
In his second collection, Tomlinson offers a series of stories set in rural Appalachia, writing movingly of people struggling to find happiness in lives dictated more by economics than sentiment. In the title story, a brother and sister attend a singles mixer and dare to consider a life beyond the shared tragedy of a child’s death; in another tale, a scarred Iraqi veteran forces an acquaintance to reconsider the sacrifices she makes for a small sense of security. There is also a mother who relies too heavily on her son’s coping ability and is missing his slide into drug abuse. In the book’s highlight, “Overburden,” Tomlinson strikes out into the Kentucky landscape itself, writing about the practice of mountaintop-removal coal mining as disastrous beyond repair: “The only thing that’ll stop them is when there’s none left to take.” This is a theme that also applies to his characters and to the patchwork drama that is America, as Tomlinson stakes a literary claim that is not only geographic but also emotional. --Colleen Mondor

A Reader's Writer that Writer's Should Read
By Ken F.
The best testament that I can give to Jim Tomlinson's craft as a writer is that yesterday on the train into the city I was reading and by the time I got to the end of one story I was tearing up and had to set the book down. It was not a terrible tragedy, it was that Jim has an extraordinary talent to calmly explore and reveal the emotional depths of his character's lives... even when they are not quite aware of it themselves. Jim is a masterly writer; his stories come smooth to the reader but it is obvious that good honest labor, with a dose of pain and compassion has gone into creating them. For those who share an interest in Kentucky, in Appalachia, and who enjoy real good honest story about people we might know ourselves, and those stories written real well, I recommend you check out this book.

Nothing like an ocean
By J. Haynes
Jim Tomlinson is a masterful writer. His voice is authentic whether his characters are male or female, young or old. He draws the reader into the Kentucky/Appalachian world he's recreated. A regional gem, beautifully written. This one will endure.

A Master Storyteller
By Amazon Customer
Jim Tomlinson's new book of short stories, Nothing Like An Ocean, is wonderful, subtle, quiet storytelling of a type that has nearly dissapeared. Deep empathy, unique voices, and lives that I recongnize, and appreciate- these are the characters that live in this book. Some of the stories share characters, and the setting, the mountain country in western Kentucky, wraps its arms around the characters and rocks them to sleep like a grandmother with a fussy child. Wonderful stories from a master. Don't miss this one.

Minor Augustine, but still Augustine
By Rachel Simmons
Augustine devoted quite a bit of attention to this book in his "Retractions", and as a result, we know quite a bit about its history.
The work is a collection of answers to questions composed by Augustine between the years 388 and 396, when he was living in a monastic community. The brothers asked him questions on a wide variety of topics and saved his answers. Some time later, as Bishop of Hippo, Augustine caused the questions and answers to be collected together into a single book, though how much detailed editorial direction he provided is unclear.
Before discussing the original text, it is worthwhile to note David L. Mosher's contributions to this edition. First, and most obviously, he translated the work into English. His translation is liberally commented with footnotes, noting translation issues, scripture references, historical references to people, places, events and ideas, as well as clarifications and corrections indicated by Augustine himself in "Retractions".
By way of introducing the book, Mosher wrote a preface that is really just a thank-you note to people who assisted him, a short bibliography mostly of general references on Augustine, a short list of abbreviations, and a fairly length introduction aimed at (1) describing the history and form of the work, and (2) doctrinal points. Finally, at the end of the book, Mosher provides two indices - an extensive general index and a scripture index.
In sum, Mosher's supplemental materials are excellent.
Insofar as the text proper goes, Augustine's individual answers vary in the length from less than half a page up to about ten pages, with most at the shorter end of the scale. The shorter answers tend to be philosophical in nature, with little or no explicit scriptural argumentation given. The longer answers tend to be concerned with scriptural exegesis, which Augustine typically approaches by seeking to uncover the symbolic meaning of the passage through close analysis.
With regard to subject matter, it is so diverse that it is difficult to tease out any unifying themes other than those that are the natural result of a single author. Certainly one gets to see Augustine apply his methods to a variety of individual cases and from them can infer how he generally thought and approached problems, but the cases tend to remain individual, rather than adding up to a cohesive whole. This is a shortcoming sufficient to have led me to consider grading this at four stars instead of five, but in the end, this is still a book that is read over 1500 years after it was written, and that makes downgrading it difficult even if it is not Augustine's best or most influential work.
