This selection of previously untranslated documents from the French debates about Christian philosophy provides a long-needed complement to available English-language literature on the subject. These documents show that the debates were highly complex, involved multiple sides, and prompted development of certain participants' positions. Four of Maurice Blondel's contributions are included, as are selections by Gabriel Marcel, Etienne Gilson, Fernand Van Steenberghen, among others. A detailed historical introduction provides much-needed background to these intertwined debates.
The editor's thematic outline of seventeen different participants' positions and engagements includes but also goes beyond the selections translated in the volume. It provides a full and balanced treatment of the numerous participants, and sets the complex intellectual context for understanding the positions, issues, and main personalities of the debate. About the Author
At the time of publication, Gregory B. Sadler was an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Fayetteville State University and Associate Editor of the Journal of Philosophy: A Cross-Disciplinary Inquiry. He has since moved on, founded an educational consulting company, ReasonIO (putting philosophy into practice), and teaches courses in Philosophy at Marist College.
Dr. Sadler has authored dozens of articles, book chapters, and encyclopedia entries on figures and movements in the History of Philosophy, including Aristotle, Stoicism, Anselm of Canterbury, Thomas Aquinas, Thomas Hobbes, Utilitarianism, G.W.F. Hegel, Maurice Blondel, Etienne Gilson, Jacques Maritain, Jacques Lacan, Jacques Derrida, and Alasdair MacIntyre.
He is also an educational innovator and entrepreneur, providing workshops and consultations on pedagogical strategies, intentional course design, and assessment of student learning. An Excellent Overview of a Central Theological Problem

I discovered this book quite by accident, though a very happy one as it has turned out to be quite useful for my interests in philosophy and theology, especially in the discussion about the relationship between the natural and supernatural, for the question of the idea of a "Christian Philosophy" falls smack in the middle of such a debate.
Not only is the introduction meticulous and informative, but sheds light on a relatively small issue that, in the end, has huge implications for the questions relating to positivism, philosophy, science, and theology. How does man relate to the world and to God? Does he relate to God? Is there such a thing as Christian philosophy? Is philosophy able to be open to the idea of God and religion? These and many other questions are what underpin the excellent articles translated in this book. For anyone interested in these ideas, this book is a must read.
The author begins his book with an absolutely fantastic 100 page introduction to the issues surrounding the debate. He gives both a historical overview in order to contextualize the problem as well as a thematic overview in order to understand the basic premises that each of the many contributors made to the debate. The introduction alone is well worth the purchase of the book, for I have yet to find anywhere else such a well thought out and systematic presentation of this topic, at least in English.
The author then offers a variety of translated article from such great names as Etienne Gilson, Maurice Blondel, Antonin Sertillanges, and Leon Noel. The articles are organized according to the development of the debate in a chronological manner. The bibliography is also an excellent resource in pointing the reader to further readings on the topics addressed in this debate.
On a personal note, it is because of reading this book during one of my classes on Vatican II that I decided to do a term paper on Maurice Blondel. Though I had encountered him before, I had yet to encounter the subtle, nuanced positions he had that really made sense for me not only intellectually, but in the life of lived reality as well. If I hadn't read this book, I would not have finally read Blondel's L'Action which, I am convinced, is far too overlooked in contemporary philosophical circles.
Again, anyone interested in the continuing debate about faith and reason, philosophy and theology, or the natural and the supernatural has to read this book. It helps to further situate the entire problematic and it demonstrates that this was not just an issue for theologians, but even secularists and Protestants as well!
