Origen, son of the martyr Leonides, oldest in a family of seven children was born probably at Alexandria 184/85 and died probably in Tyre 253/54 after imprisonment and torture during the Decian persecution. Surnamed "man of steel" Origen was an outstanding theologian of the early Greek-speaking Church, a man of the virtue and a genius with a prodigious capacity for work, an excellent teacher to whose lectures students flocked "and did not give him time to breathe for one bath of pupils after another kept frequenting from morn till night his lecture-room" (Eusebius, H.E. 6, 15).

As an author Origen surpasses all the writers of the Early Church in literary output. A list complied by Eusebius, now unfortunately lost, credited Origen with some 2000 books. Even a far shorter list known to St. Jerome and mentioned by him in his Letter To Paula giving the number of 786 works is still impressive. Jerome then goes on to add some reflections. "Do you see the Greeks and Latins outstripped by the work of one man? Who could ever read all that he wrote? What reward did he receive for this exertion? He is condemned by bishop Demetrius; except for the bishops of Palestine, Arabia, Phoenicia and Achaia the world concurs in his condemnation. Rome itself convokes an assembly against this man not because of novelty of teachings, not because of heresy as now mad dogs pretend against him, but because they could not bear the fame of his eloquence and learning and were considered speechless when he spoke". (Corpus scriptorum ecclesiasticorum latinorum, vol.54, pp.253-59).

Origen's chief aim was to be an interpreter of the Scriptures. To this end he composed scientific commentaries on various books of the Old and New Testaments, homilies, and short exegetical notes. The translations presented here belong to the second category. Though he did not reject the literal sense of Scripture Origen here is more intent upon the spiritual meanings of passages selected from Genesis and Exodus.

An excellent Bible study

Origen was an extreemly intelligent man as is evident from his studies of the Scriptures. He was a leading "founding father" of the church until his later strange ideas got him excommunicated. This particular set of Bible study was very interesting and I was glad that I bought it.

In recent years, there has been a great revival of interest in natural law thinking, one that has occurred across a range of disciplines and perspectives―from the philosophical and theological to the most contemporary debates in the area of legal and political philosophy. Much of this recent work is traced to the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas. To explore and evaluate the current revival, this volume brings together many of the foremost scholars on natural law. They examine the relation between Thomistic natural law and the larger philosophical and theological tradition. Furthermore, they assess the contemporary relevance of St. Thomas's natural law doctrine to current legal and political philosophy.

The book contains an extensive introduction to the topic, followed by four sections that treat various aspects of natural law thinking. The first section examines some of the philosophical foundations of natural law, especially the understanding of nature it presupposes. The second section is devoted to the theological context in which St. Thomas's natural law doctrine is situated. The essays in the third section discuss the new natural law theory espoused by Germain Grisez and John Finnis and the hotly debated question as to whether their theory is genuinely Thomistic. The final section explores several contemporary legal and political issues in light of St. Thomas's natural law thinking.

Homer does it again!

I love the "Homer" books for their diversity and ability to integrate so many topics! As social scientists, we need to understand how gender, religion, race, economics, mass media, pop culture and politics are all intertwined. Dale and Foy compile essays from experts of not only political science but English, history, American studies, communications, film and media studies, women's and gender studies and business. They then integrate familiar references to iconic classics like The Simpsons and Star Trek, while also appealing to the more individualistic stylings of Jericho and the hip hop of Dr Dre and Lil Wayne. Essays remain contemporary by including references to Saturday Night Live and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Very few books can cover the 1870 labor movement to Rosie O'Donnell's outspoken lifestyle choices, but this one does it well. There is something for everyone.
Foy states in the introduction that "pop culture becomes a medium for the expression of countervailing ideas in order to advance change and alter the public conversation." This book does just that. It helps promote discussions about the validity of public dissent displayed in pop culture, questions the role of 'legitimate' news sources, and provides new ways of thinking about democratic participation. "In political terms, popular culture is at its best when it provides not a chorus unanimously singing the praises of America and its values but lone voices raising the kinds of questions that must be asked if democracy is to continue to function."

Whether teaching political science, sociology, history, or anything in between, this reader is sure to keep this restless generation of high school and college students interested in learning! I can't wait to see what Homer will discover next!

Homer Simpson Marches on Washington: Dissent Through American Popular Culture is a fine follow-up to the earlier volume 2008's Homer Simpson Goes to Washington. In the book's introduction, editor Joseph Foy, gets to the heart of the book's purpose:

In the premiere episode of The Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert announces that the viewers of his show are "heroes" who know that "something must be done." He then pounds his fist on his C-shaped desk to inform them that they are doing something right now - they are "watching TV." His proclamation might be met with smirks, guffaws, and skepticism, but the authors of the chapters of this book lend credence to this tongue-in-cheek commentary. Although true activism requires mobilized engagement to inspire change, the empowerment of political dissent via mass media and popular culture reflected in these pages provide an argument that true public, democratic action is occurring through popular culture. The essays in this collection explore a diverse range of media from television (The Simpsons, of course, The Daily Show, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and more), to music ("Protest Songs in Popular Music," Hip-Hop) to the movies (M. Night Shymalan's The Happening, and more). Although this is an excellent and engaging book, a few of the essays were difficult to read because I was unfamiliar with the TV show or film that they were examining. Perhaps the most captivating piece, however, was Matthew Henry's "Gabbin' About God: Religion, Secularity and Satire on The Simpsons," which not only explores these themes as they are played out on the show, but also critically examines other books that have explored The Simpsons' treatment of Christianity. Two more of the best essays in this volume were Jamie Warner's treatment of the "Politics of Truth" on Jon Stewart's The Daily Show and Carl Bergetz's piece "It's Not Funny `Cause It's True: The Mainstream Media's Response to Media Satire in the Bush Years." On the other hand, Jerry Rodnitzky's essay on "The Evolution of Protest Songs in Popular Music" was rather disappointing because it limited its focus to only the most mainstream of popular songs, ignoring more marginal arenas of pop music like rap (e.g., Public Enemy) or punk/post-punk ( The Dead Kennedys, Rage Against the Machine, etc.).

Homer Simpson Marches on Washington is essential reading for anyone who believes that mass media can be effective in exposing the oppressive powers that be and inspiring people to resist them.

Here he presents the exciting, almost unbelievable, and often scandalous fates of these late medieval men and women, while highlighting the important connection between the papal monarchy and the social history of the laity in the later Middle Ages.

The remarkable meshing of these two diametrically opposed yet inextricably intertwined facets of literature (and of life) makes for an intriguing sphere of investigation, for the carnival spirit is animated by a human need to dissolve borders and eliminate boundaries―including, symbolically, those between life and death―in an ongoing effort to merge opposing forces into new configurations of truth and meaning.

Expanding upon the seminal ideas of Mikhail Bakhtin, carnival, argues Danow, is designed to allow one extreme to flow into another, to provide for one polarity (official culture) to confront its opposite (unofficial culture), much as individuals engage in dialogue. In this case the result is "dialogized carnival" or "carnivalized dialogue." In their artmaking, Danow claims, human beings are animated by a periodic predisposition toward the bright side of carnival, matched by an equally strong, far darker predilection. Carnival forms of thinking are firmly embedded within the human psyche as archetypal patterns.

This volume gathers studies by prominent scholars and philosophers about the question how have major figures from the history of philosophy, and some contemporary philosophers, addressed "the ultimate why question": why is there anything at all rather than nothing whatsoever? The final section of the book contains personal responses proposed by three contemporary thinkers who have addressed the problem in very different ways--Robert Cummings Neville, Brian Martine, and Nicholas Rescher.

An internationally prominent metaphysician and expert in medieval philosophy, John F. Wippel is the Theodore Basselin Professor of Philosophy at the Catholic University of America. He is the author or editor of numerous books and articles, including The Metaphysical Thought of Thomas Aquinas, Metaphysical Themes in Thomas Aquinas, and Metaphysical Themes in Thomas Aquinas II. Wippel is the recipient of many prestigious awards and honors, including the Aquinas Medal of the American Catholic Philosophical Association.
