3 & 1/2 stars - this one has a lot of padding that won't appeal to most (I fear...)
By Amiable-Akuma
So you can tell that the author had good intentions - I'm not faulting her - actually I congratulate her for putting this work together but still...

I don't think much of this book will appeal to its given audience. For every 1 page of an actual "story" - there are like 2 to 4 pages of additional "info" that does not at all entertain in the same way. It all very much feels like "padding" to me. Extra info that will likely only be a draw to a very select few who are hardcore into details.

I think most fairy/folk tale readers want to read the pure stories and then maybe 1 paragraph of the absolute most-interesting trivia on a particular story before moving on to the next story.

This instead contains pages, upon pages, upon pages of "extra" data - heavy details on the author's personal life and experiences, long notes on story-telling techniques, tables on plotting, histories on where the author first heard or found a given tale, the inclusion of full-length "alternate" versions of many stories (that are not as polished and not really worth reading compared to the "main" version already included beforehand).

If you are setting out to become a professional storyteller yourself you may appreciate some of it - while others may be left scratching their heads as to why the author decided to go SO in-depth towards things that pleasure readers would likely think trivial.

The stories themselves vary in taste and quality - probably more so than many collections but you will probably find a noteworthy bunch you'll personally like. I probably personally enjoyed less than half of the stories but the ones I did like I appreciated a great deal. This may be the nature of such "collected tales" books in general and something objective - but still, this one, even from a story content perspective alone - may clearly be less engaging than books featuring better-known stories, the best of a given country, or something with carefully-selected tales that will appeal to adults.

That's another thing; a good handful of the stories here are more for a juvenile/child audience. Great maybe if you want something to tell or read to kids - but not so if you are more of a hardcore older folktale fan just reading to pass the time.

I would say, get this from the library and don't discount it if you are hunting for more new tales to enjoy - but also simply be aware of what you are getting and know that you may find it to be a lower priority compared to others.

Better than chocolate
By storyteller
I'm thoroughly enjoying my copy Kentucky Folktales: Revealing Stories, Truths, and Outright Lies by Mary Hamilton. It's better than chocolate and it doesn't make you fat. I've been spacing chapters out like nibbling on a chocolate candy to make it last longer. The stories are fascinating, involving and thoroughly entertaining. The connecting commentary is charming while it inspires and shows me how to make a story my own. If you order directly from Mary, she makes more profit but it's available on Amazon and will be in the Resource Room at the NSN Conference in a couple of weeks.
