The Trinity: An Introduction to Catholic Doctrine on the Triune God (Thomistic Ressourcement), by Gilles Emery

Representing the highest quality of scholarship, Gilles Emery offers a much-anticipated introduction to Catholic doctrine on the Trinity. His extensive research combined with lucid prose provides readers a resource to better understand the foundations of Trinitarian reflection. The book is addressed to all who wish to benefit from an initiation to Trinitarian doctrine.

The path proposed by this introductory work comprises six steps. First the book indicates some liturgical and biblical ways for entering into Trinitarian faith. It then presents the revelation of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in the New Testament, by inviting the reader to reflect upon the signification of the word "God." Next it explores the confessions of Trinitarian faith, from the New Testament itself to the Creed of Constantinople, on which it offers a commentary. By emphasizing the Christian culture inherited from the fourth-century Fathers of the Church, the book presents the fundamental principles of Trinitarian doctrine, which find their summit in the Christian notion of "person."

On these foundations, the heart of the book is a synthetic exposition of the persons of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit in their divine being and mutual relations, and in their action for us. Finally, the last step takes up again the study of the creative and saving action of the Trinity: the book concludes with a doctrinal exposition of the "missions" of the Son and Holy Spirit, that is, the salvific sending of the Son and Holy Spirit that leads humankind to the contemplation of the Father.

Best introductory textbook on the doctrine of the Trinity
By William G. Witt
Probably the best introductory textbook I have read on the doctrine of the Trinity. Highly recommended. "Catholic" should be read as "ecumenical" or "creedal," not necessarily Latin. (I write this as an Anglican theology professor who would not hesitate to use this text in a Systematics course.)

Good Introduction to the Trinity
By Roger kwan
This is a great introduction to the Trinity which we used in the seminary. It is not too heavy or technical, and doesn't presuppose any extensive philosophical background. I would recommend it for the beginner theologian.

Representing the Troubles in Irish Short Fiction, by Michael L. Storey

Representing the Troubles in Irish Short Fiction offers a comprehensive examination of Irish short stories written over the last eighty years that have treated the Troubles, Ireland's intractable conflict that arose out of its relationship to England. Read chronologically, the stories provide insightful perspectives on the Troubles, from the 1916 Easter Rising to the recent sectarian violence in Northern Ireland. Nearly every Irish short-story writer during this period has written on the subject, from Corkery, O'Connor, O'Faolain, and O'Flaherty to Lavin, Kiely, Trevor, MacLaverty, Devlin, Morrow, and McCann, among others. The book examines their stories and places them in their proper historical and political contexts. In doing so, it demonstrates how Irish writers have embraced a variety of literary modes and techniques in order to track the varied and changing attitudes of the Irish toward every aspect of the Troubles, including revolution, violence, sectarianism, terrorism, and identity-thinking.

Stories about the Troubles began as the romantic expression of the intense nationalism felt by the rebels of the Easter Rising, but the violence and betrayal of the Civil War of 1922-23 led writers to adopt the mode of literary naturalism to express their disillusionment with nationalism. In the 1930s and 1940s Irish writers often treated the Troubles theme with humor and satire. As tensions increased in the middle decades of the century, culminating in a renewal of violence in Northern Ireland in the late 1960s and extending into the 1990s, writers turned their attention to realistic depictions of sectarian tensions and then to more graphic portrayals of violence and terrorism. In the last few years, writers have explored possible solutions to the Troubles, from the reconciliation of divided communities to the abandonment of cultural identity.

As the only comprehensive study of the subject, this volume makes an important contribution to an understanding of the treatment of the Troubles in Irish short fiction.

Michael L. Storey is Professor of English at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"Lucid textual analysis, balanced theoretical frameworks, a helpful glossary, a thorough bibliography, and two indexes make this a very useful contribution to Irish studies." ― D.R. McCarthy, Choice Magazine

"Storey finds neither group yielding; but the ordinary person, fed up with Ulster's maiming and killing, has come to reject both sides. 'The future citizen of Northern Ireland...may be a person with no cultural identity.' Storey's words ― informed, sensible, restrained ― will reverberate. There is hope."- James H. Bready, Baltimore Sun

"A comprehensive overview of Irish short stories written about the Troubles during the last eighty odd years. . . . Storey offers a lucid and insightful account of the historical and political context of [the] period. Thus he gives extremely useful summary descriptions of the changing public perception of the Troubles, of the role of women in the revolution, or of the solidification of sectarian identities. . . . [A] lucid and much-needed overview."―Elke D'Hoker, Irish University Review

"An excellent, important book written in a clear, accessible style. This book is the first to systematically examine virtually all twentieth-century stories about the Troubles. The author fruitfully brings to bear such key current theoretical issues as gender and postcolonialism, achieving a significant contribution to the field."―James M. Cahalan, Indiana University of Pennsylvania

"This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the twentieth century Irish short story, and is written in an accessible, student-friendly style. It gives detailed summaries of the short stories, explains their historical and political contexts, and interacts

Philosophers of the RenaissanceFrom Brand: Catholic University of America Press

Philosophers of the Renaissance introduces readers to philosophical thinking from the end of the Middle Ages through the sixteenth century. International specialists portray the thought of twenty-one individual philosophers, illustrating their life and work and highlighting the importance of their thinking.

Best known among the personalities discussed are Nicholas of Cusa, who combined mathematics with theology; Pico della Mirandola, the first to introduce Hebrew wisdom; Marsilio Ficino, who made the works of Plato accessible to his contemporaries; Pietro Pomponazzi, who challenged the Church with unorthodox teachings; and Tommaso Campanella, who revolutionized philosophy and science while imprisoned.

Philosophers of this period explored a great variety of human knowledge: Greek scholars who had emigrated from Byzantium spread ancient and patristic learning; humanists applied their skills to art, architecture, and the text of the Bible (Leon Battista Alberti and Lorenzo Valla); some debated about methods of scientific research ― always with religion in their mind (Raymond Lull, Agrippa of Nettesheim, Philipp Melanchthon, Petrus Ramus, Bernardino Telesio, Jacopo Zabarella); others pondered the ethical implications (Michel de Montaigne, Luis Vives); or they confronted a radical overturn of the traditional worldview (Francesco Patrizi, Giordano Bruno, Francisco Suárez).

The book weaves together the stories of these thinkers by emphasizing the unity of Renaissance philosophy in its attempt to find a philosophical method, combine religious and political thought, analyze language, and discuss the practical dimension of philosophy. Originally published in German in 1998, the chapters have been thoroughly revised and updated. A chapter on Luis Vives was written specifically for this English edition; an extensive bibliography introduces the reader to the current research on philosophers of the Renaissance.

Diary of a Southern Refugee during the War, by Judith Brockenbrough McGuire

Judith Brockenbrough McGuire's Diary of a Southern Refugee during the War is among the first of such works published after the Civil War. Although it is one of the most-quoted memoirs by a Confederate woman, James I. Robertson's edition is the first to present vital details not given in the original text. His meticulous annotations furnish references for poems and quotations, supply the names of individuals whom McGuire identifies by their initials alone, and provide an in-depth account of McGuire's extraordinary life.

Throughout the war years, McGuire made poignant entries in her diary. She wrote incisive commentaries on society, ruminated on past glories, and detailed her hardships. Her entries are a highly personal, highly revealing mixture of family activities; military reports and rumors; conditions behind the battle lines; and her observations on life, faith, and the future. In providing illuminating background and references that significantly enhance the text, Robertson's edition adds considerably to our understanding of this important work.

Review
"The Confederacy's woman diarists left us our best inside view on the daily life of the people of the South in wartime. They had the leisure to write, were deeply invested in the war effort, and afforded a more nuanced view than many men. Standing tall among those that have survived is Judith Brokenbrough McGuire's wonderful inside portrait of life in Richmond's middle class. Thanks to editor James I. Robertson's exhaustive annotations, her daily entries cast even more light now than before, transforming what has always been an important book into a vital foundational document on the inner life of the doomed Confederacy."―William C. Davis, author of Lincoln's Men: How President Lincoln Became Father to an Army and a Nation

"Long valued by students of the Civil War, Judith McGuire's vivid account suffered from inadequate context―until now. At the hands of a master chronicler of the war, we now can read McGuire with fresh eyes and relive with her the hopes, tribulations, despondency, and endurance of a singular southern woman."―Nelson D. Lankford, editor of the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography and author of Cry Havoc! The Crooked War to Civil War, 1861

"Erudite, devout and uncompromising in her loyalty and love of Virginia and the South, Judith Brockenbrough McGuire experienced the American Civil War early as a refugee from her home in Alexandria and remained true to the Confederacy until the close of the conflict. Ably edited and annotated by the distinguished author and historian, James I. Robertson Jr., McGuire's diary exhibits the dignity and poignancy with which she confronted the many challenges and travails thrust upon her amidst the maelstrom of war."―Brian Wills, Director, Civil War Center, Kennesaw State University

"Her vivid account of life during the Civil War now includes vital details not given in the original text."―Southside Sentinel

A Sip from the

The first book to include full texts and photographs from the Apostolic Penitentiary, A Sip from the "Well of Grace" is groundbreaking in its analysis of one of the most important papal offices of the Middle Ages. The Penitentiary alone was responsible for granting absolutions, dispensations, licences, and special declarations in various matters such as marriage, illegitimacy, murder and violence, confession, and clerical ordination. With access to archival records long sealed by the Vatican, Kirsi Salonen and Ludwig Schmugge offer historians many new insights for interpreting an important structure of medieval life.

The book begins with an introduction to the functions of the Apostolic Penitentiary and considers its role among the various papal offices. Also examined are the various circumstances for which Christians turned to its authority. Procedures for cases as well as the canon law regulations behind the cases are discussed, along with an overview of various documents that were produced during the handling of a case in the Penitentiary.

The second part of the book introduces several case studies. Each case is illustrated with the help of original documents preserved both in the Vatican Secret Archives and in numerous local archives in Germany, Italy, and Scandinavia. The original Latin documents are fully edited and accompanied by English translation. Each document is also available in the form of a digital photo, which allows readers to learn concretely what the documents and writing looked like and to exercise palaeographic skills.

A Sip from the "Well of Grace" will be an important addition to any collection on the social and religious history of the later Middle Ages. It is the seventh volume in the ongoing Studies in Medieval and Early Modern Canon Law series.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"Ludwig Schmugge is without doubt the scholar who knows this material most intimately. . . . For this book, he has teamed up with Kirsi Salonen. . . . Together they have produced a pearl of a book, which serves as a handbook for researchers in the Penitentiary archives and as a textbook for teaching the materials. It is a model for such books. . . . We should be grateful to Ludwig Schmugge and Kirsi Salonen for sharing their many years of experience with these sources in such a splendid way. Generations of scholars will now use this book as a gateway to the Penitentiary material."―Anders Winroth, Medieval Review

"Salonen and Schmugge have given us a clear and useful introduction to the work of the penitentiary and the utility of its documents and registers to historians of medieval Europe."―Thomas Izbicki, Speculum

"Kirsi Salonen and Ludwig Schmugge, both having long research experience of the Penitentiary records, have written an introduction to the late medieval sources produced by the Penitentiary. The result is a clear, concise and lucid―occasionally even humorous― book."―Mia Korpiola, Journal of Ecclesiastical History

"The two authors of this short book are among the leading researchers working on this material. . . . It should deservedly become a necessary and enduring first point of contact for anyone wishing to work on the office of the papal penitentiary and the documents that office compiled for itself or issued to be scattered across medieval Catholic Europe."―R. N. Swanson, Sixteenth Century Journal

Stroheim, by Arthur Lennig

Erich von Stroheim (1885-1957) was one of the giants in American film history. Stubborn, arrogant, and colorful, he saw himself as a cinema artist, which led to conflicts with producers and studio executives who complained about the inflated budgets and extraordinary length of his films. Stroheim achieved great notoriety and success, but he was so uncompromising that he turned his triumph into failure. He was banned from ever directing again and spent his remaining years as an actor. Stroheim's life has been wreathed in myths, many of his own devising. Arthur Lennig scoured European and American archives for details concerning the life of the actor and director, and he counters several long-accepted claims. Stroheim's tales of military experience are almost completely fictitious; the ""von"" in his name was an affectation adopted at Ellis Island in 1909; and, counter to his own claim, he did not participate in the production of The Birth of a Nation in 1914. Wherever Stroheim lived, he was an outsider: a Jew in Vienna, an Austrian in southern California, an American in France. This contributed to an almost pathological need to embellish and obscure his past; yet, it also may have been the key to his genius both behind and in front of the camera. As an actor, Stroheim threw himself into his portrayals of evil men, relishing his epithet, ""The Man You Love to Hate."" As a director, he immersed himself in every facet of production, including script writing and costume design. In 1923 he created his masterpiece Greed , infamous for its eight-hour running time. Stroheim returned to acting, saving some of his finest performances for La Grande Illusion (1937) and Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard (1950), a role he hated, probably because it was too similar to the story of his own life.

From Publishers Weekly
In a thrilling biography of one of Hollywood's great originals, Lennig strips away the legends surrounding director/actor Erich von Stroheim. A notorious fabricator, this master of silent films and actor in talkies and silents invented a past for himself as an Austrian nobleman with a distinguished military career. Actually, Stroheim, the son of a Jewish hatmaker, arrived penniless in New York in 1909 at age 24, crowning himself "von" on Ellis Island. In Austria, he had joined the army but was discharged after five months as unfit for military service. Puncturing the lingering myth that Stroheim became an assistant director on D.W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation, SUNY film professor emeritus Lennig, who did remarkable sleuthing in Austria, Paris and Hollywood, establishes that Stroheim was never even on the studio lot. Lennig convincingly portrays Stroheim as an exasperating, tragic, noble, partly self-destructive genius, doomed by Hollywood commercialism because he was an obsessive perfectionist and extravagant spender, a novelist at heart whose striving for full characterizations and intricate plotting led to gargantuan shooting scripts. Lennig compares the full prints of Stroheim's films with the disastrously truncated released versions, revealing the artistry that often ended up on the cutting-room floor. Best remembered as an actor for roles in Jean Renoir's La Grande Illusion (1937) and Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard (1950), Stroheim reveled in playing bad guys--crook, lecher, rapist, evil Hun, mad doctor--yet resented being typecast. Lennig reveals a complex man: caring and sentimental beneath the cynical aristocratic exterior; a religious mystic who renounced Judaism and assumed the mantle of Roman Catholicism, who went to fortune-tellers and made major career moves according to their advice. Lennig's masterful knowledge of film history and technique informs this penetrating biography. Photos. (Jan.)

From Library Journal
Timed to coincide with Turner Classics' world premiere of a restored director's cut of Erich von Stroheim's silent masterpiece Greed, this book aims to puncture the Stroheim myths--myths that, to his liking, obscured his past and nonaristocratic origins. Better known to contemporary film audiences as an actor (Max in Sunset Boulevard was among his most famous roles), it is Stroheim's work as a director that is Lennig's (emeritus, film, SUNY at Albany) main focus. He devotes a chapter to each of the films he directed, including two of Stroheim's lost films. An extremely readable book, this biography manages to convey Lennig's appreciation of Stroheim's genius. Still, he doesn't shy away from exploring the affairs that forced Stroheim to act to support himself. (Always uncompromising, Stroheim tended to produce long movies resembling today's TV miniseries, because for him showing his film characters going through all the minutiae of daily life was crucial for character exposition.) Highly recommended for academic and large public libraries.

From Booklist
When film lovers discuss cinematic geniuses destroyed by commercially minded studio executives, Erich von Stroheim is inevitably the first one they cite. One of the most gifted filmmakers of the silent era, he was noted for uncompromising perfectionism, an eye for opulence, and a stubborn intransigence that evinced a self-destructive urge. His magnum opus, Greed, was slashed by the studio from eight hours to just over two; subsequent films met similar or worse fates. Stroheim reluctantly returned to acting, his Teutonic air and stern visage earning him the sobriquet "The Man You Love to Hate." He had significant roles in two indisputable classics, Grande Illusion and Sunset Boulevard, but his career remains reckoned one of tragically wasted talent. Lennig, who has restored Stroheim's mangled early masterpiece Foolish Wives, debunks several familiar anecdotes, many of them fabricated by Stroheim himself, who didn't confine his storytelling to the screen. Lennig's prose is often overblown, and he sometimes overstates the case for Stroheim's talents, but his expertise makes this the best Stroheim book by far. Gordon Flagg

The Definitive Stroheim Biography Is Here
By John McElwee
Few Hollywood notables have been the object of more distorted, misinformed,or outright fabricated profiles than Erich Von Stroheim. Now that Arthur Lennig has come forward with his long-awaited biography,we are finally given the amazing truth of a maverick star/director who bit every hand that tried to feed him.Lennig has made a serious study of Stroheim for over fifty years---he restored "Foolish Wives" back in the sixties---he traveled to Austria to uncover the real story of Stroheim's humble beginnings---in short,Lennig, who prevously gave us the first and still best of the Bela Lugosi bios, has done it again with "Stroheim"---in fact,he has surpassed himself, and that's saying plenty considering the fact that Arthur Lennig is one of the most well-informed and reliable of all the pioneer film historians.Has there ever been a more fascinating(and ultimatly tragic) figure in the whole history of Hollywood than Erich Von Stroheim? Here's a guy that took on every front office in town---gambled it all for creative control that he invariably lost---but kept returning to the Hollywood arena again and again until they finally broke him.Yes,he took on the system and the system won---or did it?Stroheim's incredible films, even in their truncated latter-day forms, are here to give evidence that this was a director generations ahead of his time---already it's 2000 and we still haven't caught up with him.Read this book and get the dope on how "Greed","The Wedding March",and all the rest came to be. It's riveting. They should give AFI awards for books this good----it's from University Of Kentucky Press,so I don't know how big the print run is,but I suspect it would be a good idea to grab a copy(or two)quick, because this one's going to end up being a collector's item.

Big Disappointment !
By Schatzi
I was eagerly anticipating reading Lennig's bio of von Stroheim. After the first chapter my joy turned sour. Very little is revealed that was'nt already discussed in Richard Kosyarski's The Man You Love To Hate, and Weinberg's Stroheim: A Pictorial Review Of His nine Films. Both of these books are out of print but I beseech you to try to find at your local library or through Amazon's out-of-print service. Lennig prose is rather dry, the subject rarely comes to life, and when he does offer insights Stroheim the man seems sad forever the outsider, a two bit Viennese hustler with visions too great for his talent as a director. I was entranced by Stroheim when I was barely in my teens more than twenty years ago. I know about his losing battles against the studio heads, his public freaks and failures. It is the real man behind films like the breathtaking Greed, the unfinished Queen Kelly and the oftimes painfully erotic Foolish Wives that I wanted brought to life. Perhaps I'm only wishing that he could be brought back to life.

You said that before. A few times
By Kelsey
Although rich in description and detail (and complete with many wonderful images) the writing was, at times, rather poor. Worse, it was repetitive. The author described a scene in a film in the chapter "The Artist," and then described it in the same way in the chapter specifically dedicated to that film. THEN, if the scene was similar to one in another film, the author felt the need to describe it once more, as if the reader were too stupid to remember. Additionally, he often made a scant reference to piece of information that could have added to the topic being examined, but instead of briefly detailing it, he simply mentioned that it was available in another book. (This might have been excusable once, but he did this multiple times!) He was dedicated to his subject, having quoted interviews he conducted, etc, but the book would have been much better if he had been even half as devoted to the reader.

Upheaval: Stories (Kentucky Voices), by Chris Holbrook

In 1995, Chris Holbrook burst onto the southern literary scene with Hell and Ohio: Stories of Southern Appalachia, stories that Robert Morgan described as "elegies for land and lives disappearing under mudslides from strip mines and new trailer parks and highways." Now, with the publication of Upheaval, Holbrook more than answers the promise of that auspicious debut. In eight interrelated stories set in Eastern Kentucky, Holbrook again captures a region and its people as they struggle in the face of poverty, isolation, change, and the devastation of land and resources at the hands of the coal and timber industries. In the title story, Haskell sees signs of disaster all around him, from the dangers inherent in the strip-mining machinery he and his coworkers operate to the accident waiting to happen when his son plays with a socket wrench. Holbrook employs a native's ear for dialect and turns of phrase to reveal his characters' complex interior lives. In "The Timber Deal," two brothers―Russell, a recovering addict recently released from prison, and Dwight, who hasn't worked since being injured in a coal truck accident―try to convince their upwardly mobile sister, Helen, to agree to lease out timber rights to the family land. Dwight is unable to communicate his feelings, even as he seethes with rage: "Helen can't see past herself, is what it is. If John James had fractured his back in two places, it'd be a different story. If he'd broke his neck, it'd be a different story told." Written with a gritty, unflinching realism reminiscent of the work of Larry Brown and Cormac McCarthy, the stories in Upheaval prove that Holbrook is not only a faithful chronicler and champion of Appalachia's working poor but also one of the most gifted writers of his generation.

Review
"What Edith Wharton called 'the hard considerations of the poor' are at the troubled heart of these excellent stories. Holbrook's Appalachia is neither the sentimentalized Appalachia of Dollywood nor the demonized Appalachia of Deliverance; instead these stories do what the best regional literature has always done―find in one particular place what is true of all places . . . Despite his characters' economic status and Eastern Kentucky locale, they are true to all people in their humanity and complexity. . . . I have long considered Chris Holbrook to be the most underrated writer in Appalachia . . . These new stories convince me even more that he is in the top tier of not just Appalachian short story writers, but that he is also in the top tier of story writers in the United States."―Ron Rash, author of Saints at the River"

"Readers throughout the Appalachian region and beyond will be delighted by Holbrook's stories."―Tim Gautreaux, author of The Missing"

"The characters in UPHEAVAL, living their lives of "quiet desperation", remind me of Raymond Carver's stories. Chris Holbrook's perfect pitch for the dialect of the southern mountains delineates lonely, isolated people for whom ancestral traditions are dead, the future appears hopeless, and the desolate present, as their mountains are destroyed all around them, feels unbearable. This unique blend of bleak stoicism, sardonic humor, and menacing claustrophobia make this book a masterpiece for me"―Lisa Alther"

"Ever since the release of Chris Holbrook's HELL AND OHIO, many of us have been impatiently awaiting another collection by this master of the short story. UPHEAVAL is well worth the fourteen year wait. There is not one false note in this entire book, where Holbrook explores all the joys and faults and complexities of the place he knows and loves and understands so well. Each sentence is a tight and taunt poem, each story an intimate, perfect epic. Holbrook is one of our best writers, and UPHEAVAL immediately takes its place as one of the essential Appalachian books." ―Silas House"

"With an unsparing voice, Holbrook reveals universal, sometimes bruising truths about his characters, making this collection linger in the reader's mind long after the last page has been turned."―Okra Picks"

"Holbrook's imagery is so visceral that you can almost feel the grit of coal dust, the vibrations of enormous earth-moving vehicles, and the oppressive heat of the day."―Booklist"

"The stories contain an undercurrent of anger and protest, yet leave the reader with the sense that these strong characters will persevere. Holbrook is a major talent."―Bookclub@KET"

"Written with a gritty, unflinching realism reminiscent of the work of Larry Brown and Cormac McCarthy, the stories in Upheaval prove that Holbrook is not only a faithful chronicler and champion of Appalachia's working poor, but also one of the most gifted writers of his generation." ―Joseph-Beth Booksellers Newsletter"

"These eight stories are as finely shaped, and deceptively intricate, as a piece of Shaker furniture...What smolders beneath the surface of these stories is a sea of anxiety and anger, suppressed until the point of, well, upheaval." ―Louisville Courier-Journal"

"Plain spun and to the point, [Holbrook] shares these stories in a blend that brings together the uncertain future and the very real present of Appalachian life."―Chattanooga Free Press"

"The work of a master: raw in the situations and emotions that Chris Holbrook presents, visceral and resonant in the characters through which he speaks."―Free Word Magazine"

"I have long considered Chris Holbrook to be the most underrated writer in Appalachia. . . . These new stories convince me even more that he is in the top tier of not just Appalachian short story writers, but that he is also in the top tier of story writers in the United States." ―Ron Rash, author of Serena: A Novel"

"The stories of Upheaval thrill with the strangeness of the real, the intensity of human connections. They are narratives of upheavals that leave us with new insights and perspectives. In this age of wonderful storytellers, Holbrook is one of our very best." ―Robert Morgan, author of Gap Creek: The Story of a Marriage"

"Holbrook is not confined by his Appalachian roots, but rather relates that world with all working-class people and writing. Reading these stories is as though we've hung around the local diner in Hazard, Kentucky, watching and listening to the locals, then followed each of them home with these tales of their lives. Holbrook's style is painfully close and real, its beauty grabs you like the face of a child or an old person. This book wins our total attention and brings our mind and heart into a new understanding of what it means to exist in a specific and well-drawn time and place."―New York Journal of Books"―

He Nails it...
By ReviewerMidwest LS
Well, this second collection by Kentucky writer Chris Holbrook is right-on...he tells it straight, creates wonderfully real characters, captures the voices of the people, takes you home with them and to work with them and inside their heads and hearts. He pulls no punches but his images and dialogue are just about perfect. I hear my folks through his writing and I understand them better.

Five stars PLUS
By fabriclady
It really, really, doesn't get any better than this. If you're from this area of the country, and maybe if you're not, you will feel like you know these people. For the brief period of time it takes to read each story, you will be there with these people. Simple, unembellished, and heart-breakingly honest stories. Kudos, Mr. Holbrook.

So true you can smell the coal dust...
By K. Abbott
Stories so well written you can feel the light, smell the coal dust, taste the bitter, hard truth of what is happening in coal country today, as if it was deep in your own experience - as indeed it is if you are even half awake, have ever walked a mountain side or followed a stream near your home place. And in sharing this experience, there is hope that the coal fields and mountain tops and the communities that surround them will one day be preserved, to be a national sacrifice area no longer. Not light reading, but worthwhile.

The Philosophy of Neo-Noir (Philosophy Of Popular Culture), by Mark T. Conard Ph.D.

Film noir is a classic genre characterized by visual elements such as tilted camera angles, skewed scene compositions, and an interplay between darkness and light. Common motifs include crime and punishment, the upheaval of traditional moral values, and a pessimistic stance on the meaning of life and on the place of humankind in the universe. Spanning the 1940s and 1950s, the classic film noir era saw the release of many of Hollywood's best-loved studies of shady characters and shadowy underworlds, including Double Indemnity, The Big Sleep, Touch of Evil, and The Maltese Falcon. Neo-noir is a somewhat loosely defined genre of films produced after the classic noir era that display the visual or thematic hallmarks of the noir sensibility. The essays collected in The Philosophy of Neo-Noir explore the philosophical implications of neo-noir touchstones such as Blade Runner, Chinatown, Reservoir Dogs, Memento, and the films of the Coen brothers. Through the lens of philosophy, Mark T. Conard and the contributors examine previously obscure layers of meaning in these challenging films. The contributors also consider these neo-noir films as a means of addressing philosophical questions about guilt, redemption, the essence of human nature, and problems of knowledge, memory and identity. In the neo-noir universe, the lines between right and wrong and good and evil are blurred, and the detective and the criminal frequently mirror each other's most debilitating personality traits. The neo-noir detective―more antihero than hero―is frequently a morally compromised and spiritually shaken individual whose pursuit of a criminal masks the search for lost or unattainable aspects of the self. Conard argues that the films discussed in The Philosophy of Neo-Noir convey ambiguity, disillusionment, and disorientation more effectively than even the most iconic films of the classic noir era. Able to self-consciously draw upon noir conventions and simultaneously subvert them, neo-noir directors push beyond the earlier genre's limitations and open new paths of cinematic and philosophical exploration.

Review
"Conard can fell confident that these terrific essays will be of interest to film enthusiasts, particularly fans of Neo-Noir. Additionally, for those who come to this volume with some background in philosophy, not only will they be pleased to find fellow philosophers offering accessible introductions to philosophical thinkers and ideas but they are sure to increase their understanding of noir, Neo-Noir, and many familiar film titles, as well as more deeply appreciate the ways in which popular film and television offer wide and varied avenues to doing good philosophy. " ―Kimberly A. Blessing, co-editor of Movies and the Meaning of Life"

"Much has been written about neo-noir's distinction from classic noir . . . but the 13 new essays in this anthology rejuvenate the discussion. Strongly recommended." ―Library Journal"

"Is Neo-Noir anything more than film noir in technicolor? Taking up such latter-day classics as Chinatown , Blade Runner , and Memento , this volume explores how contemporary filmmakers have taken up the challenge of classic film noir and broadened the genre. In this analysis, even the pastel shades of South Beach take on a dark coloring in Miami Vice . These probing essays locate what is neo in Neo-Noir and thus define it as a postmodern genre."―Paul Cantor, author of Gilligan Unbound: Pop Culture in the Age of Globalization

"This collection will serve as a terrific interdisciplinary guide through the chaotic, intriguing world of postmodernist thought as it relates to film and philosophy."―Choice

"Much has been written about neo-noir's distinction from classic noir . . . but the 13 new essays in this anthology rejuvenate the discussion. Conard and his contributors see to it that these essays are accessible to nonacademic readers." ―Library Journal"

"Conrad's collection provides room for abstract thought through a sustained philosophical engagement with the sub-genre. . . . written in 'nontechnical language and require no knowledge of philosophy to appreciate or understand.' ―Film-Philosophy"―

One of the most intriguing books I have read
By James Xabregas
As the title suggests, this book covers the philosophical background behind films defined as neo-noir. Surprisingly this contains a large number of films most people wouldn't readily identity as Film Noir. Blade Runner, Memento, A Simple Plan and the works of Quentin Tarantino and the Cohen Brothers are amongst some of the movies that are analysed in depth. Many other movies are touched upon including Fight Club, Minority Report, The Bourne Identity and many others. The essays in this book give new insight into these movies and are easily readable by those without any background in philosophy. I would highly recommend it.

noir techniques, perspectives, and subjects of second wave of movies in the genre
By Henry Berry
Neo-noir films incorporated the visual style, characterizations, and subject matter of the classic film noir of the 1940s and '50s. But this latter film genre was able to employ more advanced film techniques; and with the replacement of the moralistic Production Code with the more flexible modern ratings system, neo-noir film was able to add new dimensions of subject and visual matter. The 1974 "Chinatown" may be "the first authentic neo-noir," writes Richard Gilmore, professor of philosophy at a Minnesota college. The TV program "Miami Vice"--first program, September 1984--was set in the Great Miami area for its "cycle of decline, decay, development, and renewal (invariably followed by further repetitions of the cycle) [which] affirmed the indeterminacy and contingency of the postmodern noir," as Stevens Sanders, emeritus professor of philosophy at a Massachusetts university writes. Thirteen essays by these and other philosophy professors relate neo-noir films not only to the film noir which preceded them, but also philosophical thoughts and ethical perspectives of Sartre, Plato, Kant, Kierkegaard, Marx, and others. Blade Runner, L. A. Confidential, The Onion Field, Parallax View, Dances With Wolves, and Raiders of the Lost Arc are among the films analyzed as neo-noir or which contain elements of this genre. This collection of essays is a companion of the editor Conard's "The Philosophy of Film Noir."

Excellent book! Just about what I was looking for.
By Michael Gmirkin
This book is a series of essays on the topic of neo noir films, citing specific films for topical treatment in each essay. Such as Memento, China Town, etc. Gives some clues on how Neo Noir differs specifically from classic noir. How the noir genre has changed since the classic era.

Each "chapter" is basically its own essay on some aspect or interpretation of the Neo Noir genre. Haven't quite finished the book, but have liked the half I've read so far.

Those who like this might also check out such titles as Tech-Noir: The Fusion of Science Fiction and Film Noir, The Philosophy of Film Noir) or Neo-Noir, Neo-Noir: The New Film Noir Style from Psycho to Collateral, Detours and Lost Highways: A Map of Neo-Noir and Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner. Haven't picked them up yet, but they all look a bit interesting.

Papal Letters in the Early Middle Ages (History of Medieval Canon Law), by Horst Fuhrmann

This second volume in the History of Medieval Canon Law series discusses the earliest papal decretals, covering the period from the end of the fourth century to the end of the ninth century. In contrast to earlier scholarly works, which usually skim over the beginnings of the papal decretal tradition and the earliest collections containing them, the authors begin with the first papal letters and thoroughly describe their transmission and reception into the canonical tradition up to Gratian's Decretum (1140). They examine the letters of twenty-five popes from Siricius (384-399), whose pontificate undoubtedly produced the first known papal decretal in 385, to Stephen V (885-891).

Horst Fuhrmann is president emeritus of Monumenta Germaniae Historica and Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften. Detlev Jasper is collaborator at the Monumenta Germaniae Historica in Munich.

"Exceptionally clear and helpful, this volume will be welcome by those who have no German or, even more, to those who have no time to plow through the massive literature on the emergence of decretals, the early history of the papal archives, the reception of early decretals in later collections down to Gratian, and the massive collection known as Pseudo-Isidore. . . . Jasper is especially good on the emergence of the papal correspondence, on the rise of the decretals, and on the formation of collections of papal letters. Fuhrmann opens fascinating insights into the papal correspondence by exploring how clever forgers created papal letters whose forms and claims had plausibility."―Theological Studies

"The research of Detlev Jasper and Horst Fuhrmann, the leading authorities on early medieval papal law, has now become accessible to a broad, new audience. . . . The series editors intended Papal Letters to be a point of entry for readers who want to learn about papal law before the twelfth century. In Jasper and Fuhrmann they could not have hoped for more reliable guides."―John J. Contreni, Journal of Religion
