Civil Rights in the Gateway to the South: Louisville, Kentucky, 1945-1980 (Civil Rights and the Struggle for Black Equality in the Twentiet

Situated on the banks of the Ohio River, Louisville, Kentucky, represents a cultural and geographical intersection of North and South. Throughout its history, Louisville has simultaneously displayed northern and southern characteristics in its race relations. In their struggles against racial injustice in the mid-twentieth century, activists in Louisville crossed racial, economic, and political dividing lines to form a wide array of alliances not seen in other cities of its size. In Civil Rights in the Gateway to the South: Louisville, Kentucky, 1945–1980, noted historian Tracy E. K'Meyer provides the first comprehensive look at the distinctive elements of Louisville's civil rights movement. K'Meyer frames her groundbreaking analysis by defining a border as a space where historical patterns and social concerns overlap. From this vantage point, she argues that broad coalitions of Louisvillians waged long-term, interconnected battles during the city's civil rights movement. K'Meyer shows that Louisville's border city dynamics influenced both its racial tensions and its citizens' approaches to change. Unlike African Americans in southern cities, Louisville's black citizens did not face entrenched restrictions against voting and other forms of civic engagement. Louisville schools were integrated relatively peacefully in 1956, long before their counterparts in the Deep South. However, the city bore the marks of Jim Crow segregation in public accommodations until the 1960s. Louisville joined other southern cities that were feeling the heat of racial tensions, primarily during open housing and busing conflicts (more commonly seen in the North) in the late 1960s and 1970s. In response to Louisville's unique blend of racial problems, activists employed northern models of voter mobilization and lobbying, as well as methods of civil disobedience usually seen in the South. They crossed traditional barriers between the movements for racial and economic justice to unite in common action. Borrowing tactics from their neighbors to the north and south, Louisville citizens merged their concerns and consolidated their efforts to increase justice and fairness in their border city. By examining this unique convergence of activist methods, Civil Rights in the Gateway to the South provides a better understanding of the circumstances that unified the movement across regional boundaries.

Who Is My Neighbor?: Personalism and the Foundations of Human Rights, by Thomas D. Williams

Over the past half century the language of human rights has gained such dominance in moral, civic, and ecclesiastical discourse that ethical and social questions are increasingly framed in terms of rights. Yet the vast literature dealing with human and civil rights focuses almost exclusively on the juridical and practical ramifications of rights, rather than the philosophical, moral, and foundational aspects. As a result, the proliferation of rights claims and catalogs has not been accompanied by a reasoned case for the existence of human rights or rational criteria for distinguishing true moral entitlement from spurious claims.

Who Is My Neighbor? makes an original, compelling case for human rights as moral entitlements grounded in the dignity of the human person. Drawing upon insights of Thomistic Personalism, Thomas D. Williams sets forth in clear, vigorous prose the anthropological, philosophical, and theological bases for asserting that the human person must always be loved as an end and never used as a mere means.

Williams grants ample space to critics of rights theory and systematically answers their arguments by showing how, rightly understood, human rights dovetail with classical ethical theory and traditional formulations of justice and natural law. Williams suggests that rights language not only does no violence to classical ethics but serves to highlight certain fundamental truths about the human person essential to right human relations.

Thomas D. Williams, L.C., is Dean of Theology and Professor of Moral Theology and Catholic Social Doctrine at Regina Apostolorum Pontifical University in Rome. He has authored numerous books and articles, including Servants and Witnesses of Hope and Springtime of Evangelization.

Praise for the book:

"Thomas Williams has produced a very well-written an informative book, successfully bringing ethical personalism to bear upon the issue of the legitimacy of rights language." ― Kevin L. Flannery, S.J., The Thomist

"Williams's clear distinction between moral and legal rights is quite helpful. Much of the literature starts with legal rights, which leads to unnecessary problems. This book helps to get us over that hump. If we do not begin with the interpersonal character of moral rights we will never understand the evolution of the Catholic tradition in this matter."―F. Russell Hittinger, Warren Professor of Catholic Studies and Research, Professor of Law, University of Tulsa

"The 'human rights revolution' of recent decades desperately needs a firmer foundation than moral sentiment, utilitarian calculation, or positive law. The achievement of this book is to ground rights in the dignity of the human person, and to do so in a way that should be convincing to Catholics and non-Catholics alike."―Richard John Neuhaus, Editor in Chief of First Things: A Journal of Religion, Culture, and Public Life

Review
The achievement of this book is to ground rights in the dignity of the human person, and to do so in a way that should be convincing to Catholics and non-Catholics alike.
- Richard John Neuhaus, Editor in Chief of First Things: A Journal of Religion, Culture, and Public Life

Father Williams gets John Paul II's project just right. He shows what is traditional and what is novel, and he does so in terms that are comprehensible to the educated reader.
- F. Russell Hittinger, Warren Professor of Catholic Studies and Research, Professor of Law, University of Tulsa

Williams's study presents a significant contribution to the discussion on natural law and the dignity of man. He succeeds in bringing in the main features of personalistic anthropology and ethics and making them fruitful as grounding for thought on human rights.
- Prof. Eberhard Schockenhoff, Professor of moral theology, University of Freiburg

Williams has succeeded in doing for human rights what Pierre Duhem and Stanley L. Jaki have done for the rise of science, namely detaching it from the Enlightenment. An extremely readable volume, which should be fascinating for specialists and novices alike.
- Gregorianum

This book is an important contribution to both the ongoing debate about the place of rights language in Catholic social thought and the broader debate about the meaning of human rights.
- Journal of Markets and Morality

"Williams's clear distinction between moral and legal rights is quite helpful. Much of the literature starts with legal rights, which leads to unnecessary problems. This book helps to get us over that hump. If we do not begin with the interpersonal character of moral rights we will never understand the evolution of the Catholic tradition in this matter."

This book explains not only how the personalism of Karol Wojtyla is able to establish human rights, but also how this love-centered personalism harmonizes with the traditional understanding of Thomistic natural law and Catholic theology. It is a major contribution to Thomistic personalism and to rights theory.

The History of Medieval Canon Law in the Classical Period, 1140-1234From Brand: Catholic University of America Press

Gratian has long been called the Father of Canon Law. This latest volume in the ongoing History of Medieval Canon Law series covers the period from Gratian's initial teaching of canon law during the 1120s to just before the promulgation of the Decretals of Pope Gregory IX in 1234.

Gratian's contributions to the birth of canon law and European jurisprudence were significant: he introduced a new methodology of teaching law by using hypothetical cases and by integrating--and inserting in the texts themselves--his own comments on the canons. He also used the dialectical method to analyze legal problems that he raised in his cases. Though this methodology was first developed by Peter Abelard and others in the schools of Northern France, Gratian was the first to apply it to legal texts with the publication of his Decretum (ca. 1140). Because the Decretum was not just a collection of texts but an analysis of the sources and doctrines of ecclesiastical law, his book enjoyed immediate success across Europe. The Decretum was adopted by teachers from England to Italy and Germany to Spain. Gratian's successors later applied his methodology to the papal appellate decisions (decretals) that gradually became the foundation of canon law in the later Middle Ages.

In this volume, distinguished legal historians contribute noteworthy essays on the commentaries on Gratian, the beginnings of decretal collections and commentaries on them, and the importance of conciliar legislation for the growth of canon law. There are also chapters on the influence of Roman law on canon law and the teaching of canon law in law schools.

John Paul II on the Vulnerable, by Jeffrey Tranzillo

Pope John Paul II was a great defender of truly vulnerable human beings throughout his life, affirming their personhood consistently and powerfully. In John Paul II on the Vulnerable, Jeffrey Tranzillo provides a lucid introduction to John Paul II's philosophical and theological understanding of the human person. Unlike other writings on the topic, Tranzillo's explicit aim is to highlight an aspect of John Paul's work that has been largely neglected until now. He shows convincingly that John Paul's seminal reflections on the human being as a personal agent progressed over time to include human beings at even the most vulnerable stages of development or decline. With this advance in thought, the pontiff began to declare eloquently that the vulnerable are capable of contributing to and enriching the human community through their activity.

An engaging overview of John Paul II's life, thought, and work introduces the book and provides readers with helpful background material. It shows that John Paul's interest in, and lofty regard for, the human person is rooted in his strong Catholic faith and in the extraordinary life experiences that he interpreted in its light. Following this is an examination of his principal works on the human person, emphasizing their implications for vulnerable human beings as persons and actors. Tranzillo considers this theme in the light of selected Christological texts of John Paul II and then reflects on John Paul's portrayal of the vulnerable in his social encyclicals and Evangelium Vitae. A final chapter develops the anthropological underpinnings of John Paul's thought on the radically vulnerable and their personal agency.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Jeffrey Tranzillo received his Ph.D. in systematic theology from the Catholic University of America and has taught at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"This is a masterful work―one of the very best books I have read exploring the thought of John Paul II. Jeffrey Tranzillo provides a compelling and theologically rich account of John Paul II's Christian anthropology, showing how it grounds his understanding of the inalienable dignity of every human being, particularly the vulnerable. Elements of John Paul II's papacy may fade with time, but this extraordinary book keeps the pope's enduring philosophical and theological insights glowingly alive."― Thomas G. Guarino, Professor of Systematic Theology, Seton Hall University

Excellent resource on John Paul II's theological anthropology
By Susan Windley-Daoust
This is a wonderfully executed book. Tranzillo argues, through attention to Pope Saint John Paul II's life experience, education, early and late writings, and response to events in the Church and the world how an understanding of the human being cannot be fostered without attention to the most vulnerable in our society, and our own vulnerability within. It is a highly academic book (and a great resource) but also readable, which is a great help when he addresses some of John Paul II's important but more abstract works (such as The Acting Person, written as Karol Wojtyla). If you are interested in John Paul II's philosophy and theology, the preferential love for the poor and vulnerable, or theological anthropology in general, this belongs in your library.

On Liturgical Asceticism, by David W. Fagerberg

Drawing on the Eastern Orthodox tradition of asceticism and integrating it with recent Western thought on liturgy, David W. Fagerberg examines the interaction between the two and presents a powerful argument that asceticism is necessary for understanding liturgy as the foundation of theology. Asceticism may have been perfected in the sands of
the desert, but it is demanded of every theologian and, indeed, every Christian. It grants the capacity for pondering liturgy and sharing the life of Christ. Fagerberg brings to light asceticism's essential importance in liturgical theology.

Fagerberg's earlier work, Theologia Prima, understood liturgy as the foundation of theology. To that framework, he now adds the relevance of asceticism. Asceticism was understood to overcome the passions by cooperating with grace. It detailed how to train the life of grace and produce what the ancient church called a theologian. Fagerberg carries the wisdom of the earliest centuries forward. He develops a new framework
called liturgical asceticism that combines discipline with sharing the life of Christ.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

David W. Fagerberg, associate professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame, is the author of What Is Liturgical Theology? and Theologia Prima.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"Fagerberg's contribution is creative and original. He presents an able and accessible
summary of the Orthodox ascetical tradition―valuable in its own right―and combines it
with creative insight to bring this tradition to bear on how we conceive our own participation
in the liturgy and what effect this has on our understanding of theology. This brings the
discussion of liturgical theology onto a whole new level."―Jeremy Driscoll, OSB, professor
of theology, Mount Angel Seminary and Pontifical Athenaeum San Anselmo, Rome

"The idea of liturgical theology has become popular during the past few decades, wresting liturgy from the liturgiologists and testing what the church teaches against how the church prays liturgically. In this powerful and original book, David Fagerberg takes this development a stage further. By exploring Christian asceticism, mostly using Orthodox sources, he introduces another dimension, essential if liturgical theology is to be fully assimilated in the lives of Christians."―Andrew Louth, professor emeritus of patristic and Byzantine studies, Durham University

"Consistent with the tradition of the Church, Fagerberg aims to restore asceticism to its rightful place within liturgical theology. It is a rich journey through Chestertonian style, paradox and prose, and dense with wise quotes from the Desert Fathers." -Transpositions

Requires Pondering but Worth It
By Loretta M. Herbel
Fagerberg is uniquely qualified to write this book, being well verse in liturgical theology from both the Western Roman Catholic Tradition as well as the Eastern Christian Orthodox Tradition. In this work, he draws from both, but decidedly so from the Orthodox Tradition. If you think liturgy is merely deciding what colors look nice on the altar or what flowers would contrast nicely with the altar cloth, you need to read this. Similarly, if you think liturgy must be more but you aren't sure how it is more, you need to read this. Ultimately, though, this book is not about "liturgical theology" but about the interrelation between liturgy, theology, and asceticism. Fagerberg's chapters seek to place all three dimensions in "communion" with one another, if you will, and he does so successfully. He is clearly well informed concerning the ascetic history of the Christian Church and utilizes reflections from authors and saints such as Fr. Alexander Schmemann and St. John Climacus. Those who have followed or read Fagerber's other works will notice that he again liberally intersperses witty shots of succinct prose, as one would expect from a lover of G.K. Chesterton (which Fagerberg is). This is not a book that should be read quickly, but it s a book that can be read by anyone who is grounded in religious and theological discourse, whether at the collegiate level or self-taught. Orthodox, Roman Catholics, and "high church" Protestants would likely benefit the most, though this book is not for them alone and just might challenge some of their views (for high church Protestants would be challenged to articulate why they're still Protestant and some Roman Catholics would be challenged to articulate why they've treated their own liturgical tradition as play-doh). A good read. Now, I need to heed his advice and focus more on the "doing" of fasting and prayer.

An Indispensable Contemplative Guide to Living a Robust Christian Existence
By Maintenance
David Fagerberg writes with conceptual clarity and Chestertonian style wit. Led by his forerunners Alexander Schmemann and Aidan Kavanagh, Fagerberg continues to challenge the reader to engage in theologia prima––liturgical engagement with God (worship). He argues that asceticism is the other side of liturgical theology, both bleed into the other: liturgy calls the Christian to a life of virtue which askesis forms, and askesis in turn brings the Christian back, unfettered by the corruption of the world, to worship, to liturgy.
Anyone who recognises the importance of spiritual formation will find this book invaluable. One piece of advice: read slowly and allow it to sink in. Do not read this like a systematic theology monograph, but rather read it like a spiritual exercise.

Handbook for Curates: A Late Medieval Manual on Pastoral Ministry (Medieval Texts in Translation), by Guido of Monte Rochen, Guido of Mont

Guido of Monte Rochen's Handbook for Curates became the most popular pastoral manual at the close of the Middle Ages as thousands of copies were printed in Europe. Composed of a mixture of practical "how to" and theological instruction, the Handbook taught pastoral basics to everyday priests. As such, it is an essential and vibrant source on late medieval religion and parish practice, which this full-length translation makes available in English for the first time.

The Handbook is divided into three parts: sacraments and their administration, the sacrament of penance, and basic catechesis. Together they reflect Guido's mission to facilitate the fundamental duties priests were expected to fulfill for souls under their charge. Guido explains constituent parts of each sacrament, how each is done, who receives it, and what problems might arise in its practice. In step with broader religious currents of his day, Guido treats penance extensively, addressing topics from instances of the deadly sins to how to question penitents in confession. His Handbook concludes with explanations of the Creed, Lord's Prayer and Ten Commandments for the benefit of his readers and their flocks.

To help contemporary students and scholars understand fully the Handbook's richness as a historical source, the introduction situates it within the intellectual milieu of late medieval Christianity. Guido is well acquainted with the vagaries of real life in a parish and a sense of compassion underlies his directives. Evidence of readers' hands-on engagement abounds in the annotations that were written in the book's margins. Examination of both the content of such comments and their location within the text suggests how Guido's readers sought to translate his advice into practice.

Resilience and the Virtue of Fortitude: Aquinas in Dialogue with the Psychosocial Sciences, by Craig Steven Titus

Empirical research and virtue ethics find a fitting match in their respective studies of resilience and fortitude. The concept of resilience involves personal and social capacities to cope with difficulty, resist destruction under hardship, and construct something positive out of an otherwise negative situation. Although the concept is new, the human phenomenon is ancient. It has been attested to for millennia by poets, philosophers, and spiritual writers who have praised it in the language of the virtues.

In addition to examining empirical resilience research, this book offers―at philosophical and theological levels―a basis for a hearty understanding of the human person in terms of the virtues that enable human beings to overcome difficulty when they are faced with fear and suffering, or when they are in need of imaginative daring and hope. The primary such virtue is fortitude. The present study employs the thought of Thomas Aquinas and his sources on fortitude and its related virtues, while taking his dialogal method as a basis for critically appropriating reflections from other perspectives as well.

The book offers a renewed, classic vision of the human person and the ordering of the sciences as read through the complementary and, at one level, corrective insights of empirical psychosocial studies on resilience. Such a vibrant natural-law approach to ethical norms and moral development offers guidelines and a framework for understanding human resilience. Moreover, it recognizes a theological transformation of such human capacities―a spiritual resilience―by proposing the New Law of grace, Christ's teaching, and the infused virtues as vital bases for Christian ethics.

Craig Steven Titus is research professor at the Institute for the Psychological Sciences, as well as lecturer and researcher at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. In addition to serving as coeditor of Servais Pinckaers's The Pinckaers Reader, he is the editor of The Person and the Polis.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"With admirable deftness and an impressive command of contemporary research into Aquinas's moral anthropology and the psychosocial sciences, Titus brings Aquinas's moral anthropology into dialogue with modern psychology and shows how each has much to learn from the other. . . . Anyone looking for a scholarly treatment of these subjects will do well to study this important and groundbreaking work." ― Giuseppe Butera, Religious Studies Review

"In this scholarly and closely reasoned book, Titus puts the findings of psychosocial sciences into a conversation, as he calls it, with Thomas Aquinas' moral theory. Aquinas' discussion of the virtues and his philosophical anthropology in many ways anticipate some of the findings of science, so by putting the two into a detailed dynamic tension, the author enhances the value of both. He then goes on to apply these results to achieve a deeper understanding of Catholic moral theology. . . . [T]he arguments presented in this book open new territory for those interested in the study of Aquinas and the broader field of virtue ethics." ― Glen Ebisch, Catholic Library World

Diary of a Southern Refugee during the War, by Judith Brockenbrough McGuire

Judith Brockenbrough McGuire's Diary of a Southern Refugee during the War is among the first of such works published after the Civil War. Although it is one of the most-quoted memoirs by a Confederate woman, James I. Robertson's edition is the first to present vital details not given in the original text. His meticulous annotations furnish references for poems and quotations, supply the names of individuals whom McGuire identifies by their initials alone, and provide an in-depth account of McGuire's extraordinary life.

Throughout the war years, McGuire made poignant entries in her diary. She wrote incisive commentaries on society, ruminated on past glories, and detailed her hardships. Her entries are a highly personal, highly revealing mixture of family activities; military reports and rumors; conditions behind the battle lines; and her observations on life, faith, and the future. In providing illuminating background and references that significantly enhance the text, Robertson's edition adds considerably to our understanding of this important work.

Review
"The Confederacy's woman diarists left us our best inside view on the daily life of the people of the South in wartime. They had the leisure to write, were deeply invested in the war effort, and afforded a more nuanced view than many men. Standing tall among those that have survived is Judith Brokenbrough McGuire's wonderful inside portrait of life in Richmond's middle class. Thanks to editor James I. Robertson's exhaustive annotations, her daily entries cast even more light now than before, transforming what has always been an important book into a vital foundational document on the inner life of the doomed Confederacy."―William C. Davis, author of Lincoln's Men: How President Lincoln Became Father to an Army and a Nation

"Long valued by students of the Civil War, Judith McGuire's vivid account suffered from inadequate context―until now. At the hands of a master chronicler of the war, we now can read McGuire with fresh eyes and relive with her the hopes, tribulations, despondency, and endurance of a singular southern woman."―Nelson D. Lankford, editor of the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography and author of Cry Havoc! The Crooked War to Civil War, 1861

"Erudite, devout and uncompromising in her loyalty and love of Virginia and the South, Judith Brockenbrough McGuire experienced the American Civil War early as a refugee from her home in Alexandria and remained true to the Confederacy until the close of the conflict. Ably edited and annotated by the distinguished author and historian, James I. Robertson Jr., McGuire's diary exhibits the dignity and poignancy with which she confronted the many challenges and travails thrust upon her amidst the maelstrom of war."―Brian Wills, Director, Civil War Center, Kennesaw State University

"Her vivid account of life during the Civil War now includes vital details not given in the original text."―Southside Sentinel

Diary of a Southern Refugee During the War: By a Lady of Vir
By Larry Dillon
I am a student of history and am doing my final thesis on southern woman during the civil war. Thus, I have had to wade through numerous diaries to find what I am looking for. I was very impressed with this diary because it was well written and very intersting to read. I feel that it has something for everyone. It touches your heart strings with it's descriptors and the evident feeling behind them and it also gives awsome accounts of battles though letters and second-hand information. If you are in anyway interested in the civil war, then this is a wonderful book to start your journey with.

Diary of a Southern Refugee during the War
By D. R. Lynch
This book made me feel like I was right there with the people during the War. I feel it shows the readers how the people felt during that period. Although these were people of some means and the book showed you what they gave up it also let you know what the people that had little or nothing gave for their country during this period. I loved this book and know I will read it again.

A Lifestyle Changed during the Civil War
By Alicia R. Santiago
Well written book for its time, written from the perspective of a Confederate officer's wife during the Civil War in Virginia. The wealthy Southern plantation owners lost everything, not only their homes, but their way of life. Interesting read as this isn't told in history books, written in a journal format from Judith W. McGuire, wife of Capt. John Peyton McGuire.

Commentary on the Gospel of John, Books 13-21 (St Thomas Aquinas Scriptures), by Thomas Aquinas

Thomas Aquinas possessed excellent knowledge of the commentaries of Origen, John Chrysostom, and Augustine. On the basis of this foundation, he produced his own commentary on the Gospel of John as part of his task as a Master of the Sacred Page. Considered a landmark theological introduction to the Fourth Gospel, these lectures were delivered to Dominican friars when Aquinas was at the height of his theological powers, when he was also composing the Summa theologiae. For numerous reasons, the Summa has received far more attention over the centuries than has his Commentary on the Gospel of John. However, scholars today recognize Aquinas's biblical commentaries as central sources for understanding his theological vision and for appreciating the scope of his Summa theologiae.

The first English translation of Aquinas's Commentary on the Gospel of John by Fabian Larcher and James Weisheipl, originally published nearly two decades ago and long out of print, is available to scholars and students once again with this edition. Published in three volumes simultaneously, it includes a new introduction and notes pointing readers to the links between Aquinas's biblical commentary and his Summa theologiae. When a verse from the Gospel of John is directly quoted in the Summa theologiae, the editors note this in the Commentary. Aquinas's patristic sources, including Origen and Augustine, are carefully identified and referenced to the Patriologia Latina and Patrologia Graeca. The Commentary's connections with Aquinas's Catena Aurea are also identified.

The three volumes in the Commentary on the Gospel of John are sold individually and as a set.
