Few American military figures are more revered than General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing (1860–1948), who is most famous for leading the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. Enrichment abounds

In this book, General Pershing's account of his life from birth in 1860 up to 1917 enriches every reader in multiple ways. The reader learns of John J. Pershing's activities from childhood onward, and then much more: his thoughts before and after the activities, and about the persons and organizations that were with him and against him in those 57 years. Those insights are plentiful throughout, and well worth the time spent in the reading.
But the book contains many more rewards for the reader. They are the result of the insightful and diligent efforts of John T. Greenwood, Ph.D., Editor of the volume. Greenwood was able to find, evaluate, and organize thousands of pages of several unpublished versions of Pershing's life that Pershing had created with the assistance of trusted colleagues. The papers are retained at the Library of Congress's Manuscript Division.
Dr. Greenwood's efforts extended far beyond diligent and appropriate editorial functions. He conducted additional extensive research on Pershing and his activities, and the persons and situations relevant to them.
The result is a coherent autobiography that is true to Pershing's original intent while reinforcing it mightily.
Here are just a few examples of Greenwood's enhancement of the product:

Pershing's Reminiscences of Life and Service in the "Old Army"

'At his death, John J. Pershing left several drafts of a memoir dealing with his life and career before the First World War. Army historian Greenwood prepared this version by carefully editing the various drafts together, adding a number of important documents plus and supplying missing detail in a biographical appendix and extensive footnotes, which together take up about 200 pages. The result is a surprisingly frank look at life in the “Old Army” from the waning days of the Indian Wars to the eve of the Great War. Pershing can be found standing up for Native Americans, criticizing USMA practices, bucking the brass, and more. For contemporary readers, perhaps the most interesting and valuable parts of the book are his accounts of service in the “Moro War” in the Philippines, where the practices he adopted in the pacification of the historically unbowed Moslem peoples of the southern Philippines are quite contrary to those claimed by many who have commented on the subject. This is a valuable work not only for those interested in the last years of the frontier army and long forgotten campaigns on the frontier, or in Cuba, the Philippines, Manchuria (where Pershing served as an observer), and Mexico, but also for students of pacification and nation building.
