A Bridge across the Ocean: The United States and the Holy See between the Two World Wars, by Luca Castagna

A Bridge across the Ocean focuses on the relations between the United States and the Holy See from the First World War to the eve of the Second, through the combination of American, Italian, and Vatican sources. More than an overall picture of the American and Vatican foreign policy during the first half of the twentieth century, the book analyzes the U.S.-Vatican rapprochement in a multifaceted way, considering both the international and the internal sphere. A Bridge across the Ocean discusses the spread of anti-Catholicism in the United States during the first two decades of the twentieth century, and its repercussions on the American administrations' behavior during and after the Versailles Con- ference, together with the changes that occurred in the Holy See's attitude toward the American church and the White House after the election of Pope Pius XI. Luca Castagna explores the convergence of the New Deal legislation with the church's social thought, and demonstrates how the partial U.S.-Vatican rapprochement in 1939 resulted from Roosevelt and Pacelli's common aim to cooperate, as two of the most important and global moral powers in the struggle against Nazi-fascism. A Bridge across the Ocean deepens our understanding of American and church history during the first half of the twentieth Century, from the church-state relations to the identification of diplomatic strategies and priorities.

The History of Byzantine and Eastern Canon Law to 1500 (History of Medieval Canon Law), by Wilfried Hartman, Kenneth Pennington

This newest volume in the History of Medieval Canon Law series surveys the history of Byzantine and Eastern canon law. Beginning in the Patristic Age, Susan Wessel outlines the evolution of ecclesiastical law before the Council of Nicaea (325 A.D.). She covers the earliest documents and councils in the Christian tradition, and concludes that the councils replaced other sources of authority as bishops moved to a more democratic model of church organization.

Heinz Ohme then offers a detailed analysis of the Greek councils and the writings of the Greek Fathers. He treats the sources of canonical material of Byzantine canon law down to the Quinisext Council (Trullanum, 692). Spyros Troianos presents a comprehensive survey of the Greek canonical collections and their compilers from the fourth to the eleventh century. In extending his coverage to 1500, Troianos provides bibliographical and biographical information about the most important Byzantine canonists who remain virtually unknown in English language literature: John Zonaras, Alexios Aristenos, and the Byzantine Gratian, Theodore Balsamon.

With Hubert Kaufhold's contribution, the book also explores the wide range and variety of law in Eastern Christian communities, including Western Syrians (Jacobites), the Copts, Ethiopians, Armenians, Georgians, Nestorians, and Maronites.

ABOUT THE EDITORS:

Wilfried Hartmann is emeritus professor of the medieval history of canon law at the University of Tübingen. Kenneth Pennington is Kelly-Quinn Professor of Ecclesiastical and Legal History at the Catholic University of America. He is the author of numerous works including Pope and Bishops: The Papal Monarchy in the Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries and The Prince and the Law, 1200-1600: Sovereignty and Rights in the Western Legal Tradition. Hartmann and Pennington are coeditors of the History of Medieval Canon Law series.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK

"“What we have needed is a way in, a clear and concise introduction to give the neophyte the foundation he or she needs to study the material further. This is precisely what this The History of Byzantine and Eastern Canon Law to 1500 does, but it also does much more, summarizing the history of legal scholarship while presenting the results of the most up-to-date and comprehensive studies. Scholars whose work touches centrally or peripherally on canon law will benefit at least as much as the student seeking an introduction. . .This book should become a basic component of the church historian's library - indispensable both as a text to be read through in courses on church history and as a reference work." --Speculum

The Christmas Truce: Myth, Memory, and the First World War, by Terri Crocker

In late December 1914, German and British soldiers on the western front initiated a series of impromptu, unofficial ceasefires. Enlisted men across No Man's Land abandoned their trenches and crossed enemy lines to sing carols, share food and cigarettes, and even play a little soccer. Collectively known as the Christmas Truce, these fleeting moments of peace occupy a mythical place in remembrances of World War I. Yet new accounts suggest that the heartwarming tale ingrained in the popular imagination bears little resemblance to the truth.

In this detailed study, Terri Blom Crocker provides the first comprehensive analysis of both scholarly and popular portrayals of the Christmas Truce from 1914 to present. From books by influential historians to the Oscar-nominated French film Joyeux Noel (2006), this new examination shows how a variety of works have both explored and enshrined this outbreak of peace amid overwhelming violence. The vast majority of these accounts depict the soldiers as acting in defiance of their superiors. Crocker, however, analyzes official accounts as well as private letters that reveal widespread support among officers for the détentes. Furthermore, she finds that truce participants describe the temporary ceasefires not as rebellions by disaffected troops but as acts of humanity and survival by professional soldiers deeply committed to their respective causes.

The Christmas Truce studies these ceasefires within the wider war, demonstrating how generations of scholars have promoted interpretations that ignored the nuanced perspectives of the many soldiers who fought. Crocker's groundbreaking, meticulously researched work challenges conventional analyses and sheds new light on the history and popular mythology of the War to End All Wars.

Review
"In this book Terri Crocker carefully and forensically investigates perhaps the most mythologised of all First World War events. The book makes a major, revisionist contribution to our understanding of the war and its popular memory, and is essential reading for anyone interested in the real history of Christmas 1914."―Keith Jeffery, author of Ireland and the Great War

"Crocker's scholarship reveals the multiple meanings of the Christmas Truce, one of the most iconic moments in the memory of the First World War: did it offer temporary respite from the job, a fraternal bonding opportunity, or was it an anti-war rebellion? This fascinating microhistory has much to tell us about the experience of war, the way it was reported, and the shifting way in which it has been remembered."―Jenny Macleod, University of Hull

"Crocker's book will become essential reading for anyone who wishes to know how the First World War came to be understood as that 'exercise in futility' we have come to accept without question today. It is a sober corrective and a judicious revelation of how and why the myths surrounding this war have become so hard to dislodge."―Nicoletta Gullace, author of The Blood of Our Sons: Men, Women, and the Renegotiation of British Citizenship during the Great War

"[A] sharp look at the so-called "Christmas truce" of 1914, discovering that distortion has colored many accounts of it―and of World War I itself. . . . Crocker has created a work perhaps powerful enough to alter the conventional narrative of the incident. She destroys a number of misconceptions. . . . A storm of debate will no doubt ensue. . . . the discoveries may be revolutionary in World War I historiography."―KIRKUS

there are far too many strawmen and unsupported assertions to satisfy a serious reader
By Thomas P. Byrne
While the book raises some interesting questions and provides a bit of new information on the truce, there are far too many strawmen and unsupported assertions to satisfy a serious reader. For instance, the writer offers the unusual proposition that the Versailles Treaty did not lead to WW2. One never finds out if this unique viewpoint is justified since the author makes no attempt to do so. In addition, there are many smaller points with which a reader could nitpick, too many, in fact, to list here. Add in the rather hefty price tag and I can not recommend the book.

The Subject in Question: Early Contemporary Spanish Literature and Modernism, by C. Christopher Soufas

**OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC TITLE selected by Choice magazine 2007"**

The Subject in Question presents the first systematic study of "Spanish modernism" in an attempt to end Spain's literary isolation from the mainstream of early contemporary European literature. Traditionally, Spanish literature has been approached by the "literary generational model," an ultra-nationalist perspective that separates Spanish writing from its larger European modernist context. C. Christopher Soufas argues against further adherence to the generational groupings, establishing instead solid criteria for embracing the period category of modernism as a more appropriate model.

Offering a refreshing and original approach, Soufas studies various key works from late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Spain to demonstrate their important modernist characteristics. He considers the evolution of modernism in all the major genres beginning with novels by such authors as Pío Baroja, Miguel de Unamuno, Ramón María del Valle-Inclán, Ramón Gómez de la Serna, and Rosa Chacel; the poetry of Jorge Guillén, Vicente Aleixandre, Luis Cernuda, and Rafael Alberti; and the theater of Federico García Lorca.

Soufas maintains that the basis for associating Spanish literature with modernism centers on modernist attitudes toward subjectivity―that is, the modernist critique of the autonomous thinking subject. He argues that Spain had been engaging in a critique of the subjective model for centuries, long before European modernists did. Therefore, modernism marks a point of convergence and rapprochement between Spain and Europe, and Spain makes a significant contribution to that international movement.

"This work is very significant, in that it establishes the ground for a basic rethinking of how Spanish literature is to be viewed not only from a purely national and chronological perspective, but also from an international and comparatist point of view."―Margaret Persin, Rutgers University

C. Christopher Soufas, professor of Spanish at Tulane University, is author of Conflict of Light and Wind and Audience and Authority in the Modernist Theater of Federico García Lorca.

"This cogent study challenges the reader to approach Spanish letters from a different and broader perspective, one that begets a fuller awareness of the complexity and richness of contemporary Spanish literature. This groundbreaking work will have enormous import in the appreciation of Spain's considerable role in 20th-century European literature. Summing up: Essential. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty." ― F. Colecchia, Choice

"The Subject in Question makes a valuable and knowledgeable contribution to the ongoing debate about Spain's inclusion in the European cultural mainstream in the early twentieth century, through the exploration of new models of subjectivity in Spanish Modernism, and the wide-ranging revision of early twentieth-century Spanish literature." ― Katherine Murphy, Bulletin of Spanish Studies

"This work is very significant, in that it establishes the ground for a basic rethinking of how Spanish literature is to be viewed not only from a purely national and chronological perspective, but also from an international and comparatist point of view."--Margaret Persin, Rutgers University

"In this thought-provoking study, Christopher Soufas proposes a new paradigm to replace the generational model that has dominated the literary history of twentieth-century Spain. Refuting the notion of Spain's marginal relation to European modernism, he argues that early twentieth-century Spanish writers, drawing on a national tradition critical of the autonomous rational subject, made significant contributions to the modernist movement's exploration of new modes of subjectivity. Strong new readings of Baroja, Unamuno, Gómez de la Serna, Chacel, Guillén, Aleixandre, Cernuda, Alberti and Lorca back up his argument."--Susan Kirkpatrick, Professor Emeritus of Spanish Literature, University of California, San Diego

World as Word: Philosophical Theology in Gerard Manley Hopkins, by Bernadette Waterman Ward

The arresting poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins arises from philosophical engagement with the Trinity, the Incarnation, and other mysteries of Christian revelation. No previous study has explored his poetry in the light of his philosophical theology. Hopkins's thoughts on justice and language challenge today's inhuman literary theories.

With explications of more than twenty-nine of Hopkins's intricate poems and difficult prose, this study traces Hopkins's engagement with his age. New, philosophically rigorous definitions of Hopkins's key poetic terms―"inscape" and "instress"―detail exactly how he discovered the possibility of multiple true concepts of things, each grounded in reality but demanding the participation of the moral will. Doubt of the possibility of historical truth drove many Victorians to scientism or vague religious sentimentalism. Hopkins asserted that humans physically can and morally must learn truth. Haunted by a sense that experience is incommunicably singular, and aware that culture and consciousness shape history, he found support in the personalist religious epistemology of John Henry Newman. On it Hopkins formed his poetics, later enriched by John Duns Scotus's communitarian theory of justice in language. Scotus deeply influenced Hopkins's idea of poetry, coloring not only his arguments and images but the metrical and verbal music of his style.

Lovers of Hopkins's poetry will find a deeper understanding of his music; philosophers will find an epistemology and aesthetics worthy of respect. Students of literature will find a challenging theory of the relationship between linguistic structures and the world of experience. In today's intellectual environment, which treats the notion of truth as a cynical tool of politics, and deception as inherent in language, Hopkins's luminous vision of sacrificial love and community at the heart of poetry offers a refreshing antidote to the dry suspicions of academic literary theory.

Bernadette Waterman Ward is associate professor of English at the University of Dallas.

"[An] extraordinarily fine, and indeed often deeply inspiring book. . . . Ward provides dextrous and detailed readings of a number of Hopkins poems, and her discussions wonderfully integrate clarification of idea with analysis of how stylistic features (like alliteration and spring rhythm) contribute to the power of the lyrics' communications. She understands, better than many others, Hopkins' true dedication to his poetry-writing, besides recognizing his intellectual openness to such positions as 'theistic evolutionism', and his sternly chaste (but psychologically honest) dealing with admitted personal homoerotic feelings. . . . One of the most valuable Hopkins studies ever to appear."―Jeffrey B. Loomis, The Year's Work in Hopkins Studies, Victorian Poetry

"Ward's excellent study, as it reveals the confluence of intellectual and spiritual aspirations, whether viewed in their poetic or their philosophical manifestation, makes for stimulating reading. In this book, philosophers learn about poetry and poets learn about philosophy. . . . This book is a useful tool for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and specialists in literature, philosophy, or theology, as well as anyone interested in the Jesuit intellectual/spiritual tradition as it appears in the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins." Mary Beth Ingham, American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly

"[A] valuable contribution to research on Hopkins. Her scholarship is wide and solid. Although the focuses are not new, their fresh assembly is lucid and their application to Hopkins firmly demonstrated. The exposition of Scotus's influence is especially rich and suggestive in understanding the interactive dynamic of 'selving' in Hopkins' writings." David Anthony Downes, Christianity and Literature

Extremely Helpful
By Matthew E Van House
I found this to be one of the most helpful works on Hopkins that I have read. On all occasions Ward shows a respect and attention to the poet that is quite refreshing. Her unique insistence on understanding the serious importance of his intellectual formation (which included close study of Ruskin, Newman, Scotus, and Catholic sacramental theology), makes a powerful case for reconsidering the assumptions of both excesively pious critics who see in Hopkins a mystic who intuited great spiritual truths without employing his immense intellectual gifts to sort out the theological facts, and of postmodern writers who correlatively assume that Hopkins actually had a weak and degenerate mind, and that his obvious poetic gifts had nothing to do with the quality or consistency of the superstitions that he communicated using those gifts.
Ward makes her case in each chapter by communicating concisely and interestingly the key thoughts of those intellectual figures and movements that strongly influenced Hopkins, and then by very persuasively revealing the real influence of those thinkers by using their thoughts in the exposition of many of his major poems. My academic training is in philosophy, and I was especially impressed with how well the focus of the book on communicating philosophical theology in order to understand Hopkins does not prevent a serious presentation of the ideas of the thinkers in question--the treatment of Scotus, for example, reveals that Dr. Ward has read much more broadly in the writings of the difficult 13th century friar than is normal for a literary critic trying to understand what Hopkins means by the terms "instress" and "inscape," and what he means when he refers them to Scotus's philosophy.
Many have noticed the influence that poets like Shakespeare and Milton have exerted on Hopkins's imagery and sound, but this book fills a gaping hole in Hopkins scholarship by seriously exploring the tremendous influence that Hopkins's favorite philosophers, theologians, and critics had on the thought that undergirds that use of imagery and sound. Highly recommended.

Why We Fought: America's Wars in Film and History, by Peter C. Rollins, John E. O'Connor

Film moves audiences like no other medium; both documentaries and feature films are especially remarkable for their ability to influence viewers. Best-selling author James Brady remarked that he joined the Marines to fight in Korea after seeing a John Wayne film, demonstrating how a motion picture can change the course of a human life―in this case, launching the career of a major historian and novelist. In Why We Fought: America's Wars in Film and History, editors Peter C. Rollins and John E. O'Connor explore the complexities of war films, describing the ways in which such productions interpret history and illuminate American values, politics, and culture. This comprehensive volume covers representations of war in film from the American Revolution in the 18th century to today's global War on Terror. The contributors examine iconic battle films such as The Big Parade (1925), All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), From Here to Eternity (1953), and Platoon (1986), considering them as historical artifacts. The authors explain how film shapes our cultural understanding of military conflicts, analyzing how war is depicted on television programs, through news media outlets, and in fictional and factual texts. With several essays examining the events of September 11, 2001, and their aftermath, the book has a timely relevance concerning the country's current military conflicts. Jeff Chown examines controversial documentary films about the Iraq War, while Stacy Takacs considers Jessica Lynch and American gender issues in a post-9/11 world, and James Kendrick explores the political messages and aesthetic implications of United 93. From filmmakers who reshaped our understanding of the history of the Alamo, to Ken Burns's popular series on the Civil War, to the uses of film and media in understanding the Vietnam conflict, Why We Fought offers a balanced outlook― one of the book's editors was a combat officer in the United States Marines, the other an antiwar activist―on the conflicts that have become touchstones of American history. As Air Force veteran and film scholar Robert Fyne notes in the foreword, American war films mirror a nation's past and offer tangible evidence of the ways millions of Americans have become devoted, as was General MacArthur, to "Duty, honor, and country." Why We Fought chronicles how, for more than half a century, war films have shaped our nation's consciousness.

Review
"Winner of the 2008 Ray and Pat Browne Award."―

""Why We Fought is not only a thoughtful reading of war films and history, but it is a significant contribution to scholarship. Understanding why we fight is more relevant today than ever before since Americans continue to explore their national identity, their country, and themselves."―Michael K. Schoenecke, coeditor of All-Stars and Movie Stars: Sports in Film and History"―

""Although it is sometimes waged for selfish and extraneous ends, warfare is fundamental to developing human cultures. Regardless of its end, warfare continues to be depicted in documentaries and analyzed more in the imagination than on the battlefield. Battles that are re-created on the stage and silver screen depict the motivations, actual experiences, and consequences of combat. . . . This penetrating collection of essays by two of the best editors of history and film looks deeply into movies' interpretations of why we have fought and examines the ways in which war has been presented to us."―Ray B. Browne, Professor of Popular Culture, Emeritus, Bowling Green State University"―

""Peter C. Rollins and John E. O'Connor have compiled a historically sound, inclusive, and diverse, interdisciplinary portrait of American wars in film. Each essay has its own bibliography, and the ending filmography is nothing short of superb. Technically and conceptually, this book is, perhaps, the most powerful of its kind produced to date, and it will doubtlessly be lauded as a breakthrough in the studies of war films."―Robert C. Doyle, author of Voices from Captivity: Interpreting the American POW Narrative"―

""This wide-ranging and sophisticated anthology incorporates a broad spectrum of analytical perspectives that establish major film treatments of America's wars in cinematic and historical contexts, while demonstrating the synergistic relationships between the two approaches."―Dennis Showalter, Patton and Rommel: Men of War in the Twentieth Century"―

""A useful addition to an academic, arts, or film library, this book covers films based on every war fought by the United States." ―Xpress Reviews"―

""Rollins and O'Connor have assembled a rich, varied collection of essays that explore all US wars in order, from the American Revolution to Iraq. Essential." ―R. D. Sears, Choice"―

Very good but overlooks the range wars
By Rosie Perera
Fascinating history, well researched, helpful bibliographies. One disappointment was the lack of any chapter about films based on the range wars in the American West, such as the Johnson County War. I would have liked to see the author's thoughts on films such as Shane (1953), Oklahoma! (1955), El Dorado (1966), Chisum (1970), Heaven's Gate (1980), Young Guns (1988), Open Range (2003), etc.

St. John of the Cross: Songs in the Night, by Colin P. Thompson

-- One of the greatest lyrical poets in Spanish of any age, St. John of the Cross (1542-1592) enjoys an authoritative status as a theologian and teacher of the mystical road to union with God. Songs in the Night covers all his works, both poetry and prose, citing the original Spanish and providing English translations throughout. Its focus if firmly on the language through which he seeks to express the inexpressible and the theological insights he brings to the mystical way. -- Accessible and vivid, the author succeeds in the difficult task of both setting John firmly within his own Spanish and theological context, and of showing us why John's work is still relevant today. -- Readers needs this type of material simply because without it a major Christian source is virtually inaccessible to them.

Outstanding Study of St John
By Greg
In 1973 Colin P. Thompson wrote a doctoral thesis examining the poetic structure and theology of St John's great work the 'Spiritual Canticle.' Although the work became a classic in Sanjuanist studies, Colin Thompson returned with a new and much longer book that gives a very holistic study of St John, his life, his poetry, his theology, and its relevance for today.

As both a Professor of Spanish literature and lifelong scholar of St John, Colin Thompson's new work does not disappoint. It contains some excellent new work on the life of St John, particularly the importance of his formative studies at the University of Salamanca where St John studied theology, philosophy, and spirituality. Thompson shows how St John was a highly original thinker and extremely intelligent man in his own right, and not simply a blind follower of any single theological or philosophical tradition, and who was also highly creative and original in adapting material to suit what he wanted to express in his poetry and theology.

The rest of Thompson's work is mainly focused on John's poetry and the underlying symbolism and theology. At times Thompson gets a bit tedious by revelling too much in John's complex symbolism and drawing tenuous connections between some of John's ideas, but proposes a very useful schema for understanding St John's spiritual journey - moving from a selfish, grasping and egoistic approach to creation, others and God that needs to be negated by ascetic practice and the purification of the 'nights', to the enlightened deified state where the blessed person in union of God receives everything back in a completely renewed and transformed manner, seeing all creation and things 'in God.' The beautiful lira of the final stanza of the Flame are used by Thompson to highlight this point.

Thompson concludes that St John, despite being separated from us by five hundred years, still speaks vividly and relevantly to the human heart that desires freedom, truth and goodness. Despite much misinterpretation of John at the hands of some of his commentators and hagiographers, Thompson shows vividly how St John can speak to contemporary issues from the treatment of women (in contrast to many clerics St John seemed comfortable with women and had many as spiritual disciples), the proper relationship to creation (St John urges respecting the created order rather than trying to dominate, destroy or exploit it) and social justice (St John grew up in a poor, impoverished background and ministered constantly to the sick, suffering and those at the margins). This study brings St John out of the pietistic closet and turns him into a flesh and blood figure who we can relate to, while not watering down the sublime nature of his sanctity.

An admirable collection of essays about the rise of early Coptic language, literature, and social history
By Didaskalex
*****
Christianity in Egypt is described as, "was locked in an often deadly struggle against the Pagan religions of the Greco-Roman culture as well as the Gnostic movement that peaked in Alexandria spreading to other large cities."
*

The 'World of Early Egyptian Christianity', which captured increasing interest after the publishing of the Coptic Gnostic Library of Chenoboskion, is here exposed by Tito Orlandi, Birger Pearson, James Goehring, Philip Rousseau, among other eminent scholars on these fascinating and inspiring Coptic themes. The illuminating book features essays written in honor of David Johnson, S.J., professor emeritus of Coptic language, at the Catholic University of America. Book editors, Goehring and Timbie display eleven essays held admirably together, displaying some exciting cases of the significant consequence in the study of late ancient Egypt, including some recently recognized figures as Evagrius Ponticus and Shenoute of Atripe, rewriting the glory of Christianity in late antiquity Egypt. The essays cover Coptic papyrology, the history of Egyptian Christianity, interaction of Christianity with Egyptian Judaism and ancient Egyptian religions, and Coptic literature.

The history of early Christianity, being their own confessed belief, should be of continuing personal interest to today's Christians. Since Egyptians have played an important role in the early development of Christian life, Egyptian Christianity has been linked closely with Early Christian Orthodoxy. Nothing is more likely than Alexandrian Christianity gained adherents among the Therapeutae, Jewish Coenobetics, and that their communities were adapted to the new religion. Many of the oldest surviving texts of the New Testament, as Rylands P52, a scrap of papyrus dating to Ca 125 AD, was discovered in middle Egypt in 1920. Roughly the size of a business card, it bears parts of John 18:31-33 on one side and John 18:37-38 on the other. Many texts dating from early third century, have been preserved in Egypt's dry weather, including the recently discovered Gnostic Gospel of judas.

Church leaders in Alexandria, Egypt established the Didascalia, a catechetical school in founded in the late second century Alexandria, to counter Hellenistic writings that often criticized the nascent Christian religion. The Didascaleon, became the mind of Christian philosophy, enabling great teachers and orators like Clement and Origen to battle Hellenistic philosophers on their own ground, advocating Christianity in a systematic pedagogy. In this great university of Christian learning, Christianity first underwent rigorous studies that laid the foundation of its first theology and doctrines, making the new faith accessible to the elite as well as the publicans. The Didascalia, enabled the Alexandrines to bridge the gap between Dynastic Egypt and the new Christian era by promoting the use of a Greek alphabet amended with seven Demotic letters, translating the NT books as well as writing of Christian apologetics and letters, and instructing everyone on Christian faith in up to three years.

This admirable collection of essays, about the rise of early Coptic language, literature, and social history, written by the most eminent authors in the field, explores a wide range of topics, offering great support to the progress of Coptic studies. Coptology, first established as a realm of Coptic culture and tradition, by professor Aziz Atiya, was enriched by Rodolphe Kasser, Tito Orlandi, Otto Meinardus, and others. Out of American Coptologists who searched the emergence of Christianity in Egypt are two of the admirable contributors to this book; James Goehring and Birger Pearson. The essays cover a wide array of subjects as Coptic language and literature, examining the origins and history of the Coptic and monastic communities in its formative years. The Jewish content and connections of earliest Christianity in Egypt are explored, with the survival of pagan rituals in an increasingly developing Christian world.

For an AmeriCopt reviewer, who dwelt in this wonderful milieu since I was twelve, I found that Frankfurter's contribution is a bit of historical intrusion, by an outsider. On the other hand, Boyarin offers a fresh view on allegory in biblical exegesis among Jews and Christians in common era Alexandria. His analysis are stimulating, underlining the differences between the allegorical approaches of Philo and Origen, and further between allegorical exegesis and Rabbinic Midrash. Masterful Goehring focus on Shenoute of Atripe voluminous literary corpus, reflects an interest in ritual purification as purity language, shows an in depth understanding of the issues. The anti-Chalcedonian episode of Abraham of Farshut, an abbot of the Pachomian order, was music to my ears. Abraham orders that the monks wash the entire meeting place with an imperial (Chalcedonian) envoy with water "as though it were polluted by ... the emperor," in an amazing Coptic cultural education.
