The essays in this volume explore three areas in which St. Thomas Aquinas's voice has never fallen silent: sacred doctrine, the relationship of sacraments and metaphysics, and the central role of virtue in moral theology. For Aquinas, sacramental theology studies how Christ Jesus acts in the Church through created instruments, namely, the sacraments and their ministers. He remains a crucial source of wisdom for such discussions, which have profound pastoral implications. Aquinas also undertakes inquiry into human nature, human flourishing, and life in Christ. The transformation of created human capacities through the grace of the Holy Spirit requires a careful integration of philosophical and theological reflection, for which Aquinas's moral theology has proven pastorally fruitful and spiritually energizing over the centuries.
The authors consider the treatment of these themes in light of, and in tribute to, the wide-ranging work of Aquinas scholar Romanus Cessario, O.P. The essays highlight the importance of St. Thomas Aquinas in contemporary theology and exemplify how to draw upon the resources of the saint for contemporary purposes of appropriation and practice, rather than for strictly historical purposes. Throughout, one sees the importance of St. Thomas Aquinas for theology today.

A REAL ressourcement
By Matthew
This book is a collection of excellent essays dedicated to Fr. Romanus Cessario, O.P. written by some of the best Thomistic authors working today. It is divided into three parts:
Part I: Sacred Scripture and Sacred Doctrine
Part II: Sacraments and Metaphysics
Part III: Moral Theology
Each essay is to be treasured and it truly does an honor to Fr. Cessario. I highly recommend these essays as helpful guides to reading the true master himself: St. Thomas.
It is obvious that the previous reviewer did not read the book (as she noted) and is not familiar at all with the authors of the essays. While she is certainly right that Thomas' philosophy and especially his metaphysics are foundational for any theology, this is accepted by the authors themselves! In fact, some of the authors are themselves first-rate Thomistic metaphysicians (for example, Steven A. Long, Lawrence Dewan, O.P. and Fr. Thomas Joseph White, O.P.). One should not be worried that these authors have a more modern philosophical take in which they are trying to fit Thomas' theology. Each of them presupposes a rigorous Thomistic philosophy as each essay bears out. These are such good THEOLOGICAL essays because of the rich PHILOSOPHICAL foundations that these authors presupposes and argue for.

ressourcement without his philosophy?
By Mary Ann Parks
I haven't read the book but want to make a cautionary remark. One cannot have a ressourcement to Thomism without his metaphysics and epistemology. Without it, any ressourcement becomes deformed in a Platonist direction. Today, Thomistic philosophy is commonly misunderstood in a Kantian manner by way of Lonergan's epistemology, which ends up in the self-consciousness. JPII said the renewal of philosophy and its relation with theology will come through a refounding of metaphysics on esse.
