The Primacy of Persons in Politics: Empiricism and Political PhilosophyFrom Brand: The Catholic University of America Press

What is the nature of political activity? This question has vexed political thinkers since Plato wrote Statesman and remains challenging today. Contemporary intellectual categories obstruct individuals from understanding politics as a distinct species of activity with its own
realm of expertise, modes, and ends. Instead politics is poorly directed by notions of achieving a complete or final end of affairs. It tends to be conflated with other types of activities and realms of life, including economics, power-seeking, and law and procedure. As a result, politics often is untethered from morality.

Taking as their departure point the political-philosophical analyses of German scholar Tilo Schabert, the philosophical and empirical essays in this volume invite the reader to move beyond the sterile dichotomy of political activity as either pure will or as folded into a more manageable activity. The contributors argue that politics is a highly creative human activity that eludes capture within a final and static analytical framework, concluding that ethical political action is indeed part of the essence of politics.

ABOUT THE EDITORS:

John von Heyking, professor of political science at the University of Lethbridge,
Alberta, Canada, is author of Augustine and Politics as Longing in the World and
Friendship and Politics: Essays in Political Thought, and editor of two volumes in
the Collected Works of Eric Voegelin series. Thomas Heilke is professor of political science and director of the Center for Global and International Studies at the University of Kansas. His many published works include From Ideologies to Public Philosophies and Great Ideas/Great Schemes: Political Ideologies in the 19th and 20th Centuries. Besides the editors, the contributors are Dan Avnon, Toivo Koivukoski, András Lánczi, Erik Neveu, Tilo Schabert, David E. Tabachnick, and Alexander Thumfart.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"This is precisely the sort of book that all political scientists should read. Tilo Schabert's
work, and the elaboration of it in this volume, offers theoretical tools for understanding
the world of politics that are missing from the positivist approach. Not only will this affirm the 'usefulness' of political theory to non-political theorists, it might also remind political theorists themselves to re-engage the 'empirical' aspect of their own vocation. This volume is a testament to the continued salience of political theory and should be required reading for all those who aspire to a career in the discipline."―Richard Avramenko, assistant
professor of political science, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Toward Freedom Land: The Long Struggle for Racial Equality in America, by Harvard Sitkoff Ph.D.

The ongoing struggle for civil rights and social justice lies at the heart of America's evolving identity. The pursuit of equal rights is often met with social and political trepidation, forcing citizens and leaders to grapple with controversial issues of race, class, and gender. Renowned scholar Harvard Sitkoff has devoted his life to the study of the civil rights movement, becoming a key figure in global human rights discussions and an authority on American liberalism.

Toward Freedom Land assembles Sitkoff 's writings on twentieth-century race relations, representing some of the finest race-related historical research on record. Spanning thirty-five years of Sitkoff 's distingushed career, the collection features an in-depth examination of the Great Depression and its effects on African Americans, the intriguing story of the labor movement and its relationship to African American workers, and a discussion of the effects of World War II on the civil rights movement. His precise analysis illuminates multifaceted racial issues including the New Deal's impact on race relations, the Detroit Riot of 1943, and connections between African Americans, Jews, and the Holocaust.

From the Inside Flap

The son of Jewish immigrants, Harvard Sitkoff has experienced first hand discrimination and prejudice. While studying at Queen's College he participated in numerous protests against social injustice, particularly racial inequality. Since then, Sitkoff has established himself as one of the nation's most respected historians of race relations by illuminating the complicated dynamics of the African American struggle for equality.

Toward Freedom Land: The Long Struggle for Racial Equality in America offers an authoritative collection of Sitkoff's seminal works from his 40 years of research. This volume details the origins and evolution of the civil rights movement, particularly the effects of the Great Depression on African Americans, the relationship between African American workers and the labor movement, and the influence of World War II on racial equality. Toward Freedom Land also provides insight into pivotal moments in American history, such as the New Deal's impact on race relations and subsequent events, including the Detroit Riot of 1943.

Sitkoff's writing focuses primarily on individuals at the local level, emphasizing the different social, political, and economic factors that influenced the progression of the movement and revealing Sitkoff's own shifting views and approaches to history.

Toward Freedom Land allows readers to witness both the development of the African American role in society as well as Sitkoff's evolving methods of research and documentation. Sitkoff's works continue to be pivotal to scholarship concerning racial equality in the United States, providing captivating insight into the most significant social changes in US history.

Eucharistic Presence: A Study in the Theology of Disclosure, by Robert Sokolowski

In this insightful, interdisciplinary study, Robert Sokolowski uses the methods of phenomenology to examine Christian religious beliefs, particularly the sacrament of the Eucharist. In so doing, he comes to terms with many theological and cultural issues raised by modernity. Although the Eucharist is the center of focus, other issues in Christian faith are also examined, such as the Christian understanding of God, Creation, the Incarnation, Redemption, and biblical Revelation.

Sokolowski employs a method that he calls "the theology of disclosure," which studies the structures of appearance and should be distinguished from both positive and scholastic theology. He takes appearances as objective disclosures, not as mere psychological events. When discussing the Eucharist, he shows how it uses the form of quotation and how it draws on various temporal dimensions of human existence as it reenacts the sacrifice of Christ before the eternal Father.

The author also considers how Christian belief differs from other forms of religion and from modern atheism. By demonstrating how the Christian understanding of God differs from other ways of understanding the divine, he attempts to show that Christianity is not simply one religion among many but the truth of religion.

These deeper themes are explored as necessary contexts for the Eucharist, which could not be properly understood except against the background of the Christian understanding of God as eternal and as Creator and Redeemer. The author provides a comprehensive theological treatment of major issues in Christian faith and does so with categories that are appropriate to our present intellectual and cultural world.

This study, which draws upon the work of many classical and contemporary theologians, especially Hans Urs von Balthasar, contributes significantly to speculative theology and to Eucharistic studies. It will be of great use to theologians and philosophers, as well as to students of Christian philosophy and sacramental theology.

Robert Sokolowski, a priest of the Archdiocese of Hartford, has taught philosophy at The Catholic University of America since 1963. He has written six books and numerous articles dealing with phenomenology, philosophy and Christian faith, moral philosophy, and issues in contemporary science. He has been an auxiliary chaplain at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., since 1976 and was named monsignor in 1993.

"Indispensable for graduate and divinity programs with interests in Catholic theology and phenomenology of religions.―Religious Studies Review

"Intellectually stimulating. . . . The author contributes many insights to the theology of the Eucharist, some of which I had never seen before and found enlightening and moving. The depth of his scholarship is obvious."―Rev. James T. O'Connor, St. Joseph's Seminary, New York

"A careful reading of this profound analysis of the Holy Eucharist will be rewarded with a more fruitful participation at Mass. Here we find a modern model of the Catholic theologian who shows us in the concrete how to practice 'faith seeking understanding.'"―Kenneth Baker, S.J., Editor, Homiletic and Pastoral Review

I enjoyed this book quite alot. I learned a bit about phenomonology. I thoroughly enjoyed the exposition of the Eucharist. It was quite well presented and in a way I hadn't previously encountered, but which is perfectly sound. Of course, the eucharist recalls the last supper, which itself precedes the crucifixion. It all seems more of a whole though after this read.

I found the eucharistic exegesis sandwiched between the phenomenological theory though. They were both treated quite separately from each other. There is no direct linking. This is why I gave a four.

Even a Protestant Can Agree
By Micah D. Tillman
If you've ever wondered what in the world Catholics were talking about when they speak of the presence of Christ in the bread and wine, this book is a major step forward in making that doctrine make sense.

Msgr. Sokolowski is one of the foremost philosophers of phenomenology and consequently is very good at explaining how things are presented to, made present to, or appear to humans. His is a philosophy that simply makes sense.

Working from the foundation of the "Christian Distinction" between God and World, Sokolowski shows how the Sacrifice of Christ can be made present to us (and how we can be made present to it) in the Eucharist even 2000 years later. This is his second book on the "Theology of Disclosure" (the first being "The God of Faith and Reason") and it will change how you look at the world.

Even Protestants (like myself) can agree with what Msgr. Sokolowski says in this book. Not only can we agree, but we can gain a new understanding of and appreciation for one of the central Christian performances.

This is an awesome review of how symbol and sign impacts the depth of Catholic Theology. It provides a deeper understanding of what sign and symbol is and how we have lost this meaning.

Reflections on Freedom of Speech and the First Amendment, by George Anastaplo

The guarantee of free speech enshrined in the U.S. Bill of Rights draws upon two millennia of Western thought about the value and necessity of free inquiry. Acclaimed legal scholar George Anastaplo traces the philosophical development of the idea of free inquiry from Plato's Apology to Socrates to John Milton's Areopagitica. He describes how these seminal texts and others by such diverse thinkers as St. Paul, Thomas More, and John Stuart Mill influenced the formation and the earliest applications of the First Amendment. Anastaplo also focuses on the critical free speech implications of a dozen Supreme Court cases and shows how First Amendment interpretations have evolved in response to modern events. Reflections on Freedom of Speech and the First Amendment grounds its vision of America's most basic freedoms in the intellectual traditions of Western political philosophy, providing crucial insight into the legal challenges of the future through the lens of the past.

Review
"Drawing on the Socratic tradition in political philosophy as well as on British and American traditions of constitutional law, Anastaplo shows why freedom of speech is essential to republican government."―Eugene F. Miller, University of Georgia

"Anastaplo's understanding of the importance of thoughtful speech for good government allows him to offer chapters on individuals and books or documents that standard treatments of the first amendment do not cover."―Murray Dry, author of Civil Peace and the Quest for Truth: The First Amendment

"Distinctive, self-assured, audaciously unconventional, and challenging. Those within Anastaplo's circles will want to look at this book for its skilled and precise rendition of established fare. And those outside those circles, who are less familiar with Anastaplo's concerns, or even those ill-disposed toward those circles, should yet find the book worth careful reading and deliberation."―Ira L. Strauber, Grinnell College, Law & Politics

About the Author
George Anastaplo, professor of law at Loyola University in Chicago and lecturer in the liberal arts at the University of Chicago, is the author of numerous books, including Reflections on Constitutional Law and The Constitutionalist.

Freedom and Necessity: St. Augustine's Teaching on Divine Power and Human Freedom, by Gerald Bonner

Aurelius Augustinus (354-430), bishop of Hippo Regius (the modern Annaba in Algeria), is considered one of the outstanding thinkers in Western Christian civilization, Catholic and Protestant alike. Particularly influential has been his pessimistic doctrine of divine predestination, which holds that only a small proportion of humanity has been selected by God for salvation, while the overwhelming majority, including all unbaptized persons, are damned. Yet, paradoxically, Augustine's exposition of the Eucharistic unity of the elect in the Body of Christ, his Christology, and his emphasis on love as the principal mark of the Godhead have provided a pattern for Christian devotion and spirituality down through the ages.

This book seeks to explain this paradox in Augustine's theology by tracing how these different emphases arose in his thought, and speculating as to why he endorsed, in the end, his theology of predestination. The book is intended not only for students of theology and church history, but even more for readers attracted to Christian doctrine. Written in straightforward language, it supplies adequate references to original sources for those wishing to further pursue the subject.

The author, a historian turned theologian, has studied Augustine for more than sixty years and seeks neither to extenuate nor to condemn him, but to depict his thought. His book will prove fruitful for all who engage it.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Gerald Bonner is university reader emeritus at the University of Durham. From 1991 to 1994 he was distinguished professor of early Christian studies in the School of Religious Studies at the Catholic University of America. He is the author or editor of several books including St. Augustine of Hippo: Life and Controversies and The Monastic Rules.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"As a well-known and respected Augustinian scholar, Gerald Bonner does a masterful job of shedding light on this paradox found in the writings and sermons of Augustine. . . . His book will prove very helpful not only to the person already engaged in the study of Augustinian theology but also the initiate as well." ― John C. Meyer, Catholic Books Review

"Covering a varied range of topics within the confines of a book of merely 142 pages is a remarkable tour de force, something which only an erudite Augustine scholar such as Gerald Bonner is able to accomplish. . . . The author's lucid literary style, with its meticulous choice of wording, makes this book a pleasure to read and a storehouse of quotable phrases. He amply demonstrates his familiarity with various writings of Augustine (his anti-Pelagian writings, epistles, sermons, early dialogues, and, of course, his masterpieces (Confessions, De civitate Dei, De Trinitate)), which greatly contributes to the richness of the work. This fine study not only provides a refreshing, balanced view of Pelagianism, it does the same of Augustine. . . . Each chapter of this concise publication contains such a wealth of insights and enough food for thought to make it worth reading again and again." ― Geert Van Reyn, Augustiniana

"Bonner writes with sensitivity and complexity on Augustine's views of freedom, responsibility, and predestination. One senses his bafflement and disappointment with an Augustine he clearly loves who could not see his way to rejecting the shocking consequences of his predestinarianism." ― Speculum

"This book is the fruit of many years of thought and writing. Its author writes with a clarity which reflects this quiet maturing of its conclusions. . . . Bonner is visibly working out not just what Augustine really thought and why, but what is to be made of it by the modern believer, including himself. This is an approach Augustine himself would have warmed to. He liked nothing better as an author than an honest working out of experimental an

Interesting but superficial
By Steve Harrison
This is a simplified overview of some of the investigative methods and scientific techniques used to determine whether documents and artifacts are antique or fake. None of the science is explained in any detail -- the book is not, in fact, greatly informative; Nickell is more investigator than scientist -- but the accounts of particular cases he has handled are interesting.

Christian and Pagan in the Roman Empire: The Witness of Tertullian (Selections from the Fathers of the Church)From Brand: Catholic Univ

Among the voices that come across the centuries from early Christianity, few speak with sharper accents, or in more highly colored tones, than that of Tertullian. First in the Latin-speaking West to leave a major corpus of writings, Tertullian is also the first in the West to address in both treatise and tract the issues confronted by Christians in their encounter with the surrounding pagan world.

Tertullian belonged to an era when Roman imperial power was at its height and paganism could proudly claim the blessings of the widespread Roman civilization. Though it was an officially tolerant world, unofficially it was suspicious of the politically incorrect: challenging social structures was an act of unthinkable bravado. Tertullian took on the challenge.

Before his conversion, Tertullian appears to have participated fully in his contemporary pagan culture. A Carthaginian, his education was thoroughly Roman; he was fluent in Latin and Greek, and widely read in literature, philosophy, rhetoric, and medicine. His conversion to Christianity brought to him a radically new vision of the world, while his pagan education provided him with the tools to express that vision with almost unparalleled power. He possessed a logic that penetrated through misty ambiguities to the heart of things; he practiced a formulaic style that sharpened inherent contrasts; and he refined a narrative art that enriched theology with vignettes of the pagan and Christian worlds of his day.

Tertullian is a primary source for a modern understanding of the issues that once confronted―and still confront―Christians living in a non-Christian world. Unfortunately, his writings have often been cast aside as too difficult to read. In this volume, Robert D. Sider undertakes a judicious pruning of the original texts and brings a fresh accessibility to the important writings of Tertullian.

"A very helpful anthology of [Tertullian's] works in an inexpensive and accessible format, one which allows modern readers to encounter a difficult and challenging writer by providing both context and annotation. . . . Sider's greatest contribution stems from his experience at reading and understanding Tertullian's rhetoric. He enables the reader to engage Tertullian and understand his argument on its own terms. . . . This volume should serve well as an introduction to Tertullian for upper-level undergraduates or for graduate students new to the world of early Christianity."―Michael Heintz, Journal of Early Christian Studies

Robert D. Sider is professor emeritus of classical languages at Dickinson College and adjunct professor of history at the University of Saskatchewan. A leading expert on Tertullian, he is the author or editor of many works, including the popular text Ancient Rhetoric and the Art of Tertullian.

The Bible on the Question of Homosexuality, by Innocent Himbaza, Adrien Shenker, Jean-Baptiste Edart

The Bible on the Question of Homosexuality addresses the hotly debated topic of whether the Bible condemns homosexuality by a close reading of the biblical texts without taboo or prejudice, without personal or church interpretation. The authors--three Christian exegetes, two Catholic and one Protestant--are interested in discovering what the Bible says about homosexuality. They take seriously the world from which the biblical text emerges, and discuss the hermeneutical challenges raised by scripture. They deal with the full range of issues raised by homosexuality in the Bible including Jesus' own sexual orientation and his relationship with the Beloved Disciple. Their conclusions are modest though their comprehensive overview is significant.

Innocent Himbaza begins the work by looking at the entire range of Old Testament texts and examining the often-cited discussions of homosexuality: Sodom and Gomorrah, the outrage at Gibeah (Judges 19), the relationship between Jonathan and David, and the relationship between Saul and David.

Next Adrien Schenker addresses the question: Why did the Law of Moses forbid homosexual relations (Leviticus 18 and 20)? Schenker also examines such issues as the death penalty for those caught in homosexual relationships within the proper historical context and the significance of these Levitical passages within the perspective of biblical theology.

The third and final section of the book looks at homosexuality within the New Testament. Jean-Baptiste Edart first examines the Pauline texts (1 Corinthians 6 and 1Timothy 1; Romans 1). He then examines Jesus and the healing of the centurion's slave in Luke 7, Jesus' relationship with the Beloved Disciple, Jesus' attitude toward homosexual acts, and finally the commandment of love.

Though many books are available on the topic of homosexuality and the Bible, most advance a particular ideology. This book, while not a moral treatise on homosexuality, intends only to clarify, without a predetermined interpretation, what the Bible actually says on the subject.

The Modernist as Philosopher: Selected Writings of Marcel Hébert, by Marcel Hebert

Roman Catholic Modernism, in France, was prominently represented by scholars whose interests were, in significant measure, historical. Notable examples are Louis Duchesne, Alfred Loisy, and Albert Houtin. Where philosophy was concerned, Maurice Blondel, together with his collaborator Lucien Laberthonnière, grappled with the legacy of Kant and the problem of the subjectivity of human knowing. Marcel Hébert (1851 -- 1916) stands at the confluence of these two tendencies.

Hébert's appreciation of the exegesis of scripture and its subsequent development in church tradition was importantly shaped by both Loisy and Duchesne. And like Blondel and Laberthonnière, he felt the insufficiency of scholasticism to speak to minds formed by modernity, to formulate an adequate response to the philosophical legacy of Kant. He acknowledged his debt to Duchesne and Loisy in history, but regarded himself, though an autodidact, their superior in philosophy. As Loisy may represent a case study of how modern historical consciousness impacted a mind formed by the traditional Catholic theology and piety, so Hébert may serve as a case study in the impact of modern philosophical consciousness on one also formed by traditional Catholicism.

This volume, the first to be published in English about Hébert, is essential for a full understanding of Catholic Modernism. The articles translated in this volume show Hébert's early attempt to find common ground between Aquinas and Kant, the impact of Kant on a symbolist reading of dogma intended to "save" dogma for Catholics coming to terms with modern exegesis and modern philosophy, the radical lengths to which he took that symbolist reading, and his eventual break with Catholicism when the Church failed to be receptive to this program.

Included here are selected articles, the entire second of edition of Pragmatisme, William James's review of the first edition and Hébert's response to it, and a review by Eugène Ménégoz.
