The Philosophy of Horror (Philosophy Of Popular Culture)From Brand: The University Press of Kentucky

Sitting on pins and needles, anxiously waiting to see what will happen next, horror audiences crave the fear and exhilaration generated by a terrifying story; their anticipation is palpable. But they also breathe a sigh of relief when the action is over, when they are able to close their books or leave the movie theater. Whether serious, kitschy, frightening, or ridiculous, horror not only arouses the senses but also raises profound questions about fear, safety, justice, and suffering.

From literature and urban legends to film and television, horror's ability to thrill has made it an integral part of modern entertainment. Thomas Fahy and twelve other scholars reveal the underlying themes of the genre in The Philosophy of Horror. Examining the evolving role of horror, the contributing authors investigate works such as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818), horror films of the 1930s, Stephen King's novels, Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of The Shining (1980), and Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960). Also examined are works that have largely been ignored in philosophical circles, including Truman Capote's In Cold Blood (1965), Patrick Süskind's Perfume (1985), and James Purdy's Narrow Rooms (2005). The analysis also extends to contemporary forms of popular horror and "torture-horror" films of the last decade, including Saw (2004), Hostel (2005), The Devil's Rejects (2005), and The Hills Have Eyes (2006), as well as the ongoing popularity of horror on the small screen.

The Philosophy of Horror celebrates the strange, compelling, and disturbing elements of horror, drawing on interpretive approaches such as feminist, postcolonial, Marxist, and psychoanalytic criticism. The book invites readers to consider horror's various manifestations and transformations since the late 1700s, probing its social, cultural, and political functions in today's media-hungry society.

From the Inside Flap

Whether through film, television, or popular fiction, horror engages audiences like no other genre. From the classic novel to the latest slasher flick, horror has struck fear in the hearts of generations of readers and viewers across the centuries. The thrill and exhilaration generated by a terrifying story not only excite the senses but also raise important questions about safety, justice, suffering, and other human concerns.

The Philosophy of Horror examines why horror fascinates fans by exploring the social, moral, and artistic statements of the genre. Editor Thomas Fahy has assembled a team of scholars to investigate topics as diverse as the genre itself. From classic films such as Psycho (1960) and The Shining (1980) to contemporary and highly controversial torture-horror films like Hostel (2005) and the Saw series, the contributing authors trace the development of horror as a form of art and entertainment. The Philosophy of Horror explores the underlying philosophical concepts of classic horror fiction, such as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, as well as works that have been largely ignored in philosophical circles, including Truman Capote's In Cold Blood and Patrick Süskind's Perfume.

Together the essays follow the evolution of the horror genre across the decades, investigating the theoretical underpinnings of each work in the context of its time. This diverse collection explores horror from a variety of perspectives and draws on a wide range of interpretive approaches, including feminist, postcolonial, Marxist, and psychoanalytic criticism. The result is a comprehensive study of fundamental questions about morality, identity, social constructions, and other topics raised in horror narratives.

The Philosophy of Horror confirms what horror fans have known for decades -- horror is not only entertaining but also deeply insightful. Inviting readers to ponder this genre's various manifestations since the late 1700s, this collection of probing essays allows fans and philosophy buffs alike to view horror narratives with fresh eyes and consider their dark themes within the framework of philosophy. The Philosophy of Horror is a celebration of a strange, compelling, and disturbing tradition in art and entertainment. Horror not only excites and entertains audiences; it also leaves them searching for answers.

Readable Highbrow Horror
By S. P. Miskowski
When I read Thomas Roger's Salon interview with Thomas Fahy I was seized with a desire to read this book. I received a review copy of the hardback edition for Shock Room Horror.

Fahy and his fellow writers display impressive academic authority on topics ranging from "Ideological Formations of the Nuclear Family in The Hills Have Eyes" to "Zombies of the World, Unite: Class Struggle and Alienation in Land of the Dead" and "Grotesque, Sublime, and Postmodern Transformations in Patrick Suskind's Perfume." Given the background and professional credits of these scholarly authors you might think this is not going to be a light or entertaining read. I had the same feeling when I looked at the table of contents. Once I began reading, however, I was delighted to find that most of the essays are thought provoking and far more accessible than I imagined.

Highlights:

In "Horror and the Idea of Everyday Life: On Skeptical Threats in Psycho and The Birds" Philip J. Nickel poses the argument that "horror's bite...is a malicious ripping-away of...intellectual trust, exposing our vulnerabilities in relying on the world and on other people." This ripping-away is, however, far from detrimental to our well-being. In fact it is necessary for us to occasionally admit the delusion of our security in order to achieve "clarity about our actual situation" and to "realize that we can still go on, even in the absence of perfect certainty."

Thomas Fahy wrote "Hobbes, Human Nature, and the Culture of American Violence in Truman Capote's In Cold Blood." Fahy begins with Thomas Hobbes' assertion that a sovereign must provide moral justice in a world otherwise made chaotic by our natural tendency toward self-preservation at the expense of others. He then turns to the narrative of In Cold Blood to examine what happens in a close-knit society when the sovereign (in this case, the highly respected farmer Herb Clutter) is removed by an act of random, apparently inexplicable violence.

John Lutz considers the manner in which Stanley Kubrick opened up on a larger canvas the themes of masculinity, cycles of violence, and oppression in his adaptation of Stephen King's novel. This chapter is titled "From Domestic Nightmares to the Nightmare of History: Uncanny Eruptions of Violence in King's and Kubrick's Versions of The Shining." I strongly recommend the essay to fans who have seen the film numerous times, because I think you will find surprising, new insights into an adaptation that has been unfairly maligned by some critics over the years. It only deepened my appreciation for the ways in which Kubrick and his writing collaborator Diane Johnson took time to study the themes and motifs in King's novel. The team didn't simply shoot a movie version of the book. They created a richly layered, dynamic visual equivalent for every significant aspect of the story. Their version provided a historical and social context framing the domestic abuse, without sermonizing.

Anyone who rails against the genre because it presents disturbing and indelible images, or displays the worst of human actions, fails to recognize the valid and complex reasons why horror has lasted so long, and the extent to which it can both validate and challenge our deepest emotions. Seen together, the essays in The Philosophy of Horror demonstrate the range and diversity of purposes served by horror films and fiction.

Being Hal Ashby: Life of a Hollywood Rebel (Screen Classics), by Nick Dawson

Hal Ashby (1929–1988) was always an outsider, and as a director he brought an outsider's perspective to Hollywood cinema. After moving to California from a Mormon household in Utah, he created eccentric films that reflected the uncertain social climate of the 1970s. Whether it is his enduring cult classic Harold and Maude (1971) or the iconic Being There (1979), Ashby's artistry is unmistakable. His skill for blending intense drama with off-kilter comedy attracted A-list actors and elicited powerful performances from Jack Nicholson in The Last Detail (1973), Warren Beatty and Julie Christie in Shampoo (1975), and Jon Voight and Jane Fonda in Coming Home (1979). Yet the man behind these films is still something of a mystery.

In Being Hal Ashby: Life of a Hollywood Rebel, author Nick Dawson for the first time tells the story of a man whose thoughtful and challenging body of work continues to influence modern filmmakers and whose life was as dramatic and unconventional as his films. Ashby began his career as an editor, and it did not take long for his talents to be recognized. He won an Academy Award in 1967 for editing In the Heat of the Night and leveraged his success as an editor to pursue his true passion: directing. Crafting seminal films that steered clear of mainstream conventions yet attracted both popular and critical praise, Ashby became one of the quintessential directors of the 1970s New Hollywood movement.

No matter how much success Ashby achieved, he was never able to escape the ghosts of his troubled childhood. The divorce of his parents, his father's suicide, and his own marriage and divorce―all before the age of nineteen―led to a lifelong struggle with drugs for which he became infamous in Hollywood. And yet, contrary to mythology, it was not Ashby's drug abuse that destroyed his career but a fundamental mismatch between the director and the stifling climate of 1980s studio filmmaking. Although his name may not be recognized by many of today's filmgoers, Hal Ashby is certainly familiar to filmmakers. Despite his untimely death in 1988, his legacy of innovation and individuality continues to influence a generation of independent directors, including Wes Anderson, Sean Penn, and the Coen brothers, who place substance and style above the pursuit of box-office success.

In this groundbreaking and exhaustively researched biography, Nick Dawson draws on firsthand interviews and personal papers from Ashby's estate to offer an intimate look at the tumultuous life of an artist unwilling to conform or compromise.

Being Truly Independent
By James Sturch
I've written capsules on Lean, Losey, and Hawks, all fine directors, yet; we finally have a biography that surpasses my interest on those mentioned. This was a quiet release, much like Hal himself I suppose. Quiet, unassuming, peaceful? How can anyone not love the beauty of Harold and Maude? The synthesis of talent in The Last Detail? Being wholly independent has no real relevance now in film. It doesn't exist. It doesn't exist in the 'indie' world of film, nor in Sundance. Like everything else that was once pure, the notion of being independent is now corrupt. Hal Ashby was the last detail in the world of truly independent artists. Finally, we have a biography on the man. It's a straightforward, chronological account of the editor / director with evident research, detail, and care for Hal. There's been little since, personally, I continued to refer back to an old issue of Premiere magazine, Oct 2006, that featured a decent profile of Ashby. Another profile showed up on the Internet, which revealed the many current directors paying tribute to their 'favorite' Hal Ashby films. That was it. Thank you Mr. Dawson for your steadfast pursuit on writing this fine account. No other director was made a strand of films in this certain Hal vein: The Landlord, Harold and Maude, The Last Detail, Shampoo, Bound for Glory, Coming Home, and Being There. The tone and spirit were consistent in all his films, a spirit that rested in a love for life and a pursuit for all things pure, which define an independent spirit. Battling producers toward the end, Hal remained true to this spirit, as a great artist should. This is a great book. This is the end.

Hal Ashby WAS the shore patrol, mother f&*$@r!
By jgc
Ashby was once a solidly A-list director, helming pictures that were not only startling and fresh in their time but which still hold up extremely well (which is why his work speaks to so many contemporary directors--most obviously Wes Anderson, whose style owes an enormous debt to Ashby, particularly his work in 'Harold and Maude'). In the '70s, he delivered five classic films in a row; this remarkable winning streak can go toe to toe with the work in that decade by Coppola, Altman, and Scorsese. And yet, while those directors have been celebrated to the gills (rightfully so), Ashby has fallen into something that looks an awful lot like obscurity. A tragic--but not totally surprising--fate for this workhorse, this hippie workaholic who routinely took on extra responsibility, was almost freakishly generous, and rarely got his due.

Author Dawson spent a decade researching and writing this biography, and the results do shed much light on Ashby's life. But aside from filling in the factual gaps, the book seeks to recognize Ashby's artistry, clarifying what his specific strengths were and refuting the absurd idea that this deep and protean artist was merely a hired gun. Invariably it was those films confiscated and re-cut by the suits that tanked; most of the films on which Ashby was allowed to complete his vision were commercial and critical hits. Dawson also debunks Ashby's rep as a drug casualty: while Hal did love his weed, and famously slept only a few hours per night, the book makes it clear that he remained professional to the end.

Sometimes I wish that Dawson were more penetrating--in regard to the films as well as the psychology of the subject himself--but in terms of raw material, this book is an invaluable first step in re-evaluating a great but strangely forgotten artist.

HE IS MY UNCLE
By Guy T. Ashby
Hal is my dad's brother. I know Nick Dawson did a lot of research for this book. I thought it came off pretty well. A fair look at a charming scoundrel. The family has never been sure if he was a real artist or just unable to balance his life. The book cleared up some parts of his early life and career and made me want to see some of his films again.

The Price of Freedom: Slavery and Manumission in Baltimore and Early National Maryland, by T. Stephen Whitman

A stereotypical image of manumission is that of a benign plantation owner freeing his slaves on his deathbed. But as Stephen Whitman demonstrates, the truth was far more complex, especially in border states where manumission was much more common.

Whitman analyzes the economic and social history of Baltimore to show how the vigorous growth of the city required the exploitation of rural slaves. To prevent them from escaping and to spur higher production, owners entered into arrangements with their slaves, promising eventual freedom in return for many years' hard work. The Price of Freedom reveals how blacks played a critical role in freeing themselves from slavery. Yet it was an imperfect victory. Once Baltimore's economic growth began to slow, freed blacks were virtually excluded from craft apprenticeships, and European immigrants supplanted them as a trained labor force.

The Breckinridges of Kentucky, by James C. Klotter

Across more than six generations―beginning before the Revolutionary War―the Breckinridge family has produced a series of notable leaders. These often controversial men and women included a presidential candidate, a U.S. vice president, cabinet members, generals, women's rights advocates, congressmen, editors, reformers, authors, and church leaders. Along with success, the Breckinridges, like other Americans, faced hardship and war, contended with race, lived through difficult family situations―including a sex scandal―and encountered personal and political failure. An articulate, opinionated, and frank family, the Breckinridges have left a detailed record that allows us a vivid recreation of the range of American history and society.

Of all the military assignments in Vietnam, perhaps none was more challenging than the defense of the Mekong River Delta region. Operating deep within the Viet Cong–controlled Delta, the 9th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army was charged with protecting the area and its population against Communist insurgents and ensuring the success of the South Vietnamese government's pacification program. Faced with unrelenting physical hardships, a tenacious enemy, and the region's rugged terrain, the 9th Division established strategies and quantifiable goals for completing their mission, effectively writing a blueprint for combating guerilla warfare that influenced army tacticians for decades to come.

In The 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam: Unparalleled and Unequaled, Ira A. Hunt Jr. details the innovative strategies of the 9th Division in their fight to overcome the Viet Cong. Based on Hunt's experience as colonel and division chief of staff, the volume documents how the 9th Division's combat effectiveness peaked in 1969. A wealth of illustrative material, including photos, maps, charts, and tables, deepens understanding of the region's hazardous environment and clarifies the circumstances of the division's failures and successes.

A welcome addition to scholarship on the Vietnam War, The 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam will find an audience with enthusiasts and scholars of military history.

Review
"The 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam is exceptionally significant because it addresses the very controversial topic of the large-scale operations of the 9th Division in the Mekong Delta." ―Maj. Gen. (ret) David T. Zabecki, 9th Infantry Division Vietnam veteran and author of The German 1918 Offensives: A Case Study in the Operational Level of War"

"General Hunt set about proving that the claims of the 9th Infantry Division's brilliant performance in Vietnam were founded on fact. He succeeded and far more. The book provides fascinating insight into the counterinsurgency war that characterized the Vietnam conflict. While analytical and data driven, his story is enlivened by well-placed anecdotal evidence of brilliance and courage. The adaptability of leaders and soldiers alike leads one to understand the successes of the U.S. Army that many thought impossible in this sort of conflict. A valuable contribution to the history of this controversial war."―Jack N. Merritt, General, U.S. Army, Retired"

"a by-the-numbers look at the only U.S. Army infantry division that was activated and trained stateside specifically to fight in Vietnam." ― The VVA Veteran"

"When Ewell and Hunt. . . arrived at the 9th Division in mid-1968, they knew the previous eighteen months of the division's efforts had produced few headline victories and were certain that a new methodology was needed for success. They chose detailed statistical analysis of every part of the division's efforts. . . This book details this analysis system, replete with tables of figures and narrative accounts of the methodology used to test and implement new tactics and schemes of maneuver support." ― On Point"

"This outstanding book is a must read for those trying to understand teh Vietnam War and its guerrilla warfare tactics."―Post Library"―

This book is a very well detailed and factual story of what really happened. It brought back a lot of memories. Being with the 9th Inf Div during the start up at Ft Riley and deployment to Vietnam was a very formative experience in my military career. memories of the 3rd Bde and Dong Tam, Tan An, plus Bearcat are again fresh memories.

Some 4/39 soldier's remember the battle
By byron e holley md
General Hunt's book is a fitting tribute to the fighting men of the 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam. They fought and lived in one of the harshest environments of any U.S. soldier in history. As Battalion Surgeon of the 4/39th Battalion I cared for many casualties from that mad war deep in the heart of the Mekong delta. I remember the battle of Thanh Phu quite well. One of my friends and fellow soldiers Lt. John Roberson, a Citadel graduate, lost two fingers off his left hand in that battle due to "friendly fire" in the form of rockets and mini-guns being fired from a Cobra helicopter. One of my closest friends to this day, Sgt. Thomas Aiken, remembers trying to hide behind a tree "no bigger than a broom handle" to escape the onslaught of hot lead. The readers of this book might want to read a personal and detailed account of the battle written by Col.David H.Hackworth, Btn. CO as well as accounts from interviews with some of the grunts on the ground. These accounts can be found in Chapter Nine of STEEL MY SOLDIERS' HEARTS, a very candid book which draws heavily from interviews with soldiers who were there for the battle. It was my privilege to serve these brave young men.

Great book
By panther
All I will say is read it before you review it! Unlike all the one star reviews, you will find that the reasons for their great success is rather simple. That reason is that the 9th had more mobility that any other div in Vietnam with river, track/road and air. Also the fact that the VC/PAVN retreated back to their base areas after the heavy mauling they took during Tet/Mini Tet.
These two primary factors enabled the 9th to hit the enemy with everything at their disposal without fear of hitting friendlies as the base areas were unpopulated. Its a great read and I would say give it a go before listing to the usual Far left propaganda.

Sport and Christianity: A Sign of the Times in the Light of FaithFrom Brand: The Catholic University of America Press

The modern world is dominated by sport. The Olympics and the World Cup are seen by billions of television viewers from around the globe. When Pope Benedict travels to foreign countries, typically the only venues large enough to hold the crowds for a papal Mass are sports arenas, such as London's Wembley Stadium. In response to the call of popes and the Second Vatican Council to read the signs of the times, Sport and Christianity explores the connections between these two seemingly disparate phenomena. It reflects on what the fascination for sport reveals about the human person and to what degree sporting activities are compatible with, and can even advance, the church's mission.

The book discusses the attitude toward sports presented in the Old and New Testaments and in the writings of the church fathers. This leads naturally to a study of Christian anthropology , the relationship between God and man, as well as the connection between the body and the soul. There is an extensive look at sports as viewed by recent popes, including Pope Pius XII―who denounced the use of drugs in sports as early as 1955―as well as Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. The editors pose provocative questions such as, what is Christian about sport, and how can we make sport more Christian? Ideally teamwork, pursuit of a common goal, and trying for excellence are laudable, but winning at all costs or the subjugation of Sundays to football are not. Last, given that some countries send priests as chaplains to the Olympic games and some professional sports teams have chaplains, there is a section on how to give pastoral advice to those who work in the sports professions.

Not only a brilliant refutation of proportianalism
By Anthony McCarthy
This concise book is a much needed defence of the idea that there are exceptionless moral norms. Modernist theologians will not enjoy the way in which Finnis shows that their espousal of a proportianalist ethic is completely at odds with the entire Christian tradition. As well as thoroughly documenting the manipulation of textual evidence made by theological proportionalists, Finnis pungently demonstrates the philosophical incoherence of their position. In so doing, Finnis has many interesting things to say about the nature of freedom, and its relation to moral absolutes, and how our relation to intelligible goods and integral human fulfillment generates unconditional oughts in a way that doesn't fall foul of the Naturalistic fallacy. The final chapter of the book suggests that the proportianalist philosophy took hold amongst certain heterodox Catholic thinkers in an attempt to justify contraceptive sexual acts. The result of this attempt has been to promote an ethic which rejects not only the Church's teaching on contraception, but also the idea of any exceptionless moral norms. The irrationality of the arguments used in favour of proportionalism suggests a motivation on the part of modern theologians, far removed from the pursuit of truth. Admirers of Finnis will not be disappointed by this book, which furthers his reputation as one of the most important Natural Law thinkers.

On the Cessation of the Laws (Fathers of the Church Medieval Continuations), by Robert Grosseteste

Robert Grosseteste was an unusual and exceptional man: from the lowest social class yet greatly admired by kings and popes; a scientist but also a philosopher and theologian; a talented administrator and a successful teacher; a pastor doggedly devoted to the care of his flock but also a scholar dedicated to the translation of early Christian fathers and Aristotle; loyal to the pope but fearless and bold in calling for the reform of the curia.

On the Cessation of the Laws directly reflects the profundity and originality of Grosseteste's theological work and indirectly reveals his pastoral concerns. The work consists of four books. In the first, Grosseteste offers arguments mostly from Scripture against the position that he wishes to defend and then counters these arguments with a lengthy treatment of the whole economy of creation and salvation and the place of the Scriptures, Old and New, in it. The second attempts to show from clear Old Testament texts that the crucified Jesus was the savior promised in the Law. The third is dominated by theological arguments for the incarnation of Christ even if humanity had not sinned, and the fourth addresses a cluster of questions that follow upon the death of the Law.

In On the Cessation of the Laws, Grosseteste draws out the theological, christological, and soteriological issues implicit in the question of the relationship between the Old and New Covenants.

Discourses Against Judaizing Christians (Fathers of the Church Patristic Series), by Saint John Chrysostom

St. John Chrysostom's Discourse Against Judaizing Christians are eight homilies or sermons with a unifying theme: the correction of certain abuses in a fourth-century Christian community. Judged by modern tastes the Discourses may seem lengthy, and Chrysostom himself admits that they taxed his energies when he complains of having become hoarse. In Antioch of the late fourth century two highly divisive forces contributed to deteriorating Judaeo-Christian relations: very successful Jewish proselytizing, and Christian Judaizing. Both activities profoundly disturbed a vigilant leader and eloquent preacher such as Chrysostom was.

These Discourses, frequently interrupted by applause from the audience, present in their historical context one facet of the deteriorating relations. Antedating Chrysostom by some two centuries, emerging views that the Jews were a people cursed and dispersed in punishment for their unbelief and deicide were gaining credence; witness some statements by Irenaeus in Lyons and Tertullian in northern Africa. In the course of time certain passages of sacred Scripture began to be reinterpreted, when occasion presented itself, in such a way as to endow the polemics with divine authority.

A simplistic view of the complex problem of anti-Semitism raised the cry, almost a century ago, that the Church nurtures hatred against the Jews and at the same time protected them from the fury she had unleashed. However, on October 28, 1965 Vatican Council II issued a decree: Declaration on the Church's Attitude Toward Non-Christian Religions (cf. Acta apostolicae sedis 58 (1966) 740-44). Therein the Council officially re-affirmed the common religious patrimony of Jews and Christians. It clearly rejected any alleged collective guilt of the Jewish people for the death of Christ and their alleged rejection of God.

A timely reminder of persistent trends in Christianity
By scrivener
This translation of St John Chrysostom's famous homilies against the Jews, "Kata Ioudaion," or as rendered by the translator "Discourses Against Judaizing Christians," is a timely reminder of the tendency among some Christians to revert to Judaism.

While the term "Judeo-Christianity" is often heard and used today as if the two religions were one, as these homilies make clear, they are not. Indeed, this Doctor of the Roman Catholic Church, who is also revered by the Orthodox Churches, makes the differences stark and clear. He denounces Christians who obscure those differences, and would meld the two faiths together. And, as the translator aptly notes, the homilies are directed against Christians principally, not Jews. Of course, St John Chrysostom's writings have figured importantly in many pogroms against the Jews throughout history, and so this work is of significant historical, as well as theological interest.

While Jewish readers may disagree with St John Chrysostom's negative characterization of many key elements of Judaism, they will also find this a worthwhile read to help understand the important differences between Judaism and Orthodox Christian dogma.

I strongly recommend this work to all who have an interest in the cultic and philosophical differences between Judaism and Christianity.

important work for our day
By MJG
Even though this translation is prefaced by a post Vatican II editor lamenting Chrysostom's discourses as 'fodder for anti semitism' this book clearly demonstrates the mind of the early Church at how seriously this issue was looked at as far as anyone claiming to be a Christian needed to avoid giving scandal as regards the profession of the faith - and that means not showing ANY other religious group any kind of an indifferent attitude, which of course thanks to Vatican II's embracing of basically masonic ecumenism is rampant in what used to be the Apostolic Catholic Church. Chrysostom's language may seem harsh to our modern ears but....he is clearly spelling out the seriousness of not denying Christ and not placating others who don't agree with Christianity by fawning over them or giving them the "I'm ok, you're ok" modernist attitude that is so rampant today. He brings up pagans as well so it's not just on Judaizing.

We live in a time when Christians who still feel or believe as the early Church taught on this subject - as Chrysostom clearly, again, conveys, are liable to lose their heads if the new world order has it's way. The passage of "hate crimes" legislation in many countries has and will make it a crime for any Christian to tell anyone of another 'faith - whether Moslem, Jewish or pagan or even atheist, that they need to believe in Jesus Christ to save their soul in eternity. This is the entire reason for Christianity to exist in the first place - Go therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. He who believes and is baptized shall be saved. He who believeth not shall be condemned. Now, if you do not believe in Jesus Christ as the Messiah (which obviously the Jews do not or they wouldn't be Jews) this might cause you to be upset by this work (though personally I think if you think you are in the truth you really shouldn't let others disagreeing with your position bother you but..), but for any Christian who is deeply concerned by recent effusions not only from the post Vatican II Church telling the Jews that Jesus isn't their Messiah and that they are ok to "wait for another" which Jesus clearly states in Holy Writ will be the Antichrist - other protestant sects have followed suit such as the Presbyterians - those Christians who are upset and dismayed by such blatant denials of Christ and His Stature as King of Kings and Lord of Lords would do well to read Chrysostom's work while it is still available.

Response to T. Kalamaras "Scrivener's" comment that Judeo-Christianity are separate faiths
By schwent
"Judeo-Christianity" is not one religion ONLY because the Roman Catholic Church ("RCC") made that decision 350 years after Jesus' crucifixion. In 155 AD, Polycarp of Smyrna (a direct pupil of the Apostle John) went to Rome to try to persuade the bishop not to switch Passover to Easter Sunday (*a Roman tradition), as Passover had been always observed by John the disciple of our Lord, and by other apostles [as recorded by Irenaeus, an Ante-Nicene Church father]. In 193 AD, Polycrates, bishop of Ephesus, was excommunicated (along with all Quartodecimen aka Christians who kept the Passover) by the Roman bishop Victor for observing the Christian Passover on the 14th of Nissan (like the Jews) and not switching it to a Easter Sunday. Polycrates claimed that he was simply following the practices as taught by the Apostles John and Philip, and leaders Polycarp and Melito of Sardis. If the Jewish feasts were abolished by God, then WHY does He say in Zechariah 14:16-19 that in the Messianic Era, ALL NATIONS will come to Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot)? It's amusing that after all the laws in 360 AD forceably removed Jewish traditions from the church, 20 years later John Chrysostom was still having to address this issue several times a year. If Christians want to celebrate the Jewish feasts, LET THEM. Judaism always held that righteous Gentiles were not bound to the law of Moses; righteous Gentiles were only bound to the Noahide laws (the 7 laws given to Noah by God in Genesis 9), and in 50 AD (being 20 years after Jesus' crucifixion) at the Council of Jerusalem, the Jewish church narrowed this down to 4 laws for the Gentile believers in Acts 15:28,29. My point? The early Jewish church recognized that the Gentile church had a different set of rules to follow. But ironically, after pagan Roman Emperor Constantine legalized (Gentile) Christianity at the Council of Nicea (325 AD), around 360 AD, the Council of Laodicea made Judeo-Christianity ILLEGAL and changed the Sabbath to Sunday. See Canons 29, 37 and 38. (*c.100 AD in the Apostle John's vision [Revelation 3:14-22], Jesus gave a prophetic warning to the church of Laodicea). The Council of Laodicea (representing the Gentile church) FORCED the Jews and Christian Judaizers out of the church. John Chrysostomus' book contributed to the church entering the Dark Ages (500 AD) and indoctrinated Catholics with anti-Semitism and centuries of Jewish persecution. How many descendants of Jesus' brothers and of the Apostles were murdered by the Church? The Apostle Paul said in Romans 10:1 - Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. If true Christianity isn't supposed to be the fulfillment of Judaism (being, the coming of the Jewish Messiah), then what is it? Romans 11:24 says: "For if you (Gentiles) were cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and were grafted contrary to nature into a good olive tree (Jewish Israel): how much more shall these (Jews), which be the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?" Are Judeo-Christians wrong because they don't follow the Catholic creed? [*NOTE: Any Jewish people reading this, please understand that from 380 - 1500s AD, the Roman Catholic Church were NOT Christians. Other Christian groups (the Protestants) were not tolerated and were also tortured/murdered during the Inquisition by the RCC (*also responsible for the Crusades, which murdered Greek/Roman Orthodox Christians, too). Jan Huss, a Protestant church reformer, was burned at the stake for his "heretical" beliefs that didn't agree with the RCC, as were many other Protestant reformers.]
