The Philosophical Life: Biography and the Crafting of Intellectual Identity in Late Antiquity (Patristic Monograph Series), by Arthur P. U

Ancient biographies were more than accounts of the deeds of past heroes and guides for moral living. They were also arenas for debating pressing philosophical questions and establishing intellectual credentials, as Arthur P. Urbano argues in this study of biographies composed in Late Antiquity. With its origins in the competing philosophical schools of Hellenistic Greece, the genre of the "philosophical life" provided verbal portraits of paradigmatic figures - usually rulers and philosophers - that epitomized diverse approaches to knowledge, piety, and the virtuous life. An eruption of biographical literature in Late Antiquity attests to a similar, but more intense, struggle to influence the future directions of religion, education, politics, and morality in the Roman Empire as leaders of Neoplatonism and Christianity engaged one another through historical figures.

In a close analysis of the texts and the circumstances surrounding their composition, he argues that the production of biographies was a standard competitive practice among Greek educated intellectuals. Christian thinkers who wrote biographies, for the most part bishops, simultaneously
drew upon the literary and philosophical education they shared with their rivals and challenged it. Proposing alternate histories and new paradigms of philosophy, including ascetics and women, they came to terms with the past and aimed to shape a new Christian future. Urbano traces the transformation of the late Roman empire through the lens of biographies which debated such issues as proper worship, access to God, politics, ethnicity, gender, and philosophic pedigree. He covers the writings of several Christian and Neoplatonist authors between the 3rd and 5th centuries to demonstrate how biographical literature played a significant role in the transformation of Rome into a Christian empire.

The Dunning School: Historians, Race, and the Meaning of ReconstructionFrom University Press of Kentucky

From the late nineteenth century until World War I, a group of Columbia University students gathered under the mentorship of the renowned historian William Archibald Dunning (1857–1922). Known as the Dunning School, these students wrote the first generation of state studies on the Reconstruction―volumes that generally sympathized with white southerners, interpreted radical Reconstruction as a mean-spirited usurpation of federal power, and cast the Republican Party as a coalition of carpetbaggers, freedmen, scalawags, and former Unionists.

Edited by the award-winning historian John David Smith and J. Vincent Lowery, The Dunning School focuses on this controversial group of historians and its scholarly output. Despite their methodological limitations and racial bias, the Dunning historians' writings prefigured the sources and questions that later historians of the Reconstruction would utilize and address. Many of their pioneering dissertations remain important to ongoing debates on the broad meaning of the Civil War and Reconstruction and the evolution of American historical scholarship.

This groundbreaking collection of original essays offers a fair and critical assessment of the Dunning School that focuses on the group's purpose, the strengths and weaknesses of its constituents, and its legacy. Squaring the past with the present, this important book also explores the evolution of historical interpretations over time and illuminates the ways in which contemporary political, racial, and social questions shape historical analyses.

Review
"No other existing book examines the whole corpus of "Dunning" scholarship; the individual essays are solidly grounded in primary sources; the evaluation of the books of the various authors is clear, judicious, and timely; and the subject matter will be of great interest to most historians of the South"―John B. Boles, author of The South Through Time: A History of an American Region

"William Dunning and the historians he trained or was associated with early in the twentieth century both affected and reflected how Americans viewed Reconstruction and the history of race relations. This study is the first attempt to explain and analyze the lives and work of these historians as a unit. A superb contribution to the history and historiography of the era of the Civil War and Reconstruction, to the study of the historical profession, and to the study of race, racism, and progressivism in America."―Michael Green, author of Lincoln and the Election of 1860

"Students of Reconstruction will be fascinated by this superb, bracing, and insightful collection of beautifully crafted essays. For expertly editing and gathering these essays, we are indebted to John David Smith and J. Vincent Lowery, not least because they help us understand with unusual and sobering precision that what we write today is heavily influenced by past historiographies. The Dunning School will become essential reading for anyone interested in the writing of history and the enduring meaning of Reconstruction."―Mark Smith, Carolina Distinguished Professor of History, University of South Carolina

"The Dunning School provides important, groundbreaking studies of the authors of the first scholarly histories of Reconstruction in the southern states. Expertly introduced by John David Smith, these essays trace the careers and contributions of William Archibald Dunning himself and eight of his students, as well as those of Dunning's own mentor, John W. Burgess. It is well known that these writers collectively shaped both academic and popular interpretations of Reconstruction as a foolish, if not criminal, enterprise that deservedly failed in its attempt to guarantee full civil and political rights to emancipated slaves. But their views, and their books, were more diverse than is commonly understood, and we learn here how both the experiences of individual authors, and their adherence to the new professional ideal of "scientific" history, influenced their studies. The Dunning School is thus a significant contribution, not just to the historiography of Reconstruction, but also to southern intellectual history more broadly and to the history of the historical profession."―J. William Harris, author of The Hanging of Thomas Jeremiah: A Free Black Man's Encounter with Liberty

"The idea behind this book is so good and so sensible that historians will be scanning their bookshelves, surprised that no one thought to do it before."―Georgia Historical Quarterly

The Letters of Thomas Merton and Victor and Carolyn Hammer: Ad Majorem Dei GloriamFrom University Press of Kentucky

Poet, social justice advocate, and theologian Thomas Merton (1915–1968) is arguably the most influential American Catholic author of the twentieth century. In his short lifetime, he penned over seventy books and maintained a brisk correspondence with colleagues around the globe. However, many Merton scholars and fans remain unaware of the significant body of letters that were exchanged between the Trappist monk and Victor and Carolyn Hammer.

Unable to leave his home at the Abbey of Gethsemani except on special occasions, Merton developed a unique friendship with this couple from nearby Lexington, Kentucky. Carolyn, who supplied Merton with many of the books he required for his writing and teaching, was a founder of the King Library Press at the University of Kentucky. Victor was an accomplished painter, sculptor, printer, and architect. The friendship and collaborations between Merton and the Hammers reveal their shared interest in the convergence of art, literature, and spirituality.

In this volume, editors F. Douglas Scutchfield and Paul Evans Holbrook Jr. have collected the trio's complete correspondence for the first time. Their letters, arranged chronologically, vividly demonstrate a blossoming intellectual camaraderie and provide a unique opportunity to understand Merton's evolving philosophies. At times humorous, often profound, the letters in this volume shed light on a rare friendship and offer new insights into the creative intellect of Thomas Merton.

[. . .] There is [. . .] very much to enjoy in these letters [. . .]"―Merton Journal

As the new millennium approaches, our scientific knowledge of the universe surpasses that of any previous age. Yet, paradoxically, the philosophy of science movement is now in disarray. The collapse of logical empiricism and the rise of historicism and social constructivism have effectively left all of the sciences without an epistemology. The claims of realism have become increasingly difficult to justify, and, for many, the only alternatives are probabilism, pragmatism, and relativism.

But the case is not hopeless. According to William A.Wallace, a return to a realist concept of nature is plausible and, indeed, much needed. Human beings have a natural ability to understand the world in which they live. Many have suggested this understanding requires advanced logic and mathematics. Wallace believes that nature can more readily be understood with the aid of simple modeling techniques.

Through an ingenious use of iconic and epistemic models, Wallace guides the reader through the fundamentals of natural philosophy, explaining how the universe is populated with entities endowed with different natures― inorganic, plant, animal, and human. Much of this knowledge is intuitive, already in people's minds from experience, education, and exposure to the media. Wallace builds on this foundation, making judicious use of cognitive science to provide a model of the human mind that illuminates not only the philosophy of nature but also the logic, psychology, and epistemology that are prerequisite to it.

With this background, Wallace sketches a history of the philosophy of science and how it has functioned traditionally as a type of probable reasoning. His concern is to go beyond probability and lay bare the epistemic dimension of science to show how it can arrive at truth and certitude in the various areas it investigates. He completes his study with eight case studies of certified scientific growth, the controversies to which they gave rise, and the methods by which they ultimately were resolved.

The Modeling of Nature provides an excellent introduction to the fundamentals of natural philosophy, psychology, logic, and epistemology.

William A. Wallace has taught philosophy of science at the University of Maryland since 1988. For twenty-five years prior to that, he taught both the philosophy and history of science at The Catholic University of America. He served with distinction as a naval officer during World War II, following which he entered the Dominican Order, being ordained a priest in 1953. He has published sixteen books and more than three hundred scholarly articles.

Excellent synthesis

Fr Wallace has an wonderful little gem here. Reflecting his experience both as a physicist and a philospher in the tradition of Aquinas and Aristotle, Wallace demonstrates how Aristotelian philosophy of nature, that of form, prime matter, powers, etc. coalesces nicely with the current understanding of modern physics, biology, and chemistry. One need not be a science or philosophy major to follow Wallace; he does a very good job of relating scientific and philosophical concepts in a manner that makes them interesting to the layperson. Highly recommended for anyone interested in how ancient and medieval philosophy coincides with the discoveries of science and modern physics.

The Expert Scientist
By Melissa Wood
William Wallace presents himself and science, philosophy, physics, and astronomy very well in this book. I can only imagine how many years of research it took to find all the information. There are five main sections to the first part of the book. In part 1, the Philosophy of Nature, Wallace explains how power comes from different parts of nature. Those being vegetative, animal, human and physical. Nature itself is in the form but Wallace's main historian in chapter one is Aristoltle. The four causes of every sensible reality are matter, form, agent and end. Nature acts towards an end. In chapter 2, Modeling the inorganic, Wallacefirst tries to describe the difference between an atom and a molecule. We are elements and compounds just like every other thing is on the earth, wether inorganic or organic. All of the elements in the periodic table are composed of the same elementary particles. Cosmology tells us how th universe came to be, which started with a certain protomatter. In chapter 3, Plant and animal structures, Wallace goes on to speak of species:are actula natural kinds thgat result from processes at work in nature and are therefore manifestations of nature itself. All living organisms derive their energy from the sun, and then metabolize, and engage in the essential feature of all living things-homeostasis. Also, there are added powers when organic (living) things come into play. Reproductive power, developmental power, homeostatic power and metabolic control. Animal powers go on to include external senses, internal senses, behavioral response and motor power. Chapter 4, the Modeling of the Mind, tries to emphasize that the use of mental representations is essential to understanding cognitive processes in animals and humans. Knowing has both an objective and subjective character. Aristotle's four internal senses: the central (common sense), the imagination, estiminative sense and memory are all part of the higher human powers. Chapter 5, Human nature, describes the only two faculties that make humans different from animals. The Intelect and the will. Part two of the entire text really is the magnificent part-years of research, organizing and selection have seemingly gone into trhe generation of this text. Chapter 6, Defining the philosophy of science, names all the idea makers of science chronologically. Bacon, Descartes, Locke, Hume, Kant, Whewell, J.S. Mill, Mach, Pierce, Poincare, Kuhn, Popper, Lakatos, Harvey, Newton etc. Chapters 8, 9, and 10 go deeper into proving the earth is round, how ellipses are formed, motion parallax and many other astonomical measures. Wallace truly proves that he is a philosopher of science-debating, cutting up, agreeing with the many different thinkers our time has allowed. How much longer canthe earth take all of this?

This is a fabulous approach to understanding how modern science plays a role in a greater appreciation of one's belief and in the fulfillment of Revelation.

A Sacred Kingdom: Bishops and the Rise of Frankish Kingship, 300-850 (Studies in Medieval and Early Modern Canon Law), by Michael Moore, M

Over a period of some five centuries, Europe was transformed by the emergence of barbarian kingdoms in the regions of the former Roman Empire. In the turbulent post-Roman world, the Christian church and its bishops had considerable sway, as these kingdoms developed new institutions such as Christian kingship. Warlike kingdoms competed with each other and took on projects of political consolidation, religious accommodation, and conversion. Religious imperatives shaped the understanding of political culture, alongside aristocratic consensus and cooperation. The Franks ultimately dominated Europe and built a great empire, pursuing a doctrine of missionary warfare. Carolingian kings and nobles were mobilized by a religiously saturated ideology and by the appeal of an aggressive and expansionist political order.

Throughout these changes, bishops played a guiding role. Their special garments, liturgies, and hairstyle indicated their character as a priestly brotherhood, set apart from the rest of society, whose task was to regulate the affairs of men and ensure the benevolence of God. The function of bishops as a cohesive religious order, and their collaboration with kings, meant that their ideas had a special prestige. By their blessings bishops could protect crops, houses, and even the kingdom and its warriors. By their mastery of laws--canon, Roman, and barbarian--the bishops grasped the right nature of the social order and indicated to others God's plan for the world.

Drawing on the records of nearly 100 bishops' councils spanning the centuries, alongside royal law, edicts, and capitularies of the same period, this study details how royal law and the very character of kingship among the Franks were profoundly affected by episcopal traditions of law and social order.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Michael Edward Moore is associate professor of medieval and European history at the University of Iowa.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"A masterly survey of the five hundred years in Gaul/Francia after the dissolution of the Roman Empire. It is elegantly and beautifully written, and Moore's impressive mastery of scholarship in some seven languages attests to his impressive command of the field. This book comprises a major new interpretation of the genesis of Frankish culture through the thought and actions of a Gallic episcopacy."--Sally N. Vaughn, professor of history, University of Houston

"Moore's emphasis on the role of episcopal models for royal office is both novel and engaging. His command of the secondary literature is impressive and his readings of primary sources are nuanced . . . This is a subtle, well-argued monograph that will greatly enrich our understanding of the early Middle Ages; it should be required reading for anyone interested in the religion and politics of the era." --Journal of Ecclesiastical History

"The book presents an excellent and nuanced understanding of early medieval kingship that situates it firmly in an ecclesiastical tradition stretching back to the Roman Empire. Michael Edward Moore is a legal historian at heart . . .yet this is no mere history of ecclesiastical law." -The Historian

Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans, Books 6-10 (Fathers of the Church Patristic Series), by Origen

This volume completes the first English translation of Rufinus's Latin version of Origen of Alexandria's Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans and contains Origen's detailed exegesis of Romans 6:12-16:27. Origen's much neglected Commentary, which stands out in splendid isolation at the fountainhead of Greek and Latin exegesis, is now completely accessible to English readers.

In Books 6-10 Origen carries through to completion his program, begun in Books 1-5, of defending human freedom and of opposing the natural predestinarian doctrine of the sects founded by the Gnostic heretics Marcion, Valentinus, and Basilides. These schools relied heavily on texts from Paul, interpreted in isolation from the rest of Scripture, not only to deny free will but to support the doctrine that salvation is determined by the nature one receives at birth, whether good or evil. In contrast Origen clarifies passages in Romans by citations from Paul's other letters, from the Gospels, and from the Old Testament. He attempts to construct a coherent and unified "biblical theology." Origen views human beings as chosen or rejected by God deservedly; everyone has it within his own power whether he becomes a servant of God or of sin, a vessel of wrath or of mercy.

Whether one sympathizes with Origen's interpretations or finds them infuriating, it is difficult not to admire his concordance-like mind at work as he tackles the apostle Paul's greatest epistle. Readers will find interesting and thought-provoking discussions of all the important theological themes and terms of Romans: faith, hope, love, works, justification, election, law, Israel, Gentiles, Church, sin, death, flesh, body, glory, etc. The importance of these discussions is magnified by the fact that they stand alone in their detail and breadth and stem from the Church's most important theologian of the third century. Moreover, because Origen's work was productive in subsequent centuries in Rufinus's Latin translation, the Commentary is of outstanding importance for the history of New Testament exegesis.

Committed to Victory: The Kentucky Home Front During World War II (Topics In Kentucky History), by Richard E. Holl

When World War II broke out in Europe in September 1939, Kentucky was still plagued by the Great Depression. Even though the inevitably of war had become increasingly apparent earlier that year, the citizens of the Commonwealth continued to view foreign affairs as a lesser concern compared to issues such as the lingering economic depression, the approaching planting season, and the upcoming gubernatorial race. It was only the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that destroyed any lingering illusions of peace.

In Committed to Victory: The Kentucky Home Front During World War II, author Richard Holl offers the first comprehensive examination of the Commonwealth's civilian sector during this pivotal era in the state's history. National mobilization efforts rapidly created centers of war production and activity in Louisville, Paducah, and Richmond, producing new economic prosperity in the struggling region. The war effort also spurred significant societal changes, including the emergence of female and minority workforces in the state. In the Bluegrass, this trend found its face in Pulaski County native Rose Will Monroe, who was discovered as she assembled B-24 and B-29 bombers and was cast as Rosie the Riveter in films supporting the war effort.

Revealing the struggles and triumphs of civilians during World War II, Holl illuminates the personal costs of the war, the black market for rationed foods and products, and even the inspiration that coach Adolph Rupp and the University of Kentucky basketball team offered to a struggling state. Committed to Victory is a timely and engaging account that fills a significant gap in the literature on a crucial period of American history.

Review
"A very informative and interesting look at a fascinating yet frightening era in the history of the state, nation, and world. Holl has produced an interesting, well-written, well-researched, and detailed account of the traumatic years of World War II on the American home front, and most especially in the Bluegrass State."―Nancy Baird, professor emeritus, special collections library, Western Kentucky University

"Well researched, this work places a fresh emphasis on many issues, including the environment, labor relations, and the wartime economy. It is an important study."―James Klotter, State Historian of Kentucky

"Richard Holl's work is an important addition to the existing literature on the state-level home front during World War II that weaves complex issues into a cohesive story of how Kentucky contributed to the United States war effort. His careful analysis of the economic, political, and social developments that affected Kentucky during the early 1940s adds to our national understanding of how the war affected the lives of people on the home front and how they adjusted to the stress and change of wartime experiences."―Jerry Sanson, Louisiana State University at Alexandria

"Deeply researched and clearly written, Committed to Victory provides a wide-ranging and detailed account of Kentucky's society, economy, and politics during World War II, one that effectively includes national perspectives and illuminating individual stories.  The book is a valuable addition to the literature on the World War II home front and thus to our understanding of the war's impact on the United States."―John W. Jeffries, author of Wartime America: The World War II Home Front

"Thoroughly researched and employing a wealth of sources from across the Commonwealth, Committed to Victory offers a comprehensive examination of Kentucky's World War Two home front. Offering an impressive array of economic and demographic detail, as well as personal stories, this work charts the remarkable effects of the war on Kentucky. Arising from the devastation of the Great Depression, the WWII home front offered new opportunities for all Kentuckians regardless of race or gender. Committed to Victory, however, also recognizes that not every development was purely positive. Consensus was not automatic. Despite the demands for labor that allowed for the economic advancement of blacks and women, for example, they both felt the strains of gender and racial discrimination. Price controls, rationing, and wages levels caused their share of conflicts. Further, while the state may have experienced "politics as usual," many Kentuckians―both as families and as individuals―felt the strains of global conflict. Fortunately, however, Kentucky's home front mobilization contributed significantly to the country's success in World War II. In the end, given its balance, its inclusiveness, and its comprehensiveness, this work makes a tremendous contribution to Kentucky's twentieth century story."―Thomas Kiffmeyer, Associate Professor of History, Morehead State University

"Committed to Victory places readers alongside ordinary Kentuckians, allowing them to see the impact the war had not only on Kentucky, but on the lives of ordinary citizens of the Commonwealth."―Broadway World

[...] Holl illuminates the personal costs of the war

Committed to Victory is a timely and engaging account that fills a significant gap in literature on a crucial period of American history"―Bob Edmonds, McCormick Messenger

"[. . .] Revealing the struggles and triumphs of civilians during World War II, Holl illuminates the personal costs of the war, the black market for rationed foods and products and even the inspiration that Coach Adolph Rupp and the University of Kentucky basketball team offered to a struggling state."―Kentucky Alumni

From the perfect mint julep to benedictine, from a classic hot brown to cheese chutney, Kentucky's Best captures the full range of the state's culinary delights. Linda Allison-Lewis combines traditional and gourmet dishes, offering recipes from all parts of the state and from beloved restaurants and inns.

Start with a mouth-watering soup from Amelia's Field Country Inn or experience the wonderful smell of the Seelbach Hotel's Sourmash Bourbon Bread as it bakes in the oven. The Authentic Southern Cooking Bible!
By Nicholas Frederick
Ms.Lewis brings a culinary treasure tale to her readers. The recipes are time tested and do not disappoint. It's a fine blend of elegant creations, and down home hearty favorites that revive memories of your Southern Grandmother on Sunday. This is the definitive work on Kentucky cuisine and her collaboration with some of the finer Kentucky chefs spread the rich tradition of the Bluegrass state in style. Burgoo, Cheese grits, and Kentucky bourbon sauces lay the foundation for a book that is well worth the read. Apologies to Emeril, but this book kicks southern cooking up a notch!

Not the best Kentucky cookbook I have read
By C. Gaither
I was so excited when I saw the title of the cookbook. I collect cookbooks and have many from all over the world. I make a point in collecting Kentucky cookbooks as I grew up in the state and always look forward to recipes from home, many my mother made and I didn't get her write them down for me. This was not the best example of Kentucky cooking I have read. Many of these recipes are totally foreign to me and others are not made the way I have eaten meals all over the state. I would not recommend this cookbook
