The Crisis of Western Education (Worlds of Christopher Dawson), by Christopher Dawson

The Crisis of Western Education, originally published in 1961, served as a capstone of Christopher Dawson's thought on the Western educational system. Long out of print, the book has now been updated with a new introduction by Glenn W. Olsen and is included in the ongoing Works of Christopher Dawson series. In all of his writings, Dawson masterfully brings various disciplinary perspectives and historical sources into a complex unity of expression and applies them to concrete conditions of modern society.

Dawson argued that Western culture had become increasingly defined by a set of economic and political preoccupations ultimately hostile to its larger spiritual end. Inevitably, its educational systems also became increasingly technological and pragmatic, undermining the long standing emphasis on liberal learning and spiritual reflection which were hallmarks of the Christian humanism that created it.

In this important work on the Western educational system, Dawson traces the history of these developments and argues that Western civilization can only be saved by redirecting its entire educational system from its increasing vocationalism and specialization. He insists that the Christian college must be the cornerstone of such an educational reform. However, he argued that this redirection would require a much more organic and comprehensive study of the living Christian tradition than had been attempted in the past.

Dawson had reservations about educational initiatives that had been developed in response to this crisis of education. Among them, he expressed doubts about newly emerging great books programs fearing that they would reduce the great tradition of a living culture to a set of central texts or great ideas. In contrast, he insisted that a Christian education had to be concerned with "how spiritual forces are transmitted and how they change culture, often in unexpected ways." This would require an understanding of the living and vital character of culture. As Dawson saw it, "culture is essentially a network of relations, and it is only by studying a number of personalities that you can trace this network." Dawson offers a diagnosis of modern education and proposes the retrieval of an organic and living culture which alone has the power to renew Western culture.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"There are a handful of books that I wish I could get colleagues in the field of education to read, and this is one of them. The reissuing of Dawson's accessible The Crisis of Western Education (originally published 1961) is still relevant and, sadly, still being ignored. Dawson's insights are masterfully presented by his unusual use of the tools of sociology, cultural history, and religious studies. . . . Most impressively, throughout the work Dawson, better than most, defines and chronicles the process of secularization in the West and its influence, especially within education. . . . This helpful and insightful book is a unique blend of cultural history, philosophy, and deeply informed Christian thinking about the flow of Western history and what has happened to education within that heritage."―Robert M. Breaking the Magic Spell: Radical Theories of Folk and Fairy Tales, by Jack Zipes

This revised, expanded, and updated edition of the 1979 landmark Breaking the Magic Spell examines the enduring power of fairy tales and the ways they invade our subjective world. In seven provocative essays, Zipes discusses the importance of investigating oral folk tales in their socio-political context and traces their evolution into literary fairy tales, a metamorphosis that often diminished the ideology of the original narrative. Zipes also looks at how folk tales influence our popular beliefs and the ways they have been exploited by a corporate media network intent on regulating the mystical elements of the stories. He examines a range of authors, including the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson, Ernst Bloch, Tolkien, Bettelheim, and J.K. Rowling to demonstrate the continuing symbiotic relationship between folklore and literature.

Great starting point for "radical" interpretations of folk and fairy tales
By Michael A. Duvernois
The book was originally published in 1979, with this new edition coming along in 2002. The feminist interpretations of fairy tales have gained a lot of attention since the book appeared (see most any Angela Carter, my personal choice is The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman) and it would be hard to consider that radical today. Still, the discussion of latent fascism ("Might makes right") and Utopian idealism are excellent and thought provoking. The book was originally written at least in part a response to the popularity (late 1960s and early 1970s) of Tolkien and Narnia. The update adds in Harry Potter and reconnects us to popularity of the folk tale in mass market literature.

"In Pittsburgh, PA, a burglar lost his shoe as he fled from the home of Mrs. M., age 43. Patrolmen arrested R.T., age 20, who was sitting shoeless in a nearby bar. Authorities said a shoe matching the one found in the M. home was discovered behind the bar." - Winnipeg Free Press, April 14, 1972

excellent resource
By Becca
I wish I could find more books like this, with critical commentary on the development of fairy tales.

Unfortunately, the author is a professor of German, and uses a lot of German terms without necessarily translating them, which got confusing for this non-German speaking reader.

Great Overview of Nonstandard Folktale Theories
By Julia Starkey
I really love Jack Zipes, and this is one of his helpful books for folklorists, and amateurs who enjoy reading fairy tales. It presents a variety of 'radical' theories about the meaning and construction of fairy tales. Many of the theories are no longer quite so radical. The book also gives you a good overview of feminist theories about the tales, some of which will surprise. Among other things, that fairy tales are not always about the subjugation of silly blond princesses. I reccomend this book as an intro to folk and fairy tale theory.

Act of Contrition, by Janice Holt Giles

Act of Contrition focuses on the intimate relationship between Regina, a widow, and Michael, a young doctor whose wife left him for another man. Having found happiness in one another, they desire nothing more than to be together. Yet in the eyes of the Catholic Church, Michael is not free to divorce his wife and marry Regina. In an emotional climax Regina must decide if she loves Michael enough to give him up or if she'll force him to choose between her and God.

By modern standards, Giles's love scenes are tasteful, and the general atmosphere of ecumenism within today's Catholic Church renders moot many of the tensions in the novel. Yet in 1957 Giles's agent and publisher feared the work would cause "irreparable harm" to her reputation. As late as 1972 Giles was revising in the hopes of seeing the novel published. Finally her wish is fulfilled.

Janice Holt Giles (1905-1979), author of nineteen books, lived and wrote near Knifley, Kentucky, for thirty-four years. Her biography is Janice Holt Giles: A Writer's Life.

"A truly timeless tale that transcends generations as well as outlasting the obstacles they placed."―Louisville Courier-Journal

From the Inside Flap
Janice Holt Giles, nationally acclaimed author of twenty-four books, considered Act of Contrition one of the best novels she had ever written. Yet Giles’s publisher twice rejected the manuscript, fearing its challenge to the rules of church and society to be too daring and controversial. Giles’s daughter kept the manuscript, and finally this “lost novel” is available.

The story focuses on the intimate relationship between Regina Browning, a librarian newly moved to Kentucky, and Michael Panelli, a Catholic doctor whose wife left him for another man. Regina, quiet and artistic, lives alone since the death of her husband. Michael comes from a large, affectionate, and deeply religious family, yet he harbors a secret guilt.

Though they are afraid to love again, Regina and Michael can’t fight the sparks that fly between them from the beginning. Their love, however, does not go unchallenged. As Regina finds herself falling for the good doctor and begins to let down her guard, she must deal with his alternating bursts of passion and mysterious brooding.

In the eyes of the Catholic Church, Michael is not free to divorce his wife and marry Regina. The couple’s devotion to each other could lead to scandal and exclusion, even, for Michael, excommunication. Regina finds herself battling for Michael’s heart against his own painful confusion, his family, and even the local Catholic Church to prove what she herself knows—that the love they share is holy and true. She must decide if she loves Michael enough to let him go or if she will force him to chose between his God and her.

By modern standards the novel’s love scenes are tasteful, and the general atmosphere of ecumenism within today’s Catholic Church softens many of its tensions. But the tale of the love of two people from different worlds—social, ethnic, and religious—is timeless.

"Act of Contrition is surely in the grand tradition of love stories about two people, who, despite monumental obstacles, are consumed by their love for each other and will test even the gates of hell to be together.”—from the foreword by Wade Hall

Beautiful Love Story
By Amazon Customer
Years after her death, a book by JHG has been published that is a beautiful love story between two people at a time when divorce was against religious teachings. Yet these characters demonstrate that life is good even though all others seem to be against what would be the only way for them to lead the life they seem destined to live.
I could not put the book down until I had finished. It was too long in coming!

Freedom and the Human Person (Studies in Philosophy and the History of Philosophy), by Richard Velkley

In the Western tradition, freedom and the human person have been at the center of philosophical, theological, moral, and political debates since the origins of this tradition. Although contemporary discourse betrays the multiplicity of these roots, the necessary historical perspective for evaluating them is almost always lacking, even in scholarly studies. The terms "freedom" and "person" carry such overwhelming force in the modern world that the critical distance required for grasping what is at stake in using them is extremely hard to gain.

The present collection seeks to contribute toward finding that distance by making the tradition of thought more a living reality and not an object of arid analyses. Unlike most collections the present one transcends disciplinary boundaries, as it acknowledges the interconnectedness of philosophical, theological, and political arguments on these themes.

The contributors are prominent authorities in particular historical periods or in figures in Western thought, and they treat approaches to freedom and the human person in ancient Greek, biblical, medieval and modern sources, although the major emphasis is on the thought of leading philosophers (Plato, Boethius, Aquinas, Ockham, Machiavelli, Locke, Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, Husserl, et al.). Their essays bring forward profound contrasts in how freedom and personhood have been grounded and characterized, notably the contrasts between groundings in natural reason and in supernatural revelation, between premodern teleological thinking and modern thinking on self-sovereignty without teleology, and within modern thought between positions favoring individual autonomy and others securing freedom and its exercise in communal or traditional life. Several of the papers shed light on the relations of freedom and personhood to the human powers of speech, thought, and judgment.

The contributors to the volume are Seth Benardete, Michael Gillespie, Leon Kass, Robert B. Pippin, Robert Rethy, John M. Rist, Brian J. Shanley, O. P., Susan Meld Shell, Robert Sokolowski, Eleonore Stump, Nathan Tarcov, and Michael P. Zuckert (with Jesse Covington and James Thompson).

Richard Velkley, former professor of philosophy at the Catholic University of America, is Celia Scott Weatherhead Professor of Philosophy at Tulane University. He is author of Freedom and the End of Reason: On the Moral Foundation of Kant's Critical Philosophy and Being after Rousseau: Philosophy and Culture in Question.

In his new book, William Lynwood Montell has assembled an entertaining and diverse array of tales from across the commonwealth that will keep you checking under the bed every night.

The first-person accounts in this collection showcase folklore that Montell has drawn from archives, family stories, and oral traditions throughout Kentucky. The stories include that of the ghost bride of Laurel County, who appears each year on the anniversary of her wedding day; the tale of the murdered worker who haunts the Simpson County home of his killer and former employer; and the account of the lost mandolin that plays itself in a house in Graves County. These and many other chilling stories haunt the pages of Tales of Kentucky Ghosts.

In the tradition of Montell's previous Kentucky ghost books (Ghosts across Kentucky and Haunted Houses and Family Ghosts of Kentucky), Tales of Kentucky Ghosts brings together a variety of terrifying narratives that not only entertain and frighten but also serve as a unique record of Kentucky's rich heritage of storytelling.

Review
"Montell vividly re-creates the context of storytelling in Kentucky in times past. This evocation of the rich folk history of the region is the special strength and magic his work offers to readers: the sense that their own tales, ways, and beliefs are part of a valuable legacy that deserves respect and honor. This is a matter about which Montell is passionate, and his passion shines through."―Margaret Read MacDonald, author of Ten Traditional Tellers

"Lynwood Montell is truly an icon in the field of Kentucky folklore. He continues to offer us Kentucky ghost tales that range from entertaining to spine chilling, whether it is the tale of a ghost chewing Moore's Red Leaf Tobacco in Patti's Restaurant or the shoes that miraculously stayed dry during a flood or any of the other stories in the collection. They are a wonderful form of oral history and a valuable addition to our Kentucky heritage."―James McCormick and Macy A. Wyatt, authors of Ghosts of the Bluegrass

"Tales of Kentucky Ghosts offers a wide range from possible and frightening to folkloric and improbable tales which both enriches the accessible collection of ghostly tales and provides compelling reading. Lynwood Montell successfully reports on family stories, bizarre creatures, urban legends, classic country ghost tales, strange glowing lights, talking cats and so much more."―Thomas Freese, author of Ghosts, Spirits, and Angels: True Tales from Kentucky and Beyond

"Is sure to both entertain and chill its readers while also allowing them to consider their own supernatural heritage."―Manchester Enterprise

"Montell has combined more than 270 stories from across the Commonwealth."―Kentucky Monthly

"Entertaining, frightening and yet though evoking Montell's collection of stories is a wonderful offering of the rich heritage Kentucky has handed down to its citizens."―Chevy Chaser Southsider

"[Montell] combed through university archives and interviewed countless individuals to provide a look at regional legend and lore."―Hancock News

"This is a great collection of ghost stories that reflect Kentucky's rich history and legends."―Tuscon Citizen

"Those who first and foremost seek a sense of how ghost stories are told may well favor Tales of Kentucky Ghosts above all his other books."―Appalachian Journal

"[T]his is a very good book . . . . the stories have the air of genuinely individual experiences . . . . [Y]ou will be well entertained if you invest in this excellent selection of ghost stories and share them with your friends."―Gillian Bennett, The Folklore Society, UK, Folklore

By ElganRui
This book is not as good as his previous books but it's still worth the price. There are many great ghost stories which will give you the chills and make you dread walking through your house but I felt there were a few too many ridiculous and obviously unbelievable stories added as fillers. As any collector of ghost lore knows, a good ghost story should be at least somewhat believable.
This book seemed to me to be a sign that the author was scraping the bottom of the barrel for material. But all said and done, it is still a good read.

The Art of Preaching: Five Medieval Texts and Translations, by Siegfried Wenzel

In the later Middle Ages, preachers learned how to structure a sermon from technical treatises called artes praedicandi. These treatises taught and illustrated how to select a biblical text for the sermon of a given day and then develop it by means of divisions and various kinds of expansion. Their exposition is highly technical and sometimes can be
obscure. About 240 such works are known to exist in Latin, but only a few of them have been edited and even fewer translated into modern English.

Based on his wide-ranging knowledge of late-medieval Latin sermons from England as well as his editorial experience with medieval Latin texts, Siegfried Wenzel offers critical editions of five instruction manuals on the "art of preaching" dating from 1230 to the fifteenth century. Four of the texts are edited and translated for the first time; the fifth is re-edited from all extant manuscripts. Each of the five sermons is accompanied by a facing-page translation into English. The book aims to stimulate interest and new research in a field that still awaits closer analysis of the relationships among existing treatises and of
their historical development.

Siegfried Wenzel, a longtime professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania
and at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is author or editor of numerous books and articles, most recently Preaching in the Age of Chaucer (CUA Press). Wenzel is recipient of the Medieval Academy of America's prestigious Charles Homer Haskins Medal for his contributions to medieval literature and religion.

The Logos Reader: Rational Radicalism and the Future of PoliticsFrom Brand: The University Press of Kentucky

The online publication Logos: A Journal of Modern Society and Culture was launched in response to the atmosphere of triumphant conservatism and militarism that pervades American political culture in the aftermath of 9/11. Aiming to revitalize the moribund political left, several world-renowned intellectual figures congregated to form the journal's core group of editors and writers. The mission of Logos is to promote "rational radicalism," grounded in critical social theory and fully engaged with the most vital issues of our time. The Logos Reader: Rational Radicalism and the Future of Politics offers the best political writing published by the journal during its first three years. Compiled by founding editors Stephen Eric Bronner and Michael J. Thompson, these pieces critically examine globalization, the Iraq War, and the plight of the Middle East, while also illuminating the domestic concerns that dominate American discourse. Delivered in a direct, accessible manner, the analyses presented in The Logos Reader reflect the journal's distinctly public purpose. The essays reveal both the practical and theoretical connections between distant military pursuits and domestic struggles for democracy and equality. The left's leading intellectuals shed light on the most recent developments in the global war on terrorism while sharply criticizing right-wing justifications for restricted civil liberties, human rights violations, and rampant expansion of armaments. Similar attention is given to central domestic issues, such as the conservative right's assault on the welfare state and the crusade of religious fundamentalists against civil rights protections for all citizens. Negotiating the vast terrain of current social problems, the contributors are united in their intent to question and ultimately constrain the excessive power wielded by dominant cultural, political, and economic institutions. This collection stakes out firm ideological ground and challenges authoritarian forces, clarifying the notion of rational radicalism as a liberating counterpoint to limiting worldviews and systems of oppression.

"A distinctive, timely, and important collection that manifests a 'left' reconnecting with its historicist roots to reconstitute itself politically in a time of crisis. Prominent authors, public relevance of topics, and lucid writing should make the work attractive to a wide range of liberal and left-leaning readers. It will also be appreciated by others who simply want to know more about today's left and alternative policy regimes."―Robert J. Antonio, author of Marx and Modernity

"The Logos Reader provides progressives with cause for hope in a dark time. It proves that academically grounded writing can be lucid and political critique can be coherent and affirmative. Interesting but not very scholarly
By Jill Malter
The first sentence of this book is "Lying has always been part of politics." And we go from there to see how our involvement in a war in Iraq was in no small part caused by a gross exaggeration of the immediate military threat posed by Iraq.

Yes, that first sentence implies that this book ought to stand or fall on its willingness to separate lies from truth. However, there are a couple of items in this book that show a serious unwillingness to do just that. We see an article by Marwan Bishara who says that all Israeli settlements are illegal. That's a lie. And in the following article, by Lawrence Davidson, we are treated another dishonest, illogical and afactual gem: Davidson says that "those who are ready to take risks for peace" are a majority on the Arab side, while "they are still a minority on the Israeli side."

I ought to subtract four stars from my rating of this book for that, but I won't. I think there are some interesting articles in it. But I advise readers not to trust much of what is they read in this book, given these whoppers.

We see articles about Leo Strauss. And about Dinesh D'Souza. D'Souza is criticized by Christine Kelly about his polemical works, but she appears to fail to appreciate the fact that many of the works D'Souza opposes are just as polemical. She complains about the slurs against people such as "Howard Zinn, Barbara Ehrenreich, Noam Chomsky, and Cornel West" without examining the rather serious misrepresentations of reality they have occasionally treated us to. We see those who praise former President Ronald Reagan dismissed contemptuously. I was never a fan of Reagan, and I tend to dislike exaggerated displays of praise even for those people I am fondest of, so I did not mind that very much. But it did seem awfully hypocritical for such a book to later include an article which displayed enormous praise for the wicked Ed Said.

There are a few articles which deal with the Arab war against Israel. One is by Henry Pachter. While I disagree with much of it, I have to admit that it includes more than a few traces of honesty. It was written in 1975. I would be surprised to see such an article appear today: anti-Zionists have tended to totally dispense with so much truth about this conflict in the intervening years. That essay is followed by a truly foolish article about the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

I won't recommend this book, but I do think it has some interesting essays. I wish it had adhered to some of the standards of honesty one might have hoped for given that first sentence.

The Letters of Thomas Merton and Victor and Carolyn Hammer: Ad Majorem Dei GloriamFrom University Press of Kentucky

Poet, social justice advocate, and theologian Thomas Merton (1915–1968) is arguably the most influential American Catholic author of the twentieth century. In his short lifetime, he penned over seventy books and maintained a brisk correspondence with colleagues around the globe. However, many Merton scholars and fans remain unaware of the significant body of letters that were exchanged between the Trappist monk and Victor and Carolyn Hammer.

Unable to leave his home at the Abbey of Gethsemani except on special occasions, Merton developed a unique friendship with this couple from nearby Lexington, Kentucky. Carolyn, who supplied Merton with many of the books he required for his writing and teaching, was a founder of the King Library Press at the University of Kentucky. Victor was an accomplished painter, sculptor, printer, and architect. The friendship and collaborations between Merton and the Hammers reveal their shared interest in the convergence of art, literature, and spirituality.

In this volume, editors F. Douglas Scutchfield and Paul Evans Holbrook Jr. have collected the trio's complete correspondence for the first time. Their letters, arranged chronologically, vividly demonstrate a blossoming intellectual camaraderie and provide a unique opportunity to understand Merton's evolving philosophies. At times humorous, often profound, the letters in this volume shed light on a rare friendship and offer new insights into the creative intellect of Thomas Merton.

Soldier in the Sinai: A General's Account of the Yom Kippur War (Foreign Military Studies), by Emanuel Sakal

In surprise attacks on Israel in October 1973, Egyptian and Syrian forces crossed ceasefire lines to enter the Israeli-held Sinai Peninsula and Golan Heights, igniting what became known as the Yom Kippur War. In the north, Israel succeeded in blocking the Syrian advance, but in the south, it failed to achieve an operational decision in the defense campaign. In Soldier in the Sinai, mobile and armored warfare expert Major General Emanuel Sakal analyzes the operational and strategic decisions made by Israel's political and military leadership and assesses the causes of the defense's first-phase failure.

Prior to the conflict, the government approved the Israel Defense Forces' (IDF) strategy, dubbed "the regulars will hold." This plan assumed that the IDF regulars on the front lines, supported by the Israeli Air Force, would effectively counter the Arab attack even if deterrence failed. Employing operations research, simulation, and computerized war games, Sakal examines the virtual results of an alternative approach by the Israeli military and explains how ineffective air support, an inadequate tank strategy, and a delay in mobilizing its reserves crippled the country's air force.

An intriguing and detailed evaluation of Israel's flawed defense, Soldier in the Sinai offers a firsthand account of military strategy from a general who commanded a regular tank battalion that fought in the most desperate battles of the conflict. Based on extensive research, including interviews with the principal officers involved, this book provides a meticulous critique of the faulty assumptions and lack of planning that contributed to the disastrous early battles of the Yom Kippur War.

Review
"This is the book that every serious student of the Arab-Israeli Wars and the IDF has been waiting for. There is nothing like this book in print in English. As a battalion commander in the war, General Sakal has unique personal insight, but his analysis is nonetheless precise, balanced, and unflinching."―Major General David T. Zabecki, USA (Ret.)

""A fascinating study that makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the 1973 Yom Kippur/Ramadan War. Based on extensive interviews, the author has provided a detailed critique of the faulty assumptions and lack of planning that contributed to the disastrous early battles in the Sinai in October 1973."―Jonathan M. House, author of Combined Arms Warfare in the Twentieth Century"―

Beyond myths and propaganda surrounding 1973 war
By Pablo Calahorra Gonzalez
This is not a history of the Yom Kippur War like Herzog's or Rabinovitch's, it is not even an account of the war in first person like "In both sides of Suez". Though the writer was commanding a tank battalion at war's eve in Sinai, and offers some vignettes of how was the fighting in the first days of the war, the importance of this book is another. First of all gaves hard data about IDF situation and order of battle in Sinai in 1973; moreover brings light to the concept, deployment and implementation of the Israeli counterattack plan, "Dovecote". Besides offers a through examination of the Bar Lev Line, again Sakal goes to the genesis of the idea, the building of the fortifications and eventually how did they withstand the rigors of combat and the real influence they had in the outcome of the fighting. Sakal also portrays the chaos which permeated the Southern Command before the Egyptian attack, making some harsh -but very soundly based- judgments of the top IDF generals. To cap it all, IAF role in the first days of the fighting is thoroughly analyzed. Sakal's narrative is dense, but rather articulated, with the book being a veritable treasure trove of data about IDF. Whereas it will never be a best seller, it is a rather valuable addition to the library of any serious student of the Middle East Wars: enlightening, innovative and unbiased. It would have been perfect in case of covering the rest of the operations in Sinai with the same level of detail which offers for the first days of combat, but then perhaps the book would have morphed into an unpublicable leviathan or a Glantz-esque monster like the last books written by col David Glantz. Anyway, let's hope there will be more english translations of israeli books by this publisher.
