Killing Tradition: Inside Hunting and Animal Rights Controversies, by Simon J. Bronner

Across the country and around the world, people avidly engage in the cultural practice of hunting. Children are taken on rite-of-passage hunting trips, where relationships are cemented and legacies are passed on from one generation to another. Meals are prepared from hunted game, often consisting of regionally specific dishes that reflect a community's heritage and character. Deer antlers and bear skins are hung on living room walls, decorations and relics of a hunter's most impressive kills. Only 5 percent of Americans are hunters, but that group has a substantial presence in the cultural consciousness. Hunting has spurred controversy in recent years, inciting protest from animal rights activists and lobbying from anti-cruelty demonstrators who denounce the custom. But hunters have responded to such criticisms and the resulting legislative censures with a significant argument in their defense―the claim that their practices are inextricably connected to a cultural tradition. Further, they counter that they, as representatives of the rural lifestyle, pioneer heritage, and traditional American values, are the ones being victimized. Simon J. Bronner investigates this debate in Killing Tradition: Inside Hunting and Animal Rights Controversies. Through extensive research and fieldwork, Bronner takes on the many questions raised by this problematic subject: Does hunting promote violence toward humans as well as animals? Is it an outdated activity, unnecessary in modern times? Is the heritage of hunting worth preserving? Killing Tradition looks at three case studies that are at the heart of today's hunting debate. Bronner first examines the allegedly barbaric rituals that take place at deer camps every late November in rural America. He then analyzes the annual Labor Day pigeon shoot of Hegins, Pennsylvania, which brings animal rights protests to a fever pitch. Noting that these aren't simply American concerns (and that the animal rights movement in America is linked to British animal welfare protests), Bronner examines the rancor surrounding the passage of Great Britain's Hunting Act of 2004―the most comprehensive and divisive anti-hunting legislation ever enacted. The practice of hunting is sure to remain controversial, as it continues to be touted and defended by its supporters and condemned and opposed by its detractors. With Killing Tradition, Bronner reflects on the social, psychological, and anthropological issues of the debate, reevaluating notions of violence, cruelty, abuse, and tradition as they have been constructed and contested in the twenty-first century.

Brand new as described, great book!
By P. Hester
If you want the cold hard facts about or tradition of hunting, look no further. A fairly neutral book that allows you to make up your own mind, about the "sport" of killing.

Her image is iconic: Oprah Winfrey has built an empire on her ability to connect with and inspire her audience. No longer just a name, "Oprah" has become a brand representing the talk show host's unique style of self-actualizing individualism. The cultural and economic power wielded by Winfrey merits critical evaluation. The contributors to The Oprah Phenomenon examine the origins of her public image and its substantial influence on politics, entertainment, and popular opinion. Contributors address praise from her many supporters and weigh criticisms from her detractors. Winfrey's ability to create a feeling of intimacy with her audience has long been cited as one of the foundations of her popularity. She has repeatedly made national headlines by engaging and informing her audience with respect to her personal relationships to race, gender, feminism, and New Age culture. The Oprah Phenomenon explores these relationships in detail.

At the root of Winfrey's message to her vast audience is her assertion that anyone can be a success regardless of background or upbringing. The contributors scrutinize this message: What does this success entail? Is the motivation behind self-actualization, in fact, merely the hope of replicating Winfrey's purchasing power? Is it just a prescription to buy the products she recommends and heed the advice of people she admires, or is it a lifestyle change of meaningful spiritual benefit? The Oprah Phenomenon asks these and many other difficult questions to promote a greater understanding of Winfrey's influence on the American consciousness.

Terrific Collection
By writergirl
There are several books about Oprah on the market but for an intellecutally engaged reader this volume is among the very best. The Oprah Phenomenon is a terrific collection of well crafted essays covering a range of topics. The book includes essays on Oprah and race (including the appeal of Oprah to white women), Oprah and femininity (including Black femininity) and Oprah and literacy (including what her television work has done for America), to name a few. I teach courses sociology courses on topics including gender and pop culture and can easily see this book being used in such courses, as a vehicle to address a range of social issues. The book also would serve the general reader, interested in the Oprah Phenomenon.

Ethics and Theological Disclosures: The Thought of Robert Sokolowski, by Mansini&Hart

Ethics and Theological Disclosures honors distinguished philosopher and professor Robert Sokolowski for his work in phenomenology, the study of the way things present themselves to us in human experience. Robert Sokolowski pioneered the introduction of the phenomenological point of view in areas little explored by American phenomenologists. His work is original not only for its distinctive, lucid style but also for the unique light it casts on some of the most difficult and important of ethical and theological matters.

The essays included in this collection demonstrate the reception and fruitfulness of Sokolowski's analysis of moral action and of his idea of a "theology of disclosure." John Drummond treats Sokolowski's formalization of Aristotle on justice, ending with a consideration of its relation to friendship. Richard Cobb-Stevens and Guy Mansini deal expressly with friendship. Owen Sadlier locates the key philosophical elements of the theology of disclosure. Gerard Jacobitz explores how metaphors function in effecting the revelation of God. James G. Hart explores Sokolowski's theological reflections on the praying self and that self's God. John McCarthy examines the role of reason in displaying the God of creation. John Brough discusses Sokolowski's Eucharistic Presence and the presentational forms of the celebration of the Eucharist. Francis Slade pushes the ethical concerns of the volume into the political sphere and considers the issue of sovereignty. And Sokolowski himself addresses the revelation of the Trinity. The book includes a general introduction to Sokolowski's work and a complete bibliography of his writings.

When Winter Come: The Ascension of York (Kentucky Voices), by Frank X Walker

A sequel to the award-winning Buffalo Dance, Frank X Walker's When Winter Come: The Ascension of York is a dramatic reimagining of Lewis and Clark's legendary exploration of the American West. By focusing on the humanity and struggles of York, Clark's slave, When Winter Come challenges conventional views of the journey's heroes and exposes the deeds, both great and ghastly, of the men behind the myth. Grounded in the history of the famous trip, Walker's vibrant account allows York―little more than a forgotten footnote in traditional narratives―to embody the full range of human ability, knowledge, emotion, and experience. He is a skillful hunter who kills his prey with both grace and reverence, and he thinks deeply about the proper place of humans in the natural world. York knows the seasons "like a book," and he "can read moss, sunsets, the moon, and a mare's foaling time with a touch." The Native peoples understand and honor York's innate bond with the earth. Though his expertise is integral to the journey's success, York's masters do not reward him; they know only the way of the lash. The alternately heartbreaking and uplifting poems in When Winter Come are told from multiple perspectives and rendered in vivid detail. On the journey, York forges a spiritual connection and shares sensual delights with a Nez Perce woman, and he aches when he is forced to leave her and their unborn son. Walker's poems capture the profound feelings of love and loss on each side of this ill-fated meeting of souls. When the trek ends and York is sent back to his former home, his wife and stepmother air their joys and grievances. As the perspectives of Lewis, Clark, Sacagawea, and others in the party emerge, Walker also gives voice to York's knife, his hunting shirt, and the river waters that have borne the labors and travels of thousands before and after the Lewis and Clark expedition. Despite fleeting hints that escape is possible, slavery continues to bind York and quell the joyful noise in his spirit until his death. Walker's poems, however, give York his voice after centuries of silence. When Winter Come exalts the historical persona of a slave and lifts the soul of a man. York ascends out of his chains, out of oblivion, and into flight.

Review
"When Winter Come is an astonishing collection of poems that ushers Frank X Walker into the company of other memorable poets like Roethke, Hugo, Clifton, and Dove but he also recollects the powerful narrative voice of Michael Ondaatje's Coming Through Slaughter or Alice Walker's The Color Purple. Frank X Walker magically captures York, not the flat historical figure represented in Lewis & Clark's journals―Walker has tapped into the true voice of York and conjured him on the page. This is not just a book of poems―this is a book of spirits and shimmering apparitions."―Debra Magpie Earling, author of Perma Red"

"Beginning with Buffalo Dance and continuing with the groundbreaking When Winter Come, Frank X. Walker's lyrical and stunning resurrection of York is an unparalleled creative discourse. The poet, in stanzas probing and revelatory, opens the slave's life wide, not examining York as much as inhabiting him, laying bare the complications, frailties and triumphs that history dims and denies. There is much here that we do not know, and we are blessed that it is Walker who has taken on this chronicle of York's 'other life'―with the same unflinching passion, the same deft characterization and the same undeniable courage."―Patricia Smith, author of Teahouse of the Almighty, winner of the National Poetry Series"

"I heard Walker read these poems. Now there is the delight of reading them yourself with this book. They are honest, true, raw, brilliantly conceived. An important contribution to illuminating our past and making it alive."―Natalie Goldberg, author of Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within"

"The lyrical and moving poetry of Frank Walker has given York a voice and brought to life his world of slavery, adventure, love, nature, and African and Native American mythology."―James J. Holmberg, Curator of Special Collections, The Filson Historical Society"

"Frank X Walker has re-imagined the story of the Lewis and Clark expedition in a way no one else has. This powerful and insightful book is more than an admirable sequel to Buffalo Dance. It is a careful re-examination of historical records, re-imagined and conjured into a concert of voices whose aim is truth. One can read When Winter Come through from beginning to end like a good novel, and then go back and savor it one poem at time. Walker has given all of us who care about American literature a lasting gift."―Greg Pape, Montana Poet Laureate (2007-2009) and author of Sunflower Facing the Sun and Border Crossings"

"With characteristically fierce, driven energy, prize-winning poet Frank Walker seems to channel the powerful voice of York, a slave owned by William Clark, as well as the compelling voices of York's Nez Perce wife, York's brother, and Clark himself. Walker becomes a contemporary bard – thrilling us, moving us, filling us with discoveries as his remarkable poems follow the Lewis and Clark expedition from its underside. When Winter Come: The Ascension of York is Walker's finest achievement so far.―Molly Peacock, author of Cornucopia"

"This collection is a sequel to Walker's award-winning "Buffalo Dance," and like its predecessor is a masterful blending of history, folk narrative, myth and explorations into the mysterious nature of man and his relationship to his environment, his human pilgrimage, and even the Divine. The Lewis and Clark expedition becomes only one facet (less important at the end than at the beginning) of the journey each man and woman―and the natural worlds through which they traverse―must undergo in order to reach conclusions that lead to important ultimate truths of the heart." ―James Darrell, Bowling Green Daily News"

"Walker follows the acclaimed Buffalo Dance: The Journey of York with an even more engaging account of a woefully neglected historical figure whose indispensible work with Lewis and Clark's Expedition of Discovery wasn't compensated at all." ―Todd Mercer,Foreword Magazine"

"Affrilachian innovator and Lannan Fellow Frank X. Walker follows the acclaimed Boffalo Dance: The Journey of York with an even more engaging account of a woefully neglected historical figure whose indispensable work with Lewis and Clark's Expedition of Discovery wasn't compensated at all. When Winter Come: The Ascension of York again divines the thoughts of Captain William Clark's body servant, fleshing out the picture with the voices of York's Nez Perce and slave wives, Sacagewea, and a deeply flawed Captain Clark who breaks an implied promise of manumission." ―Foreword Magazine"

"By making the erased visible, and the silenced audible, When Winter Come leads us to reconsider not only the history of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, but also how the story of geography and exploration as racialised practices can be told." ―Innes M. Keighren,Scottish Geographical Journal"

"This is a beautiful collection of poetry and is highly recommended." ―Margaret Bashaar,www.mcreview.com"

"Although clearly a sequel, When Winter Come: The Ascension of York is quite a different kind of book. Obviously, it has the same subject, but it does more than extend the story of York's life. . . . Singly and together, [Buffalo Dance and When Winter Come] are a great success: they portray the complex character of York, they enrich our understanding of an important chapter in American history, and they demonstrate the evolving art of Frank X Walker." ―William Jolliff, Appalachian Journal"

"Few artists from the mountains have used the hills as successfully as a springboard to something as important as poetry as Frank X Walker." ―troybodyculture.blogspot.com"

"What Walker gives readers in this new book is not simply the voice of York . . . but a profusion of individualized voices, more then a dozen, which range fro York and William Clark to York's father, to his father's wife, Rose, York's unnamed slave wife, and his Nez Perce wife, but which include inanimate objects like York's hunting shirt, his hatchet, and his knife." ―"―John Lang, Emory and Henry College

"Frank X Walker is one of the most important voices in contemporary Appalachian poetry." ―John Lang, Emory and Henry College"

"In his newest work, Frank X Walker not only produces a fresh harvest of voices: he does so in eloquent, poetic form. Walker gives voice to other equally important historical voices, thereby sharpens the focus on the goodness and failings of all humans, and all the while widening the lens of truth known as history." ―Big Muddy"

"Frank X. Walker is one of the most important voice in contemporary Appalachian poetry, someone who, like the medicine man in this new volume's "Real Medicine," "sing[s] a healing song." ―Southern Quarterly"

"Walter's poetry is intelligent, relatable, emotional, and engaging all at the same time. He takes regional stereotypes and shatters them, showing readers through literary devices that the Appalachian region has much more to offer than what stereotypes lead those outside the region to believe. ― The Sentinel-Echo"―Rob McDaniel, The Sentinel-Echo

Lorca's Poet in New York: The Fall into Consciousness (Studies In Romance Languages), by Betty Jean Craige

Written in 1929–1930, when Federico García Lorca was visiting Columbia University, Poet in New York stands as one of the great Waste Land poems of the 20th century. It expresses, as Betty Jean Craige writes in this volume,"a sudden radical estrangement of the poet from his universe"―an an estrangement graphically delineated in the dissonant, violent imagery which the poet derives from the technological world of New York.

Craige here describes―through close analysis of the structure, style, and themes of individual works in Poet in New York―the chaos into which this world plunges the poet, and the process whereby he is able, gradually, to recover his identity with the regenerative forces of nature. Her study demonstrates that, though seemingly unique in form and motifs, Poet in New York is integral with Lorca's overall poetic achievement.

The History of Jemmy and Jenny Jessamy (Eighteenth-Century Novels by Women), by Eliza Haywood

The History of Jemmy and Jenny Jessamy, originally published as three volumes in 1753, is the last work by the prolific English novelist Eliza Haywood. Out of print since the early nineteenth century and never available in an edited and fully-annotated modern edition such as this, Haywood's novel is an important early example of the sentimental novel of domestic manners. In its depiction of marriage and courtship among the leisure class of the mid-eighteenth century, Haywood's novel is remarkable for its unsentimental realism.

Review
"A welcome addition to 18th-century surveys as well as courses on the development of the British novel."―Eighteenth-Century Intelligencer

"Provides a short but helpful introduction to Haywood's overall work and to the current volume along with editorial notes and selected bibliography. . . . Recommended."―Choice

Wonderfully rational heroine
By Patto
I loved this book, but not immediately. As the editor points out, the pace is "leisurely." The main storyline unfolds slowly, with frequent pauses for subsidiary tales of distressed or wayward young women and troubled marriages.

But at some point I realized I was fully immersed in the social whirl of upper-class eighteenth-century England, with its compulsive visiting, infinite diversions, gossip fests, raillery and rivalries. I could no more leave the scene than could the characters!

Jenny and Jemmy are distant cousins destined by their fathers to marry. Now orphaned, grown up and rich, they are devoted to each other, but with a warm affection rather than an "amorous flame." Jenny suggests they take time off to observe the world and learn from the mistakes of others before marrying. Agreeable Jemmy agrees.

This hiatus opens them up to the machinations of a rival who seeks to alienate the cousins - and win Jenny's lovely person and fortune for himself.

Throughout this trying period, Jenny is a model of rational behavior - never jumps to conclusions or flies into passions. Watching her mind work is a pleasure, as she reflects on human nature and questions appearances. Meanwhile Jemmy, though no saint, makes an equally appealing hero with his honesty, intelligence and true heart.

Eliza Haywood fascinates me, and this was her last novel (1753). So I was eager to read the introduction after I finished the book. I found it well written and insightful.

Haywood was every bit as famous as Fielding, Richardson and Defoe in her day. She started out writing sensational, amatory novels, but as literary tastes changed and fiction became increasingly moralistic, so did Haywood. The discreet, reflective Jenny Jessamy is a complete turnaround from Haywood's impassioned heroines of the 1720's.

I'm very grateful to The University Press of Kentucky for offering such well-edited and annotated editions of hard-to-find British novels by early women writers.

Funeral Orations

The Christian funeral oration is one of the most elaborate of Christian literary forms. It represents an attempt to adapt to Christian use a pagan Greek form with many hundreds of years behind it. . . . The Christian masterpieces presented in this volume reflect a long, rich, and varied pagan literary tradition in East and West, and at the same time exhibit modifications and new elements which give them their specific Christian character.

(From the Introduction by Martin R. P. McGuire)

The volume presents the most generally admired ancient Christian funeral orations―four from the Greek (those of St. Gregory Nazianzen), four from the Latin (those of St. Ambrose of Milan). From the Bishop of Nazianzen, we have words spoken in honor of three kinsmen, his father, a brother, and a sister, and of the great St. Basil, Bishop of Caesarea. Two of the orations from the lips of St. Ambrose are likewise for a kinsman, his brother Satyrus, while the other two are for wearers of the purple, the youthful Valentinian II and the emporor Theodosius.

Cardinal Patrick O'Boyle (1896-1987) is largely remembered as the controversial leader of the Archdiocese of Washington during its first, formative quarter century. Combining considerable foresight about the Church's social concerns with a stubborn resistance to innovation, he countered opposition from those who reviled his progressive stand, especially his steadfast demand for racial equality and support of organized labor. At the same time he earned the opprobrium of those who resisted his firm support of the magisterium, in particular his controversial defense of the pope's ban on artificial birth control and his rejection of liturgical experimentation in the wake of the Second Vatican Council.

Often overlooked is the fact that O'Boyle's Washington years followed a quarter-century participation in the modernization of the American Church's charity apparatus and the organization of its international relief effort. Such assignments placed him at the epicenter of the debate over the proper roles of church and state in providing social services. A product of the Catholic ghettoization of the early twentieth century, he was expected to lead his Church into fruitful partnerships with government and other organizations in support of society's most needy.

This engaging biography seeks to explain O'Boyle's apparent contradictions by placing special emphasis on his formative years as the only child in an immigrant, staunchly pro-labor family in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and his training as a seminarian and curate in the rigidly traditional Church of his adopted New York. These influences, combined with his subsequent work with the poor and orphaned, instilled in him a progressive economic and social outlook as well as a lifetime sympathy for society's neglected. At the same time they strengthened an unquestioned obedience and loyalty to those in authority that figured so prominently in his later Washington years, where he came to embody the paradox of simple faith and complex humanity.

[H]istorians will be grateful to MacGregor for providing us with this biography."―James Garneau, American Catholic Studies

Cardinal O'Boyle: A man devoted to the poor and his church
By Henry Schwalbenberg
If you are interested in biographies of leading American Catholic Church leaders, then this is an exciting story. It is a wonderful history of the roots of the close ties that were forged between the American labor movement and the Catholic Church in the early part of the 20th century, a fascinating story of the life of someone who came from the mining tradition of eastern Pennsylvania and entered the seminary of the New York Archdiocese and then went on to become a leading figure in the American Catholic Church. Cardinal O'Boyle had a career that dealt with the founding of Catholic Charities in New York as well as the modernization of social services in the United States. He also went on to found what would become today's Catholc Relief Services. He participated in the Second Vatican Council and he lived through some very difficult decisions with respect to Humanae Vitae. It is the story of a man who was deeply committed to the poor and to his church as well as to his family roots in eastern Pennsylvania. Everyone from Scranton will be cheering for their hometown son.

Reflections on Life, Death, and the Constitution, by George Anastaplo

The role of law in government has been increasingly scrutinized as courts struggle with controversial topics such as assisted suicide, euthanasia, abortion, capital punishment, and torture. Reflections on Life, Death, and the Constitution explores such issues by using classical standards of morality as a starting point for understanding them. Drawing on works of literature and philosophy, and on U.S. Supreme Court decisions, George Anastaplo examines the intimate relationship between human nature and constitutional law.

Lincoln Legends: Myths, Hoaxes, and Confabulations Associated with Our Greatest President, by Edward Steers Jr.

In the more than 140 years since his death, Abraham Lincoln has become America's most revered president. The mythmaking about this self-made man began early, some of it starting during his campaign for the presidency in 1860. As an American icon, Lincoln has been the subject of speculation and inquiry as authors and researchers have examined every aspect― personal and professional ―of the president's life. In Lincoln Legends, noted historian and Lincoln expert Edward Steers Jr. carefully scrutinizes some of the most notorious tall tales and distorted ideas about America's sixteenth president. These inaccuracies and speculations about Lincoln's personal and professional life abound. Did he write his greatest speech on the back of an envelope on the way to Gettysburg? Did Lincoln appear before a congressional committee to defend his wife against charges of treason? Was he an illegitimate child? Did Lincoln have romantic encounters with women other than his wife? Did he have love affairs with men? What really happened in the weeks leading up to April 14, 1865, and in the aftermath of Lincoln's tragic assassination? Lincoln Legends evaluates the evidence on all sides of the many heated debates about the Great Emancipator. Not only does Steers weigh the merits of all relevant arguments and interpretations, but he also traces the often fascinating evolution of flawed theories about Lincoln and uncovers the motivations of the individuals―occasionally sincere but more often cynical, self-serving, and nefarious―who are responsible for their dispersal. Based on extensive primary research, the conclusions in Lincoln Legends will settle many of the enduring questions and persistent myths about Lincoln's life once and for all. Steers leaves us with a clearer image of Abraham Lincoln as a man, as an exceptionally effective president, and as a deserving recipient of the nation's admiration.

From Publishers Weekly
Noted Lincoln scholar Steers (Blood on the Moon: The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln) succinctly and eloquently debunks 14 popular myths about the Great Emancipator's life and death. Is the so-called Birthplace Cabin in Kentucky the real thing? Probably not, save for a few random boards that might linger from the original structure. Was Lincoln's father of record, Thomas Lincoln, actually his father, or was Lincoln the bastard son of Nancy Hanks and another man? According to Steers, Thomas Lincoln sowed the seed in his lawfully wedded wife. Did Lincoln and Ann Rutledge have a love affair? No, says Steers. He also takes on such questions as whether Mary Lincoln was a Confederate spy (nope), whether the famous lost draft of the Gettysburg Address is real or a forgery (forgery) and whether the infamous Dr. Samuel Mudd was guilty of duplicity in the Lincoln assassination (guilty as charged). Additionally, Steers dismembers the myth that Lincoln was gay. Throughout, the author backs up his pronouncements with solid documentation: the surest tool for clearing the smoke of fantastic folklore that envelops the 16th president. Photos. (Oct.)

From Booklist
Much that has been written about Lincoln, claims Steers, is mythmaking. It began early, at the Republican State Convention in May 1860. For 20 years, Steers has worked to correct the legend and tell the truth about the conspiracy that ended Lincoln's life and the complicity of the doctor who treated the president's murderer after the assassination. The myths include Lincoln's alleged romance with Ann Rutledge, rumors about his illegitimacy, his born-again Christian conversion and baptism, and his appearance before a congressional committee to defend his controversial wife. Chapters deal with such subjects as his birthplace cabin; his father; his speeches and writings; the myth that he was gay; missing pages from John Wilkes Booth's diary; and the identity of Peanut John Burroughs, the man who held Booth's horse. Steers, author of Blood on the Moon, has written a prodigiously researched history of a provocative subject. Cohen, George

Review
"Ed Steers' delightful romp through the myths, whacking them down one-by-one, is funny and instructive all at the same moment. A great resource
By Anyechka
This was such an engrossing and captivating book that I read it in only a couple of days. Of all of the many, many, many books already published about President Lincoln, this one is a most worthy addition to the canon. For many people who have grown up treasuring or swearing by urban legends or outright historical falsehoods (such as Betsy Ross making the first American flag or President Washington chopping down a cherry tree), it can be hard to be confronted with the facts demolishing the legends, but intellectual honesty and historical truth should matter more than preserving a myth just because it makes one feel good or because it's been repeated so often that it's taken on the stature of truth.

I've read a lot about President Lincoln since I was a child, but some of the legends in this book were new to even me, such as the stories about his supposed out of wedlock birth, his alleged late-night baptism in a freezing river, and "Peanut John," the boy who held Booth's horse while he was inside of Ford's Theatre on that fateful night. Other topics covered include Dr. Samuel Mudd (was he or wasn't he an innocent doctor caught in the wrong place at the wrong time?), the true nature of the relationship between the young Abe and Ann Rutledge (I was kind of disappointed to learn that they may not have had a romance, though there is still no conclusive evidence in either direction), the modern-day myth about President Lincoln being gay, the "lost" draft of the Gettysburg Address, and Andrew Potter, the man who never was. Some of these legends may be more interesting to Lincoln scholars than to the general public, but they're all interesting. Some of them even made me laugh, like the one about his supposed true paternity and the totally implausible scenario for his alleged secret late-night baptism in the freezing December weather. There's something in here for everyone who has more than a passing interest in our greatest president.

Lincoln legends skewered
By Anson Cassel Mills
Most of Lincoln Legends is directed at buffs attracted by such arcane topics as the provenance of the Lincoln "birthplace" cabin, the final resting place (or more likely, places) of Ann Rutledge, whether Lincoln could have been baptized by immersion in the Sangamon River, and assorted odd notions about the assassination. A few chapters are of greater significance, among them the one spiking the myth of a "gay Lincoln" and the thorough examination of the "deceptive doctor," Samuel Alexander Mudd.

Steers writes well enough, but the book might have been improved by a more vigorous application of the editorial pen. Steers' method is usually to begin by laying out the mythological tale at perhaps too great a length and then to demolish the myth at the end of the chapter. This course often leads to wordy repetition. Books about myths and hoaxes are often fun to read; and this one is no exception, although it would have been better if it had been say, fifty pages shorter.

Great resource for Lincoln legends
By Danielle
Abraham Lincoln-a man who a lot of people agree that he was one of America's best presidents. With that adoration comes a lot of rumors, half-truths, and lies. Edward Steers Jr., who authored of "Blood on the Moon" a book about Lincoln's assassination (a book that I read and enjoyed), sets out to debunk some of the persisting Lincoln rumors.

I found the book to be quite interesting, especially since I'm always looking to read new material on Lincoln. I found the chapters dealing directly with Lincoln to be the most interesting. The ones that dealt with myths after Lincoln was assassinated were not as interesting to me. My favorite chapters were the ones about Abraham and Ann Rutledge (a story still not confirmed but I personally believe it's true), the Gettysburg chapters, and the chapter debunking some quotes that people attribute to Lincoln.

Being a Lincoln fan, I enjoyed this book a lot and I would recommend to anyone who has an interest in America's 16th President.
