Blueprints for Battle: Planning for War in Central Europe, 1948-1968 (Foreign Military Studies)From University Press of Kentucky

While scholarship abounds on the diplomatic and security aspects of the Cold War, very little attention has been paid to military planning at the operational level. In Blueprints for Battle, experts from Russia, the United States, and Europe address this dearth by closely examining the military planning of NATO and Warsaw Pact member nations from the end of World War II to the beginning of détente. Informed by material from recently opened archives, this collection investigates the perceptions and actions of the rival coalitions, exploring the challenges presented by nuclear technology, examining how military commanders' perceptions changed from the 1950s to the 1960s, and discussing logistical coordination among allied states. The result is a detailed study that offers much-needed new perspectives on the military aspects of the early Cold War.

Review
"The Cold War has been indifferently plumbed by scholars, especially regarding the Eastern bloc. This book, with its wealth of new and fascinating information on the subject, is especially welcome."―Spencer C. Tucker, retired holder of the John Biggs Chair of Military History at the Virginia Military Institute and editor of the Encyclopedia of the Cold War: A Political, Social, and Military History

"Contains a host of fascinating observations about a period for which the historical records are only just emerging. Although many books have analyzed the diplomatic and national security aspects of the early Cold War, few have gone down to the next level to examine how national strategies translated into specific military plans and actions."―Jonathan M. House, author of A Military History of the Cold War, 1944-1962

"Essential reading for any serving officer and should be required reading for senior defense officials. Blueprints, if read, would go a long way toward correcting the apparent memory loss of the purpose of armies and illusions of whether or not the Cold War was complicated or complex."―Army Magazine

""Readers of these conference offerings are given a sweeping vista of the war plans developed by the two alliances fort the arena of Central Europe during the first two decades of the Cold War." ― Tal Tovy, H-War"―

""Blueprints for Battle delves into the military planning used by each side and how it was shaped and reshaped as the world was transfored from the end of World War II to the late 1960s." ― Military History"―

""Jan Hoffenaar and Dieter Kruger's anthology Blueprints for Battle: Planning for War in Central Europe, 1948-1968 is essential reading for any serving officer and should be required reading for senior officials." ― Col. Gregory Fontenot, U.S. Army retired"―

Planning for World War III in Europe
By A. A. Nofi
A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com:

'This volume brings together fourteen papers from a 2007 conference sponsored jointly by the Netherlands Institute of Military History and the German Military History Research Institute, edited by a Dutch and a German scholar. The foreword, by David T. Zabecki, preface, by Prof. Krüger, and introduction by both editors help set the stage for the essays that follow, with an overview of the Cold War, trends in strategic thought, changes in military institutions, and political developments. Individual essays address various aspects of NATO and Soviet Bloc war plans, intelligence operations, logistics, several national contingents (British, Dutch, East German), and even wargaming. Although not a continuous narrative, rather a series of looks at the "what ifs" of an East-West war in Central Europe, "Blueprints for Battle" will prove valuable for students of the Cold War.'

Sheds some light on the Cold War
By William A. Thayer
Is this book everything you wanted to know about the Cold War in Europe? No. But it is the best book on the subject that I have found thus. Obviously classification is a problem. When you talk about using nuclear weapons, no one wants to get too specific. But this book is a start. It gives the basic conventional force line-up between the Warsaw Pact and NATO. Just based on the ground troops, NATO would have lost. But the book really didn't cover the Air Force element. Even if we consider just the conventional Air Force weapons, it would not have been a walk over for the Warsaw Pact. The bridges they needed and the supply lines they needed would have been shredded. The USAF, RAF and GAF were qualitatively far superior to what the Russians had (and the rest of the Warsaw Pact had next to nothing). If you don't have air superiority, you don't go too far. But this would be the subject of another book.

This book shed some light on the use of nuclear weapons. It is the first time that I have seen anything on nuclear mines written down. Thank God we never had the Cold War turn into a nuclear conflict.

Another aspect of the book that was good concerned logistics. This usually gets neglected, but at least this book discussed the issue from both NATO and Warsaw Pact vantage points. Again, the effect on Warsaw Pact logistics with most bridges and temporary bridges taken out by NATO Air Forces is not discussed.

Overall, a worthwhile book on a subject rarely written about.

Blueprints for Battle: Planning for War in Central Europe, 1948-1968...
By Bruce Galton
I have been fascinated by the history of the Cold War in Europe. This collection of essays is a wonderful introduction into the national and international dimensions of that time. This is not a book for casual readers. The detail and careful descriptions of plans and preparations are outstanding. As a young soldier, I had a worms-eye view of the Cold War in Europe. This book has helped me understand some of the "whys" US forces were arrayed and trained as we were.
