Jonathan Bean is professor of history at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He is the author of Beyond the Broker State: Federal Policies Toward Small Business, 1936-1961 and Big Government and Affirmative Action: The Scandalous History of the Small Business Administration.

A Wonderful Book and Essential Historical Reader

If you rely on the professors who dominate campuses today for your knowledge of history, Race and Liberty in America will be full of major revelations. The writings in this book provide an eye-opening introduction to a rich antiracist tradition which historians have shamelessly ignored. In this magisterial anthology, Jonathan Bean mines a rich vein of writings and other speeches by the great classical liberal and conservative pioneers against racism, many of whom helped to create the modern civil rights movement. Many of these works have never appeared before in book form. The selections cover such diverse topics as the fight for abolitionism and the allied struggles against Chinese exclusion, Jim Crow and Japanese internment.
Bean introduces modern readers to such critically important, but now forgotten, anti-racist crusaders as entrepreneur Lewis Tappan, who was the essential financial angel of abolitionism, NAACP superlawyer Moorfield Storey, frontier novelist Rose Wilder Lane, and black Republican congressman Oscar DePriest.
The selections also contain surprising new information about such better known individuals as Frederick Douglass, Warren G. Harding, Milton Friedman, and Zora Neale Hurston. Please buy this wonderful book!

The civil rights history not taught in schools

As Juan Williams said, this book is "full of revelations" Some of the figures (Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, Branch Rickey) are well known but others (Calvin Coolidge, Kelly Miller, the dean of Howard U) are not. Americans hunger for "getting beyond race" by tackling TRUE racial injustices while always recognizing that race is a dangerous fiction that no government ought to respect in the ways it treats citizens. That's what these writers did -- and still do.
I learned a lot and hope teachers assign this book so that students can get another point of view.

A Great Little Collection

Race and Liberty in America edited by Dr. Jonathan Bean is an excellent anthology of individuals whose writings dealt with the questions of race and liberty beginning in 1776 to the present. Note it's not an exhaustive list, but it contains some excellent essays by some notable names/writings such as; William Willberforce, Lysander Spooner, Frederick Douglas, Abraham Lincoln, BT Washington, MLK, etc. as well as lesser known figures like Beriah Green, Hamilton Fish, Zora Hurston, Louis Marshall...
The book is well organized and divided into seven sections/periods e.g. Antislavery (1776-1853), The Republican Era (1854-1876)...Classical Liberals in the Civil Rights Era (1946-1964), etc. Also at the end of each section the book contains a section on recommended readings which contains some good books for people who want to further explore the subject matter. Other topics included in this book deal with Chinese exclusion, Japanese internment, interracial marriage, and against segregated tennis on public courts (H.L. Mencken) among many others.
Beriah Green is an interesting figure in the abolition movement. He was a theologian and was head of the Oneida Institute and worked for a while (before they split) with William Lloyd Garrison's American Anti-Slavery Society. Anyways, Green has a short excerpt from The chattel principle the abhorrence of Jesus Christ and the apostles; or, No refuge for American slavery in the New Testament (a good read). Anyways, the essay is entitled, Is Jesus Christ In Favor of American Slavery? It goes on quoting from the Declaration of Independence and Jefferson, demonstrating certain principles against slavery and concludes that Jesus wasn't "in favor of what universal Christendom is impelled to abhor, denounce, and oppose."
Louis Marshall was an old civil rights lawyer by the 1920s and he expressed his concern over the policy of Harvard President A. Lawrence Lowell who imposed a quota against Jewish students in 1922, limiting the number of students "for their own good" so they would not "stir hatred and resentment among other students." The first letter excerpt was to A.C. Ratshesky and is very interesting because Marshall compared the policy of Lowell to the Czar treatment of Jews in the late 19th century. They also document his persistence throughout the 1920s prior to his death to end the practice of racial quotas at Harvard against the Jewish people. It's an interesting set of letters which contribute to the spirit of the book.
The above are just two examples which can be found in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone for its superb collection of sources as well as the list of books it contains for further investigation.
There is another good book I would like to recommend called Black Maverick: T. R. M. Howard's Fight for Civil Rights and Economic Power (New Black Studies Series) by David and Linda Beito.
