A Philosophical and Theological Discussion of the Theology of the Body

Gift & Communion philosophically exegetes John Paul II’s Theology of the Body by exploring the sources and thought behind it. The author elaborates the hermeneutical methods of the pope’s teaching of Scripture and Catholic doctrine. Kupczak writing is scholarly and critical throughout rather than practical and applicable for the average layperson. This book would be appropriately assigned and discussed in a seminary Ph.D. program rather than a parish study group.
Kupczak demonstrates the extraordinary breadth and depth of his familiarity with theological and philosophical writings relevant to the Theology of the Body. He spends much time discussing the prior writings of Karol Wojtyla to shine light on the actual implications of the Theology of the Body. The Theology of the Body teaching occurred on Wednesday evenings over five years from 1979 to 1984. Kupczak shows an appreciation for the teachings’ impact and its ongoing relevancy to the church.
Implicit in the devotion of Kupczak to his study of The Theology of the Body is his emphatic belief that this teaching should be the church’s authoritative statement on relationships between humans, especially sexual relations.
