Student organizers, volunteers, and community members canvassed black neighborhoods to organize the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP), a group that sought to give a voice to black Mississippians and demonstrate their will to vote in the face of terror and intimidation.

Lisa Anderson Todd served as a federal administrative judge for over twenty-two years on the Board of Contract Appeals at NASA and on the Armed Services Board of Contract Appeals at the Department of Defense.

Lisa was a young Mississipi Summer Volunteer and I was a field secretary for the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). The two of us were assigned to the voter registration campaign and advancing the work of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) in Greenville,Ms.
I had occasion to reunite with Lisa in the summer in June. The occasion was the Mississippi Freedom Summer 50th Anniversary Celebration. The conference was convened on the campus of Tougaloo College at Jackson,Ms. I heard Lisa's voice shouting down the corridor. "Is that Fred Anderson from the Geenville project?" We embraced and she informed me that I could read all about the summer and project in her upcoming book. Due out in December. "You are in there", she said. I pre-ordered the book and it was just recently delivered.
It is must reading. Lisa Todd Anderson has written a moving and elucidating account of Mississippi Freedom Summer and the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party challege to unseat the regular all white Mississippi State Democratic Party at the 1964 National Democratic Convention in Atlantic City. She brilliantly captures one of the most momentous and transformative junctures in the civil rights movement and American history.
The consensus and contradictions. The courage,commitment,treachery and betrayal. The continuing internal struggle to make sense of both the personal and political. The story of how Mississippi sharecroppers and poor disenfranchised blacks with the assistance of summer volunteers and veteran staff impacted the national politics and forever altered the discourse on the meaning of principled politics.
