Mind, Matter, and Nature: A Thomistic Proposal for the Philosophy of Mind, by James D. Madden

Introductory texts on the philosophy of mind tend to presume that we are forced into a dichotomy between some version of materialism and substance dualism. Hylomorphism―the idea that living material substances are not just matter, but compounds of matter and soul―is typically treated as a historical curiosity or as inherently obscure.

In Mind, Matter, and Nature, James D. Madden offers an alternative: an introduction to contemporary philosophy of mind on its own terms that concludes that the hylomorphic philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas offers the best approach. This book offers a fair-minded and detailed presentation of the most influential contemporary positions along with the arguments for and against them.

Written for students, Mind, Matter, and Nature presumes no prior philosophical training on the part of the reader. The book nevertheless holds the arguments discussed to rigorous standards and is conversant with recent literature, thus making it useful as well to more advanced students and professionals interested in a resource on Thomistic hylomorphism in the philosophy of mind.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

James D. Madden is associate professor of philosophy at Benedictine College.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"With great care and sophistication, Madden articulates an account of different iterations of theories of mind held and developed by the principal analytic philosophers in the twentieth century. His fair and learned work offers a broad sweep of issues from the general perspective of analytical Thomism."―Anthony J. Lisska, Maria Theresa Barney Professor of Philosophy, Denison University

"Using the best of the contemporary idiom, and dealing with the best of contemporary views, this book successfully presents aspects of the perennial philosophy. As a textbook or as a primer for a professional philosopher who wants to get a grip on why someone might be tempted towards hylomorphism, this is an outstanding work."―Patrick Toner, associate professor of philosophy, Wake Forest University

"Madden offers an introductory text in philosophy of mind that stands apart from most others on the market in its sustained attention to and defense of a Thomistic hylomorphism. . .Recommended." -Choice

Great introductory text to one of the most challenging topics
By A. Jaeger
James Madden's _Mind, Matter, and Nature: A Thomistic Proposal for the Philosophy of Mind_ proves to be an excellent undergraduate introductory text for the philosophy of mind as well as a substantial contribution that any professional contemporary philosopher of mind ought to engage with.

Madden clearly and concisely enters into the contemporary analytic philosophy of mind 'debate' by surveying what philosophers of mind presume to be the "live options" on the table. Throughout chapters two through six, Madden very thoroughly surveys the cases for and against: substance dualism, materialism (in its numerous forms), and emergentism. Madden finds all to fall short in various ways (although he does concede that some - viz. materialism - fall much harder than others). He then - quite convincingly - argues that these contemporary debates take as a starting point a certain supposition concerning the nature of material objects in general. Madden then proposes that this supposition (i.e., naturalism cum mechanism) about the material world need not be granted for general metaphysical reasons. If one denies this assumption (which he argues there are good independent reasons to do so), then one is able to provide an adequate alternative account of the philosophy of mind that is free from the errors discussed in chapters two through six. Madden's positive proposal is unabashedly Thomistic, and anyone interested in how the Thomistic account of human nature fits into the contemporary philosophy of mind debates will find Madden's book beyond helpful (not to mention just plain old fun to read). Those not bent towards the Thomistic tradition, nevertheless, will find this book helpful in explaining what the Thomistic tradition is (esp. the metaphysics of classical hylomorphism).

This book makes for a great general introductory text for undergraduates (whether of the Thomistic tradition or not). I have already used earlier drafts of this book in two of my general introduction to philosophy courses (with the permission of the author) at a large public school. The structure of the book makes teaching the material easy and straightforward (even if one is not a philosopher of mind by training). My students also found the book engaging and clearly written (despite the numerous complexities of the debates).
To my satisfaction, it also provoked a lot of discussion among students. Since Madden provides powerful arguments for and against the "mainstream views" of the mind (substance dualism and materialism) which most students hold in some form or another, each student will be challenged to thoroughly think through and grapple with his/her beliefs concerning the nature and relation between the mind and body.

Every college student should read this...
By M. Kilcawley
A great introduction to the Philosophy of Mind, even for the non-philosopher. This should be a must-read for any college student as it deals principally with the question, "What am I?"

Whether or not you agree with Madden's conclusions, you will find in this book an understandable yet thorough account of the best arguments for the leading contemporary positions, as well as the commitments they entail. A fair treatment of all positions including his own (Madden doesn't claim to have the last word on the matter by any means), this book could open the door to new considerations for the reader and make her challenge assumptions she may not even realize she holds.

Excellent Introduction to Various Philosophies
By Beth A Parks
An excellent introduction to various philosophies at the point where the rubber hits the road -- the human mind. This book is understandable. It assumes no familiarity with philosophical jargon. It avoids being pompous with bits of humor and appropriate humility about what is actually proven and, more often, not proven. It provides a balanced mixture of rigorous logic and appeals to common sense.

My son loaned us a copy and I read it to my wife while she did evening chores. It was very helpful towards our understanding of where we stand in the world. We had earlier read (and re-read) From Big Bang to Big Mystery. This book provided both reinforcement and foundation for Purcell’s book. I will certainly give Aristotle and Aquinas their due. But whenever I see nature in the light of hylomorphism, I will be thinking that it is a Madden, Madden, Madden, Madden world!
