The always rewarding Lucas Morel has compiled penetrating essays from leading scholars of Abraham Lincoln. Of the many collections of scholarly work on Lincoln this one ranks as indispensable. Contributors include Diana Schaub, Michael Burlingame, Allen C. Guelzo, Fred Kaplan, Steve Kautz, Ben Kleinerman, and Mac Owens. Thus they combine the virtues of historians and political theorists to produce a sharper and more penetrating portrayal of Lincoln than conventional approaches allow. This is a great event for scholarship and for civic education. Justice Clarence Thomas has graced the volume with an introductory essay on Lincoln and Dred Scott.
