Review
"Paul Thompson has truly been an inspiration and mentor to all of us interested in ethics and agriculture. His many publications have provided a unique contribution to the history of American thought. This work on agrarianism provides us with yet another stellar analysis of an important ethical issue. The agrarian philosophy which Thompson articulates in this new analysis, probably his best book yet, provides us with a fresh, pragmatic approach to fulfilling our ecological responsibility whether we are farmers, policy makers, or eaters."―Frederick L. Kirschenmann, Distinguished Fellow, Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, Iowa State University, and president of the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture"
"Thompson shows the centrality of agriculture and its communities not just to our livelihood, health, and security, but to the beauty and sense of place that unites us historically and politically. With this book he brings all the power of analytic philosophy to environmental ethics."―Mark Sagoff, director of the Institute for Philosophy and Public Policy at the University of Maryland and author of The Economy of the Earth: Philosophy, Law, and the Environment"
"A valuable and important synthesis of Thompson's pioneering work in the philosophy of agriculture and the environment. This book makes a compelling case for the vitality of the agrarian tradition and its role in the search for sustainability in the twenty-first century."―Ben A. Minteer, author of The Landscape of Reform: Civic Pragmatism and Environmental Thought in America"
"The Agrarian Vision takes us beyond the virtues of human-scale agriculture to examine the ethics of food linked to agricultural production. By enlarging his focus to food, Thompson illuminates the linkages between food and agriculture, rather than agriculture as a source of industrial inputs. By doing this, he deepens the discussion on sustainability to include the normative frame of agrarianism. Brilliantly written, The Agrarian Vision is a must read for those involved in the many strains of the sustainable movement."―Cornelia Butler Flora, coauthor of Rural Communities: Legacy and Change"
"Thompson's book shows just how much heavy spadework remains to be done for a full recupation of the agrarian ideal... [and] will be of use to anyone seeking to articulate a twenty-first century agrarian vision."―Agricultural History"
"Thompson's The Agrarian Vision is a timely and major contribution to bridging the rapidly growing movements of sustainable agriculture and localization with the fields of environmental etheics and sustainanbility. Perhaps most compelling is its vision of how we can re-embed ourselves and out communites into patterns with a compelling moral vision that contributes constriuctively to sustainability." ― Daniel T. Spencer"
"A timely and major contribution to bridging the rapidly growing movements of sustainable agriculture and localization with fields of environmental ethics and sustainability."―Journal of Environmental Studies and Sciences"
"Paul Thompson has written a wise, important book for...a post-agrarian culture...The essays recollected and revised for The Agrarian Vision span Thompson's career. They bear the mark of a teacher, scholar, and public intellectual, not an ideologue. Thompson presents ideas clearly and generously."―Roger Epp, Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics
"While scholarly and rich, Thompson's book is also accessible and lively, illustrated more often than not by engaging stories and vivid examples. The more people who read―and enjoy―this book, the better our public dialogue about sustainability will be."―Kristen Hessler, Great Plains Research
From the Inside Flap
With skyrocketing gas prices, an economic recession, and the developing presence of chemically altered food, the state of our planet is a growing concern. Going "green" and organic are two of the newest trends intended to decrease our negative impact on the environment and reverse existing damage. The Agrarian Vision: Sustainability and Environmental Ethics explores the significance of agrarian philosophy for modern agriculture and our transition to a sustainable society.
While sustainability remains a national and global concern, many "environmentally committed" individuals do not identify any connection with agrarian ideals. The Agrarian Vision strives to change that perception, particularly in the United States. Paul B. Thompson argues that a philosophy of sustainability requires superior logic, informed by moral and political philosophies, as well as by the environmental philosophy that was once expressed in connection with farming. Internationally regarded as a leading expert in the fields of environmental science and agrarian philosophy, Thompson covers a variety of issues, including ethics, environmental philosophy, food and community, public policy, and agrarian life. His work draws on contemporary and historical scholarship, outlining the best path for sustainability in the modern world.
The Agrarian Vision first offers a historical perspective on sustainability and the debates that have formed over the last 100 years and concludes with modern theories of sustainability and agrarian thought. Challenging us to change how we live to create a sustainable environment way of life, The Agrarian Vision demonstrates that in order to change the world, we must first change ourselves.

Excellent Philosophy Book!
By Kristine Durant
I purchased this book because of a philosophy class I am taking this semester, but I am so glad I did! This is one of the best philosophy book I had read so far. Thompson is a great writer. He is easy to read (unlike most philosophers), and his idea for America's agricultural future is worth reading. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to live in a better world.

Pragmatically recovering an agrarian vision
By Steven Fesmire
In addition to his work uncovering American pragmatism's agrarian roots, Thompson is a leading voice in environmental ethics, agricultural philosophy, and the ethics of biotechnology. As an instructor I've used The Agrarian Vision in a range of undergraduate and graduate courses as an essential and accessible historical introduction to agricultural ethics. Thompson explains at the outset of the book that his focus is on "how a nearly forgotten way of understanding agriculture's broad and deep cultural significance can be a keystone for thinking about sustainability" (p. 8). Chapter Five on focal practices and devices is the heart of Thompson's presentation of the agrarian vision, as it's here that he directly engages fundamental questions about what makes our lives significant. He draws in that chapter from philosopher of technology Albert Borgmann's critique of our device-driven culture. For example, most of us pay bills to run a furnace, replacing the seasonal rhythms that centered on the hearth. Some devices have improved our quality of life, Borgmann observes, but we have also lost meaning-making "focal practices" that brought coherence, significance, and a sense of place.

I really enjoyed reading this book
By K. Marie Frances
I really enjoyed reading this book. I bought it to write a paper for my environmental ethics class (I'm getting my PhD in Environmental Literature) and I used it as one of my main sources. I think that Thompson's insight on the importance of an agrarian mindset in tackling the problem of sustainability is unique and really informational. I definitely recommend this book!
