Alvin York: A New Biography of the Hero of the Argonne (American Warrior Series), by Douglas V. Mastriano

Alvin C. York (1887–1964)―devout Christian, conscientious objector, and reluctant hero of World War I―is one of America's most famous and celebrated soldiers. Known to generations through Gary Cooper's Academy Award-winning portrayal in the 1941 film Sergeant York, York is credited with the capture of 132 German soldiers on October 8, 1918, in the Meuse-Argonne region of France―a deed for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

At war's end, the media glorified York's bravery but some members of the German military and a soldier from his own unit cast aspersions on his wartime heroics. Historians continue to debate whether York has received more recognition than he deserves. A fierce disagreement about the location of the battle in the Argonne forest has further complicated the soldier's legacy.

In Alvin York, Douglas V. Mastriano sorts fact from myth in the first full-length biography of York in decades. He meticulously examines York's youth in the hills of east Tennessee, his service in the Great War, and his return to a quiet civilian life dedicated to charity. By reviewing artifacts recovered from the battlefield using military terrain analysis, forensic study, and research in both German and American archives, Mastriano reconstructs the events of October 8 and corroborates the recorded accounts. On the eve of the WWI centennial, Alvin York promises to be a major contribution to twentieth-century military history.

McMaster, author of Dereliction of Duty: Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Lies that Led to Vietnam

"Mastriano applies the tools of the professional military intelligence officer to the information from his exhaustive research in both American and German archives and his on-site battlefield analysis to confirm the historical veracity of the major elements of the Sergeant York legend as they have come down to us today. Just as importantly, he also brings to light new facts about that battle fought almost 100 years ago. The result is a tour de force of historical detective work."―Major General David T. Zabecki, AUS (Ret.)

Finally, a true and readable account of SGT York's historic actions - educational and inspiring!
By MICHAEL A. MARRA
This book is a completely new and much more readable and accurate account of the old but true heroic story of SGT Alvin C. York, US Army, circa World War I. The timing of this book is impeccable now that we are approaching the Centennial of the Great War in 2014, and we will quickly reach the 100th Anniversary of America’s involvement in that conflict in 2017. Colonel Doug Mastriano, PhD, a Soldier-Scholar, has crafted a masterful narrative with this revealing and exciting book detailing the events leading up to and including the famous 8 October, 1918 engagement. Here, SGT York, facing overwhelming odds, saw fit to counterattack a strongly held enemy position near Châtel Chéhéry, France. As we now know, York led a charge on the position and in doing so, captured 132 Germans officers, enlisted men, and all their equipment – a seemingly incredible feat which has been scrutinized and challenged many times over the decades. Mastriano has painstakingly exhumed forensic evidence from that battlefield to once-and-for-all provide irrefutable evidence to establish a factual account of the day, which removes the mythology and rumors surrounding York, who earned the Medal of Honor for his conduct that fateful day. Mastriano respectfully but conclusively deconstructs alternate accounts of the battle to permanently stipulate events as they occurred by employing an exhaustive examination of all first-person reports, maps, diagrams, previous studies, and finally, his own investigation of the battlefield to bring us this book. Beyond the clinical and technical aspects of the book to set the context, the part of this book you will enjoy the most is about the man, Alvin York. The narrative of his life is a true American story of rebellion, redemption, responsibility and finally recognition for his actions. This is a great read, and would make a perfect gift for a person who enjoys biographies, history, military events, or simply a wonderful human interest story about a man who lived up to and beyond his humble origins. I highly recommend this book for yourself or anyone you would like to gift.

The Reader Learns
By Clif Berry
Every reader is rewarded at every page in this biography of Alvin York. Colonel Douglas V. Mastriano has conducted unprecedented research and then assembled a near-infinite collection of item from his research into a clear and absorbing--and accurate--story of the life of a very special person in American history.
The story is enriched by inclusion of Alvin York's own words at appropriate places. His faith is clear, and so is his determination to serve his country. As one reads the biography, those two aspects of York's life are depicted with precision and within context. Alvin York's extraordinary actions on October 8, 1918 in the Argonne Forest while serving in the 328th Infantry Regiment of the 82d Division resulted in his receiving the Medal of Honor. Those of us who served in the 82d Airborne Division in later decades learned of his actions, and always considered Sergeant York an example to follow.
Colonel Mastriano has succeeded in reconstructing the events of October 8 with extraordinary accuracy and placing them in the larger context of Alvin C. York's entire life. He also succeeds in establishing much higher standards for military histories and biographies.
Get this book right away, and enjoy learning from it to the utmost. Then look forward to more books in this "American Warrior" series presented by the Association of the United States Army and the University Press of Kentucky.

The TRUE STORY of Sgt. Alvin York, from Consicentious Objector (CO), to serving God in WW I and be Awarded the Medal of Honor
By Richard Yesensky
Col. Mastriano has written a phenomenal, five-star book that is absolutely a non-stop page turner. His skill at writing left me feeling as though I was literally one of those dough boys standing in the muddy, wet, stinking, and death-filled trenches. His technique of using the soldiers themselves to describe the anguish, fear, and horrid living conditions brought me into the heart of that war, as though I were seeing it through the eyes of the men who were there; all of them waiting for the signal for another bayonet charge into the German lines. Col. Mastriano places his reader into the middle of that war. He left me with an understanding of Sgt. York's deeply held Christian beliefs, and the struggle he faced between that faith and his duty while serving in the army during WW I. His book provided in depth discussions that Sgt. York had with his commanding officers on why a Christian should serve God in war, just as in peace. I was extremely impressed with his extensive research, which included using military terrain analysis, archeological digs and forensic studies. Additionally, he used diaries, documents, other books, and recorded interviews as he dug into York's personal, deeply held beliefs; those beliefs which remained intact throughout his war experience. While serving with the army in Germany Col. Mastriano made multiple visits to the Meuse-Argonne region in France. He investigated the actual battle ground where York fought the Germans and was awarded the MEDAL OF HONOR. Col. Mastriano literally took the initiative to walk the actual battle fields and dig up the areas where the battle was fought. He took with him French and German historians and others seeking to assist him in establishing the actual sight of the battle. Finally, after years of research, he was able to literally correct history. He discovered that the original battle sight and memorial were placed at the wrong location. His tireless and determined group finally found the real battle sight and were able, in conjunction with the French and German governments, to officially place a Memorial at the correct location. Colonel Mastriano has written a book that would glue anyone to its pages, whether a stay at home mother, a student in school, or a former or current military member of the Armed Forces. This book was written to be enjoyed by all people, in all walks of life. I found it to be technically impeccable. The research and explanation of how the soldiers suffered during that war I found most compelling. Most importantly, his book did an incredible job of allowing us to see into the heart and soul of a man named Sgt. Alvin York and how God saved his life and changed it forever. It may be the finest biography I have ever read.
