wyler, huac and the hollywood ten

As a big fan of william wyler films, i was very pleased to also learn from gabrel miller's fascinating biography that wyler was also a strong advocate for artistic freedom and an early supporter of the hollywood 10. This was at a time many in the film industry knuckled under to pressure from huac. I also loved reading Miller's detailed account of the making of "the best years of our lives" . No film today could do justice to our the struggles of our returning soldiers as wyler did for ww11 vets. if you love the greatest films of hollywood's golden age as much as i do, by all means go out and get this important biography of william wyler.

A Major Disappointment

A major disappointment. The book is subtitled The Life and Films of Hollywood's Celebrated Director - however, very little time is spent on Wyler's life. The book is essentially interminable summary after summary of each of Wyler's films with varying amounts spent on different films. Jezebel has an entire chapter while Roman Holiday, Ben Hur, and Friendly Persuasion are combined into one chapter. The author thinks Jezebel is a much better film than Gone With the Wind (not my opinion - I could never get past Bette Davis' fake Southern accent) and spends a lot of time telling us about Wyler's use of staircases and frames within frames throughout his films. I purchased the book thinking I would get a biography of Wyler. This is not a biography and really does not even do a good job of going over the films because there is very little of the backstory or issues encountered while making the film. Wyler is an acclaimed director - this book does not do him justice.

Life of a famous film director

A disappointing book as far too much space is wasted simply recounting the plots of various Wyler films. There is little insight into his character and little assessment of his achievements.
