Dangerous ethics

Christian Ethics is rooted in the fact of the Resurrection, and the scandalous nature of Patristic texts on social ethics makes clear how radical Christian Ethics must be.
I applaud this series of scholarly essays for not stepping back, cravenly, from frightening topics like "usury" and "social justice." In a time when the current political discourse cannot even bear to say the word "poverty" out loud, the early Orthodox Fathers' voice is particularly hard and poignant.
In Orthodox culture, there is a troubling and simplistic notion that our mysticism permits us to dis-engage from the concerns of social justice. A reading of more than two paragraphs in the Cappadocian Fathers and others (like Chrysostom) defeats this notion in a hamfisted manner. And this volume shows it.
A very helpful corrective to some of the "libertarian" discourse going on in conservative religious circles.
